Drawing a Line: A Look at the Injustice Comic

Fans who have been following the Injustice: Gods Among Us comic book digitally or in print discovered something on Tuesday when they began playing the video game—the story mode ties immediately and directly in with the comic. The first time you see Superman, he’s confronting the Joker about being drugged and lured into destroying everything he’s ever cared about, before he angrily pulls his arm back and…

Well, if you’ve played the game or read the comic, you know. If you haven’t, we’re not about to ruin it for you. However, the point is that if you only play the game, you’re only getting part of the story of Injustice. The game takes place on a global scale, involving not only dozens of iconic DC Comics characters, but much of the human race. That said, it is a fighting game, so ultimately the story exists to give you plenty of opportunities to knuckle-dust some DC heroes and villains. It’s in making the transition from the story moments to the playable ones so seamless that the game excels. And likewise, so does the comic.

“I knew Tom Taylor was a guy who could handle a large, divergent cast, make each of the characters unique and set up some unexpected interactions between characters you wouldn’t expect,” says series editor Jim Chadwick. “Tom writes the big, epic, cast-of-dozens material well. But I also love his short, standalone chapters that focus on one or two characters. It’s big stuff on a human scale and makes you feel for some of these otherwise invulnerable characters. And Tom does an excellent job of dancing between heavy, dark drama and lighter, more playful moments in ways that make it all seem more real.”

This isn’t always easy on a comic that ties in so heavily with another project, but according to series writer Tom Taylor, the experience of working on the Injustice comic has been a very welcome exception to the rule.

“To tell you the truth, aside from having to include a few key events, I’ve never had this much freedom on a licensed book, and I can’t tell you how amazing this has been. This is down to the fantastic story that John Vogel and the guys at NetherRealm created for the game. At every step of the way, we’ve known the world we’re working towards.”

Of course, now that people can buy and experience the game themselves, everyone can know the world their working towards. So are there still reasons to continue reading the comic? It turns out that there are even more reasons to read now than there was before, especially if you’re a fan of that world.

“I’ve always known what our final point is, but we’re now expanding our prequel story,” Taylor explains, “which means we’re getting to bring in a lot more elements and people. I really wasn’t expecting to get to play with some of the characters I’m writing now. The prequel takes place five years before the game, so we have a lot of time to play with. The game leaves a lot of questions unanswered and a lot of character’s fates unknown.”

It also means we can expect the series to delve still deeper into the world of the game. As Chadwick reminds us, “We haven’t even touched on some of the key events that will explain certain things about what players see in the game, particularly the development of Batman’s resistance movement and how it is that some of these characters seem to have powers in the game that go far beyond those they normally possess in the DCU.” (If you’ve been wondering how the Joker can punch Doomsday through buildings, you know what Jim’s referring to.)

But how long can we expect the series to continue focusing on the events leading up to the game? Can we expect to eventually see the series jump forward in time so that it’s set during the game, or maybe afterwards? Probably not any time soon, according to the team involved.

“This is a game with a rich backstory,” Chadwick explains. “So there is much for us to explore in the years that predate the start of the game, and I think we’ll continue to mine that territory for a while. Having worked on a number of comics based on games, it’s very tricky trying to do a story set within the timeline of the game itself. Certainly within the prequel timeline we also have to be careful not to digress from something established within the game either. But the prequel timeline does allow us to do longer, more expansive stories. Maybe if we're inspired to tell an interesting short story within the game timeline, we’ll consider it. For now, though, I think we’ll stay in the past.”

If you’re new to the Injustice comic book, you should know that it’s one of DC Comics’ digital first titles. New chapters of the comic are released every Tuesday, with a print edition following each month. Last Tuesday saw the release of Chapter 14, which centered around a dramatic confrontation between Batman and Superman. However, the plan with the comic is to give all characters their moment to shine—just like in the game.

“The most fun has probably been that Harley Quinn / Green Arrow story in Chapter #4 which I know a lot of people really dug,” teases Taylor. “Don’t worry, they get another moment soon."

“Also, Batman will lose one of those closest to him," Taylor continues. "Wars will stop. Harley Quinn will once again don a fake moustache. Peace will be enforced. Catwoman will hold things together. Heads will explode. More heroes will appear. Villains will disappear. SHAZAM! will question. Traps will be laid. Green Arrow will be mocked. And something impossible will come out of Metropolis.”

But what if you haven’t started reading the comic yet? You may be wondering if it’s too far along for you to start. Or what if you have no intention on ever playing the Injustice video game? Would you still enjoy reading the comic?

Injustice is doing something that I feel is kind of unique for a comic series based on a video game,” says Chadwick. “Taken on its own, with no knowledge of the game, it just reads like a really cool, out-of-continuity ‘Elseworlds’ type of story that long time fans of these characters can appreciate. But gamers can also explore the rich backstory that they’ll touch upon and be curious about from playing the game. To make a long answer short, it’s a well-done story that anyone can jump into and enjoy.

“And we’ve got a team of artists, each working at the top of their game. I swear everyone who has touched this has been inspired to do their best, and hats off particularly to Mike S. Miller, Jheremy Raapack and Tom Derenick. Weekly comics make it necessary to work with a wider than usual pool of artists, and I think we’re getting some great results.”

