Jeff Lemire Talks New ANIMAL MAN Story Arc

Next month, ANIMAL MAN’s new story arc, “Splinter Species,” will find Buddy Baker dealing not only with immense personal tragedy, but also with his increasing fame as he finds himself nominated for a Best Actor Academy Award.

“I felt that Buddy's celebrity is an aspect of his character that makes him unique from other super heroes. He's one of the few DC characters whose identity is known to the public, but also who has this bizarre cult following as a minor celebrity. To me, that seemed like a perfect opportunity to explore, what I see as a real sickness in our culture, that being our obsession with fame and celebrity,” series writer Jeff Lemire recently explained to MTV GEEK. “This is the Baker family's darkest hour. They will either be destroyed completely or evolve into something new. And, just as Buddy hits rock bottom emotionally and personally his celebrity explodes, making everything even more complicated and difficult.”

And what about the Splinterfolk, the new villains that we got a sneak peek at last week?

“They're a group of... I guess you would call them, at one time they were animal rights activists. But they've pushed it so far and gone so far in the extreme with it that they've actually started surgically grafting animal parts on their own bodies, to be closer to the Red. So they've become these horrible mockeries of animal rights activists, these Frankenstein kind of half-human, half-animal creatures that Buddy tangles with,” Lemire said to NEWSARAMA. “After The Rot, I really wanted to expand Animal Man's rogues’ gallery. I wanted to add a number of new villains both old and new as a way to help keep the book fresh. So in addition to new creations like The Splinterfolk we'll be seeing a reimagined version of Brother Blood emerge as Buddy's rival as well. Blood seems like a natural choice for Animal Man because his powers lend themselves to a possible connection to The Red. But it's more than that. I’m going to give him a new origin that makes him even more of a perfect fit for Animal Man. He grew up with [ties to] The Red like Maxine, but Blood never had a stable family life it the support of parents like Buddy and Ellen. As a result, it corrupted him.”

For more from Lemire about what ANIMAL MAN fans can expect from the new “Splinter Species” arc, check out the full interviews that ran with the writer on MTV GEEK and NEWSARAMA, both of which contain exclusive interior art from the upcoming ANIMAL MAN #21 (in stores June 19th).

What's New In The New 52: Rise of the SPLINTERFOLK

Buddy Baker’s life is in complete turmoil—his only son is dead, his wife has left him and taken their daughter with her, and the crushing weight of fame bears down on him in the wake of his award nomination.

Now, he must also confront the monstrosities known as the SPLINTERFOLK, extreme activists who don't want to just save animals – they want to BECOME animals! No matter how grotesque that sounds, Jae Lee's designs take the concept to an even darker place. And wait until you see how series artist Steve Pugh brings these horrific creatures to life on the page! Plus, the SPLINTERFOLK play an integral part in the epic battle that will unfold over the coming months as writer Jeff Lemire expands Buddy's universe in new and unexpected ways … literally.

See you next week,

This Just Happened: The Doctor Is In

SPOILER ALERT: If you have not read JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #19 yet and do not wish to know what happens, stop reading this post now (major spoilers ahead!).

This summer, the highly-anticipated “Trinity War” crossover event will pit the Justice League, Justice League of America, and Justice League dark in an epic showdown that will have monumental effects on the entire DC Universe.

This week, JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #19 hit stores and kicked off “House of Misery,” the final story arc for the series before it heads into “Trinity War.” Guest-starring both The Flash and Swamp Thing, JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #19 ended with the New 52 debut of a major villain: Doctor Destiny!

“Basically, it’s a new villain for The New 52, but is actually an old face for Justice League fans," JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK co-writer Ray Fawkes recently teased to MTV GEEK about Doctor Destiny entering the series. "He’s going to be a really big problem. In many ways, he’s their nightmare come true. So they’re going to be psychically handling being changed so radically. For instance, Madame Xanadu aging so fast, then coming back to her youth; she’ll be grappling with that at the same time this insane new threat surfaces ... I think readers will be really excited when we have the reveal of the villain in this arc at the end of the issue. It is going to blow some minds, and they’re going to be really into it. It is a really exciting reveal … I think readers will want to take a look at this because [artist] Mikel Janin has pulled out all the stops. This will be packed full of wild stuff and it’s like nothing else being put out right now.”

Above, take a look at the final page of “House of Misery, Part One” as Doctor Destiny reveals himself to Swamp Thing in the House of Mystery. And in the comments section below, sound off on what impact you think Doctor Destiny will have on the members of the Justice League Dark during this time of great turmoil!

JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #19, written by Jeff Lemire and Ray Fawkes and illustrated by Mikel Janin and Vicente Cifuentes, is available in stores now.

TRINITY WAR Tie-ins Announced!

Earlier this month we announced that the highly anticipated “Trinity War” will be a  massive crossover event spanning the three Justice League titles—JUSTICE LEAGUE, JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA and JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK.

