Introducing The First Lantern

On September 5th, the release of GREEN LANTERN #0 will introduce a brand new Green Lantern to the DC Universe. Then starting in October, the monumental crossover event, “Rise of The Third Army,” will span the pages of GREEN LANTERN, GREEN LANTERN CORPS, GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS, and RED LANTERNS. To help you prepare for these exciting adventures, we’ve been putting a spotlight on the Green Lantern universe and the upcoming events that will change it forever each day this week on THE SOURCE.

This past Wednesday marked the release of GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #1, written by Geoff Johns and illustrated by Ethan Van Sciver with a disturbing epilogue by Johns and artists Pete Woods and Cam Smith. If you haven’t read the issue, the stop reading this post now (spoiler alert ahead)!

If you’ve already read the issue, you witnessed the introduction of the First Lantern. But who is this mysterious character? Why is he being introduced now? And what does he have to do with the “Rise of the Third Army”?

“Who the First Lantern is and what his role will be in the upcoming Green Lantern universe will come into play very, very quickly,” hinted GREEN LANTERN writer Geoff Johns. “The being inside has been imprisoned there for a long, long time. The Guardians consider him their greatest threat, but also their greatest source of power. Whether he's friend or foe will be up for debate, but regardless he is one of the potentially most dangerous beings in existence.”

“In GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #1, readers got their first glimpse at the First Lantern, someone who’s been locked away for a very long time—for a VERY good reason!” teased editor Matt Idelson. “His presence in this story is the catalyst for something very bad, and yet his story is only going to grow from here.”

Stay tuned to THE SOURCE as more about the First Lantern is revealed in the coming months. In the meantime, check out the below page from GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #1 to get a peek at this esoteric character who will gravely impact the Green Lantern universe this fall.

The First Two Armies: The Manhunters and The Green Lantern Corps

On September 5th, the release of GREEN LANTERN #0 will introduce a brand new Green Lantern to the DC Universe. Then starting in October, the monumental crossover event, “Rise of The Third Army,” will span the pages of GREEN LANTERN, GREEN LANTERN CORPS, GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS, and RED LANTERNS. To help you prepare for these exciting adventures, we’ll be putting a spotlight on the Green Lantern universe and the upcoming events that will change it forever each day this week on THE SOURCE.

Tomorrow, GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #1 hits stores. Written by Geoff Johns and illustrated by Ethan Van Sciver, this special oversized issue serves as a prelude to “Rise of the Third Army.” To help hold you over for one more day, we asked the Green Lantern group editors to tell us a little bit about the identities of thes first two armies: the Manhunters and the Green Lantern Corps.

“To combat the threat of the Third Army, Atrocitus needs to muster special soldiers of his own: the mechanical monstrosities known as the Manhunters,” explained Pat McCallum. “Originally created by the Guardians of Oa, what would drive Atrocitus to side with the same synthetic creatures that slaughtered his homeworld? And why would he need them if he already has his the ferocious Red Lantern Corps at his disposal? The stage is set in RED LANTERNS #13 when Atrocitus, Bleez and Rankorr go toe-to-toe with the Third Army, and then disturbing secrets will be laid bare in issue #14! And what happens when a Manhunter android is brought back on line not powered by Guardian science, but by the unpredictable raw power of Blood Magic?!? RED LANTERNS, the front line in the war against the Third Army!”

“The Green Lantern Corps has seen better days,” teased Matt Idelson. “John Stewart and Guy Gardner just witnessed the destruction of the Alpha Lanterns. Hal Jordan was kicked out of the Corps and replaced by Sinestro (who has since secretly given Hal a ring without the Guardians' knowledge). Kyle Rayner has his hands full trying to unite a disparate group composed of members of the other Lantern colors. There is no unity, there is no trust. It's almost like it's the last days of the Green Lantern Corps ... but if that's true, then what comes NEXT?”

