FLASHPOINT FRIDAY: “As readers we want Superman to be Superman – noble, solid, heroic. What happens when the world conspires to thwart that?” – Lowell Francis

flashpoint-logo_whiteNeil Sinclair was just the average soldier until he volunteered to become the military’s first line of defense against alien and monster threats as part of Project Superman. Alien DNA was grafted onto his own, transforming Neil into “Subject Zero”, giving him an entire arsenal of powers. But as his abilities continued to expand and his strength grew, Neil began to lose control. Too powerful to be controlled, he was locked away, until one fateful day in Metropolis during a meteor shower...

“The FLASHPOINT event is about good intentions gone wildly out of control. And that's true of our story in PROJECT SUPERMAN too. A few people came in thinking they could control events, but learned there was no steering wheel. It's been a wildly creative book and a completely new look at Superman. I'm glad I got to work with Scott and Lowell on this and seeing the story unwind and change, it's definitely not the book we expected going in,” artist Gene Ha told us.

“I love alternate history stories,” said plot co-creator and script writer Lowell Francis. “Hite's Law states that "All alternate histories produce zeppelins," so we have those in the background in a couple of spots. In thinking about this, I went back to reread everything I could by Howard Waldrop, the master of these kinds of tales. Ultimately, in talking with Scott, I saw how we could give insight into a slice of the FLASHPOINT history and really explore some characters. I think as readers we want Superman to be Superman - noble, solid, heroic. What happens when the world conspires to thwart that?”
