Matt Kindt debuts as series writer of FRANKENSTEIN: Agent of S.H.A.D.E.

It was announced earlier today that Jeff Lemire will be writing JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK. Well, Jeff is super talented, but writing four ongoing series is a tough gig, so he’ll be leaving FRANKENSTEIN: AGENT OF S.H.A.D.E. and taking over for him is one of his favorite collaborators, Matt Kindt.

If you’re not familiar with Kindt’s work, you should be. Kindt’s an incredible writer and painter who has worked with Lemire on his ongoing Vertigo series SWEET TOOTH, produced the Vertigo original graphic novel REVOLVER and the Top Shelf original graphic novels Super Spy, 3 Story, and Pistolwhip.

Kindt and Lemire most recently collaborated on the final issue of MEN OF WAR (on sale April 4) which features Frankenstein during World War II. In a recent blog post, the two discussed their collaboration and Lemire revealed that “Matt has been a secret contributor to the series since it launched in September” making him the ideal candidate to take over as writer of FRANKENSTEIN: Agent of S.H.A.D.E.

This marks Kindt’s debut as an ongoing series writer. Here’s what he had to say about this exciting news:

“I'm so excited to be writing Frankenstein, Agent of S.H.A.D.E.! I've been good friends with Jeff Lemire since we both broke into comics years ago and I remember spending the weekend at his studio and kicking his ideas around for his take on Frank and Crew and just having a blast. Lemire was having so much fun putting these characters into action...and I think that fun really comes through.

And then getting the invite to officially work with him on Men of War...AND getting to put G.I. Robot into the story? – that's the kind of work that I would daydream about when I was a kid getting my comics from the grocery store spinner-rack. So now, getting my hands on a monthly book is just crazy.

I've had a pretty fortunate career to date by breaking into comics with my own original graphic novels. All I've known is creator-owned stuff. I've been spoiled – writing and drawing my own books. So in a lot of ways I feel like I'm the mirror image of a lot of writers that get the work-for-hire stuff straight away and then work to make the leap to creator-owned work. So for me, this is just a great big treat. Getting to work on characters that have been around forever and have a kind of cultural history already. It's just plain fun. I feel like I'm collaborating with everyone that's ever touched these characters before, from Grant Morrison to Bob Haney and Arnold Drake.

And working in the DC universe is liberating in a lot of ways. I'm getting a chance to hit more directly on a lot of genre stuff I haven't gotten to yet – science fiction and horror with all of my past espionage experience mixed into it. It's a crazy mix. I have to say that writing the scripts for Frankenstein has seriously been some of the most entertaining hours of my writing career.

Taking over for Jeff is just the added bonus – knowing where he was going with the series from the beginning and talking about these great characters he's rebooted has been fantastic. And it's going to be fun to surprise him (and the readers) with where it ends up going. There's Frank and his relationship with so-and-so (can't spoil it), the Mummy and his crazy origin. And we're going to get to see a lot more of S.H.A.D.E. and see how the agency works around the globe and visit a lot of crazy field offices. What is life as a S.H.A.D.E. agent really like? It's basically Steranko meets Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy, with some of the best spy-gadgets ever invented.

I was working on the Robot Man story for My Greatest Adventure and digging through my old Doom Patrol comics and I found this old issue of Secret Origins: Doom Patrol. In the middle of that issue was this fantastic essay about what the Doom Patrol was and what they represented. This is the comic that sold me on Doom Patrol and was my gateway to DC. So I'm sitting at a coffee shop re-reading this Secret Origins comic (that I'd picked up at the grocery store) and I realize it's written by Joey Cavalieri – who's now my editor on My Greatest Adventure and now Frankenstein, Agent of S.H.A.D.E. and it makes all of this seem right. Full circle and secret origin!”

Pick up issue #10 by Matt Kindt in June.

DC Comics All Access: Joey Cavalieri

Gimme a second, I'll be with you in just a little bit. The next issue of ANIMAL MAN is about to off to the printer, and I need to make sure that it's got everything it should. Sheer, stark terror at overwhelming forces beyond human comprehension, depicted in ways that would give Caligula nightmares? Check. The requisite amount of complete and utter strangeness that leaves even the most jaded comic book readers slackjawed? Check. Enough domestic squabbling among the Bakers to make our fans feel like the time they spent with their own families during the holidays was totally kumbaya by comparison? Check. Yep, thumbs up. This one's ready to go!

