This Just Happened: Geoff Johns Bids Farewell to GREEN LANTERN

SPOILER ALERT: If you have not read GREEN LANTERN #20 yet and do not wish to know what happens, stop reading this post now (major spoilers ahead!).

GREEN LANTERN #20 hit stores this past week, and not only does this oversized issue contain the epic final chapter of the “Wrath of the First Lantern” saga, but it also marks the end of legendary scribe Geoff Johns’ time writing the series. Spanning more than 100 story issues over almost ten years, Johns has breathed new life into one of DC’s most iconic characters and truly created a universe truly worthy of Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps.

“The most emotional process was writing it, especially the last ten pages,” Johns recently told PASTE MAGAZINE. “The last ten pages are absolutely beautiful. I have the book in my hands now. It turned out really nicely and there’s some nice stuff in it looking back at Green Lantern, which is cool. It feels good though. I’m proud of the final issue. I’m proud of the work we did and I’m excited for what we did to be built on by the next crew. Just like we came in and built off a foundation, I think the next crew will too.”

Green Lantern vs … The Justice League?!

The “Rise of the Third Army” continues!

After Hal Jordan goes missing, many questions will be left hanging. Particularly for the Justice League, as they decide to go after the new Green Lantern to demand answers about their absent team member. Flying into stores on November 7th, GREEN LANTERN #14 comes to you from the acclaimed creative team of writer Geoff Johns and artists Doug Mahnke and Christian Alamy.

“We’re going to be meeting a brand new Green Lantern in issue #0, and unlike his predecessors, he’s not the sort of guy you’d be expecting to wear the ring. That’s putting it mildly,” teased series editor Matt Idelson. “After the events of GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #1, Hal Jordan is MIA in a very big way, and our new Green Lantern finds himself in a new role, though his troubled life isn’t going to go away in the slightest. In fact it’s the things he’s notorious for that in large part bring the Justice League into the picture—they want to know what’s happened to Hal, and what this guy thinks he’s doing filling the role of Green Lantern. It’s going to be intense, but also very, very cool.”

Announcing the Guest Creative Team for NIGHTWING #13-14

This fall, NIGHTWING’s Dick Grayson will battle against the villainous Lady Shiva. In issue #13, find out why one of the world’s most grave assassins returned to Gotham City. And in issue #14, watch the epic martial arts throwdown between the two. And even if Nightwing may be outmatched this time, he won’t go down without a fight!

Taking over as guest writer for NIGHTWING #13-14 is Tom DeFalco, the fan-favorite writer behind such titles as LEGION LOST, SUPERBOY and NIGHTWING #0. And joining him to take on artist duties are Andres Guinaldo and Mark Irwin.

“When writer Kyle Higgins needed a breather to gear up for the Joker’s monstrous return in issue #15, I turned to Tom, who pitched in on issue #0,” series editor Brian Cunningham told THE SOURCE. “I’ll just come out and say it: Tom ranks among the best ever at writing street-level heroes. And Tom really delivered with his first solo trip to Gotham, following the narrative that Kyle has developed without skipping a beat, and helping to set up the Joker arc. And it felt natural for Tom to continue exploring the character of Lady Shiva, who first appears in NIGHTWING #0."

"In this story, both Dick and Shiva have grown up some since their first encounter—they’re not teenagers anymore—so it’ll be fun to see how each fares in a fair fight. Wait, did I say fair fight? Forget it—Shiva remains by far the better fighter, so it’s up to Dick to find a way just stay alive!"

"On the art side, Andres Guinaldo is an on-the-rise artist to be reckoned with, and you can quote me. He’s extremely talented and has an idiosyncratic style that’s also perfectly suited for mainstream comics. Keep your eye on this guy—he will only get better. You’ll see what he’s capable of in these two issues, especially after Mark masterfully inks him.”
