PREVIEWS OF WEDNESDAY’S DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 RELEASES

Here’s a round up of exclusive previews from the third round of fifth issues from DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, on sale tomorrow.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY had an exclusive preview of BATMAN #5, and USA TODAY had a first look at NIGHTWING #5, featuring an interview with writer Kyle Higgins. Higgins laid out a key distinction between Gotham’s heroes, saying that "the difference between Dick and Bruce has always been that Bruce does what he does out of this sense of guilt and this feeling he has to. And Dick Grayson does what he does because he genuinely enjoys helping people. He's a much more empathetic character and he's someone who enjoys people and interaction.” MTV GEEK ran a sneak peek at RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS #5, NEWSARAMA ran a first look at BIRDS OF PREY #5 and pages from CATWOMAN #5 were featured on the DC COMICS FACEBOOK PAGE.

Beyond the BATMAN books, GAWKER’S KOTAKU had an exclusive preview of WONDER WOMAN #5, IGN offered a first look at CAPTAIN ATOM #5, SUPERGIRL #5 was featured on WIRED’S GEEK DAD and POPMATTERS showcased a sequence from DC UNIVERSE PRESENTS #5.

Head over to COMIC BOOK RESOURCES for a first look at LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #5, and check out pages from GREEN LANTERN CORPS #5 on COMICVINE and BLUE BEETLE #5 at IFANBOY.

52 Titles. One Universe.

As we keep having more and more success with The New 52 (thanks to you readers!) we find that we're also having more and more fun. Getting up and running was tricky, but right now I'm reading scripts for issues #6 and 7 of most series and all I can think about is how amazing this is. We're at the point where we can start adding some new wrinkles for our characters and really drive home the sense that there are no limits with our comics. So far we've been talking a lot about 52 different books, but it's important to remember that all of these stories take place in the same universe. You're going to be seeing more of that continuity as we go along. But maybe not the way you'd expect. Let me explain ...

Jeff Lemire and Scott Snyder dropped by my office the other day. Jeff--in case you didn't know--writes ANIMAL MAN, a truly awesome series (drawn by the amazingly talented Travel Foreman) that's taken comics by storm. Scott helms SWAMP THING, an equally awesome series drawn by the equally talented Yanick Paquette. They were in to present a story that involves both characters in an intertwined saga that will change the lives of Buddy Baker and Alec Holland forever. After the pitch, Executive Editor Eddie Berganza and I were quite simply blown away. I advise fans of phenomenal storytelling everywhere to check out these two titles--as seeds for this upcoming epic are already being sown organically throughout these two books from the Dark corner of our world.

Scott and Jeff certainly aren't the only creators exchanging ideas and cross-pollinating series. Another Scott-Lobdell, this time--and Fabian Nicieza are working on a storyline that will flow between TEEN TITANS, SUPERBOY and LEGION LOST. It explores everything from the mystery of Project N.O.W.H.E.R.E, the organization that developed Superboy as the ultimate weapon, to the tragedy of the mysterious Hypertaxis virus brought to our century from the future by the time-lost Legionnaires, to how both impact our newly formed group of young heroes.

And over in the BATMAN titles, the aforementioned and prolific Mr. Scott Snyder has crafted a tale involving the Court of Owls and its deadly Talon assassins that may soon impact the storylines in NIGHTWING, BATGIRL, BIRDS OF PREY and even RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS.

All these upcoming stories encapsulate the excitement our writers and artists are feeling, as they explore our characters and their natural connections. The key idea here is "natural connections." All these ideas are being generated by the excitement our talent and editors have for all these amazing characters sharing our universe. In short, we're building a new mythology with The New 52, and it is a privilege to be a part of it.

Keep reading, folks--I guarantee, you too are going to be blown away!

SCRIPPS HOWARD NEWS SERVICE reviewed BATMAN: NOEL, writing that “Batman at the center of a classic Christmas story is simply terrific.”

Meanwhile, COMIC BOOK RESOURCES interviewed T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS writer Nick Spencer. “The technology and its creation through the years is a major part of this story,” Spencer said about T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS Vol. 2, which premieres in stores later this month. “In the first issue, we start seeing what some of these things are, and Daniel in particular has a very big role to play in this story. All of those threads we set up, in the first issue especially, are all things that will be wrapped up here.”

DC All Access: Bobbie Chase

Working in a vacuum for the last six months since I started working at DC, I looked forward to the September launch of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 with a mix of excitement and nervousness. How would readers respond to some of the more pivotal changes to their favorite characters, and this massive DC undertaking? And while working on these beloved characters and having a huge amount of fun shaping them into what they've become - in my case BATGIRL, GRIFTER, NIGHTWING, RED HOOD & THE OUTLAWS and TEEN TITANS - all of us in the editorial department have cringed and laughed over the speculation from the comics community at large.

Well, that general cry of "What the hell are they doing over at DC?" was answered two months ago at the launch, and here in month three I'm happy to report we've gotten into a nice groove with all the books - grooving on the excitement generated by new and old readers alike. There's an amazing new energy emanating from the editorial offices. We're talking about the books together, admiring what's being done better and what's being done BEST.

Just out of this week from my office are two books I'm particularly proud of - BATGIRL #3 and GRIFTER #3. Gail Simone and Ardian Syaf have crafted a wonderfully personal story in BATGIRL, giving you a hint of Batgirl's past and her continuing struggles as a recovering paraplegic. And in GRIFTER, Nathan Edmondson and CAFU are creating a whole new world for the Grifter, filled with aliens and humans who all want the same thing: to get him, alive or dead. Including his own family, in this case. I hope the spotlights above and below will tempt you to pick up both books, if you haven't planned to already.