“The Rise of the Third Army is actually the backdrop to what is ultimately some very personal stories with our Lanterns - Hal Jordan & Sinestro, Guy Gardner, Kyle Rayner and the New Guardians, John Stewart, Mogo and ultimately the new Green Lantern that will be introduced in GREEN LANTERN #0,” added GREEN LANTERN writer Geoff Johns. “It's an examination of all of these heroes, a reminder to them and us why they were chosen - they are the light, the hope and the heroism that the universe needs. They think and act with their hearts and they will be the ones who usher in a new era for the Green Lantern Corps.”

Editors Matt Idelson and Pat McCallum Discuss the Green Lantern universe

On September 5th, the release of GREEN LANTERN #0 will introduce a brand new Green Lantern to the DC Universe. Then starting in October, the monumental crossover event, “Rise of The Third Army,” will span the pages of GREEN LANTERN, GREEN LANTERN CORPS, GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS, and RED LANTERNS. To help you prepare for these exciting adventures, we’ll be putting a spotlight on the Green Lantern universe and the upcoming events that will change it forever each day this week on THE SOURCE.

To kick us off, editors Matt Idelson and Pat McCallum break down the Green Lantern universe and explain some of the fundamentals of what you need to know before picking up GREEN LANTERN #0 and the “Rise of the Third Army” titles. Take it away, fellas!

How many color Corps are there? What are they?

MATT: There’s the Green Lantern Corps, of course. And the Red Lanterns, the Star Sapphires, Sinestro’s erstwhile Yellow Corps, the Indigo Tribe, the Blue Lanterns and the one-man-Corps that is Larfleeze the Orange Lantern. There’s also the Black Lanterns, who are foul, undead creatures that plague ALL the other Corps. And then there’s also the White Lantern, who is the embodiment of life.

PAT: Each Corps has a unique color and mission: green (the most famous), as well as yellow, blue, violet (but everyone calls them “pink”), indigo, orange, red and...uh...no, that’s it. Seven total, a rainbow of fruit flavors.

What unique qualities distinguish the colors from one another?

MATT: The different colors represent the different emotions in the color spectrum. As everyone knows, green represents willpower. Red is for rage, yellow for fear, violet is love, orange is greed, blue is hope and indigo is compassion.

PAT: Green represents willpower, which readers will have to exert in order make it through my answers during this interview. Yellow is easy to remember: “Yer YELLA!” Yellow = fear. Red’s another easy one: “I’m seeing RED!” Red = rage. Blue is hope, orange is greed, violet is love and Indigo sounds like “Inigo,” the best character from The Princess Bride. Also, indigo = compassion.

How many Earth-born Green Lanterns are there? Who are they?

MATT: We’ve currently got four Earth-born Lanterns: Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Kyle Rayner and Guy Gardner. But we’re about to introduce a fifth human in GREEN LANTERN #0, and believe me, he’s nothing like any Green Lantern you’ve met before.

PAT: Yeah, the new fella showing up in GREEN LANTERN #0 is going to be the straw that stirs the drink! On the Red Lantern front, we have two earthlings that wear the red ring. Jack Moore, now known as “Rankorr,” and the house cat-turned-most-dangerous-pussycat-in-the-Galaxy, the frothing feline fury men call Dex-Starr! A fan-favorite, he wears his ring on his tail.

How many Lanterns are there altogether? What sectors are represented?

MATT: There are roughly 7,200 Green Lanterns who patrol 3,600 sectors, but if you’re asking how many Lanterns in every Corps combined...? Wow. A lot. Thousands. While not every Corps is represented in every sector, there are ring bearers of one spectrum or another scattered all across the universe.

PAT: Ah, the joy of counting all those little Green Lanterns in those giant group shots. Then combine that number with ALL the other Corps...? That’s nuts! There’s a lot of these ring slingers out in space, and the area they cover is spreading. The Red Lanterns seek to bring their rage-fueled justice to the darkest corners of the universe, while the same can be said for the Blue Lantern’s mission of hope, the Star Sapphire’s mission of love, etc.

