This Just Happened: Fury's Identity Is Revealed

SPOILER ALERT: If you have not read EARTH 2 #8 and do not wish to know what happens, stop reading this post now (major spoilers ahead!)

Last month, writer James Robinson told you a little bit about EARTH 2 #8 and teased the issue’s significance for the series. Then, you got your first look at Fury, Steppenwolf’s female champion. But what is the mystery behind her origin?

After his failed invasion of the planet that lead to the death of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, Steppenwolf has gone into hiding on Earth. While in hiding, he seeks refuge in Dherain, a country ruled by King Marov. But little does Steppenwolf know, Marov plans on turning him in for a profit.

Luckily, Steppenwolf brought Fury along for protection. But who is she? Where did she come from? As Fury easily defeats all of Marov’s guards, Steppenwolf reveals she is not from Apokolips … but from Earth!

Taken, from her mother and trained to be his champion, Fury is a master in the ways of Apokolips combat and is from the finest warrior bloodline in the world. Steppenwolf claims that her mother was the greatest of all the Amazonians, so Fury can only be one person: the daughter of Wonder Woman!

Together, Steppenwolf and Fury create an unstoppable force capable of conquering the entire country of Dherain and slaughtering King Marov. But weeks later, as he sits on his new throne, Steppenwolf realizes what he truly wants. Not just one country, but the entire world! But will Fury be the one to help the man who murdered her mother achieve this goal of global domination?

Below, take a look at Steppenwolf’s reveal of Fury’s true identity. Will the daughter of one of Earth’s greatest heroes become its greatest villain? Place your bets in the comments section below and keep reading EARTH 2 to see what happens next!

EARTH 2 #8, in stores now, is written by James Robinson and illustrated by Yildiray Cinar, Ryan Winn and Ruy Jose.

THE BREAKDOWN: Masters of the Universe Character Designs

It might not be quite as exciting as being granted the power to transform into an undefeatable warrior, but it’s still a pretty cool time to be a He-Man and the Masters of the Universe fan. Just over a week ago, we launched a new digital first Masters of the Universe series, which debuted with a chapter written by Geoff Johns and drawn by Howard Porter and John Livesay. But that’s just the start. Tomorrow marks the debut of HE-MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE #1, the first issue in a six-issue miniseries that’s written by James Robinson and drawn by Philip Tan and Ruy Jose.

Both He-Man comics feature some of your favorite Masters of the Universe heroes and villains, brought to life by some truly amazing artists. But as with most comics, the road to the finished page is paved with many sketchbook pages of thumbnails, rough concepts and character designs. Often, these early images are just as intriguing as what winds up on the page.

To celebrate the launch of the new comics, we thought it would be fun to take a look at some early Philip Tan designs created for our Masters of the Universe comics. How different are they from what ended up in the comic? Be sure to pick up or download the first issue tomorrow to find out!

Preview Mondays: HE-MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE #1 and SWEET TOOTH #35

For this week’s installment of Preview Mondays, we’re giving you exclusive first looks at HE-MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE #1 and SWEET TOOTH #35.

Originally launched in the early 1980’s, HE-MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE returns this July as a new six-issue miniseries. In the inaugural issue (on sale this Wednesday), Skeletor has rewritten all of Eternia's history. Now a scrawny and simple woodsman caring for his ailing father, Adam (a.k.a. He-Man) is haunted by dreams of his past glory. With the help of his hawk, Zoar, he decides to set out on a journey to rediscover his rightful destiny. But which of Skeletor’s henchmen is waiting to stop him before he can begin his quest? HE-MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE #1 is written by James Robinson and features artwork by Philip Tan, Ruy Jose and LeBeau Underwood. Click here to see an exclusive preview of the issue.

In SWEET TOOTH #35, Dr. Singh arrives in Alaska where the plague that decimated the world started. What will he discover about the origins of Gus, the plague and the hybrid children? And once he’s at the laboratory that started it all, what other secrets will he uncover? The Mysteries of SWEET TOOTH begin to reveal themselves as the exciting series conclusion draws near! SWEET TOOTH #35 goes on sale this week and is written and illustrated by Jeff Lemire. Click here to see an exclusive preview of the issue.

New Masters of the Universe® Series Slated for July

He-Man fans rejoice! An all-new comic book series chronicling HE-MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE will be released starting in July, and offer an entirely new take on the storied warrior who celebrates his 30th anniversary this year.  The six issue, limited series is written by James Robinson, with pencils by Phillip Tan and inks from Ruy Jose.

In the new series, Robinson reintroduces the Masters of the Universe® to comic readers with Skeletor having won a major victory and rewriting the world of Eternia where he now rules from Castle Grayskull and the Masters have no memory of their former glory. Adam is a simple woodsman haunted by dreams of a heroic warrior, wielding a powerful sword in battle. He is found by a mysterious sorceress who tells him his dreams are of the way the world should be, that he is Eternia's champion He-Man. Adam sets off on a quest to regain his power and reawaken the Masters of the Universe.

Everyone’s Talkin’ About DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, Monday Evening (ET) Edition

All afternoon, THE SOURCE has been rolling out your very first look at DC Comics in February 2012.

