ZATANNA #1 unveiled

The Mistress of Magic steps into her own ongoing series from writer Paul Dini and artist Stephane Roux, and none too soon. Zatanna Zatara has long made her home in San Francisco, but right under her nose a sinister threat has developed – a crime boss who dominates the criminal underworld with the dark powers of the magical underworld/ The terrifying Brother Night is making his play for San Fran, and the police force – including hunky detective Dale Colton – turn to Zee for help. But Brother Night is a whole new kind of criminal and if Zatanna thinks she can backwards-talk him down, then she's in over her head.

The first issue hits in May, but we’ve got a look at some black and white pages – Roux’s first interior work – right here to prep you for the series to come.

Don’t have the magic skills to decipher Joey’s mystical message? Click below – after you marvel at that cover.

ZATANNA IS COMING! Paul Dini and Stephane Roux – aided by Karl Story – are working together to give the magician her own monthly ongoing series. They’ve been working on her book under the radar for quite some time now, but it is finally ready for when May rolls around. A great surprise for the middle of spring!

Paul has introduced a brand new mystical villain for Zattana to confront…an otherwordly menace named Brother Night! His powers are formidable indeed!

And thank god It’s visual, because proofreading Zatanna’s spells has driven me insane! The spellcheck is on help! Also, thank god for words like “radar” that are the same backwards and forward!

-- Joey Cavalieri

Zatanna strikes out on her own

One of the many things I've learned while blogging here at THE SOURCE is knowing when to step aside and let the creative minds behind our books do the talking. This is one of those times.

Starting in May, the DCU will feature a new ongoing series, from writer Paul Dini and artist Stephane Roux: ZATANNA. Hinted at and much-discussed over the last few months, we're happy to finally lift the curtain. And we've got some words from Dini. Take it away, Paul:

Outside of her star turn in 7 SOLDIERS OF VICTORY, her ongoing supporting role in JLA and guest appearances elsewhere, Zatanna doesn't come with a lot of backstory. That's both a blessing and a challenge for me as a writer. I don't have to adhere to 70 years of continuity, but that doesn't give me a lot of history to draw from, either. That said, I've been having a lot of fun populating her world with new characters, friends and allies as well as an entirely new mystical rogues gallery. I'm out to create some really unique and creepy villains, ones that aggressively prey on humankind the way gangsters in a crime book would victimize innocent people. As Zatanna herself says in the first issue, there's little in the way of human punishment that can be enforced on evil mystics. There are few laws they are compelled to obey, no jails to hold them, and no way ordinary people can defend themselves from their attacks. Zatanna has taken it upon herself to operate as both peacekeeper and avenger between those two worlds.

Though a lot about Zatanna's world is new, it is still firmly rooted in the DC Universe. She's still a JLA member, and that will play into her stories now and then. Also, I plan to explore her somewhat dicey relationship with her younger cousin, Zachary Zatara. I saw a good chance to inject some family discord there, so when I was developing the book, I ran some ideas by Geoff Johns. He created Zach, so I wanted to get his okay before I shook things up. Luckily Geoff was cool with what I wanted to do, so readers can expect to see Zach becoming a permanent part of Zee's world.

But there's more. Take a look at some of these jaw-droppingly amazing Roux interiors:

[gallery link="file"]

Wait, there's more. Mr. Roux had more than art to share, so we got his thoughts as well:

"What can I say about being attached to the project? I'm a fan of the character AND a longer-time fan of the writer. Paul's delivering very exciting scripts, pushing the character in directions that make it so much fun for me to draw. I'm dealing with various dimensions, litterally. You'll be scared, you'll be excited, you'll enjoy the fights she's going through. And because it's Paul, because it's Zatanna, I simply can't afford to deliver average art. Not to mention Karl Story's sure helping me make art look great. Hope the effort shows, hope you like it."

Another look at Dustin Nguyen’s cover process

The first time we did this, it went over so well, it made perfect sense to extend the invite to Dustin to discuss the process behind another BATMAN: STREETS OF GOTHAM cover. So, take it away, Dustin:

1batmansogcover_thumbs1

1- Thumb #2 of the 5 approved involved showcasing Robin as well. Robin has always been tough for me, every time i drew Tim Drake, he was too young, but now- Damien is young, so this works well for me. This one was very Toppi inspired as well and a bit more experimental than i normally do, but i felt the grit was important.

2coverbr_pencils

2- Knowing i will soak this paper up a bit, i also opted to go with the 300lb hotpress, it's smooth enough for the quill and can take a beating from my pencils. The rough basically lays down the more simple elements, making way for placement of logo, bar code, etc. In next stage,i do add on quiet a bit and change many things when i start to finalize for painting.

3coverbr_paint

3- unlike going in digitally for coloring like in the previous cover, i lay down paint before i go in with inks. This is done mostly because watercolor usually paints itself and painting first helps me decide where to laydown holding lines and any rendering i'd like to add. this also helps keep the ink from getting faded or bleeding when washes are layered down. Sometimes, i do reverse the process to get fades and certain effects, but in this cover i wanted more textures in the colors while having crisp black lines.

4coverbr_final

4- finally, the inks are put down using a variety of quills and brushes, scanned in and then adjusted to bring in the right amount of saturation and hues.

Very cool. Thanks again, Dustin!

A look inside a BATMAN: STREETS OF GOTHAM cover

Not long ago, we checked in with GOTHAM CITY SIRENS artist Guillem March to get some insight into his creative process when it comes to creating cover artwork for the series. The post worked so well, we thought it'd be cool to check in with another Bat-artist. This time, we got some notes from none other than Dustin Nguyen, artist on BATMAN: STREETS OF GOTHAM. Take it away, Dustin:

1batmansogcover_thumbs

1- for this one( thumb # 1), i was approved for 2 of my 5 sketches turned in, so was able to work on them both at the same time. This was especially fun because they both allowed me the use of heavy blacks and playing with ink and quill a bit, really playing up my love for Sergio Toppi's work.

2coverbatmansog_pencils

2- after figuring out logo placement and making sure the image would work nicely once at comic book size, i start to layout in pencil on 300lb hotpress watercolor stock. at this point, i wasn't sure how much ink and water i wanted to put on it. so 300lb is a nice safe paper.

3coverbatmansog_bw

3- i move into inking the piece with quills and brush and a soft graywash for atmosphere.

4coverbatmansog_final

4- Finally- from the original thumb, i felt this piece would be strongest with bold crisp colors, so i opted to go with photoshop to add the colors rather than watercolor itself. The choices of classic blue and yellow is from my love of the way Batman looked in the 80's comics i grew up on, not to mention Dark Knight Returns.