How does someone get chosen to be a Green Lantern?

MATT: When a Green Lantern is killed, his or her ring seeks out the one person in that sector worthy of taking on the responsibility of being a Green Lantern.

PAT: While there are a lot of Green Lanterns out there, comparatively speaking there AREN’T a lot of them when you factor in the size of the universe. Only those rare few with iron will, the ability to overcome fear, those who have what it takes to fight through any obstacle -- those are the ones chosen to be a soldiers in the Green Lantern Corps. Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, John Stewart...those are some tough dudes who don’t know the meaning of the word quit!

How does this ring decide who gets chosen?

MATT: The ring bases its selection first on willpower, but it seems to also hunt for a specific personality profile as well, of the prior wearer. If Hal Jordan were to fall in battle, his ring would seek out someone like Hal, where as if Sinestro were to buy a one-way ticket to the afterlife, his ring would seek out someone very different from the person Hal’s ring would choose.

PAT: While the rings all seek out those with willpower, each ring seems to lean toward someone with similar traits of the last one who wore it. If Guy Gardner died, the next person the ring sought out would be someone with willpower AND those Guy Gardner-ish sensibilities.

What happens if the ring runs out of power?

MATT: Like an electronic device, it goes dead until recharged. So if you’re flying through space and you forgot to charge up before leaving the house, or you’ve expended all your energy fighting, you’re in a lot of trouble. Unless of course you’ve brought your Lantern Battery along to recharge from.

PAT: POOF! You’re naked. No, seriously, Green Lantern uniforms are energy constructs, so never forget your underwear when you’re a Green Lantern. The Green Lantern power ring may be the most powerful weapon in the universe, but if it runs out of juice, all it is a pretty piece of jewelry. That’s why Green Lanterns need to keep their power batteries someplace safe AND handy. A quick recharge from a Power Battery and Green Lanterns are up, running and, perhaps most importantly, wearing pants.

Who are The Guardians?

MATT: The Guardians of the Universe are an ancient race of aliens who took it upon themselves to bring peace & order to the universe. An early attempt at building a peacekeeping force, the robotic Manhunters, went murderously, monstrously wrong. Their more recent experiment is the Green Lantern Corps, a “space police” type organization designed to patrol the universe. The very first example the Guardians tried in this type of experiment was the mysterious First Lantern, who we see a glimpse of in GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #1 … and who may very well have a larger role to play in the coming saga.

PAT: The Guardians of the Universe, the little blue aliens who inhabit the planet Oa, were once a great force for good, using their advanced tech and staggering powers to try and bring peace to the universe. But their thoughts and beliefs have grown darker, souring over centuries of watching chaos rule. The Guardians still want to deliver order and peace, but their methods have changed and their goals have become corrupted. Once the shining light of the universe, the Guardians have succumbed to a darkness that threatens to extinguish not just will, but all emotions: fear, love, rage, greed, hope, and compassion. All the fragile expressions of free will rest in the hands of the Guardians ... and the Guardians are clenching their fists.

Paperback Spotlight – SWAMP THING VOL. 1: RAISE THEM BONES

It’s hard to believe that we’re already almost one full year into DC COMICS-THE NEW 52. To celebrate this monumental anniversary, each day this week on THE SOURCE we’ll be spotlighting a different paperback collected edition being released this month. With the launch storylines of these critically acclaimed series collected for the first time in their entirety, it’s a great way for new readers to join the growing DC Universe. Today, we shed a spotlight on SWAMP THING VOL. 1: RAISE THEM BONES.

