DETECTIVE COMICS ANNUAL #1 Spotlight

This month, DC Comics will release its next batch of Annuals. These special oversized issues will not only build off of the events in their respective series, but will also greatly impact the expanding DC Universe. Every day this week on THE SOURCE, we’ll be putting individual spotlights on each of these Annual issues by talking to various writers, artists, and editors to give you special sneak peeks at what’s to come! First up is DETECTIVE COMICS ANNUAL #1.

“As a new member of the Batman group at DC Comics, it is a thrill working with Tony Daniel on DETECTIVE COMICS ANNUAL #1,” artist Romano Molenaar told THE SOURCE. “He knows exactly how to write for an artist which makes it a delight setting up the pages. Fans can expect fast-paced action and details all over the place as far as the art goes. Batman will need all of his physical and mental strength for this Annual and be ready for the return of one of his most diabolical villains!”

“The first DETECTIVE COMICS ANNUAL features the return of one of Batman’s most dangerous adversaries – the Black Mask!” added series editor Mike Marts. “Picking up from where readers last saw him in the ‘Night of the Owls’ storyline, gangster Roman Sionis has once again donned the maddening mask and formed his False Face Society. How will the Dark Knight combat this unique threat? And is there an even greater villain lurking in the shadows?”

Written by Tony S. Daniel and illustrated by Romano Molenaar, DETECTIVE COMICS ANNUAL #1 flies into stores on August 29.

As you may already know, joining writer Scott Snyder as guest artist for this issue is Becky Cloonan (DEMO; BEYOND THE FRINGE).

“The Bat-Office owes a huge thanks to Scott Snyder for hooking us up with Becky Cloonan,” BATMAN editor Mike Marts told THE SOURCE. “Becky’s an outstanding artist who has accomplished a lot of great projects in her career. We’re honored to have her illustrate BATMAN #12!”

Annuals Spotlight: BATMAN ANNUAL #1

Expanding the story of this month’s epic “Night of the Owls” crossover event, BATMAN ANNUAL #1 sheds a spotlight on one of the Dark Knight’s classic rogues: Mr. Freeze.

“This month’s BATMAN ANNUAL is a can’t miss for readers,” teased editor Mike Marts. “Not only does it feature the mysterious origin of Mr. Freeze, but it continues important story threads of ‘Night of the Owls,’ as well. This one has it all – Nightwing and Robin guest star, and the amazing art chores are handled by Jason Fabok, who drew a few issues of DARK KNIGHT for us last year. And let’s not forget the stunning story by BATMAN regular Scott Snyder and his co-writer James Tynion IV!”

BATMAN ANNUAL #1 is in stores next Wednesday. For a full exclusive preview of the issue, head on over to ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY.

EDITOR MIKE MARTS ON THE “NIGHT OF THE OWLS” CROSSOVER

The wait is over, and the war for Gotham City is about to begin. Pitting Batman and the extended Bat-family against the Court of Owls and their sinister agents, the long-awaited “Night of the Owls” crossover kicks off this week.

A shadowy secret society with deathless assassins known as Talons to execute its malevolent will, the Court has roots that reach back into Gotham’s deep past – and now this cadre of killers has mounted an all-out assault to exert its influence on the city’s present. It’s the Court of Owls versus the Allies of the Bat to determine once and for all who will rule the shadows of Gotham City.

With the “Night of the Owls” already underway, BATMAN Group Editor Mike Marts promises plenty of action still to come.

Here we are. “Night of the Owls” finally kicked off this week with BATMAN #8 and NIGHTWING #8, and it kicked off in a big way. But this is still just the beginning. There’s so much more story to tell – too much to be contained in these two series. The Owls have declared war on Gotham, but they’re going to have to contend with all of the allies of the Bat if they want to wrestle control of the city. So if you think things are hot already, just wait until the story spills into DETECTIVE COMICS #9, BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT: #9, CATWOMAN #9, BATWING #9, BIRDS OF PREY #9, RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS #9 and BATGIRL #9. We’ve seen first blood, but we’ve got a lot more to be spilled before we’re done.

The “Night of the Owls” began this week in BATMAN #8 and NIGHTWING #8, and will explode across the rest of the Bat-books in May.

Exclusive first look at Dale Keown’s variant cover for BATMAN #9

There’s still one week left until the “Night of the Owls” crossover event officially kicks off in BATMAN #8 (in stores 04/18). To help hold you over until then, take an exclusive first look at Dale Keown’s variant cover for next month’s issue #9, which sets Batman against an army of Talons hell-bent on destroying Gotham City from the inside out.

“What's not to love about drawing the coolest character in comics?” t artist Dale Keown told THE SOURCE. “I wasn't given any back story so I went with the action shot that would fit into just about any storyline. One of my go-to poses is to draw the character leaping out towards the reader. I hope I get to draw Batman again soon.”

“What a great opportunity to have comics superstar Dale Keown chip in and provide us with this amazing Batman image,” said BATMAN editor Mike Marts. “Dale’s variant cover for BATMAN #9 coincides with our exciting NIGHT OF THE OWLS event, which spans across all of the Bat-titles for the month of May.”

