DCE CO-PUBLISHER JIM LEE’S HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE

I collaborated with Brian Azzarello on SUPERMAN: FOR TOMORROW, so that might make me a little biased, but I think he's one of the best writers in the comic book industry. His work is smart, funny and crisp. The kind of stuff that makes an artist look good.

Back in 2008, he teamed up with an artist named Lee Bermejo for an original graphic novel called JOKER. Lee's work is jaw-dropping already; he doesn't need anyone to make him look good, and the pairing was magic. They'd worked together on the LEX LUTHOR: MAN OF STEEL miniseries years before, but on this graphic novel they brought their collaboration to a whole new level. It's raw, gorgeous and provocative and it would make for one mean holiday gift.

(Everybody’s Talkin’ About) DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, Wednesday Morning (ET) Edition

Last Friday, COMIC BOOK RESOURCES and Golden Apple Comics in Los Angeles hosted a wrap party for the first month of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52. The writers and artists in attendance included Brian Buccellato, Bernard Chang, Mike Costa, Dan DiDio, Josh Fialkov, Sterling Gates, Adam Glass, Kyle Higgins and Scott Lobdell. Head on over to COMIC BOOK RESOURCES to hear all of these creators talk about what titles from DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 were their favorites. “It was really exciting to work with Francis on the book because he saw this book visually first,” said DC Entertainment Co-Publisher and O.M.A.C. writer Dan DiDio about THE FLASH. “He was talking about images and speed and how he was going to be able to interpret the fastest man in the world. And when you saw the art come in, you couldn’t help but get super excited because you saw this visual interpretation that feels incredibly fresh.”

Sara Lima at COMICVINE published a piece on how DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 has made iconic leading lady Lois Lane into a powerful, self-sufficient, successful and integral female character. “This Lois finally gets to be the boss. She's smart, sassy, and has no problem standing up to the man who promoted her to Vice President,” wrote Lima. “She's certainly stronger, more interesting and has a lot more depth.”

Finally, as gamers everywhere already know, BATMAN: ARKHAM CITY, the long-awaited sequel to the blockbuster game, BATMAN: ARKHAM ASYLUM, hits stores in less than two weeks. Grant Morrison discusses the cover of Batman and Robin #13

[Editor's note: Grant Morrison provided the below commentary for the bonus material in the new BATMAN AND ROBIN MUST DIE! Hardcover - for more behind-the-scenes material from Grant, Frank Quitely and Frazer Irving, be sure to check out the book, now in stores!]

As regular readers of these collected editions will know, I sketch out pretty much all of the cover roughs for this series in my notebook at the start of the creative process. Here are the last of those scribbled ideas, alongside the polished, professional finished versions by Frank Quitely.

Issue Thirteen

Back in BATMAN #428, in 1988, the Joker had famously used a crowbar to beat Jason Todd, the unlucky second Robin, to within an inch of his life before blowing him with a bomb. As is the way of comic book characters, Jason Todd eventually made it back from the dead many years later (and even made an appearance as the Red Hood in this very series), but I wanted to see the new Robin redress the balance in his own inimitable way — hence this image of a grinning, unrepentant Joker taking his skull fractures with a smile

A look inside the LUTHOR HC with Lee Bermejo

They say you you can't go back, the past is the past. It isn't always true. When Azzarello and I found out we had the opportunity to add some additional material to our Lex Luthor story, it was like someone gave us the keys to the DeLorean. Although I think we can both look back at Luthor with some pride, there's also a bit of unfinished business there. That is, until now.

October sees the release of the NEW AND IMPROVED Luthor. A new hardcover collection of the original mini-series with all new story pages (half an issue's worth) and bonus sketchbook material. Also, when I say new story material, I really mean it. We've actually added new sequences throughout the book as well as adding pieces to existing scenes and re-shuffling the position of others.

This 'new cut' really enhances the original story and broadens it. For example, here are a couple pages we added to issue three, sans coloring and lettering.

In the original version, the fight between Superman and Batman was cut off towards the end. These two new pages continue the last page of the fight and allow readers to really find out what Superman was after.

What you see here is just the beginning. Wrapped in a new cover, this book is our time machine. Jump in with us.

Things continue to get complicated for the GOTHAM CITY SIRENS

Now that Mr. J's secret is out in the open, will the girls' reaction take them to the point of no return? And will Harley Quinn ever be the same? Only writer Paul Dini and artist Guillem March know for sure, but a few pages never hurt, right? Especially right before a holiday weekend.

GOTHAM CITY SIRENS #6 hits today.

Will the Joker cross paths with the GOTHAM CITY SIRENS?

What's got the Clown Prince of Crime riled up? What are Catwoman and Poison Ivy trying to track down? What's Harley doing on a date with Bruce Wayne? Uh, is that Bruce Wayne? These questions and a few more will be answered in GOTHAM CITY SIRENS #4, from the regular team of writer Paul Dini and artist Guillem March, which hits 9/30. What? Can't wait? Well, we've got five pages with your name on it below.