“I couldn't be more excited about this release. SWAMP THING VOL. 1: RAISE THEM BONES is the first part of a story I've been dreaming about doing since I arrived at DC,” writer Scott Snyder told THE SOURCE. “The old Wrightson/Wein run I used to read over and over as a kid for its great gothic monster mashups and creepy storytelling. And then the Moore/Bissette run showed me how wickedly smart, frightening and inspiring a comic book could be. What I'm getting at is that Swamp Thing has long been one of my very favorite characters. And for me, doing this story meant trying do what so many great creators had done before us on the character - making something that was very much our own, something new, while still honoring the great Swamp Thing stories of the past. So this is our attempt to do that - in it, we give you a human Alec Holland, a man haunted by the knowledge that all his life, he's had a mysterious connection to the Green - the earth's plant life. A man who knows he is likely destined to become the monster known as Swamp Thing, the warrior and protector of the Green. What he doesn't know, though, is that he isn't just destined to be a Swamp Thing. He's destined to be the greatest protector the green has ever known - a warrior king Swamp Thing - a legend come to life, the savior of the Green in its time of greatest need.  And it does need Alec Holland, and need him desperately. Because in the American desert, a different kind of monster is rising, a lord of death and pestilence, a horror of storm, building a bone kingdom to spread across the world. That's my pitch. I hope you'll take a look. Yanick Paquette has done the work of his life on this book, and I couldn't be prouder of him, or it. And Marco Rudy and Victor Ibanez, Val Staples and Nathan Fairbairn all brought the world of Swamp Thing to life in wonderfully nightmarish ways. So come to the swamp. The Green is waiting.”

“Swamp Thing has played a major role in my love of the medium itself,” added artist Yanick Paquette. “My first real art crush was Bernie Wrightson who I discovered looking in a French, black and white copy of SWAMP THING #4 (the one with the werewolf). I hunted down Bernie's work frantically and my early drawings have his stamps all over it. But it's the Moore, Bissette, Totleben, Yate and Veitch run on SWAMP THING that really deeply changed my vision of what American comics could be. Their works not only defined the character but, for me at least, became a fictional genre of its very own: poetic horror, terror and beauty told by daringly exploring the medium emotive possibilities.”

“When my turn came to contribute to SWAMP THING, it was that rich, intimate legacy that came to mind. It's not just drawing a character. That book is a genre of its own. And as I ventured in the swamp and built my corner, I’ve felt like openly acknowledging my forebears for who I’m so tributary.”

“I love this opening set of stories so much, both for its horror and its humanity,” concluded series editor Matt Idelson. “And while no one can replace Alec Holland as my favorite character of the piece (and rightly so), William is one terrifically twisted adversary!”

SWAMP THING VOL. 1: RAISE THEM BONES will be available in comic book stores on August 22 and in bookstores everywhere on August 28.

Announcing Marcus To and Ray McCarthy’s Guest Arc on THE FLASH

Earlier this week, we told you about THE FLASH ANNUAL #1 coming your way this summer. This morning, we’ve got some more exciting news for fans of the Scarlet Speedster. Joining the acclaimed creative team of THE FLASH for a special guest arc on issues #10 and #11 are BATWING artists Marcus To and Ray McCarthy.

“FLASH #10 spotlights the reimagined Weather Wizard and his twisted family tree, and we’re thrilled to welcome artist Marcus To and inker Ray McCarthy on board to tell the tale,” Editor Matt Idelson told THE SOURCE. “Marcus shares studio space with regular FLASH artist Francis Manapul (we’ve enjoyed hearing his snarky comments in the background of our calls with Francis), so we’re keeping things in the family, as it were... and as you can see from the double-page spread below, Marcus is gonna blow through this book like a hurricane! Issue #10 is going to be a blast, but just wait until July’s scorching issue #11, where — fittingly for the height of summer — you’ll be re-introduced to the very nasty, very crispy Heat Wave!

And while you’re impatiently drumming your fingers on your desk, waiting for these two issues (you are annoying everyone seated nearby, and you should really stop), why not check out the terrific work Marcus and Ray have been doing on BATWING recently?”

Following Marcus and Ray’s 2-issue arc, Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato will return as the regular art team of THE FLASH (beginning with issue #12). Below, take an exclusive first look at Marcus’ artwork for THE FLASH #10, which goes on sale June 27th.