Now I can get on the phone with Jeff Lemire and we can talk about the year ahead for the benighted Baker clan. Spoiler alert: it's looking too good. For them, that is. You, on the other hand, are in for the thrill-ride of your lives.

Moritat has put the finishing touches on his inspired art for the latest issue of ALL STAR WESTERN, and it's a gem, a beauty, a joy to behold. Just to tease: beyond the usual deft characterizations and architectural delights, the particular issue all boils down to location, location, location. Two words: "Bat Cave." If you've been avoiding this title because of the word "Western" in it, let me tell you, I used to feel the same way. Then I grew up. Take it from a guy who never starts a sentence with the word "seriously." Seriously, Jimmy Palmiotti, Justin Gray and Moritat have broadened the horizons of what you can expect from a comic book Western. It would be a shame if you missed this because of some unfortunate predisposition toward people in Stetsons. The frontier symbolized freedom for generations, and in our small way it represents a creative freedom that has made the book a trailblazer.

Kevin Maguire dropped by yesterday, and I promised him that I'd try to get everybody here to learn to count to 53. The unofficial fifty-third book, at least from my standpoint, is MY GREATEST ADVENTURE, strong accent on the word "GREATEST." Kev showed me the pages for the "Tanga" feature in the latest issue, and they're just as wild and uninhibited and imaginative as anything he's ever done. Have you noticed how he's become the master of facial expression? Have you been laughing at Kevin's way of giving Tanga just the right smart remark? Have you been checking out the amazing coloring by Rosemary Cheetham? She made me say that. Actually, no, she didn't at all, but I think you should see it, if you like looking at things that are amazing. The stuff just doesn't look like anything else out there, and that gladdens me. Other amazing things in the book are Matt Kindt and Scott Kolins' Robotman feature, and Aaron Lopresti's Garbage Man. They really shine. When you're at the comic book rack, flip through MY GREATEST ADVENTURE and see for yourself. It's "one louder."

Your pal,

Joey Cavalieri

Frankenstein guest-stars in MEN OF WAR #8

At the helm of the final issue of MEN OF WAR are white hot writers Jeff Lemire (Animal Man, Frankenstein Agent of S.H.A.D.E., Sweet Tooth) and Matt Kindt (Revolver) with art by Tom Derenick.

In this action packed issue, Frankenstein walks through a rain of bombs over 1941 London before being dragged to the depths of the Pacific Ocean and onto the shores of Japan. Will he make it there in one piece so he can team up with GI Robot to defeat the Axis weapon that threatens to turn the tide of the war? Frank’s success will hinge on the help of a four-armed super-spy assassin working in the shadows.

We asked Jeff and Matt about working on this issue and here’s what they had to say:

"I first met Matt Kindt at the MoCCA festival in New York in 2005. He was selling copies of Super Spy and I was selling my first graphic novel, Lost Dogs. We hit it off right away and since then Matt has become one of my closest friends.

Coincidentally, Bob Harras told me I was going to be writing the Frankenstein: Agent of SHADE series, for the New 52, at last year's Emerald City Con in Seattle. I was sharing a hotel room with Matt that weekend and we spent the rest of the show talking about ideas for the book. Before long it turned into a full-on brainstorming session with Matt and a lot of the ideas from that weekend went into the first 5 or 6 issues of Frank. So Matt has been a secret contributor to the series since it launched in September.

So, when Joey Cavalieri asked me to write this special "Frankenstein in World War II" issue of Men of War, I immediately asked if Matt could co-write it with me. It was an incredibly fun experience. We just kept trying to top each other in terms of the crazy Ideas we could squeeze into the book, and I think fans are going to have as much fun reading it as we had writing it!" – Jeff Lemire

“It was fitting that Jeff and I worked on Frankenstein's secret World War II history together. We both dug up the craziest ideas we could think of -- literally I think we tried to top each other with some outrageous imagery and story ideas. We stitched it all together and then Tom applied the electricity (art) to bring this monster to life. Tom seriously drew what is my favorite double-page spread of all time in this issue. You'll know it when you see it. I have to say working with Jeff on this has easily been the most fun I've had doing comics so far...and I've had a lot of fun. And like all unholy unions I think the sum is even crazier than the parts!" - Matt Kindt

This 40-page event full of espionage and monster mayhem is not to be missed!
