Talking GREEN LANTERN #21 With Robert Venditti

Following the thrilling conclusion of writer Geoff Johns’ historic near-decade run on GREEN LANTERN with this month’s issue #20, the acclaimed and New York Times bestselling series will be going in an all-new exciting new direction with the introduction of the new creative team of writer Robert Venditti and artist Billy Tan.

So where will we find protagonist Hal Jordan at the start of the series’ new story arc in GREEN LANTERN #21?

“In some ways, he’ll have more power than he ever has before, and that’s not necessarily a good thing,” Venditti said to IFANBOY. “Hal is the type of guy who flies alone in a fighter jet. He isn’t a platoon leader. He has never asked for nor wanted to be a leader, to have others on the hook for his decisions and actions. Being a hero and being a leader are two separate things, and Hal’s about to learn that the hard way.”

“It’s a really ambitious story. We are not coming out of the gate playing it safe. We are taking a lot of risks and hopefully people will respond in a positive way,” the writer continued to tease to AIN’T IT COOL NEWS.

As for Relic, the Green Lantern universe’s all-new villain who we introduced in our “What’s New In The New 52” column? Well, according to a recent conversation between Venditti and MTV GEEK, he’ll “tie together every Lantern of every color that has ever appeared in any comic book ever.” Now there’s an entrance! And don’t forget to check out Rags Morales’ variant covers for all the Green Lantern family titles this summer, as each one will show part of Relic’s origin story before being collected with new pages and full color/lettering in the series’ September issue.

GREEN LANTERN #21 lands in stores on June 5th.

MTV GEEK Announces Relic-Focused GREEN LANTERN Family Variant Covers

Last week, GREEN LANTERN fans got their first sneak peek at the upcoming all-new villain, Relic.

Today, MTV GEEK exclusively announced that Relic’s origin story will begin to be told in the form of a series of black & white variant covers across all of the “Green Lantern” family of titles from June through August. Drawn by Rags Morales (ACTION COMICS), these variant covers will all give clues to how Relic came to be, and will be collected – fully lettered, in color, and with additional new pages – in the series’ September issue.

“When you very first encounter him, he will be a fully formed menace, but you will get the backstory of how he got to be that way,” GREEN LANTERN writer Robert Venditti revealed to MTV GEEK about Relic. “He’s a completely new character not based on any pre-existing character.”

As for the impact Relic will have on the Green Lantern universe? According to Venditti, he will “tie together every Lantern of every color that has ever appeared in any comic book ever.” Talk about a big bad!

DC Comics unveils latest addition to The New 52 - CONSTANTINE

John Constantine has been a constant presence in the pages of DC Comics, having first appeared in SWAMP THING in the 1980s and up through his current adventures in the pages of JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK, ANIMAL MAN and SWORD OF SORCERY.

Now, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS announced this morning that the chain-smoking British occult detective will headline his own ongoing comic book series as part of DC Comics-The New 52.

Launching in March 2013, CONSTANTINE will be written by upcoming DEMON KNIGHTS writer and New York Times bestselling author of The Homeland Directive and the sci-fi graphic novel series The Surrogates, Robert Venditti, with incredible art by Renato Guedes (SUPERMAN).

"Few characters in comics are as complex and entertaining as John Constantine, and I'm finding him to be every bit as enjoyable to write as he is to read," says Venditti. "It's my goal to have the new CONSTANTINE series be equal parts familiarity and surprise.  This will be the Constantine we all know and love, but facing new and unexpected challenges from both inside and out."

HELLBLAZER, Vertigo's longest-running series which currently headlines John Constantine, will end with issue #300 in February. John Constantine has escaped, cheated, narrowly avoided and even reversed death on multiple occasions. Now, in the conclusion of “Death and Cigarettes,” longtime writer Peter Milligan and artists Giuseppe Camuncoli and Stefano Landini will test whether he’s got one more second chance in him, giving him the bloody best sendoff he deserves.

Announcing the New DEMON KNIGHTS Writer

Attention DEMON KNIGHTS fans! Beginning next year, the epic medieval series will have a new writer: Robert Venditti (X-O MANOWAR; THE SURROGATES).

Kicking off with issue #16, Venditti’s storyline begins thirty years since the Demon Knights last rode together – and they’re less than happy to see each other. What has happened during this time? Who lives? Who’s dead? Who’s going to stop the massive vampire invasion that threatens all life? The Demon Knights had better find some answers fast!

“With DEMON KNIGHTS, writer Paul Cornell built a rich world and populated it with unique characters that any writer would want to get their hands on. Add to that a chance for me to work with artist Bernard Chang, and it was really a no-brainer. When editor Chris Conroy reached out to me, my first thought was, where do I sign?” Venditti told THE SOURCE.

“DEMON KNIGHTS is unlike any other series on the stands, and I’m going to do my best to continue that,” the writer continued. “For the next few issues, readers will find the team—if such a disparate band of misfits can be called a “team”—battling an enemy that reaches far back into the history of the DC Universe. And it’s going to be a battle from which everyone will emerge changed in profound ways.”

DEMON KNIGHTS #16 hits stores on January 16, 2013.
