MAD #521 Hits Stands Today!

It’s the day none of you have been waiting for – the latest issue of MAD is available on stands!

Available today, MAD #521 featuring a satire of Game of Thrones. According to MAD editor John Ficarra, the satire’s release was deliberately timed to coincide with the HBO’s series new season. “The fact that the satire will probably ruin the viewing experience of the hit show for many people is unfortunate but unavoidable,” said Ficarra. Head on over to ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY and YAHOO! TV to check out their exclusive coverage of this parody.

Also in the issue is the long-awaited third installment to “The MAD Guide to Man Boobs.” Written by Ryan Pagelow and illustrated by Drew Friedman, among the new man boobs highlighted are “Hammerheads,” “Belt Sniffers” and “Gorillas in the Mist.”  The magazine respectfully requests that you refrain from sending in photos of yourself or a loved one regarding this article. Check out MAXIM for an exclusive preview of this latest installment of the magazine favorite.

An Updated Experience...

A year ago, we launched new websites for DC Comics, Vertigo and MAD Magazine. Since then, you’ve been sharing your thoughts and opinions with us by leaving comments on the three sites, reaching out to us through our contact form, speaking to us at conventions, sending us smoke signals and carrier pigeons… Pretty much any way possible. Most of what we’ve been hearing is great, but we’ve realized for a while that there’s room for improvement, and you can look for the first round of those improvements today.

The first thing you’ll notice is our updated navigation. We’ve reordered the links based on your feedback and have made some changes to our blog that should help you find what you’re looking for much more efficiently.

Starting today, the “Blog” tab which used to be a part of our navigation bar is now a “News” tab that will serve as the home for all of our posts. If you’re looking for 5.2 Reasons, DC Week-In-Review, Preview Monday or other features that are more editorial in nature, you can find them under “For Fans.” If you’re interested in breaking news, announcements, press releases and articles that are largely informational, look for them under “For Press.” And if you’re seeking out fun DC Comics-themed features aimed at parents and families, you’ll find them in our newest section, “For Family,” which is the home of our brand new DC Comics Fan Family blog.

We invite and encourage you to explore and familiarize yourself with these new enhancements, but please bear with us if you find any bugs or anything that doesn’t seem to be working correctly. We’re working to perfect and continually improve your experience, but we ask you to “pardon our dust” over the next few weeks as we get all of these enhancements fully in place.

Explore and enjoy. We look forward to hearing what you think, and remember…this is just the beginning.

MAD #520 is on Stands Today!

The Usual Gang of Idiots is at it again!

Today, MAD MAGAZINE’s first issue of 2013 hit stands. As MTV GEEK revealed a few weeks ago, the issue focuses on the “50 Worst Things About Cartoons” and features a cover that spoofs Cartoon Network’s popular show, Adventure Time – with MAD’s poster boy Alfred E. Neuman taking on the role of Finn.

“MAD has never shied away from the weighty and controversial issues of the day – and if that means going after Jake and the Never Land Pirates, Family Guy and Phineas and Ferb – then so be it!” stated MAD editor John Ficarra. “Whether you love cartoons or hate them, you can’t afford to miss our ‘50 Worst Things About Cartoons’ issue (and with the current economy, we really can’t afford for you to miss it either).”

To check out various exclusive previews of MAD #520, head on over to THE HUFFINGTON POST (featuring exclusive commentary from Ficarra), BOING BOING, WIRED’s GEEK DAD, POPMATTERS, PASTE MAGAZINE, CRAVE ONLINE, COMIC VINE, NEWSARAMA, TOPLESS ROBOT, TOON ZONE, SPORTS WORLD REPORT, and MANIA.

WEEKEND TODAY Goes Behind The Scenes of MAD MAGAZINE

Last month, MAD MAGAZINE released its “20 Dumbest People, Events and Things of 2012” issue. On shelves now, the eagerly anticipated annual issue poked fun at all sorts of headline-grabbers, ranging from Lance Armstrong to Kristen Stewart to Mitt Romney and Barack Obama (for more about the issue and sneak peeks inside of it, click here).