Announcing GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #1

Every day this week, we’ve told you about a different special Annual issue you can look forward to this August. So why would today be any different?

GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #1 reunites the acclaimed creative team of writer Geoff Johns and artist Ethan Van Sciver, who have previously collaborated on such titles as GREEN LANTERN: REBIRTH, GREEN LANTERN: THE SINESTRO CORPS WAR and THE FLASH: REBIRTH.

"Working with Ethan means things change, things are revealed and new characters rise,” Geoff Johns revealed to THE SOURCE. “It's the madness of our collaborations that started all this and will continue it. The universe is a dangerous place. And it's about to get even more so..."

“GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #1 not only brings the Black Hand story to a truly unexpected close, but sets up the major events that will heavily impact the entire Green Lantern franchise in a truly devastating way,” continued editor Matt Idelson. “And there's no more appropriate pairing for this book than reuniting Geoff Johns with Ethan Van Sciver, given the Green Lantern history those two have under their belts.”

GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #1 will span across 48 pages. Look for the issue in stores on August 29th.

Announcing THE FLASH ANNUAL #1

Over the past two days, we’ve told you about the upcoming releases of DETECTIVE COMICS ANNUAL #1 and SUPERMAN ANNUAL #1. The fun doesn’t stop there because today, we’re here to tell you about another member of the Justice League getting his own Annual issue: The Flash.

“One by one, the Flash’s rogues have been returning to the pages of THE FLASH — along with some new faces, like the mysterious Turbine,” Editor Matt Idelson told THE SOURCE. “But surely everyone’s been waiting for the main event, and we’re thrilled to tell you it’s coming your way in THE FLASH ANNUAL! The reunited Rogues hate the Flash just as much as they always have (if not more) -- but this time, they’re gunning for Captain Cold, too! It’s all-out mayhem, everybody vs. everybody, with an even bigger and nastier threat preparing to swing into the fray at exactly the wrong time...

We couldn’t be more excited about this one, and we hope you will be too! It really is a story so big, it needed the giant size of an Annual to contain it... and we’re still kinda worried it might blow the cover off. So please use caution when purchasing.”

To see the exclusive reveal of the cover for THE FLASH ANNUAL #1 and to read more about this 48-page issue, check out NEWSARAMA’s interview with creative team Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato.

THE FLASH ANNUAL #1 arrives in stores on August 29th.

DC ALL ACCESS: Matt Idelson

When you’re smack dab in the middle of something, you sometimes don’t realize how special or meaningful it is. But hearing the growing anticipation from readers and freelancers alike and then seeing the huge success our first month of the New 52 was, I can’t help but step back and feel a certain level of awe at all that’s been accomplished. And we’re only getting started!

You’ve seen and heard plenty about some of the more familiar titles I work on, like ACTION COMICS, SUPERMAN and WONDER WOMAN, and truth be told, these aren’t books that need any help – they’ve turned out amazingly well (as I hope you know by now)! But working on the New 52 has given me the chance to diversify a little, and thanks to the well-deserved promotions of Chris Conroy and Wil Moss to Associate Editor, I’ve been able to give up SUPERBOY and SUPERGIRL and work on some more offbeat titles like I, VAMPIRE, SWAMP THING, and DEMON KNIGHTS. Since I’ve written about VAMPY (as we like to call it) recently on the DCU blog, and you’d have to be hiding under a rock not to have heard the buzz about SWAMPY (see a trend?), I wanted to wax a little bit about DEMON KNIGHTS (no clever title shortening here—any suggestions?)

Paul Cornell, the madman behind Lex Luthor’s “Black Ring” saga in ACTION COMICS, was invited write a new Demon series. Our only request: that it be set in the dark ages of the DCU. What Paul came back with was a whole team around the Demon, with Etrigan and his reluctant host Jason Blood in the unlikely role of leader. With two issues in your hands, I think you can see he’s not only brought a whole new take to the team dynamic, but he’s built a living, breathing world where events from the dark ages will/have/did have an important impact on the goings-on of today’s new DCU (unless you thought their cameo in STORMWATCH #1 was an oversight). Of course, all he’s written would be just words if not for Diogenes Neves, Oclair Albert and Marcelo Maiolo, who’ve brought this world to life in a way I didn’t dare to hope. I love this book, I hope you do, too.

