(Everybody’s Talkin’ About) DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, Thursday Morning (ET) Edition

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY continued their exclusive weekly previews of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 with BATMAN #2, which received prominent placement on the site’s homepage. The preview was picked up by PEREZ HILTON. “There's Batman and bad guys and the Bat-cycle! What more could you ask for?” wrote Perez.

MAXIM caught up with DC Entertainment Co-Publisher and JUSTICE LEAGUE artist Jim Lee about New York Comic Con, which kicks off tonight at the Javits Center in Manhattan. “I’d say bathe every day, that would be top on my priority list,” Lee said while distributing his basic rules for surviving NYCC. “I would think, as a fan, plan your day. If you wing it, you’ll have a decent experience, but you will not be utilizing the experience to the full capacity.” Be sure to head over to MAXIM to read the full interview and check out your exclusive first look at Jim’s variant cover for BATMAN #2, in stores next week.

BET broke the exclusive news that New York-based Marc Bernardin would be taking over as the writer for STATIC SHOCK, beginning with issue #7. “I relate to his love for family, his sort of passion for science and technology,” Bernardin said of series protagonist Virgil Hawkins. “I like his selflessness when it comes to the people of his city.”

“I wanted to get to know Virgil a bit more than we have so far,” Bernardin revealed to COMIC BOOK RESOURCES when asked about the direction he intends to take on STATIC SHOCK. “The thing that defines a hero is choice. They choose to do the hard thing when everyone else would do the easy one. They choose to put themselves in harm's way. So we need to know more about the kind of person who makes that kind of choice, especially one so young.”

Jim Lee talks Justice League leading up to this weekend's digital 101 sale

A new era has begun for both DC Comics and the JUSTICE LEAGUE. And to celebrate this momentous new era with Geoff Johns and Jim Lee, DC Digital Comics is holding a special 2-Day Justice League 101 Sale. This weekend only get 101 various issues of JUSTICE LEAGUE digital comics for only $.99 each. You can buy classic adventures such as the team’s original appearance in BRAVE AND THE BOLD, modern masterpieces like Grant Morrison’s acclaimed JLA run, and even Elseworlds tales like Darwyn Cooke’s 1950s style epic DC: THE NEW FRONTIER.

We interviewed DC Entertainment co-publisher and current JUSTICE LEAGUE artist Jim Lee about his experiences with the Justice League as a young fan, how early issues of the series influenced his take and why he’s looking forward to completing his collection with digital comics.

THE SOURCE: You mentioned that you were a big fan of the Justice League from the original series. How’d you get into that era and what about it appealed to you?

Jim Lee: It was when I was a little kid. My parents would buy me the comics when we traveled around. Those had 100 pages for around 60 cents. [Laughs] The lead story was current, but they always had a backup that was drawn from the Golden Age or the Silver Age. That’s really how I learned about the backstories and alternate versions of these characters. That’s really how I learned about the DC Universe. And because they would crossover so much between Earth 1 and Earth 2 and Earth X, it was also my first exploration of the Multiverse. Plus, they always had puzzles! I was probably in 4th or 5th grade, and I would cut out images from the comics, I would do the crossword or word searches—which is how I learned about some of the editorial people there, like Julie Schwartz, because they were often the answers to some of the puzzles. Those comics are now in horrible, horrible condition, but I thoroughly enjoyed them.

TS: How has that era influenced you and what you’re going to be doing now with JUSTICE LEAGUE?

JL: I think what I liked about a lot of those stories is that often times they would pair up the characters, which was always interesting to me as a fan. “How is this character going to interact with this other character?” It was not often you saw the entire League move around as a group. More often than not—at least from my memory—they would split up in pairs or halves and tackle different problems separately. So, I always liked to see the pairings of the heroes and who they faced off with on the villains side. I don’t know if Geoff is doing this consciously or subconsciously, but we have that within our take of the Justice League. It really starts with the pairing of Green Lantern and Batman and explores that relationship a lot in the first issue. It’s a lot of fun to do because it definitely harkens back to the days when I was a kid reading those stories. It has that vibe to it—obviously in a very modern way—but it’s reminiscent of some of the classic storytelling.

TS: Many of the older issues that will part of the JUSTICE LEAGUE 101 sale definitely reflect that style. One that sticks out in my mind is the Search for the Seven Soldiers, which was all about the team splitting up and battling various villains.

JL: Right! Exactly! What’s really cool about the Justice League, particularly around the 100s is that they often would face off against a bunch of different super-villains. My parents weren’t crazy about me buying comics, so they would buy me one comic a month. But when you read the Justice League you feel like you’re getting seven stories. You’re getting all these different villains you never heard of before—because they were drawn from the individual continuities of the character’s books. I felt like I was getting multiple comics within one comic.

