(Everybody’s Talkin’ About) DC Comics-The New 52, Monday Evening (ET) Edition

On Wednesday, the first set of issue #2s from DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 will go on sale. There's a ton of exclusive previews out there to whet your appetite.

USA TODAY has your first look at ACTION COMICS #2. "He has his reasons and they almost kind of make sense," series writer Grant Morrison told USA TODAY of Lex Luthor. "But then you dig a little deeper and you find this very petty, jealous, envious man, and unfortunately that's what drives his brilliance. He's a very strong character and has to be a real balance with Superman."

THE NEW YORK DAILY NEWS ran an exclusive preview of O.M.A.C. #2. "OMAC is a character I remember when it first came out. I enjoyed it immensely," said series writer Dan DiDio to THE NEW YORK DAILY NEWS. "The idea that you think you're in control of things and you lose your sense of control and that even when you think you're doing things your own way, someone else may be leading you — it was really a fascinating core theme."

Along with their exclusive preview of GREEN ARROW #2, POPMATTERS wrote a terrific analytic post about the psychology of the series. “For nothing more than a ‘solid superhero story’, Krul and Jurgens evoke a richness that is seldom glimpsed at,” they wrote.

IGN has your exclusive first look at BATWING #2 and NEWSARAMA premiered a 5-page interior sequence from HAWK AND DOVE #2.

Just in time for the haunting month of October, the CHICAGO TRIBUNE ran their list of the 10 Best Horror Graphic Novels for Halloween. DC Entertainment secured 5 of the 10 spots, with titles including BATMAN: THE LONG HALLOWEEN, SWAMP THING VOL. 1, BOOKS OF MAGIC, ARKHAM ASYLUM and HELLBLAZER.

And continuing the spooky theme this month brings, top ranking horror website BLOODY DISGUSTING talked horror/dark comics with I, VAMPIRE writer Joshua Hale Fialkov. “For me, I wanted to take the best parts of horror and romance fiction, and combine it with what makes DC Comics great,” Fialkov said of his series. “We have a huge canvas to paint on, we will we rub-up against other characters and books, which is a blast to write. I'm really being given the freedom to tell a huge story all on my own with all of these great toys to play with. You'll definitely see some huge DC characters in the book in the not too distant future.”

Buzz and anticipation for DC Comics-The New 52 continues to build

This Wednesday, 8/31, DC Comics-The New 52 will officially kick off with the midnight release of Geoff Johns and Jim Lee’s JUSTICE LEAGUE #1. Over the past few days, the excitement and chatter leading up to the just-around-the-corner launch of DC Comics-The New 52 has been amplified. Here’s a look at some of the highlights.

THE NEW YORK POST ran an exclusive preview of BATGIRL #1 (in stores next week). "It’s tremendously exciting to see her smiling on the cover of her own hit book finally, ready to kick ass against Gotham City’s worst monsters," series writer Gail Simone told NEW YORK POST. This exclusive 5-page preview of BATGIRL #1 is the first of many high profile previews running over the course of the next few weeks (but don’t worry – we’ll be linking to all of them on THE SOURCE for your convenience).

USA TODAY has a slew of exciting features. Head on over to their website to read their extensive coverage of the launch of DC Comics-The New 52, watch a new video interview from San Diego Comic-Con with DC Entertainment Co-Publisher and JUSTICE LEAGUE artist Jim Lee, read an interview with DC Entertainment’s SVP of Digital, Hank Kanalz, about the same-date initiative and see an exclusive preview of FLASHPOINT #5.

THE NEW YORK DAILY NEWS ran a piece on the launch of DC Comics-The New 52, with quotes from DC Entertainment’s Co-Publishers, Dan DiDio and Jim Lee. The article touched on various aspects of DC Comics-The New 52, including the addition of Cyborg to the Justice League team. "Cyborg is the 21st Century superhero," JUSTICE LEAGUE writer Geoff Johns said. "By telling Cyborg's origin story as part of the origin of the Justice League, we put a spotlight on one of DC’s greatest characters. He's part man, part machine. He's us. When we text or connect to the net with our smart phones and iPads, when we use technology as an extension of our daily life we are by definition a cyborg."

