A First Look at Acclaimed Artist Jill Thompson’s take on THE SHADE

Acclaimed artist Jill Thompson is joining writer James Robinson for issue #8 of his upcoming 12-part THE SHADE miniseries, starring the former-villain-turned-reluctant-hero from Robinson’s STARMAN series. The special standalone issue — set in Paris in the early 1900s — is something Robinson wrote specifically for Thompson. And even though the issue’s still months away, we’ve got a first look at her work.

“James wanted to work with me, and I wanted to work with him. We ran into each other and he said that he had a specific project with me in mind – which is ultimately how this issue came about,” said Thompson.

“I'm thrilled to be working with Jill, after loving her work for so many years in Sandman and Invisibles, as well as her own creations such as Scary Godmother and Beasts of Burden,” said Robinson. “I feel fortunate to have her among the talented artists on this book and I love her wonderful interpretation of the Shade.”

THE SHADE miniseries starts in October, with #8 on sale next May. To tide you over until then, check out our first look at Thompson’s art from #8.

From The Editor’s Desk: Eddie Berganza on FLASHPOINT

This Wednesday marks the release of the final issue of the bestselling FLASHPOINT mini-series. FLASHPOINT #5 brings an action-packed, jaw dropping and emotionally charged conclusion to this summer’s game-changing series. Take my word for it: you won’t be disappointed.

If you happen to be at Fan Expo Canada, stop by the Final Flashpoint Friday panel. I’ll be there with Brian Azzarello, Andy Kubert, Francis Manapul and James Robinson to talk about all things FLASHPOINT. See you in Toronto!

And I’d also like to express my sincerest gratitude to all of who have provided the series and all of its’ tie-ins with such overwhelming support. Everything you knew changed in a FLASH.

FLASHPOINT FRIDAY: “I want you to suffer as I did.”

Michael Desai comes face to face with the nemesis he once captured and sold: Martian Manhunter. The final issue of this miniseries culminates with the man of stone fighting the Martian as he shape shifts into gigantic killer beasts. Will his ingenuity finally be bested by the Martian Manhunter’s sheer strength? Or is The Outsider powerful enough to destroy even the most dangerous of his enemies?

Written by James Robinson with art by Javi Fernandez, FLASHPOINT: THE OUTSIDER #3 delivers an action-packed conclusion and includes a major tease of the upcoming events in FLASHPOINT #5.

FLASHPOINT FRIDAY: “Unite and follow me as one great force and the whole of Calcutta can be ours.”

Michael Desai is as ruthless in his personal life as he is in the business world. A look back into his origins shows how he took over the crime scene in India and set up the power base he has today. But when Teth-Adam launches an attack to get rid of him, Michael will have to eliminate his nemesis. Can The Outsider’s powers overrule Shazam’s? And even if he does win his battle, will it truly be over?

FLASHPOINT: THE OUTSIDER #2 comes from the creative team of James Robinson, Javi Fernandez and The Hories, and arrives in stores next week.

FLASHPOINT FRIDAY: Introducing Michael Desai

flashpoint-logo_whiteMichael Desai is a little bit of everything. He’s corporate. He’s elegant. He’s ruthless. He’s a survivor. He’s more dangerous than anyone knows. He is The Outsider.

We caught up with the miniseries’ writer, James Robinson about what it was like to create this new and multi-layered character:

“It's exciting to be working on one of the Flashpoint books, especially one featuring Michael Desai, the Outsider -- businessman, meta-human and villain combined -- who's a never-before-seen character that I hope readers enjoy meeting for the first time. It's definitely fun to write a character with no morals and a love of tea and tailored suits. In all those regards he reminds me of myself.”

Head over to COMIC BOOK RESOURCES to view exclusive preview pages. THE OUTSIDER #1, written by James Robinson and with art by Javi Fernandez, hits stores next week.