And if you’re itching for more MAD, you’re in luck! This past weekend, THE TODAY SHOW celebrated sixty years of MAD MAGAZINE. Taking a guided tour of MAD’s official headquarters (also referred to as our New York offices), NBC anchor Jenna Wolfe chatted with MAD Editor John Ficarra, Art Director Sam Viviano, and longtime MAD contributor Al Jaffee.

“Each artist – and each writer for that matter – they have a language of their own,” Jaffee told Wolfe. And as for how he’s been coming up with those hilarious fold-ins at the end of each issue for decades? “It’s just what pours out of my twisted mind,” the legendary artist confessed.

Head on over to THE TODAY SHOW’s website to watch the full segment, including a surprise presentation of the below custom-made “Special WEEKEND TODAY Issue” cover to a pleasantly shocked Wolfe.

TOTALLY MAD Tops the New York Times Hardcover Graphic Books Best Seller List!

To celebrate MAD MAGAZINE’s 60th anniversary, Time Home Entertainment Inc. foolishly teamed up with MAD MAGAZINE on TOTALLY MAD: 60 YEARS OF HUMOR, SATIRE, STUPIDITY AND STUPIDITY, a new collection of the legendary humor magazine’s high-quality idiocy.

This afternoon, THE NEW YORK TIMES posted their weekly Best Seller lists and for some unexplainable reason, TOTALLY MAD debuted at #1 on their Hardcover Graphic Book list.

Speaking from MAD offices in New York, MAD Editor John Ficarra said, “If I knew the book was going to be this successful, I would have put a lot more effort into it. Oh well, too late now.”

Organized by decade, this oversized 256-page book features some of the world’s best comedy writers, cartoonists and humorous illustrators – “The Usual Gang of Idiots” – as they have long called themselves. In addition, the book includes numbered pages for maximum reader convenience.

TOTALLY MAD features a special foreword by long-time MAD fans Stephen Colbert and Eric Drysdale, plus five exclusive essays about MAD’s cultural impact, the origin of Alfred E. Neuman and the magazine’s history, including its landmark Supreme Court win against Irving Berlin, establishing the right to publish satirical lyrics.

As a bonus, the book features a removable set of 12 classic front covers, dubbed The Soul of MAD” by MAD Founder and Publisher William M. Gaines. Each print was selected for its uniqueness, artistic achievement and classic timelessness, and is suitable for framing or wrapping fish. Click here to purchase TOTALLY MAD. No exceptions will be tolerated!

And check out THE NEW YORK TIMES’ full Hardcover Graphic Book Best Seller List, which also includes GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS, VOL. 1, and the Paperback Graphic Book Best Seller List, which features NIGHTWING, VOL. 1: TRAPS AND TRAPEZES. Congratulations to all!

CNET and NEWSARAMA talk the new MAD Magazine iPad app

Earlier today, DC Entertainment announced the launch of a new MAD Magazine iPad app. The app will be available for download beginning this Sunday, which also happens to be April Fool’s Day … as well as the birthday of MAD’s infamous mascot, Alfred E. Neuman.

“A lot of people have said over the years they wouldn't be caught dead with a copy of MAD," MAD Editor John Ficarra told NEWSARAMA. "So we figure this is a way that they can have a copy of MAD, without having to hold copy in their hands."

To read more about the new MAD app, check out CNET and NEWSARAMA’s coverage. And this Sunday, don’t be the last fool who hasn’t downloaded the new MAD app.

IT’S NO JOKE: MAD MAGAZINE iPAD APP TO BE RELEASED ON APRIL FOOL’S DAY (ALFRED E. NEUMAN’S BIRTHDAY)

New MAD app will include exclusive content,

interactive stories, MAD videos and access to MAD library

BURBANK, CA, March 30, 2012 – DC Entertainment today announced plans to release a new MAD Magazine iPad app complete with interactive features and exclusive content. The app will be released on April Fool’s Day, an appropriate date since it’s also the birthday of MAD’s infamous mascot, Alfred E. Neuman. The app will be free to download through the App Store and will include a mixture of free and paid content, including a free preview of the magazine.

