Preview Monday: THRESHOLD #2 and SAUCER COUNTRY #12

Welcome back for another installment of Preview Monday! This week, we’re giving you exclusive first looks at THRESHOLD #2 and SAUCER COUNTRY #12.

Following last month’s action packed debut issue of THRESHOLD, the hunt is on for the newest contestants in “The Hunted,” a reality TV style competition show that expands an entire alien solar system! This week, the show introduces its latest contestant: Jaimie Reyes (a.k.a. Blue Beetle)! What do the producers have planned for this reluctant Reach warrior? Could they involve Green Lantern Jediah Caul? Also, be sure not to miss the latest chapter of Larfleeze’s back up story! Will Larfleeze ever find the thieves responsible for stealing all of his treasures, and most importantly, his power battery? Find out in THRESHOLD #2, in stores this Wednesday, written by Keith Giffen and illustrated by Tom Raney, Phil Winslade, and Scott Kolins. Click here for an exclusive preview of the issue.

Also this week, “President’s Day” begins in SAUCER COUNTRY #12. While Arcadia races to close the gap on her rival in the election, Professor Kidd’s life is falling apart. Will Arcadia continue to trust him after he reveals a startling secret about himself? Written by Paul Cornell and drawn by Ryan Kelly, SAUCER COUNTRY #12 lands in stores this Wednesday. Click here for an exclusive preview of the issue.

Jimmy Palmiotti Introduces The Barbary Ghost

With ALL-STAR WESTERN’s extra page count, Justin and I were given a chance to not only expand the storylines of classic D.C. western characters, but to bring some new and exciting characters into the universe as well. Issue 4 of ALL-STAR WESTERN introduces the debut of a brand new character called The Barbary Ghost, featuring the incredible art of Phil Winslade, the vibrant colors of Dominic Regan and the master of comic book lettering, Rob Leigh. The story itself takes place way west of Gotham… in 1878 San Francisco, in the area known as the Barbary Coast: known for it’s development during the California gold rush, and since then has become famous for its gambling, prostitution and crime.

Our story follows the plight of the Tsen family, a group of Chinese immigrants coming to the new world to make a fresh start for themselves in America. More specifically, we focus on the daughter of the family, Yanmei, as she deals with crime lord Bo Long, and his gang of killers and thieves as they shake down her family for protection money. With any introduction of any new character, we establish the world around her, the supporting cast of her family members, and introduce a situation where the odds are stacked against our hero. We felt, looking at all the western characters out there, that featuring a character that has a Chinese background would be an interesting twist to the western genre, and at the same time introduce the reader to another story about the world back then that isn’t covered very much in comics. The history of the old west is so rich and fascinating, we wanted to create characters that would not only be interesting, but also keep with the tradition of ALL-STAR WESTERN. The story itself is a classic tale of revenge set against some horrible conditions …a story where we see how one person can step up against all odds, and make a difference. The Barbary Ghost has all the classic themes and we think just the right stuff to become an important part of the new D.C. universe.

-- Jimmy Palmiotti (ALL-STAR WESTERN)

Pardon me while I gush over The Spirit for a moment

spv2_9_dylux-2-copy

I eagerly anticipate the next issues of Green Lantern, Action, Detective and Brightest Day each month as much as the next guy, but I'll take a few paragraphs here to talk about a book that's quietly snuck its way to the top of my read pile each week it's been released.

For the past nine issues of the series, David Hine and Moritat not only created a comic that captures the spirit (no pun intended) of what makes the The Spirit fun, but also a series that's very accessible to comic fans who haven't been lucky enough to read all of Will Eisner's original Spirit (I'm about 1/3rd of my way into that epic undertaking myself, courtesy of a pile of The Spirit Archives volumes tracked down around the office.)

And if that weren't enough, I'd be remiss not to talk about the great black & white co-features by guest creators that make up the back of each issue.

I mean, we had a Harlan Ellison and Kyle Baker co-feature story a few issues back. HARLAN ELLISON. Really, the talent they round up to do those second stories is pretty sick. Walt Simonson and Jordi Bernet. Joe Strnad and Richard Corben. Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso. David Lapham and Michael WM. Kaluta. Marv Wolfman and Phil Winslade. Denny O'Neil and Bill Sienkiewicz. Michael Uslan, FJ DeSanto and Justiniano. This issue's co-feature is by Paul Dini and Mike Ploog. That's a group of creators that you'd be really hard-pressed to beat in just one year's worth of a single monthly comic title.

Et tu? Are you reading The Spirit? Which co-feature's been your favorite?

THE SPIRIT #9 is in stores today.

DC brings back key war titles in September

The DC offices are closed today, so posting will be light. And, I should be well on my ways to a few days of rest in the Florida Keys as you read this. But we do have one cool bit of news for you to carry you through this Memorial Day weekend.

This September, DC will bring back a number of familiar war titles in a series of one shots from a number of the best and brightest creators in the industry, including Darwyn Cooke and Ivan Brandon on WEIRD WAR TALES, B. Clay Moore and Chad Hardin on OUR FIGHTING FORCES, the return of OUR ARMY AT WAR, William Tucci and Justiniano on STAR-SPANGLED WAR STORIES and Matt Surges and artist Phil Winslade on G.I. COMBAT, with each issue sporting a cover from an A-list pool of artists that include Cooke, Mark Schultz, Geof Darrow, Joe Kubert and Brian Bolland.

Not enough for you? Well, here’s a first look at the WEIRD WAR TALES #1 cover by Cooke and G.I. COMBAT from Darrow.

Have a great weekend.