-- Matt Idelson

Legendary artist Andy Kubert to join DC COMICS-THE NEW 52

Fresh off of his bestselling FLASHPOINT miniseries, industry legend Andy Kubert will be joining critically acclaimed writer Grant Morrison for a special, two-issue arc of ACTION COMICS in DC COMICS-THE NEW 52. Issues #5 and #6 will guest star the Legion of Super-Heroes, while also laying groundwork for things to come much, much later in Superman’s story. And keep an eye out for Krypto!

“When Editor Matt Idelson asked if I would be interested and/or able to fit into my schedule two upcoming issues of Action Comics with Grant, I couldn’t say no,” said Kubert. “I don’t know of any other artist that would have. Drawing the latest incarnation of Superman and working with one of the best writers on the planet made it a very easy decision for me. And in this story, I get to do some VERY iconic stuff! I gotta admit, I’m a little nervous... Fun Fact for those keeping score: I had never drawn Superman in a comics interior for an entire issue. I had done inking over Dan Jurgens and Jerry Ordway for an issue each over their beautiful pencils way (and I mean WAY) back when but this is my first opportunity to pencil the Man of Steel interior pages for my very own!”

After Kubert’s two-issue take on ACTION COMICS, Rags Morales will return as the series’ regular artist.

DC Comics All Access: Bob Harras

And so we come to Week Four–marking the end of September, the month that ushered in the debut of DC Comics-The New 52 and the unprecedented transformation of the entire DC Universe. It’s hard to believe we’re finally here because for us September started a long time ago. Let me explain:

It’s been quite a ride since the writers conference that initiated this evolution. It’s been a year of pitch meetings, story conferences and design sessions that often went far into the night. It’s been a year of hard work on everyone’s part and truth be told – it’s been a lot of fun.

One of my favorite aspects of this period was our weekly New 52 editorial meeting. Every Friday, all of us in DC Editorial—me, our Executive Editor Eddie Berganza, VP Art Direction & Design Mark Chiarello, Coordinating Editor Liz Gehrlein, Group Editors Matt Idelson and Mike Marts, Senior Editors Bobbie Chase and Joey Cavalieri, Editors Pat McCallum, Brian Cunningham and Rachel Gluckstern, Associate Editors Janelle Asselin, Harvey Richards, Rex Ogle, Wil Moss, Chris Conroy and Assistant Editors Sean Mackiewicz, Katie Kubert, Kate Stewart, Darren Shan and Rickey Purdin—would assemble in our conference room for a two-hour gathering (complete with pizza—any cholesterol concerns temporarily forgotten) not to discuss schedules, or production concerns (these we saved for other meetings)—but to share. Everyone came to that meeting with whatever new material had excited them: whether it was a new script, new art from one of the titles, new designs or new logo concepts. It allowed everybody to see what was being used to build The New 52. Pages would be passed around, discussions would ensue—but most of all, excitement would build.

As that excitement built I was constantly reminded that comics are unique. Unlike movies, or TV, or even video games, comics have no budgetary restraints. A writer and an artist working together as a team can move you from the banality of an office in a major American metropolis to the heart of a dying planet from one page to the next. They can bring characters you care passionately about to places that cannot possibly exist except in the realm of imagination…or in comics.

It is that blend of story and art—that sense of wonder—that you will see in such titles as AQUAMAN by Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis, or TEEN TITANS by Scott Lobdell and Brett Booth or THE FLASH by Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato. These are only three examples of the excitement we can finally share with you as part of the New 52.

September may be ending (longest September ever)—but for The New 52 and for DC Comics, trust me, things are only getting started…

See you in October,

Bob Harras – Editor in Chief