Well, that’s not all. This morning we revealed with IGN that there are tie-ins! TRINITY OF SIN: PANDORA, TRINITY OF SIN: PHANTOM STRANGER and CONSTANTINE will all have a part in “Trinity War”.

“It's not only the first New 52 meeting of all three Justice League teams, it's the first time we'll see how they all interrelate,” says editor Brian Cunningham who spoke with IGN about the upcoming event. Head on over to IGN for more insight from Cunningham and be sure to add “Trinity War” to your summer reading pile!

USA TODAY Announces "Trinity War"

This summer, a war of epic proportions will hit the DC Universe.

Kicking off in July, “Trinity War” will find the Justice League, the Justice League of America, and Justice League Dark teams battling one another in a monumental crossover event. Spanning over six issues throughout the pages of JUSTICE LEAGUE, JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA, and JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK, “Trinity War” will see Earth’s biggest heroes going head to head in an explosive arc that will defy the superhero genre.

“It's going to be really interesting when these characters do come together, because some of them haven't met, some of them have, and what happens and unfolds in this is going to force them to choose sides,” writer Geoff Johns (JUSTICE LEAGUE; JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA) revealed to USA TODAY, who announced “Trinity War” earlier this morning both online and in print.

As for how “Trinity War” will impact the future of the DC Universe?

“It's not going to end wrapped up in a bow,” Johns continued to tease. “Something really, really major happens that kicks off some pretty crazy stuff at the end of August.”

To read the full interview with Geoff Johns and with co-writer Jeff Lemire (JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA; JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK), head on over to USA TODAY. And above, check out Ivan Reis and Joe Prado’s jaw-dropping triptych cover for JUSTICE LEAGUE #22, JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #6, and JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #22.

Win a Copy of Green Arrow Signed and Sketched by Jeff Lemire

This month, the Emerald Archer entered a new era with GREEN ARROW #17, which marked the debut of the acclaimed new creative team of Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino. If you’ve read it, you know it brought both a change in tone to the series as well as the start of a gritty, street-level Green Arrow story that promises to reveal much about Oliver Queen’s past.

In honor of Green Arrow Week, Jeff Lemire has given us five signed copies of Green Arrow #17 to give away. Even better, each of them has a unique Oliver Queen sketch cover drawn by Jeff.

So how can you get your hands on one of these? Well, fortunately you won’t have to spend five years on a deserted island. All you’ll have to do is take a picture.

The comics we’re giving away have original sketch covers, but the regular cover of Green Arrow #17 is pretty darn cool as well. Here it is, if you haven’t seen it.

To win a signed and sketched Green Arrow comic, all you need to do is...

1) Follow @DCComics on Twitter.

2) Tweet us a picture of you recreating the pose shown in the above cover between 10 a.m. PST on Thursday, February 28th and 11:59 p.m. PST on Sunday, March 3rd. Be sure to use the hashtag #ArrowGiveaway in your tweet to have your entry counted.

Costumes and props in the photos are more than welcome, but not required. After the deadline, we’ll pick the five best photos and winners will be contacted on Twitter prior to being sent their comics (so check those direct messages!). We’ll post the winning photos here in THE SOURCE next week.

Good luck and hold those bowstrings taut!

Announcing the Emerald City Comic Con Exclusive Covers for BATMAN #17, GREEN ARROW #17 and JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #1

With less than a week until Emerald City Comic Con, it’s time to announce the con exclusive covers for some of DC Comics’ most popular series!

Available for $10 each at the DC Collectibles Boutique at the Graphitti Designs booth #1910, the ECCC exclusive variant covers for BATMAN #17, GREEN ARROW #17 and JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #1 are all must have collector’s items.

Illustrated by fan favorite artist Greg Capullo, the ECCC cover for BATMAN #17 takes the popular die-cut covers from “Death of the Family” and brings them back one last time for the epic final issue. The cover depicts The Joker’s face folded over Bruce Wayne’s to create a lasting image representing the ground breaking crossover which featured the Clown Prince of Crime’s triumphant return to DC COMICS—THE NEW 52.

The ECCC exclusive cover for GREEN ARROW #17 takes the cover for the first issue of the Emerald Archer’s bold new direction illustrated by Andrea Sorrentino and sets it against a grayscale rooftop.

And last but certainly not least, JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #1 will make its comic con debut with a new variant to complete your collection of now over 52 covers for the issue. Like the other covers drawn by series artist David Finch, the ECCC exclusive cover shows key members of the JLA raising the U.S. flag in color, while the other members of the team stand watch in a black and white background.

Visit the DC Entertainment booth #1908 and below, take a look at all three of the Emerald City Comic Con exclusive covers. Emerald City Comic Con will take place March 1-3 at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle, Washington.
