USA TODAY Previews JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #1 and Interviews Geoff Johns and David Finch

Six months ago, we announced JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA, a new ongoing series from the acclaimed creative team of Geoff Johns (JUSTICE LEAGUE; AQUAMAN; GREEN LANTERN) and David Finch (BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT). And this week, the wait is finally over, as JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #1 will fly onto stands.

This morning, USA TODAY ran an exclusive preview of the issue and interviewed Johns and Finch about the launch of the series, its eclectic cast of characters, upcoming villains, and more.

“It's about recruits who didn't necessarily want the job and were going on missions they weren't necessarily passionate about, but they did it for various reasons,” Johns teased to USA TODAY about the series’ launch. “I love Batman and Superman and Wonder Woman, but I do find myself gravitating toward the underdogs.”

"It's not Batman and Superman and the big, big characters, and we can do a lot of pretty crazy stuff with these guys. People are going to be pretty surprised. It gets a little bit more wild than what you'd see in JUSTICE LEAGUE proper,” Finch continued. “I love the villains the most. This is so up my alley.”

To see the exclusive preview of JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #1 and to read the full interview with Johns and Finch, pick up a copy of today’s USA TODAY and head over to the front page of the “Life” section, or simply just check out their website!

Andrew Kreisberg Talks JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA'S VIBE #1

This February, the just-formed Justice League of America will introduce an all-new team of superheroes to the DC Universe. And with the launch of JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA, another one of the members of the team’s roster will also be getting his own solo ongoing series: Cisco Ramone, a.k.a. Vibe. Hitting stores on February 20, JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA’S VIBE #1 comes to you from the creative team of writer Andrew Kreisberg and artist Pete Woods. Set in Detroit, the series’ inaugural issue is also co-written by JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA writer Geoff Johns.

But who exactly is Vibe?

“We’ve made him a really grounded person and a very realistic person,” Kreisberg explained to IGN about the series’ protagonist. “In some ways, there’s sort of a wish fulfillment for comic book fans because he’s a teenage kid that’s suddenly given superpowers and suddenly he’s in the Justice League of America working alongside the heroes that he, as a kid, had worshipped. In some ways, he’s teenage me or teenage you, and suddenly he gets to be with the Justice League. And he reacts in what we hope is a very realistic way. He has a lot of questions and he’s got a lot of fears. The DC Universe is populated with a lot of god-like characters like Superman, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, and a lot of inscrutable characters like Batman. What was most exciting for us was the opportunity to create almost a real person who gets thrust into this world that the audience can really relate to and that we can really dig into as a person.”

“One of the smartest things Geoff said early on was, ‘It's really important we come up with a franchise for him, and it can't just be that he has powers,”’ Kreisberg continued to NEWSARAMA. “So we hit upon the idea that, since the Darkseid invasion began in Detroit, this is where the membrane is weakest between the dimensions, because this is where they punched through. And this left a crack in the fabric of reality between all the dimensions of all the Earths. Things kind of fall through, and people sneak through, and if there's going to be another invasion, this is where it will begin. Since Cisco draws his powers from the energy of these vibrational cracks, he's also able to sense these incursions. He knows when things are here that shouldn't be, or when things come through. And he says, with some irony, that he's essentially become an inter-dimensional border cop. I think that gives a strong franchise to the book. He's here to clean up Detroit from these incursions, but the people he's working for — Amanda Waller and A.R.G.U.S. — don't always, necessarily, have his best interest at heart, or the best interest of some of the innocent people who come through. So it's going to lead to a lot of interesting conflicts.”

To read more from Andrew Kreisberg about the launch of JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA’s VIBE, see the full interviews that ran this morning with the writer on MTV GEEK, IGN, NEWSARAMA, COMIC VINE, AOL’s COMICS ALLIANCE and COMICOSITY. And don’t forget to visit each of these outlets for your first looks at Pete Woods’ interior art for JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA’S VIBE #1.

Talking JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #1 with Geoff Johns

This winter, the DC Universe will witness the birth of an all-new team of superheroes: The Justice League of America. Hitting stores on February 20, JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #1 comes to you from the creative team of writer Geoff Johns and artist David Finch, and features an unpredictable roster of characters, including Vibe, Catwoman, Steve Trevor, Martian Manhunter, Simon Baz, Stargirl, Katana, Green Arrow and Hawkman.

But how will JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA vary from JUSTICE LEAGUE?

“When I was thinking about whether or not a second Justice League title would work, essentially, I wanted to make sure that if I was going to write another team book it was had it's own point of view, its own purpose both creatively and in the bigger DC Universe,” Johns revealed to MTV GEEK. “So the Justice League has been positioned as like the A-list, the big iconic superheroes, and the Justice League of America is a very different team. As evident by the initial lineup, it's not a team of A-listers. I think the biggest A-lister on there is probably Green Arrow, who knows it and flaunts it a little on the team. But the team is built with potential and that's really what I wanted to dive into because I've always loved the big heroes, I love the big seven. Batman's great, Superman's great, but there is something that I've always really enjoyed about getting into characters that you might not have looked twice at. Green Lantern, before we relaunched it with our rebirth, I think we obviously expanded the fan base of the character. Working on JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA, I like delving into characters like Mr. Terrific and Doctor Midnight that people might not know very well, they might have heard of, but their judgment is a little quick. It's the same thing as Aquaman and so I wanted to create a team of characters that people would look at and wonder what the hell we are doing. In a good way hopefully. I wanted to create a group of characters that had potential and it's all about unlocking potential for me. The characters that I really enjoy writing and I gravitate towards are characters that might at first glance feel less than other superheroes and that's the whole point of the Justice League of America. It's all about finding characters who you have low expectations for and hopefully they surprise you both in story and in the universe. Designing this book to be all about finding the potential in you no matter who you are is what, for me, makes the book a lot of fun to work on.”

“JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA has its own big storyline and its own big world its creating that starts right off with issue #1 and delves into a darker corner of the DC Universe that we have yet to explore,” Johns teased to NEWSARAMA. “And that's going to be villains. That's a big piece of what the JLA is. It will play a big role in Trinity War, but a big role in the DC Universe after that as well. We've got it planned out through 2013 and beyond.”

To read more from Geoff Johns about JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #1 and the launch of this eagerly-anticipated new series, head on over to MTV GEEK, IGN, COMIC BOOK RESOURCES, NEWSARAMA and COMIC VINE to read the full interviews that ran today with the acclaimed writer. And don’t forget to pick up your copy of JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #1 when it flies into stores next month!

What are the most-ordered JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #1 state variants? Find out here!

Back in November, we let you know that JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #1 would boast a whopping 52 variant covers, featuring the individual flags of all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. Currently, all the variant covers are available for ordering - but time is running out! Monday's the last day comic retailers can up their orders – and your last chance to make sure you get a copy of your state's cover.

We've got a rundown of how the states stack up currently, and so far, it's looking like fans in Texas are in the lead. But it's not too late! Fans and retailers still have a few more days to up orders and beat Texas as the most best-selling state variant. And, hey, Texas, keep up the good work (shh, don’t tell the rest of the country we said that)!

In addition to the state variants and the standard cover, you can also order the complete, 53-comic set as a combo pack. Now that's patriotism, eh?

"What better way to show your state pride than by reserving a copy now of JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #1 that features your very own state's flag?" said Bob Wayne, DC Entertainment Senior Vice President of Sales. "Not only that, but you get the first issue of what's sure to be an epic, ongoing series by Geoff Johns and David Finch – sounds like a win-win to me. And as a native Texan, I’m not at all surprised to see that Texas is currently #1!"

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #1 flies onto shelves on February 6. Which state variant editions will you be picking up? Let us know in the comments section below and make sure to send in your orders for this exciting series launch before this coming Monday!

5.2 Reasons to Look Forward to 2013 So Far

Happy New Year and welcome to the first edition of 5.2 Reasons in 2013! After taking a week off for the holidays, your favorite DCComics.com number-and-decimal-based weekly column is back and ready to list the heck out of things!

We all survived the impending apocalypse, drank copious amounts of eggnog, stayed up all night to watch the ball drop, and then passed out for 12 hours out of sheer exhaustion and enthusiasm over counting down the numbers (the Count and us need to hang out more often). But now we're awake and excited for the brand new year! Why? Well, we're about to tell you.

Last year was a great year for comics, with some all-around fantastic moments. But as awesome as 2012 was, 2013 is already shaping up to be a great one, which is why we're giving you the 5.2 Reasons to Look Forward to 2013 So Far!

1. Joker's Last Laugh
Writer Scott Snyder simultaneously put a smile on our face and a scream in our throat when he brought the Joker into the spotlight and kicked off the "Death of the Family" crossover event running through the various Bat-books. Systematically and psychotically, the Joker has personally attacked every member of the Batman Family, striking them at their deepest core. However, that was all the setup to the punchline that finally plays out in BATMAN #17.

2. Jeff Lemire Goes Green
Since the launch of DC COMICS—THE NEW 52, writer Jeff Lemire has been dealing with the Red in the pages of Animal Man. Starting in February, he'll be adding another color to his repertoire by picking up the bow as the ongoing writer on Green Arrow. We've long been fans of Lemire's work, so seeing him take aim with Oliver Queen gets us all aquiver. Oh, also, yadda yadda yadda, something about a bulls-eye. (We're required to do that whenever we talk about archery.)

3. The Wrath of the First Lantern
First introduced in the GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #1, the mysterious First Lantern enters the galactic playing field in a big way following the conclusion of the "Rise of the Third Army" crossover currently running through the various Lantern titles. Not much is known about the "Wrath of the First Lantern" arc, which begins in GREEN LANTERN #17, but if Johns' previous work is any indication, it's sure to be game-changingly brilliant.

4. Morrison, Exit Stage Awesome
In a very, very bittersweet moment, writer Grant Morrison wraps up both his Action Comics run and his Batman magnum opus in 2013. While we greatly look forward to seeing how his two epics—starring the two biggest characters in comics—conclude, we're even more excited to be able to go back and read both from start to finish in what is sure to be one mind-bending, awe-inspiring sitting. We can only imagine afterward that it will be like in "2001: A Space Odyssey." Only, instead of stars, it’ll be, "My god. It's full of awesome."

5. Justice League of America
Geoff Johns brought together the World's Greatest Heroes in the pages of Justice League. Now, he's bringing together another team, consisting of heroes like Green Arrow, Stargirl and Green Lantern, along with some other characters with more questionable moral standards (we're looking at you Catwoman—really, who could blame us?). The reason behind this new team and the role they'll play remains an enigma for now, but the cast of characters and the teaming of Johns with artist David Finch already has us intrigued.

5.1 Anyone Else Notice SHAZAM! in This?

5.2 Vibe. Clearly.

Seriously though, we're actually pretty excited to see what Geoff Johns and Andrew Kriesberg can do. What are you all excited for this year? Let us know in the comments below!
