NYCC 2010: BATMAN: EUROPA by Jim Lee and co-writers Brian Azzarello and Matteo Casali
This January, fans will get a Batman tale like no other, by two of the most masterful creators to ever take on the Dark Knight.
BATMAN: EUROPA, a four-issue mini-series written to gritty perfection by FIRST WAVE’s Brian Azzarello and Matteo Casali with an all-star cast of artists, including Giuseppe Camuncoli (who is handling layouts for the entire series!), Diego Latorre and Jock. With a first issue painted over Cammo's layouts by none other than superstar artist and DC Comics Co-Publisher Jim Lee, who as you know, is no stranger to Batman. And if it involves Jim, you can guarantee it’s a major Batman tale.
In the pages of BATMAN: EUROPA, the impossible has happened – the Batman is on the brink of defeat, at the hands of a virus with no cure. Surely there’s someone that can help him? Well, there is – the Joker. Who infected Batman with the virus? What does the Joker have to do to save him? And how can it all happen before the Dark Knight collapses? Together, the unlikely teammates and arch-foes travel through Europe cobbling together clues while the clock ticks down.
We’ve got a look at the first cover from the series, by Jim Lee, and boy, it’s a beauty.
A peek at COMMISSIONER GORDON artist Francesco Francavilla’s artwork
Some of the most fun I’ve had doing this blog is seeing the process behind a lot of my favorite books. Whether it’s an inked David Finch BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT cover or a Scott Snyder DETECTIVE COMICS script, the chance to get a glimpse of what happens behind the curtain makes the final product that much more exciting.
We’ve got a special treat for you today, Source gang – after swinging by and getting a look at artist Francesco Francavilla’s layouts for November’s DETECTIVE COMICS co-feature, starring Commissioner Gordon, I knew we had to show it on this here blog. So, without further adieu, I’ll pass the mic to the creative team behind the story, writer Scott Snyder and artist Francesco Francavilla. Scott, take it away:
“I can't tell you all how excited I am about Francesco's pages so far. His story isn't just a back-up, it's tied to the feature - part of one big piece. And it's about someone from Jim Gordon's past, someone who has haunted him for years, returning to Gotham. It's a dark, twisted and piercing story, and to my mind, Francesco's pages perfectly capture the tone and feel of the whole thing. His work so far has been amazingly fresh and affecting - I cannot wait for people to see his finished pages. He's one of the most talented, enthusiastic, and creative guys I've had the pleasure of working with - couldn't be more excited for what's to come!”
But just what goes into the process of creating these jaw-dropping pages? Well, let’s ask the artist himself.
“In my personal experience, the layouts are maybe the most important stage of the whole comic book making process. This is when, for the very first time, I translate in visuals what was just text a moment before. It takes imagination (and a bit of experience) to break down a white blank page into panels and fill it with the scripted story. 95% of the time, my layouts represent a blueprint for the final pencils.
Initially I do a very rough breakdown of the page, with mostly silhouetted figures. Then I start to work into these rough lines and add details. I also start to put in shadows, blacks, grays. I like to see - already at layout stage - the whole mood and feel I wanna give to the pages. When needed, I also like to hand draw/write the SFX: IMO they are part of the storytelling when used effectively. The result is what you see here, something very close to what the finished page will look like in terms of composition and design.
Once approved, I pencil an 11x17 version of the page (the layouts are drawn in comic book size) and then do my best with inks and colors.
I am sure you guys are gonna enjoy this Gordon co-feature and the Batman feature Jock is drawing. Scott is a hell of a writer and is cooking quite a cool story for our favorite caped crusader.”

Another surprise revelation hitting Batman in November
Or should I say Bat-men?
As THE NEW YORK POST broke this morning, not only will Bruce Wayne be returning to a new set of Batman duds, but his first sidekick, Dick Grayson, will continue to fight crime on the streets of Gotham as Batman, and under the banner of “Batman Inc.”
But what does that mean for the Batman titles moving forward?
We’ve got the breakdown for you here. Fear not.
Starting in November, DETECTIVE COMICS, BATMAN and BATMAN AND ROBIN will feature the ongoing adventures of Dick Grayson as Batman, with Damian as Robin. Meanwhile, Bruce Wayne will take center stage in the pages of Grant Morrison and Yanick Paquette’s BATMAN INC. and writer/artist David Finch’s BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT.