SERIES EDITOR MIKE MARTS ON BATMAN, INCORPORATED

We recently announced DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 “Second Wave,” featuring six new series coming in May. In BATMAN, INCORPORATED, critically acclaimed writer Grant Morrison returns to the world he helped populate with a global Bat-presence, all in preparation for a major international threat. Already re-imagining the early history of Superman in ACTION COMICS, Morrison brings a fresh take on Batman to DC COMICS-THE NEW 52. BATMAN series editor Mike Marts offers some editorial insight as to what readers can expect from the highly-anticipated series.

“Grant Morrison’s new BATMAN, INCORPORATED series is the final, unbelievable act of a saga six years in the making,” said Marts. “Along with his artistic partner-in-crime Chris Burnham, Grant delivers twists, turns, punches and reveals no reader will see coming. Things pick up directly after the shocking cliffhanger of last year’s LEVIATHAN STRIKES one-shot—and only get crazier from there!”

In the meantime, check out these sneak peeks at BATMAN, INCORPORATED.

DETECTIVE COMICS Back-Ups Spotlight Two-Face

DETECTIVE COMICS #8 will feature the first in a multi-part series of back-up stories following Harvey Dent and his villainous alter ego, Two-Face. Written by Tony S. Daniel (writer/artist of DETECTIVE COMICS) and drawn by Szymon Kudranski, the 10-page stories will offer a unique look into Dent’s secret past and an in-depth examination of the monster he’s become. Daniel and Kudranski collaborated previously on “Russian Roulette,” the one-shot back-up in DETECTIVE COMICS #5, which was released last week.

Since the launch of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, Two-Face has made only a brief cameo appearance in the first few issues of BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT. These back-ups will reveal the classic character’s full history. Following his sojourn in Arkham Asylum, Dent will attempt to rebuild himself as a man, even as his dark side continues to exert its influence upon him.

"I'm really looking forward to working with Szymon Kudraski, who'll no doubt capture the dark mood and tone I'm reaching for in DETECTIVE COMICS,” said Daniel. “I'm going deep into the character of Harvey Dent and the inner conflicts and demons he must confront.  I'm approaching the characters and story the way I would a multi-layered psychological thriller, one that covers a man at the losing end of a battle within himself."

“Readers who have enjoyed the twists, turns and surprises of Tony’s run on DETECTIVE so far will love this special story featuring Two-Face,” said Mike Marts, BATMAN group editor. “This is Harvey Dent as we’ve never seen him before—a new threat, a new troubled soul for DC COMICS-THE NEW 52!”

Remembering Jerry Robinson

“Jerry Robinson illustrated some of the defining images of pop culture’s greatest icons. As an artist myself, it’s impossible not to feel humbled by his body of work. Everyone who loves comics owes Jerry a debt of gratitude for the rich legacy that he leaves behind.”—Jim Lee, DC Entertainment Co-Publisher and artist of BATMAN: HUSH

“Jerry Robinson was one of the greats. He continued to be a vibrant, creative force, with ideas and thoughts that continue to inspire. Jerry was a great advocate for creators. It was my pleasure to meet and work with him. He will be missed.”—Dan DiDio, Co-Publisher, DC Entertainment

“It’s impossible to work at DC Entertainment without feeling the impact of Jerry Robinson’s contributions to the industry. His influence continues to resonate today.”—Bob Harras, DC Entertainment Editor-in-Chief

“Jerry Robinson was an innovator, a pioneer in storytelling. His artwork was always astonishing, but his contributions to the Dark Knight mythology go far beyond art. The streets of Gotham City are a little lonelier today...Jerry will truly be missed.”—Mike Marts, BATMAN editor

DC Comics All Access: Mike Marts

Wow. Where to begin? These are exciting times at DC Comics...our new 52 titles are off to a great start, and we have YOU to thank for all of the positive buzz. There are so many exciting projects in my office I could mention...Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's BATMAN...our new BATWING series...the all-new BLACKHAWKS...but today I'm talking about one project in particular...

Pain. Prejudice. Two words I don't normally associate with things that are great, but hey, an editor can change the way he thinks about things, right? And this project has definitely changed my way of looking at things. This project is an eye-opener, pure and simple.

PENGUIN: PAIN AND PREJUDICE is more than just a character study, more than just a five-issue miniseries debuting this October. PENGUIN: PAIN AND PREJUDICE is a seductive, in-depth look into the past, present (and perhaps the future) of Batman's most complex foe, Oswald Cobblepot--THE PENGUIN.

So you think you're familiar with the intimate secrets of Cobblepot's dark past? Think again.

L.A. Times best-selling author and suspense novelist Gregg Hurwitz delivers a sinister, macabre tale that is brilliantly illustrated by graphic artist Szymon Kudranski (BRUCE WAYNE: THE ROAD HOME, MANHUNTER, Spawn). Both creators are at the top of their game with this project. I couldn't be more happy.

Well, actually I could be more happy...I'd be happy if everyone reading this column rushes to pick up (or download!) a copy of PENGUIN: PAIN AND PREJUDICE. You won't want to miss it. Trust me--it's an eye opener!
