Last month, JOE KUBERT PRESENTS #5 continued the gorgeous anthology-style six issue miniseries curated by the legendary Joe Kubert.

In stores today, the final issue of the miniseries features the conclusion of “Spit,” where the boy’s adventures on a whaling ship lead to an important decision concerning his future.

Next up is “The Ruby,” where Kubert and Pete Carlsson tell the origin story of one of DC Comics’ most magical heroes from the Golden Age.

The most talked about prequel miniseries in the comic industry are about to be collected in 4 deluxe hardcover editions. Wrapped in covers designed by Chip Kidd, award winning book jacket designer (Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park, Bret Easton Ellis’ American Psycho and much much more) and writer (Batman Death By Design, The Cheese Monkeys), they will arrive this summer.

Having previously designed a variant cover for BEFORE WATCHMEN: RORSCHACH issue #3, we asked Chip Kidd about what it means to him to design these, destined to be, historic covers. Here’s what he had to say, "To design these covers is both a privilege and an honor. And a challenge!,” said Kidd. “The 'Before Watchmen' creative team did a truly impressive job, and I will try to do justice to them. So to speak."

JOE KUBERT PRESENTS #1 begins with a Hawkman tale written, drawn and colored by Kubert (who started drawing Hawkman over 60 years ago). And what a story it is! Kubert uses it as a spring-board for not only an action-packed tale of Hawkman and Shayera’s first voyage to Earth, but also for making a profound statement about humanity.
 
Next is Brian Buniak’s “Angel and the Ape,” an absurdly comic tale about private detectives Angel O’Day and Sam Simeon. This story takes all the classic elements of a classic hard-boiled film noir and turns it on its head … and then kicks it.
 
Reminiscent of Kubert’s starkly penciled black-and-white art and the overall tone of his graphic novels DONG XOAI, VIETNAM 1965 and YOSSEL, the anthology continues with Kubert’s next story, “Spit.” It follows the hard-knock life of its titular character, an unloved and lonely orphan, who finds his way onto a ship as a cabin boy. This is going to be one heck of an adventure!
 
And finally, we have Sam Glanzman’s triumphant return to the comic medium with “U.S.S. Stevens, I Remember.” A heart-wrenching and true remembrance of Glanzmen’s time served in WWII, this story is a harrowing look at the atrocities and inhumanity of war.