Above all, if you’ve been playing the game and loving it, the comic can both feed your craving for more Injustice and enrich your experience playing the game.

“If you’re playing the game and—according to my twitter feed—every single person on the planet seems to be playing the game, then our comic is pretty integral reading,” Taylor explains. “It’s sometimes horrible, sometimes sad, sometimes funny, sometimes nasty, sometimes disappointing and sometimes unexpected and rage-inducing. But stories aren’t supposed to always give you everything you want. Stories are supposed to surprise you, and this one is full of surprises even though we know that this is essentially a story of the World’s Finest break-up.

“Also, pick it up because then all the days and nights I spend writing this instead of seeing the outside world and sleeping will be worth it. To streamline things, I’m thinking about teaching my two-year-old son how to make coffee for daddy.”

So have you been reading the Injustice comic? Well, if you haven’t, you can now get the first digital chapter for free as a part of our Injustice Justice League Digital Comic Sale. 5.2 Reasons We're Excited for Injustice

We’ve all be there. Discussing our favorite super heroes with our friend (let’s randomly say, oh, Jimmy) and suddenly the conversation turns to who would win a fight. Not between us and Jimmy (obviously, that’d be us—what now, Jimmy?!) but in match-ups between Superman and Batman, Wonder Woman and SHAZAM!, the Flash and Green Lantern. The debate rages, and even though Jimmy is clearly wrong because he’s a big, stupid, jerkface, you never come to an agreement.

Well, things are about to change because with the release of the Injustice: Gods Among Us video game on April 16, you can finally take the debate to the ring by pitting your favorite super heroes and super villains against one another in a scenery-smashing, face-punching, level-exploding brawl across the DC Universe.

The early videos got us buzzing and the more we’ve seen—between online reveals and convention demos—the more that buzzing became an all-out electrocution of anticipation. With the game’s release less than a week away, we’re breaking down the 5.2 Reasons We’re Excited for Injustice!

1. The Story

Yes, we realize Injustice is a fighting game and generally speaking, who needs a story when Catwoman is dropkicking Solomon Grundy in the face—but we’re actually really interested to play through the story mode and explore a world where Superman and other members of the World’s Greatest have taken over, turning the Earth into a totalitarian regime. And have Catwoman dropkick Solomon Grundy in the face while doing so.

2. The Battles

There’s just no getting around it. We’re really excited to pit these characters against one another, to finally settle these debates once and for all... at least until the next round. And for those who have been joining us each week for Injustice Battle Arena—which culminates on Monday night in a final fight between Batman and Superman—and demanding rematches, well, now you can have it! There’s definitely going to be a lot of “best two out of three,” “best six out of ten,” “okay, okay, best eleven out of twenty.”

3. The Cast

Sure we’ve got the basics we all wanted—Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, Cyborg—but some revelations about the extended cast got us incredibly excited: Nightwing, Raven, Ares, SHAZAM! AND Black Adam, Hawkgirl, Sinestro and more. Not to mention who knows who else they’ll bring out for DLC.

4. Interactive Environment

Each level comes equipped with a multitude of environmental weapons at your disposal with unique usages depending on your particular character build. Powerhouses like Doomsday and Bane can pick up cars and bash them into their opponent’s heads while acrobats like Nightwing and Deathstroke can utilize overhead items to escape from a tricky situation. Not to mention being able to knock your opponents through buildings or floors of the Batcave into a whole new section of the level.

5. Multiple Game Modes

We’ve mentioned the Story Mode and of course there’s your standard versus mode, but Injustice also includes Battle Mode, an online “King of the Hill” mode, and S.T.A.R. Labs, which include 240 character-specific challenges.

5.1 Super Moves

In Superman’s Ultimate Attack, he punches you into freaking space!

5.2 Alternate Costumes

Nothing quite beats Red Son Wonder Woman uppercutting the hell out of Blackest Night Batman.

What are you most excited for and what characters would you love to see as DLC? Let us know in the comments! In the meantime, we’re going to prepare to prove to Jimmy once and for all that Harley Quinn could totally beat Doomsday in a fight!

Ask DC Collectibles: March 20th

This week in the Injustice Battle Arena, Jim Fletcher, the lean mean sculpting machine that is DC Entertainment’s Director of Creative Services and Kevin Kiniry, DC Entertainment’s suave, yet savage Vice President of Creative Services face an unrelenting assault of hard-hitting questions!

Or, to put it another way, Welcome to our latest edition of Ask DC Collectibles! This month’s topic was Injustice: Gods Among Us, the new line of 3 3/4” action figures inspired by the upcoming video game. Who will live and who will die? What will you ask? What will we answer? As the battle fury rises towards the April release of Injustice: Gods Among Us, Ask DC Collectibles takes a look at what is on your mind!

Jim Fletcher and Kevin Kiniry are angry...and highly articulated!

Injustice: Where are Doomsday, Batman, Joker, SHAZAM!, Catwoman and Bane?

