This Just Happened: Geoff Johns Bids Farewell to GREEN LANTERN

SPOILER ALERT: If you have not read GREEN LANTERN #20 yet and do not wish to know what happens, stop reading this post now (major spoilers ahead!).

GREEN LANTERN #20 hit stores this past week, and not only does this oversized issue contain the epic final chapter of the “Wrath of the First Lantern” saga, but it also marks the end of legendary scribe Geoff Johns’ time writing the series. Spanning more than 100 story issues over almost ten years, Johns has breathed new life into one of DC’s most iconic characters and truly created a universe truly worthy of Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps.

“The most emotional process was writing it, especially the last ten pages,” Johns recently told PASTE MAGAZINE. “The last ten pages are absolutely beautiful. I have the book in my hands now. It turned out really nicely and there’s some nice stuff in it looking back at Green Lantern, which is cool. It feels good though. I’m proud of the final issue. I’m proud of the work we did and I’m excited for what we did to be built on by the next crew. Just like we came in and built off a foundation, I think the next crew will too.”

COMIC BOOK RESOURCES Announces HUMAN BOMB

Fans of the Freedom Fighters have a reason to kick off this weekend with a celebration.

Earlier this morning, COMIC BOOK RESOURCES exclusively announced that this winter, DC Comics will be publishing an all-new 4-part miniseries, HUMAN BOMB. Written by THE RAY and THE PHANTOM LADY co-writers Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti and illustrated by the legendary Jerry Ordway, HUMAN BOMB #1 goes on sale December 5th.

“We're sort of plunked down in the middle of what's happening to him as he unravels the mystery of who he is, why he has certain abilities and how that came about,” teased Gray to COMIC BOOK RESOURCES about the protagonist’s origin. “It's tied deeply to the story itself in moving him forward; it's part mystery, it's part science fiction, and there's a lot of humanity in the character as he's struggling to deal with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and understand what's real and what's not.”

Head on over to COMIC BOOK RESOURCES to read their full interview with Gray and Palmiotti about HUMAN BOMB and to see their exclusive reveal of Ordway’s awesome cover to issue #1.

Exclusive first look at the T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS back-up story

If you’ve been following T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS, you’ve been reading the gripping story by Nick Spencer and have been seeing art by some of the industry’s top talent including Walter Simonson, Jerry Ordway and Wes Craig. And if that’s not enough T.H.U.N.D.E.R. for you, the final two issues of this six-part miniseries will include a new backup story. Written by Michael Uslan (BATMAN: DETECTIVE NO. 27, THE SPIRIT) and illustrated by Trevor McCarthy (BATMAN: GATES OF GOTHAM, NIGHTWING), the back-up story will focus on the Undersea Agent, a new member of the T.H.U.N.D.E.R. organization. “First appearing in the Silver Age of comics with artwork by such legends as Gil Kane (GREEN LANTERN, THE ATOM) and Wally Wood (EC Comics to designing Daredevil's red costume to ALL-STAR COMICS), Undersea Agent makes his first splash in the 21st Century and he is NOT your father's Undersea Agent,” Uslan exclusively told THE SOURCE. “Some may call this a super-hero adventure, others may refer to it as a spy story, but, in fact, these are the opening chapters of nothing short of a tale of abject HORROR! With cursed power comes grave responsibility.” “Going into the story, my idea for Undersea Agent began in a very different place than Michael's,” McCarthy continued. “Based on what I learned about the T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents, I had more of a classic 1960's archetypal character in mind, so I worked up those designs initially. But after having a very interesting phone conversation with Michael, my direction changed drastically. Michael envisioned this more along the lines of a horror comic, and that the transformation and look of the character need to be incredibly dramatic and horrific. That really got me interested! We batted around a few ideas and then I got to work. Michael suggested that since the human body is 2/3 water, what if that fact was represented more literally? As if the 2/3 water was redirected outwardly and all that remained was 1/3rd of flesh and bone? The end result is something I think is very unusual and certainly horrific – taking the flayed torso of a man and suspending it inside of a liquid humanoid form. In the end, it turned out to be a very complicated and color-heavy character, but it’s something that I'm really excited about!” Below, take an exclusive first look at Undersea Agent by checking out McCarthy’s character design and some interior art from T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS #5, which hits stands on March 21st. [gallery link="file" order="DESC"]

Exclusive Preview of T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS #2

Last month, you were reintroduced to the T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents with the first issue of a new six part miniseries, T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS VOL. 2.

Issue #2 (in stores today) continues the adventures of the death defying team as they face off against Demo and his monstrous underground army, The Subterraneans. To make matters worse for our heroes, their teammate Dynamo has been taken hostage and is about to be executed by Demo as a message to all of those who have doubted his power. Could this be the confrontation that kills the T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents? Or will they live long enough only to succumb to the death promised by the source of their own powers?

T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS #2 is written by Nick Spencer and is co-illustrated by Wes Craig. The issue also features an exclusive 5-page sequence drawn by legendary artist Jerry Ordway, previewed exclusively here on THE SOURCE.

DC UNIVERSE PRESENTS: A new arc and a new creative team beginning with Issue #6

A spotlight series starring a different hero in each story arc, DC UNIVERSE PRESENTS will be getting a new creative team with issue 6 – co-writers Dan DiDio and Jerry Ordway, with Ordway providing art. After the conclusion of the current, paranormal narrative starring DEADMAN, DiDio and Ordway will explore a science-fiction setting with a new take on CHALLENGERS OF THE UNKNOWN – created by the legendary Jack Kirby.

DiDio is no stranger to adapting Kirby’s work for DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, having written the critically acclaimed sleeper hit O.M.A.C., which is drawn with a distinct Kirby-flair by Keith Giffen.

Legendary artist Andy Kubert to join DC COMICS-THE NEW 52

Fresh off of his bestselling FLASHPOINT miniseries, industry legend Andy Kubert will be joining critically acclaimed writer Grant Morrison for a special, two-issue arc of ACTION COMICS in DC COMICS-THE NEW 52. Issues #5 and #6 will guest star the Legion of Super-Heroes, while also laying groundwork for things to come much, much later in Superman’s story. And keep an eye out for Krypto!

“When Editor Matt Idelson asked if I would be interested and/or able to fit into my schedule two upcoming issues of Action Comics with Grant, I couldn’t say no,” said Kubert. “I don’t know of any other artist that would have. Drawing the latest incarnation of Superman and working with one of the best writers on the planet made it a very easy decision for me. And in this story, I get to do some VERY iconic stuff! I gotta admit, I’m a little nervous... Fun Fact for those keeping score: I had never drawn Superman in a comics interior for an entire issue. I had done inking over Dan Jurgens and Jerry Ordway for an issue each over their beautiful pencils way (and I mean WAY) back when but this is my first opportunity to pencil the Man of Steel interior pages for my very own!”

After Kubert’s two-issue take on ACTION COMICS, Rags Morales will return as the series’ regular artist.