What does this mean for Bruce and Dick Grayson? Can the world handle two Batmen? We can’t give everything away here, but we did manage to corner Batman Group Editor Mike Marts for a quick tease, and a look at an amazing spread from the first issue of BATMAN INC. Take it away, Mike:
“Just as readers were getting comfortable with the idea of former sidekick Dick Grayson playing the role of Batman, along comes Bruce Wayne’s triumphant return to the Cape and Cowl. Is Gotham City ready for two Batmen? Is the world? And who’s to say the fun will end there?”
Your BATMAN solicits for November
It’s that time again folks – your chance to peek into the future of the Dark Knight. A future which is pretty bright, actually. What’s in store? Well, we’ve given you a sense of it over the last few weeks: BATMAN INC., THE DARK KNIGHT, BATMAN AND ROBIN, BATWOMAN and DETECTIVE COMICS will be launching or sporting new creative teams this month. Earlier this week, we broke the news that Jock would be pairing with writer Scott Snyder this November to tackle the Dark Knight’s adventures in DETECTIVE COMICS. But there’s more to that book. Pairing with the main feature, Snyder will pen a COMMISSIONER GORDON co-feature, with artist Francesco Francavilla (WildStorm’s GARRISON) on art, and I’m going to step back and let Francesco’s jaw-dropping art speak for itself:
The co-feature, which will not only standalone but also become part of a greater story Snyder is telling, is obviously in good hands, huh? But what do the creators have to say about it? Scott?
"I'm a huge fan of Francesco's work and have been for quite some time. His style is dark and daring with a good amount of noir to it, but there's also a striking physicality to his art - his characters always look very real, very vulnerable and human. Which is why I always thought he'd be perfect for the job; because this story is dark and dramatic with some big revelations, but it's also about Jim Gordon, the man, coming to terms with some very tough skeletons from his past... Or rather, one skeleton in particular - someone who has just now returned to Gotham, too... So I simply could not be more excited about Francesco's involvement. With Jock on feature, Francesco on back-up, this is exactly the team I'd hoped for! (Huge giant-penny-sized thanks to our editor Mike Marts for the creative freedom and support.) Can't wait to see what you think of the book, DC Nation!"
And the artist himself:
"I have been a fan of everything Batman since... ever! I've also been a fan as of late of the terrific storytelling of that talented fella known as Scott Snyder, so you can imagine my reaction when I got the invitation to be part of this run of DETECTIVE COMICS. I pinched myself, then asked my wife to pinch me, and only then did I realize it was real. All I can say is--can't wait to start on this! I read Scott's script and... you guys are in for a treat!"
I think, based on that teaser image alone, things are looking good for DETECTIVE COMICS in November. Stay tuned to The Source today and beyond for more info.
Jock joins Scott Snyder on DETECTIVE COMICS
A few weeks back, we unveiled half of the new DETECTIVE COMICS creative team. Namely, that AMERICAN VAMPIRE writer Scott Snyder would be stepping into the writer’s seat, handling both the main story and a Commissioner Gordon co-feature. And now we’re ready to break the news about the artist that will be paired with Snyder on the book.
Say hello to your new DETECTIVE COMICS artist: Jock.
Jock should be no stranger to Batman fans in particular, and comic fans in general. He’s responsible for a sterling run on Vertigo’s THE LOSERS and, most recently, a stint on DETECTIVE handling the tail end of Batwoman’s run on the title.
What does this mean for DETECTIVE COMICS readers? Well, in addition to a hard-hitting, noir story from Snyder, fans will be getting a gritty, dynamic and edgy visual representation every months. But you don’t need me to tell you that. Let’s hear it from the writer himself. Take it away, Scott:
“I could not be more excited about working with Jock. Over the last couple months, I've spoken to some artists whose work I love, but Jock was always my top choice for this run on Detective Comics. I've been a huge fan of his work for a long time. His style is bold and dynamic - perfect for the kind of big, twisted Batman story we're going to tell together :) And with David Baron on colors, I can't wait for November! And please, let us know what you think, DC Nation!”
One of the most interesting parts of Comic-Con for me -- as both a DC guy and Batman fan -- was watching the instant chemistry and excitement both Scott and Jock had for the character and their upcoming run. It was contagious. Right, Jock?
“Scott and I got the chance to talk a number of times over Comic-Con weekend in San Diego and his original and striking hook for the story
took me completely by surprise - I couldn't believe it hadn't been done before and I was instantly hooked...
“I'm thrilled to be working with him on this and along with David Baron on colors can't wait to get this story out there.”
Can’t wait until November? No worries. We’ve got a first look at what’s in store with this here teaser image. And stay tuned to this here blog for more Bat-news in the coming days.