February still seems a long ways off. But this Wednesday? That's right around the corner and we've got a whole new batch of third issues from DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 hitting stores. For ease of reading, we've compiled a comprehensive rundown. Tell your friends.

USA TODAY interviewed writer Brian Azzarello to accompany their exclusive preview of WONDER WOMAN #3, in which Diana’s new origins are revealed. "I can't wait to start really, really playing with the gods," Azzarello told them. "Look who she's immediately gaining as siblings — suddenly, the god of war is her half-brother … Now instead of protecting a mortal from the gods, she's also protecting her half-brother or sister."

POPMATTERS has your first look at I, VAMPIRE #3. “I, VAMPIRE is mythic in every way,” POPMATTERS wrote of the series. “It is the story of how the whole world is threatened by a love story that just darkens the character of each individual involved in that poisoned relationship. In some of the finest storytelling ever to grace the character of Andrew and his struggles with Mary, Josh Fialkov singularizes the character and the title among the recent crop of DC’s New 52. It is very much the evolution of the romantic vampire’s we’ve come to enjoy seeing on screen over recent years.”

MAXIM previewed DC UNIVERSE PRESENTS #3. The issue by Paul Jenkins and Bernard Chang continues Deadman’s journey of self exploration as he attempts to gain answers on how to gain control of his “life.”

Now that he’s bonded with his armor, can Jaime Reyes learn how to control it? Find out in BLUE BEETLE #3 by Tony Bedard, Ig Guara, Ruy Jose and J.P. Mayer, previewed exclusively at MTV GEEK.

It’s time for a fourth team member in BIRDS OF PREY #3! Head on over to COMIC BOOK RESOURCES for your exclusive preview.

With the Intruders neutralizing the ring powers of the Green Lantern Corps, it’ll be up to Guy Gardner and John Stewart to figure out how to stop this grave threat. Check out IFANBOY’s exclusive preview of GREEN LANTERN CORPS #3 by Peter J. Tomasi, Geraldo Borges and Scott Hanna.

IGN previewed Selina Kyle’s latest adventures in CATWOMAN #3. What trouble has the femme fatale got herself into this time? Find out when the issue by Judd Winick and Guillem March hits stores this week.

Following their exclusive preview of LEGION LOST #3 last week, TOR.COM has your first look at LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #3 by Paul Levitz and Francis Portela.

And that's not all. DISCOVER MAGAZINE highlighted the science in MISTER TERRIFIC in DC COMICS-THE NEW 52.

What else is going on the internet?

ADVERTISING AGE presented a 2011 Media Vanguard Award to the BURN NOTICE digital comic for “Most Innovating Broadcast Brand Extension.” (Congratulations to all those involved with the book!)

Meanwhile, BATMAN: NOEL writer and artist Lee Bermejo was interviewed by YAHOO! ASSOCIATED CONTENT. “I like a very ‘urban warfare’ look for my Batman,” Bermejo said of The Dark Knight’s costume design in the book. “I suppose it comes from my overall need to ground things in as much reality as possible. I like to approach all design from the inside out, trying to figure out what fabrics could be used to make the thing IF it were really being constructed. I wanted there to be a point to Batman having this more modern, utilitarian look. It fit in well with what I wanted to do in the story.”

“The idea for the project pretty much came when I had finished Joker,” Bermejo continued to THE MORTON REPORT. “And I had a blast drawing Joker. I really enjoyed it. But it was a really dark, brutal piece of work, and I kind of wanted to go in the other direction. To push myself creatively, but also to try something new.”

Finally, COMICVINE listed four reasons why Sinestro is the most powerful Green Lantern.

And speaking of Green Lantern, check out Francis Manapul’s breathtaking variant cover for next month’s issue #4. Amazing, right?

To be continued …

FLASHPOINT FRIDAY: “It’s about not being afraid of change.”

flashpoint-logo_whiteAfter a savage attack on his company that left him as a sole survivor, Oliver Queen is haunted by the final words of Roy, one of his closest friends: “You have it in you to do something inspiring, Ollie, and I’m going to watch you do it.”

While he seeks out a mysterious female raider he caught on camera during the attack, Oliver can’t help but wonder about the potential of his Green Arrow Industries. Can he fulfill Roy’s dreams of turning his corporation itself into a superhero? What would it take for a big business to not only fight for people but also inspire them?

“One of the (many, many, MANY) cool things Geoff has going on in FLASHPOINT is that for all the epic superhero moments, at its heart is a story about people dealing with change,” said Pornsak Pichetshote. “And, I don’t know, it seems like that’s the undercurrent of every major news story right now. Plus, from his hard-hitting heroes days, hasn’t Green Arrow had its roots in using cool superhero action to comment on the world? So why not keep that tradition going in a story that involves blood, super-weapons and archery?”

FLASHPOINT: GREEN ARROW INDUSTRIES is written by Pornsak Pichetshote and features art by Marco Castiello, Ig Guara, Vincenzo Acunzo, and Ruy Jose, and arrives in stores next week. Head over to COMIC BOOK RESOURCES to view exclusive preview pages.

Why? Writer Sean Ryan, penciller Ig Guara and inker Ruy Jose answer this question by bringing us a twisted character study of a great, if restless, criminal mind in the FLASHPOINT: GRODD OF WAR one-shot, on sale tomorrow.