THE BOSTON HERALD featured a story on the kicking off DC Comics-The New 52. “Any time you do something like this,” Dan DiDio explained, “there’s always a level of risk. To improve the quality of material, we had to change the look of the characters, make them younger and accessible and bring new sensibilities to our storytelling.”

UGO has compiled a guide to DC Comics-The New 52, which chronicles all the changes being heralded in. Learn about costume redesigns, day-and-date and more here.

"Superman is one of the World's Greatest Super Heroes, but he can't have it all," DC Entertainment Co-Publisher Jim Lee told THE NEW YORK DAILY NEWS. "Many of us know what it's like to be the odd man out and we think readers will have a soft spot for Clark when they see his reaction to Lois' new boyfriend."

“In resetting Superman's story and origin, it gave us a chance to revisit the challenges of that relationship in a contemporary setting,” said DC Entertainment Co-Publisher Dan DiDio.

SUPERMAN #1, by George Perez and Jesus Merino, flies into stores on September 28th.

A few links of note: SUPERMAN “GROUNDED”

Because you can never have too much BLACKEST NIGHT

In a little under a week, the comic book industry will converge for San Diego Comic-Con, arguably the largest pop culture event of the year. And one comic book series will be the talk of the show: BLACKEST NIGHT, by New York Times-bestselling writer Geoff Johns and superstar artist Ivan Reis.

Five years in the making, this blockbuster summer event is equal parts chilling zombie horror show and gut-wrenching and gripping personal drama, involving the most famous comic book heroes ever known.

Johns and Reis team up to not only raise the dead in a frightening and surprising way, but to also bring new meaning and definition to the concept in comics, in a story that will both shock and engage you amidst a War of Light between the various Lantern Corps representing the entire emotional spectrum.

As the BLACKEST NIGHT spreads, the dead shall rise. Are you ready?

And, as if you'd need any more convincing, a few press hits have already landed, on this day of BLACKEST NIGHT. USA WEEKEND spoke to Johns today, as did THE NEW YORK DAILY NEWS. If you head over to IGN, they've got a complete guide to the series, while NEWSARAMA outlines the 10 things you need to know about BLACKEST NIGHT. If that's not enough, COMIC BOOK RESOURCES also talks to Johns aas part of their regular "Geoff Johns Prime" feature.

Happy Monday, all. By now, you've probably pried yourself away from the pile of free goodies you snagged from your local comic shop on Free Comic Book Day, which was Saturday at participating stores. How was it? Get anything cool? As you probably know, FCBD also marked the debut of BLACKEST NIGHT #0, kicking off this summer's mega-event from writer Geoff Johns and artist Ivan Reis, along with artist Doug Mahnke. If you haven't gotten a copy, you might have time to take an early lunch and beg your favorite retailer to pretend it's Saturday.

THE NEW YORK DAILY NEWS kicked things off for New Yorkers with a nice primer of events happening in the Big Apple.

Geoff Boucher, over at THE LA TIMES Hero Complex blog, had a nice general FCBD primer for fans on the big day, which is worth checking out to get a sense of what publishers were offering.

USA TODAY's David Colton also had a nice FCBD preview, along with a quote from our very own Geoff Johns, who summed up the event like so:

"It's like the peace summit of comic books when all of the major publishers work together," says Geoff Johns, writer of DC's Green Lantern. "There's always something for everyone."

• Speaking of USA TODAY, over at their Pop Candy blog, Whitney Matheson points out five books fans should've picked up on FCBD, including BLACKEST NIGHT #0, which Whitney described as: "Green Lantern fans are psyched about this all-new story that introduces the new series and is guaranteed to include more top-notch writing from Johns."

• Additionally, Comic Book Resources had a 15-hour marathon of coverage, while Newsarama made their annual FCBD pilgrimage to Heroes Aren't Hard to Find, in Charlotte.

So, how was your Free Comic Book Day? Let us know.
