DC Comics All Access: Bob Harras

And so we come to Week Four–marking the end of September, the month that ushered in the debut of DC Comics-The New 52 and the unprecedented transformation of the entire DC Universe. It’s hard to believe we’re finally here because for us September started a long time ago. Let me explain:

It’s been quite a ride since the writers conference that initiated this evolution. It’s been a year of pitch meetings, story conferences and design sessions that often went far into the night. It’s been a year of hard work on everyone’s part and truth be told – it’s been a lot of fun.

One of my favorite aspects of this period was our weekly New 52 editorial meeting. Every Friday, all of us in DC Editorial—me, our Executive Editor Eddie Berganza, VP Art Direction & Design Mark Chiarello, Coordinating Editor Liz Gehrlein, Group Editors Matt Idelson and Mike Marts, Senior Editors Bobbie Chase and Joey Cavalieri, Editors Pat McCallum, Brian Cunningham and Rachel Gluckstern, Associate Editors Janelle Asselin, Harvey Richards, Rex Ogle, Wil Moss, Chris Conroy and Assistant Editors Sean Mackiewicz, Katie Kubert, Kate Stewart, Darren Shan and Rickey Purdin—would assemble in our conference room for a two-hour gathering (complete with pizza—any cholesterol concerns temporarily forgotten) not to discuss schedules, or production concerns (these we saved for other meetings)—but to share. Everyone came to that meeting with whatever new material had excited them: whether it was a new script, new art from one of the titles, new designs or new logo concepts. It allowed everybody to see what was being used to build The New 52. Pages would be passed around, discussions would ensue—but most of all, excitement would build.

As that excitement built I was constantly reminded that comics are unique. Unlike movies, or TV, or even video games, comics have no budgetary restraints. A writer and an artist working together as a team can move you from the banality of an office in a major American metropolis to the heart of a dying planet from one page to the next. They can bring characters you care passionately about to places that cannot possibly exist except in the realm of imagination…or in comics.

It is that blend of story and art—that sense of wonder—that you will see in such titles as AQUAMAN by Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis, or TEEN TITANS by Scott Lobdell and Brett Booth or THE FLASH by Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato. These are only three examples of the excitement we can finally share with you as part of the New 52.

September may be ending (longest September ever)—but for The New 52 and for DC Comics, trust me, things are only getting started…

See you in October,

Bob Harras – Editor in Chief

From Lost to International

Last year I found myself editing a little bi-weekly called GENERATION LOST. When it landed in my lap, I was suddenly transported back to being an eight-year-old in an airport in Chicago when I was traveling on my own to see my dad in North Dakota. I had five bucks in my pocket and I picked up my first JLI (that’s JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL for you folks that aren’t in the know). I remember being like, “Holy cow! Comics are filled with action and comedy? No way!”

When GEN LOST ended and talks of DC Comics-The New 52 emerged, I had high hopes that this wouldn’t be the last time these heroes would work together. I mean, here we have this team of misfit heroes that the world considers jokes—but the truth is, they save the world again and again. And sure enough, even after the world changed in FLASHPOINT #5, these heroes have been brought back together by fate along with some newbies …

The ever-loved Booster Gold returns, leading a team of U.N. sponsored heroes including the likes of a Brazilian called Fire, a total powerhouse in the rocky exterior of August-General-in-Iron, the snobbish crazy-haired Godiva (remember her from FLASHPOINT: LOIS LANE & THE RESISTANCE?), the always impressive Batman, Green Lantern Guy Gardner and others. This team is in for some hurt in their first story arc, but I’m glad to be a part of it. Hope you’re ready for action and adventure and a few laughs along the way.

JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL #1 is in stores now. And in case you haven’t picked up your copy yet, check out this sneak preview.

“So this is what dying is like …”

Traci 13 has teleported all over the world trying to recruit help to stop her father from launching a satellite targeted to kill 118 million people. But upon returning home, she made the shocking discovery that she was not the only person in her family left with magical abilities. As Traci’s father taps into dark magic to prevent his daughter from sabotaging his plan, Traci is left with no choice but to martyr herself in a last attempt to stop him. Has Traci’s dad crossed so far over to the side of evil that he’d let his daughter die to exact his revenge on the world?

FLASHPOINT: THE WORLD OF FLASHPOINT #3, on sale next week, is written by Rex Ogle and features art by Eduardo Francisco.

But when Xanadu’s immortality has reached its end, Traci is left stranded. Teleporting from continent to continent, she only has a matter of time to follow Xanadu’s clues and find the guidance she needs to stop her father’s plan.