“We’re delighted to bring MAD to the iPad,” said MAD Editor John Ficarra. “We think the MAD app may be just the thing to turn the struggling iPad around and make it successful –though most experts think it may be just the thing that kills it altogether.”

The MAD app will include interactive versions of all current issues, access to a library of back issues and books, animated covers and “fold-in” pages, promo videos from the hit Cartoon Network show, MAD, and a link to MAD’s popular blog The Idiotical. In addition to the regular issue interactive “fold-in,” digital issues will also include a second, classic interactive “fold-in” from a past issue. Fans of Sergio Aragones’ MAD Marginals will enjoy a feature that allows readers to “pop-up” the margin artwork for a larger, more detailed view.

While the app will mirror all editorial components in print issues, many digital versions will include interactive elements. For example, the digital version of the current issue’s “MAD’s Make Your Own Twilight Movie” lets readers create multiple storylines and highlights their choices as they make them for a ridiculous visual punch line.

“With this app we’ve taken everything that MAD readers like in the print magazine, and added entertaining digital design and fun interactivity,” stated Hank Kanalz, senior vice president of digital, DC Entertainment. “The app also creates a one-stop destination for all things MAD, from TV to the magazine to the blog.”

After downloading the free app, readers can purchase new digital issues of MAD Magazine for $4.99, or back issues for $1.99. Digital readers can also choose a per issue digital subscription for $1.99 per issue, or pay an upfront annual fee of $9.99. Current print subscribers will receive a free digital subscription. All future print issues of the magazine will be available for purchase day-and-date within the app.

The MAD Magazine app was developed by 1K Studios, a Cinram Digital Media company, that develops and markets popular entertainment, media, software and consumer electronic products.

Get Your Photo Taken at the DC Entertainment Booth at WonderCon

Earlier today, we shared with you our panel schedule for WonderCon.

This morning, we’ve got more exciting things to share with you lucky people who will be attending WonderCon this weekend. At the DC Entertainment booth, we’ll have three different green screen backgrounds for you to take your picture in front of. For the first time, you’ll be able to have your photo taken with Alfred E. Neuman. You’ll also get a chance to have a picture of you snapped in front of the artwork of industry legend Jim Lee, DC Entertainment Co-Publisher and the artist of the bestselling JUSTICE LEAGUE. But that’s not all!

The first green screen background for you to take a picture in front of will be a mural of JUSTICE LEAGUE characters by some of your favorite artists from DC COMICS-THE NEW 52. Stand front and center with:

  • Aquaman (illustrated by Ardian Syaf)
  • Batman (illustrated by Andy Kubert)
  • Cyborg (illustrated by Gene Ha)
  • The Flash (illustrated by Francis Manapul)
  • Green Lantern (illustrated by Ivan Reis)
  • Superman (illustrated by Jim Lee)
  • Wonder Woman (illustrated by Adam Hughes)

The second green screen background to take your photo with is the image you’ve seen associated with the We Can Be Heroes campaign. Stand out in the Justice League against a silhouetted roster of the world’s greatest superheroes, as drawn by Jim Lee.

And if you’ve ever wanted to have your picture taken with MAD’s Alfred E. Neuman, now you finally have that chance. In the third green screen background, Alfred will be wearing his classic “I’m With Stupid” t-shirt and point to you! Don’t miss out on this opportunity to join the Usual Gang of Idiots over at MAD Magazine.

As always, you will be given physical print-outs of the photo as well as a unique digital redemption code so you can share the photos with family and friends and post them to Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram, Pinterest and wherever else you desire.

Check out this gallery to take a peak at what the screens will look like and see you behind the cameras at booth #501 this weekend!