Well, they are definitely kicking butt over in the game from NetherRealm Studios. As for the 3 3/4” line from DC Collectibles, if sales prove to be a knockout on our first waves of figures, you can expect us to explore the entire roster of characters. But we can tell you that some of the names you mentioned may already be sculpted and waiting for their chance to join the fight.

What accessories do the Injustice figures come with?

Sometimes even the greatest of heroes and evilest of villains need a helping hand. Some of the accessories you can expect to see will be knives for Solomon Grundy, a trident for Aquaman, Deathstroke will have a sniper rifle and Green Arrow will have his trusty bow.

In the right hands, these weapons are deadly. In ours, they're actually a little cute.

Will the Injustice Nightwing figure come with escrima sticks?

We have accessories for some figures, and Nightwing is one as he comes equipped to kick some butt with his escrima sticks. Or if you want to get technical, hit some butt? Or maybe throw them at some butt? Uh…yeah, let’s move on.

Will there be any Injustice figures in the 6” style like the Arkham figures?

Check out the 6” Injustice action figures from Mattel! They are offering a few of the key characters in 6” and would love to see the interest from fans for more. As for DC Collectibles, we are living in the 3 3/4” world right now and are focused on getting you the character selection and articulation to reenact your favorite battles at that scale.

And finally, the secret character in The Flash two-pack can finally be revealed! Raven joins The Flash is a battle to the finish. Check the DC Collectibles Facebook page for a picture of the two figures in action figure awesomeness.

Or...you can just look here. But you should still like our Facebook page!

We had asked for questions about Injustice this time around, but we really appreciate all of your other questions and comments! We read them and are keeping them in mind for future Ask DC Collectibles sessions. Thanks for reading…and collecting!

5.2 Reasons it's a Great Time to be a Green Arrow Fan

If you love the color green and you love people that shoot other people with arrows—and the idea of those two things together gets you more excited than Wonder Woman at a sword sale—then slip on an extra pair of your excitement pants because right now, it’s all about Oliver Queen, the Green Arrow.

From his own television series to showing up as a playable character in the upcoming Injustice: Gods Among Us to multiple appearances in multiple comic book titles, Green Arrow seems to be hitting the mark all across the pop culture board. And as fellow fans of the Emerald Archer, we’re so ecstatic that we’re ready to slip on a green hoodie and run down the street firing sticky arrows onto the sides of buildings proclaiming our love of the character.

However, since the police department and general public frowns on that sort of behavior (a lesson we learned the hard way after repeated viewings of Lord of the Rings), we instead decided to present you with the 5.2 Reasons it’s a Great Time to be a Green Arrow Fan! Sadly, the existence of this column isn’t included as one of those reasons, even though we totally know you all love it so much.

1. Arrow Stikes Again

Yesterday marked the return of the popular CW television series Arrow. Besides the obvious thrill that comes with being able to see Willa Holland, Katie Cassidy and shirtless Stephen Amell again, the simple fact of the matter is that Arrow is an insanely awesome action series that has only gotten better and better with each passing episode and each introduction of a new DCU character. Firefly served as the antagonist in last night’s episode, and upcoming eps are set to include Count Vertigo, Roy Harper and more Deathstroke!

2. Jeff Lemire’s Green Arrow

We’re interested in just about everything that Lemire chooses to take on, but for Green Arrow fans, his taking the reins of the hero’s self-titled series beginning with February’s issue #17 is particularly exciting. Lemire has a knack for humanizing characters and injecting a great bit of humor into his stories, and after hearing him talk about the character in interviews, we trust him enough to put an apple on our head and let him fire away—blindfolded!

3. Bringing Arrow-y Justice to Injustice

The upcoming fighting game Injustice: Gods Among Us by NetherRealm Studios looks to utilize the DC Comics stable of characters in face-punching, wall-smashing and other sure-to-leave-a-bruise ways of beating the ever-living crap out of each other. Green Arrow joins the likes of Superman, Batman, Harley Quinn, Wonder Woman, Nightwing and many yet to be revealed characters for the game, which arrives in stores this April.

4. Statues, Figures, and Toys, Oh My

Green Arrow is also taking stage in the collector’s realm with a number of statues and figures from DC Collectibles—including a beautiful Arrow statue, a 3.75-inch figure based on his appearance in Injustice, and a DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 action figure! Put them all together with others heroes from across DC Collectibles and you can reenact your very own Crisis on Multiple Earths crossover! Cause, you know, what else do we do in our spare time?

5. Arrow Goes Online

Things usually come in threes—strikes, great film franchises, celebrity deaths—and Green Arrow gets his own triple treat by not only starring in the monthly Green Arrow and the upcoming Justice League of American, but also the weekly digital first series Arrow, which ties into the television series and explores the background of various characters such as Huntress, Firefly, Diggle and more.

5.1 Green Arrow Joins the Justice League of America

5.2 Oliver Queen Joins Facebook!

Be certain to like Green Arrow’s brand spanking new page on Facebook so you can stay in the know about the latest vigilante sightings (otherwise known as Green Arrow news). And don't forget to tune in Arrow on The CW, Wednesdays at 8/7c! Be sure to tell us why you love Green Arrow in the comments below! What current or upcoming Green Arrow project do you feel hits the bulls-eye?
