Kenneth Rocafort covers ACTION #902

There are few better ways to start a workday than by posting a killer Action Comics cover. This one comes from the incredibly talented Kenneth Rocafort, whose issue #901 cover we showed off here a while back, and will be joining Paul Cornell to handle art duties on the series starting in ACTION COMICS #900.

Here are a few words about Kenneth Rocafort from Associate Editor Wil Moss:

"We knew we needed really powerful covers for a story as big as 'Reign of Doomsday,' but who could possibly fill those shoes? Enter Art Director Mark Chiarello, who drew our attention to the amazing artwork of Mr. Kenneth Rocafort. Once we saw it, we KNEW Kenneth was the perfect guy for these covers -- an artist who could really hammer home how bombastic and brutal this 'Reign of Doomsday' story is gonna be!"

ACTION COMICS #902 hits stores in June.

How does the world's smartest man spend Valentine's Day?

You might have noticed it's Valentine's Day. Maybe you have big plans for tonight or maybe you're avoiding the holiday and wish I hadn't brought it up.

The DC Universe is full of interesting couples: Clark Kent and Lois Lane, Aquaman and Mera, Barry Allen and Iris West, the Hawks. Hey, Catman and Huntress have a big date coming up, so we'll see where that leads...

But what about the world's smartest man? I e-mailed Paul Cornell to ask him how Lex Luthor might me spending the day. Here's what he had to say:

"Lex Luthor isn’t one for Valentine’s Day treats, but he built Robot Lois Lane to surprise and challenge him, so when she asked to go out and see a Broadway show, he was interested enough to agree. The show was Wicked, which Lex impatiently sat through. At dinner afterwards, he asked her why she’d wept at the spectacle of someone who took so long to realize they were surrounded by fools who would never accept them. If he’d been involved, he’d have conquered gravity rather than defied it. Also he was quite surprised she could weep. Lois told him she enjoyed dramas about betrayal. That she learned from them. That made Lex laugh: now he saw what she meant, that his Lois was so like him, was literally made for him, to seek to understand his own experience! Which made her turn her face away to hide her expression. And as soon as her face was turned, Lex’s own smile vanished. They had a big day coming up, a flight into space to retrieve the black spheres that would lead Lex to ultimate power. So they got an early night."

Two great villains in a meeting of minds...

We've shown a tiny bit of Action Comics #897's Lex Luthor / Joker match-up, but the issue's just too good not to share more of it in advance. That Paul Cornell and Pete Woods are able to capture everything we love about these two deranged villains so well in a single scene really speaks wonders about just how great they've been on this book.

ACTION COMICS #897 is on sale Wednesday. (You can place your guesses at the answers to The Joker's riddles in the comments below.)

Jonathan Ross to make a cameo in Knight & Squire #5

From Superman vs. Muhammad Ali to even stranger appearances such as Orson Welles and John Walsh, celebrities have a long tradition of showing up in the DC Universe.  This year won't be any different, as British comedian and television host Jonathan Ross will appear in next months’ KNIGHT & SQUIRE #5.

Here  are a few words about Mr. Ross's cameo from the Knight & Squire creative team:

It's an absolute pleasure to feature Britain's  most famous comic fan, collector and now professional in an issue of Knight and Squire, and thanks very much to Jonathan for being such a sport in allowing it to happen.  I'm only sorry we haven't given him powers and  a costume.

- Paul Cornell

Capturing Mr. Ross's boyish good looks and natural charm was an artistic challenge, getting his suit right, an artistic triumph!

- Jimmy Broxton

Look out  for Jonathan Ross in KNIGHT & SQUIRE #5, on sale in  February.

Has The Absence gotten the best of Batman in BATMAN AND ROBIN #19?

If we've learned anything from Paul Cornell and Scott McDaniel's Batman and Robin issues, it's that The Absence isn't quite all there up in her noggin, and I'm not just talking about the giant hole in her head. The lady's scary-crazy.

You might've also learned just how well Paul Cornell can write a cool villain -- if you're a Batman fan who hasn't yet checked out his killer Lex Luthor stories occurring in ACTION COMICS, you're missing out.

BATMAN ROBIN #19 wraps up the three-part "The Sum of Her Parts" story and is on sale next week. Pete Tomasi and Patrick Gleason will be taking the Batman and Robin reigns with issue #20.

DCU in 2011: David Finch and special guests contribute to ACTION COMICS' 900th issue

Action Comics hits a big milestone issue this year, and it only seems appropriate it gets a top-notch cover from a top-notch artist.

Without further ado, David Finch's cover to ACTION COMICS #900:

900-coversm

Superman versus (I'll argue) his greatest villain. How much more apropos can you get for a landmark cover to Action Comics?

But wait - there's more! In addition to a 50-page lead story by the team that’s been punching this book out of the park for for the last ten issues, Paul Cornell and Pete Woods, the oversized 900th issue will also feature short stories by some very exciting names to be announced soon.

Excited? Stay tuned to the Source for more news about Action Comics #900.
