With “The Night of the Owls” crossover coming to Gotham City this May, COMIC BOOK RESOURCES ran a complete week of coverage examining the event. While CBR often spotlights their Batman coverage under the “Bat Signal” header, they even retitled the column in honor of the event.
Lucien Gates is learning the hard way that being a superhero is not all it’s cracked up to be. In the penultimate issue of THE RAY, Lucien must save the life of his girlfriend, Chianti. But just when he thinks he’s saved the day, Lucien meets an enigmatic stranger who wants to cast him as the lead in his new superhero movie. The twist? This man has powers of his own. Powers so intense that they allow him to turn anything he imagines into reality. And he’s not afraid to use them against The Ray and his loved ones if Lucien refuses to take him up on his offer.
With the highly anticipated “Night of the Owls” crossover beginning this May, we asked writers Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti how it impacts their story in ALL-STAR WESTERN. ““Plans within plans.” That’s one of my favorite lines from Frank Herbert’s eco-sci-fi epic, Dune. It is also one of the hardest things to convey in a monthly comic where readers are often second-guessing the outcome or direction of a series. There is always a larger plan at work and things are never quite what they seem,” says Gray. “Both Batman and Jonah Hex have been discovering this fact in their own unique ways.
We recently announced DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 “Second Wave,” which will launch GI COMBAT. This new series will feature rotating back up stories. First up is UNKNOWN SOLDIER by the writing team that brings you ALL-STAR WESTERN, Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti, with art by Dan Panosian.
We caught up with Justin and Jimmy to ask them about their story and here’s what they had to say:
Lucien Gates has no idea why he was chosen to be given the superhero powers that make him known as The Ray. But when San Diego falls under attack by an army of giant man-eating monsters, his purpose becomes clear when he must save both his hometown and the woman he loves before it’s too late.

In a four-issue miniseries coming in December, Lucien Gates is transformed into a human ray of light by a mysterious beam of energy, and he takes on the identity of The Ray – much to the chagrin of his girlfriend.