TS: You’ve gone from reading JUSTICE LEAGUE as a kid to now launching a new JUSTICE LEAGUE series. What’s it like for you personally working on this book?

JL: You mean how cool this is? [Laughs] I knew this was something I would eventually do at DC and working on BATMAN and SUPERMAN and having some of the Justice League show up in those two runs that I did, I think it set the stage. Geoff Johns and I have been friends for years and talked about doing a project together and I think the timing was just right. He’s worked on a lot of the characters individually. We wanted to do something big and fun and JUSTICE LEAGUE fits that bill to a T. So I think, in some sense, as you launch The New 52 and are looking to establish a tonality, JUSTICE LEAGUE ended being the perfect vehicle.

TS: You talked about the older Justice League issues you read when you were younger, but are there any modern stories that you’ve really enjoyed that stick out in your mind?

JL: Obviously Grant Morrison’s run was pretty phenomenal, with artist Howard Porter. That stuff was really solid. But I remember when I was breaking into comics it was around the time when Justice League with Kevin Maguire and Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis was coming out. That was so refreshingly different. The combination of the writing—which was very meta and broke the fourth wall and was irreverent but had serious beats in it—with Kevin’s art—which is so nuanced and so subtle—there was nothing else like it at the time. I remember buying it and just being so excited by how different that book was. You had covers where the characters were standing there and you were looking down at them, which is not typically what you do with superhero comics. Usually, it’s from the “worm’s eye” perspective because they’re larger than life. I think they really broke new creative ground and I just had so much fun reading that book.

TS: We actually have the first seven issues of JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL included in the sale, so new readers can now go back and read those stories they may have missed out on. What are your thoughts on the digital world and things like the Justice League 101 Sale?

JL: The thing about my comic collection is that I never had complete runs of anything. Even with Justice League, a lot of times I didn’t know how the stories ended. [Laughs] So, this is an opportunity to read these series and finish them. I have these really beat up copies and over the years I’ve gone and bought new copies at Comic Con for like $15 or $20, but I wouldn’t open those up and read them. The nice thing about digital is that it allows me to carry these books with me wherever I go and catch up on my back reading from 38 years ago. It’s exciting. Some of this stuff I’ll be seeing for the first time ever, so I’m pretty excited about that.

The Justice League 101 Sale runs from September 24 to September 25! Don't miss this chance to own some incredible JUSTICE LEAGUE comics for an amazing price!

(Everybody’s Talkin’ About) DC Comics-The New 52, Thursday Morning (ET) Edition

Look what just landed on our desks!

Yesterday marked the release of 12 more titles in DC Comics-The New 52. As press continues to roll in, check out some of the highlights from the past couple of days.

For the fourth week in a row, IFANBOY selected a title from DC Comics-The New 52 as its Pick of the Week. Their selection this week? WONDER WOMAN #1 by Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang. “In this issue, she’s a straight up action star, with the power of a god,” IFANBOY wrote of the Amazonian princess.

And speaking of WONDER WOMAN, the series’ critically acclaimed creative team was interviewed by MTV GEEK, IO9 and COMIC BOOK RESOURCES. “There's a very clear sense that what's happening to these characters actually means something. Some of them are in real danger, and why are they in danger? Because they're up against something that is much more powerful and immoral than they are,” Azzarello said to COMIC BOOK RESOURCES. “ I always shy away from the word ‘evil,’ but let's just say there's some big evils in this book.”

UNDER THE RADAR chatted with Cliff Chiang, who will be part of a WONDER WOMAN release party at Bergen Street Comics in Brooklyn, New York this Saturday. “We're revamping the gods and their roles in the world. They're kind of conniving and scheming for power,” Chiang explained. “Wonder Woman is a pawn of theirs. Sometimes she upsets their plans and sometimes she unwittingly helps them achieve their goals. It's been great modernizing the gods and getting rid of togas and all the classical Greek architecture. The heart of all that mythology is great, but we don't want any of this to feel old. We want readers to see a very clear creative vision. We're not just rehashing.”

In anticipation of a couple local signings over the course of the next week, THE LOS ANGELES EXAMINER gave Los Angeles native Eric Wallace’s MISTER TERRIFIC a 5-star review, calling it a “strong debut issue.”

THE HUFFINGTON POST interviewed BATMAN and SWAMP THING writer Scott Snyder. “All of a sudden these murders begin that start to alert him to the fact that maybe he doesn't know the city as well as he thought,” Snyder said of the Dark Knight. “there's an enemy from old Gotham nursery rhymes. An ancient evil in Gotham that's been there for centuries. Because Gotham really 300 years old, no matter how long Bruce has been Batman, he's not as old as the city. So maybe the city belonged to another symbol, a rival symbol, long before it did the Bat, and maybe that sort of organization or that enemy just hasn't really been bothering with Batman until now.” Head on over to THE HUFFINGTON POST to read the full interview and check out their exclusive preview of SWAMP THING #2.