FLASHPOINT FRIDAY: “The stakes involved? About 118 million lives.” – Rex Ogle

flsp_wf_cv2THE SOURCE: In issue one of the WORLD OF FLASHPOINT, we see the impact of the war on real world locations including Paris and New York. Why focus on those cities?

REX OGLE: I came up with three visuals that I thought nailed the social climate of a world on the edge of a terrible war. I picked Paris, because I wanted to show some mass destruction on the frontlines, and it’s a place people are familiar with (from movies and TV, if not first hand). Same with NYC—it’s iconic.

Also, I thought if the world were ending, how would people act on these streets I call home?

Will the series also explore DC Universe cities like Gotham and Metropolis?

REX: Metropolis and Gotham both get a lot of love in PROJECT: SUPERMAN and BATMAN: KNIGHT OF VENGEANCE (respectively), so I aimed for a more global tour of the world. After all, it is called WORLD OF FLASHPOINT. But Traci 13 does touch down in Gotham and finds a very unexpected ally.

Issue 2 expands the scope of the series even further, as Traci 13 travels around the world to Africa, Asia, and North America and South America.

REX: Don’t forget Australia, Antartica, and Europe! Traci 13 travels to every continent. But it’s not about the locations so much as the people she meets along the way. Expect plenty of cameos.

wofp2-3What area of the world has been the most impacted by the war between Aquaman and Wonder Woman?

REX: The entire planet has been affected by the Amazon-Atlantean feud, though none quite as deeply as Europe.

What, if anything, can you tell us about the global council that makes up H.I.V.E.?

REX: Hmmm, there's a scientist, a dictator, a madman, and of course a very scary kid. Who doesn’t love a creepy kid?

I really scored some rad cameos, drawing deep from the massive well of DCU characters and put together people I thought might be brought together under these kinds of dire circumstances.

wofppg8What made Traci 13 the right protagonist for this series?

REX: Here’s this young girl with an immense amount of power at her fingertips, but she doesn’t quite know how to use it in the beginning and it causes her to lose her family. I think anyone can relate to not being smart enough as a kid and making mistakes.

Also, her last name is “13”. I still think that’s cool.

Are any of the characters in THE WORLD OF FLASHPOINT actually better off than the versions we have known in the DC Universe?

REX: Wow. Great question. (No comment.)

The action in THE WORLD OF FLASHPOINT may well bring dire consequences to the world's population. Just how big of a threat is set in motion in the first issue?

REX: Hmmm. The stakes involved? About 118 million lives, including pretty much all of our fave heroes and villains. And to think, Traci is only 15 years old. NO pressure.

FLASHPOINT FRIDAY: A Map of the World of Flashpoint

flashpoint-logo_white

In a world where everything you know will change in a flash, it might help to have a map. Luckily for us, thanks to writer Rex Ogle and artist Freddie E. Williams II, readers now have just that: a map of the world of FLASHPOINT.

flashpointmapv6

The United Kingdom? That’s now New Themsycira, home base to the Amazons.

Pirate Trade Routes? You’ll see those explored in FLASHPOINT issue 2 and FLASHPOINT: DEATHSTROKE AND THE CURSE OF THE RAVAGER.

Inspired by this map, today’s edition of FLASHPOINT FRIDAY will provide a look at the world building of FLASHPOINT. Check back throughout the day for interviews about the global conflict at the heart of the story.

In the meantime, take another look at that map. Euro-Refugee Camps? A Nazi occupied Brazil? A World Without the World’s Greatest Superheroes certainly turned out differently.

FLASHPOINT MONDAY?

flspv2_cv1_2ndprinting7

Each week, THE SOURCE's ongoing FLASHPOINT FRIDAY feature is *the* destination for FLASHPOINT news. Continue to check out THE SOURCE every Friday throughout this summer.

And yet sometimes there's FLASHPOINT news on a Monday that won't hold til Friday. Today, for instance, we've got breaking news: FLASHPOINT issue one has already sold out.

Congrats to Geoff Johns, Andy Kubert, Sandra Hope, Nick Napolitano, Adam Schlagman, Rex Ogle and Eddie Berganza.

If you haven't already picked up issue one and you're wondering what everyone is talking about, head on over to GAWKER's i09 interview with Geoff Johns that was posted over the weekend. Geoff discusses all things FLASHPOINT, including Cyborg's relevance to the series--and the modern world. "The truth is, we're all cyborgs with cell phones and online identities. He's a hero who plugged in 24/7 and constantly in touch with technology and information. He's a product of the day, he really is the twenty-first century everyman."

FLASHPOINT FRIDAY: Traci must find the strength to stop her father ...

FLASH FACT: As the war between Amazons and Atlanteans rages on the battlefield around her, Traci must find the strength to stop her father before he rips the world asunder.