THE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR highlighted their favorite titles released over the past two weeks from DC Comics-The New 52, which they dubbed an “impressive array of books.” Among their picks were BATMAN AND ROBIN, BATWOMAN, FRANKENSTEIN, AGENT OF S.H.A.D.E., GREEN LANTERN, SUPERBOY, BATMAN, CATWOMAN, GREEN LANTERN CORPS and WONDER WOMAN.

SCRIPPS HOWARD NEWS SERVICE interviewed DC Editor-in-Chief Bob Harras about DC Comics-The New 52. "I think the (52) first issues really are setting the groundwork, but we're building from there with every issue," Harras told them. "The goal is definitely to keep readers excited and really kind of getting back to that sense of 'What's gonna happen next?' ... We're really just building the base of excitement."

FORBES covered the impact of DC Comics-The New 52 thus far. “To quote one comic store owner, ‘The New 52 is the biggest game changer in comic books we’ve seen in 30 years,’” the piece read. “The anticipation of the new releases every week has been nothing short of mind-blowing. Comic shops can’t keep the titles in stock. Some are selling out within hours of being put on the shelf, if they even make it to the shelf.”

IGN continued their series of interviews with all of the creative teams behind DC Comics-The New 52. Check out what Geoff Johns (JUSTICE LEAGUE), Tony Bedard (BLUE BEETLE), Judd Winick (CATWOMAN), Peter Tomasi (GREEN LANTERN CORPS), and Eric Wallace (MISTER TERRIFIC) had to say about their respective series. “There's a reason these characters stick together,” Johns teased. “You'll see new villains. You'll find out why Aquaman and Green Arrow hate each other. It's actually a pretty good story behind that, and that will come to light. You'll see the never ending problems that exist on the team because of Batman and Green Lantern. You'll see why Wonder Woman is the best fighter among the team. You'll learn why Superman keeps his distance from everybody else. There's a really cool arc where Superman and his role on this team is a little bit different than before. I think that's on purpose; he's a little bit disconnected from them. You'll see why Flash refuses to call himself a vigilante.”

(Everybody’s Talkin’ About) DC Comics-The New 52, Tuesday Morning (ET) Edition

As we prepare for another 12 titles from DC Comics-The New 52 to be published tomorrow, coverage and buzz continues to roll in. Here are some of the highlights.

AIN’T IT COOL NEWS caught up with Geoff Johns to discuss JUSTICE LEAGUE, AQUAMAN, GREEN LANTERN and DC Comics-The New 52 as a whole. “My big story-line for my first year of AQUAMAN is him on a quest to find out who sank Atlantis,” Johns revealed. “Because it wasn't an accident.”

USA TODAY ran an exclusive preview of SUPERGIRL #1 and interviewed series co-writer Mike Johnson. "We're really excited about the opportunity to hand this book to a female reader who is into things like The Hunger Games. This is a strong character with her own point of view," Johnson told them of Kara.

MTV GEEK spoke with Jeff Lemire about FRANKENSTEIN, AGENT OF S.H.A.D.E. “He is absolutely humorless, which in turn leads to a lot of humor down the line,” Lemire said about the series’ protagonist. “But he is a noble soldier, an unstoppable killing machine with the heart of a poet and the manners of a Victorian gentleman.”

IGN continued their series of interviews with all of the creative teams behind DC Comics-The New 52. Check out what Nathan Edmondson (GRIFTER), Adam Glass (SUICIDE SQUAD), Peter Milligan (RED LANTERNS), Fabian Nicieza and Pete Woods (LEGION LOST) and Peter Tomasi (BATMAN AND ROBIN) had to say about their respective series. “Their relationship is a father and son at odds right from the start,” Tomasi said to IGN of Bruce and Damian Wayne in BATMAN AND ROBIN. “Bruce struggles to get a handle on Damian and his past, trying to his best to teach his son what it means to be a just and moral person but making plenty of mistakes along the way. Damian wants to be accepted for who and what he is, but his past and present are locked in a constant battle that threatens to take a terrible toll.”

NEWSARAMA has the exclusive preview of LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #1 by Paul Levitz and Francis Portela. The issue goes on sale tomorrow.

Inside the numbers: JUSTICE LEAGUE # 1 is officially the best-selling comic book of 2011

(The cover to JUSTICE LEAGUE #4 by Jim Lee and Scott Williams)

Earlier today, Diamond Comic Distributors, the world's largest distributor of comics, graphic novels, and pop culture merchandise, officially announced that JUSTICE LEAGUE issue 1, written by Geoff Johns and drawn by Jim Lee and Scott Williams, is the bestselling comic book for the month of August—and to date, all of 2011.

That's the headline—and it's a good one—but, for those interested, here's a further look inside the numbers for DC COMICS-THE NEW 52:

· With a first printing exceeding 200,000 copies, JUSTICE LEAGUE #1 was the highest first printing of any DC Comics' title since 2006's JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA # 1 by NEW YORK TIMES bestselling writer Brad Meltzer, Ed Benes and Sandra Hope.

· The 200,000 first printing figure includes the digital combo pack and all variant editions, but not digital sales. The first printing was sold out at Diamond within hours of going on sale. The second printing of JUSTICE LEAGUE also sold out in less than 24 hours and the issue is now in its third printing.

· The DC Comics App peaked at # 4 on iTunes for Top Grossing I-Pad Apps. during the first week of The New 52.

· JUSTICE LEAGUE is one of ten titles so far from DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 with print runs of more than 100,000 (ACTION COMICS, BATGIRL, BATMAN, BATMAN AND ROBIN, BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT, DETECTIVE COMICS, FLASH, GREEN LANTERN, SUPERMAN).

· All 13 of the Week 2 titles from DC Comics: The New 52 have sold out from Diamond and are going back to press—ACTION COMICS, ANIMAL MAN, BATGIRL, BATWING, DETECTIVE COMICS, GREEN ARROW, HAWK & DOVE, JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL, MEN OF WAR, OMAC, STATIC SHOCK, STORMWATCH and SWAMP THING.

· With its second printing, ACTION COMICS, joins JUSTICE LEAGUE as the second title to date from DC Comics-The New 52 with more than 200,000 copies in print.

· All 13 of the Week 3 titles from DC Comics: The New 52 have sold out from Diamond in advance of publication and are going back to press, including BATMAN AND ROBIN, BATWOMAN, DEATHSTROKE, DEMON KNIGHTS, FRANKENSTEIN, AGENT OF S.H.A.D.E., GREEN LANTERN, GRIFTER, LEGION LOST, MISTER TERRIFIC, RED LANTERNS, RESURRECTION MAN, SUICIDE SQUAD and SUPERBOY.

(Everybody’s Talkin’ About) DC Comics-The New 52, Tuesday Afternoon (ET) Edition

The Labor Day weekend didn’t slow down the publicity wave for DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, including high profile exclusive previews:

USA TODAY has the exclusive first look at DETECTIVE COMICS #1 and an interview with writer/artist Tony S. Daniel who told the paper that “fresh, brand-new villains are the ones who will give Batman challenges he's never faced before.”

AIN’T IT COOL NEWS caught up with STORMWATCH writer Paul Cornell and featured a preview of the series’ first issue. Cornell offered a tease of what to expect from the series and hinted at the specific roles of the team’s members. “Sometimes he finds it best to be a hero, working with the Justice League,” he said of Martian Manhunter. “Sometimes he finds it best to be a warrior, working undercover with Stormwatch. There he can indulge his terrifying side.”

The recently launched CHAMPION! has the first look at BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT issue #1. “I thought there’s no better way to bring something grand scale to Batman than having a mass-level breakout at Arkham Asklym, everybody from high-level important villains to low-level guys that nobody has heard of,” said series writer and artist David Finch. “By the end of the issue, they’re swarming over Gotham City, and it hast to be dealt with, not just by Batman but by a lot of characters.”

CBR had the very first look at JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL issue #1.

IO9 previewed O.M.A.C. #1 and spoke with series writer Dan DiDio, who teased an upcoming crossover with O.M.A.C. and FRANKENSTEIN, AGENT OF S.H.A.D.E. “I've always been attracted to the eclectic parts of the DC Universe and so has Frankenstein writer Jeff Lemire, so it feels like a natural fit,” said DiDio. “So much of my story is built on the war of Brother Eye and O.M.A.C. versus Checkmate, and S.H.A.D.E. gets brought into the middle of it.”

THE LOS ANGELES TIMES’ Hero Complex debuted the first five pages of GREEN ARROW #1, written by L.A. based J.T. Krul. (The piece also included coverage of last week’s midnight event at comic book shop House of Secrets in Burbank for the official launch of DC Comics-The New 52.)

Meanwhile, SALON.COM interviewed DC Entertainment Co-Publisher and JUSTICE LEAGUE artist Jim Lee about DC Comics-The New 52 and JUSTICE LEAGUE #1.

Each week, IGN will be conducting interviews with the DC Comics-The New 52 creative teams. So far, they’ve posted interviews with DETECTIVE COMICS writer/co-artist Tony Daniel and with JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL creative team Dan Jurgens and Aaron Lopresti. “We want to construct fun, entertaining stories that capitalize on bigger-than-life events with a strong mix of characters,” Jurgens said.
