MTV GEEK sits down with DC Entertainment’s Co-Publishers, Jim Lee and Dan DiDio

During San Diego Comic Con, MTV GEEK sat down with DC Entertainment’s Co-Publishers Jim Lee and Dan DiDio to discuss DC Comics-The New 52.

“What we really wanted to do is shake up the business,” said DiDio. “What we’re doing is launching 52 new titles and not only that, but it’s a brand new take, a brand new view and brand new ideal behind our characters. What we’re hoping to do is energize our fanbase, our existing fans and bring in new fans.”

Head on over to MTV GEEK to check out the full interview, where Jim and Dan talk about everything from costumes to digital day-and-date to why 52 titles are being launched at the same time.

Buzz for DC Comics-The New 52 has everybody talking

San Diego Comic-Con has come and gone but everyone is still buzzing from all of the teases about and sneak peeks of DC Comics-The New 52. There was a ton of coverage out there but we thought we’d highlight some of the most interesting coverage.

CATWOMAN writer Judd Winick caught up with MTV GEEK about bringing the ultimate feline fatale Selina Kyle back to the forefront of her own ongoing series and returning her to the fundamentals of her character’s origins. “We're getting back to the essence of what Catwoman is. She's smart. She's addicted to the danger,” Winick said. “She likes stealing things.”

DC Entertainment Co-Publisher and JUSTICE LEAGUE artist Jim Lee stepped on board COMIC BOOK RESOURCES’ boat to chat with Kiel Phegley about everything from DC Comics-The New 52 to the impact of digital comics to his previous works to his creative process. “The first issue really starts with the genesis of Justice League and it focuses on Batman and his interactions and his relationship with Green Lantern,” Jim Lee said of JUSTICE LEAGUE. “It’s really a character-based storyline,” he continued.

Jim also joined his DC Entertainment Co-Publisher Dan DiDio for an interview with CNN. “What we are doing right now,” said DiDio, “is fighting for the soul of comics.”

Gail Simone and Ethan Van Sciver were interviewed by NEWSARAMA about their unlikely collaboration and why THE FURY OF FIRESTORM will be one of your new favorite books. “This is the ground floor of one of the most compelling books I've ever been involved with,” Gail said. Newsarama also has an exclusive new page from THE FURY OF FIRESTORM #2 that gives readers a glimpse of what the Firestorm team will be up against this fall.

SUPERGIRL artist Mahmud Asrar chatted with iFanboy about his favorite SUPERGIRL covers and chatted about his artistic process in drawing new covers for Kara in DC Comics-The New 52. “The collar and cape give her a sort of a regal and alien look which goes along great with her Kryptonian roots,” Mahmud said of Supergirl’s new look.

If you missed it, THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER ran the first exclusive preview of AQUAMAN #1. “It’s going to have humor and majesty,” Jim Lee told them of the book.

“I love the quirky nature of the side characters,” O.M.A.C. series writer Dan DiDio told Gawker’s iO9. “In this particular case, we're telling a story of loss of personal control. OMAC is about a man named Kevin Kho. He's very controlling of his orderly life, a little OCD. He becomes OMAC and is led by Brother Eye's machinations, and he's struggling to regain access to his own life. Every time he does gain a little bit, it's ripped away from him.”

SANDMAN mastermind Neil Gaiman sat down with ACTION COMICS writer Grant Morrison with ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY to have a conversation about his new book, Supergods, and both of their loves and legacies within the comic book industry. “If it wasn’t for being slightly mad, neither of us would do what we do, or be willing to take seriously the ideas that we take seriously and then watch as they wander out into the world,” Gaiman joked.

As industry watchers know, there was also a lot of dialogue last week about the appearance of Batgirl at the DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 panels at SDCC. If you haven’t already seen it, the Co-Publishers posted a blog post about this issue on Friday. As with the coverage above, we recommend taking a look, if you haven’t already.

Wonder Woman watercolor by Jill Thompson As Seen at SDCC

The talented writer/artist Jill Thompson (Deliruim's Party: A Little Endless Story Book, Sandman) took to the stage in the DC Entertainment Booth on the last day of the San Diego Comic-Convention and awed the crowd with her rendition of Wonder Woman.

In a step by step process the crowd intensely watched as Jill transformed a blank piece of paper into the gorgeous image below, which she graciously signed and gave to a fan that had the closest birth date to hers.

Some of the other veteran artists who showed their craft throughout the weekend were: Mark Buckingham (FABLES), Francis Manapul (FLASH), and Cully Hamner (RED, BLUE BEETLE), and Jim Lee (JUSTICE LEAGUE).

Well, it's done. Another San Diego Comic-Con in the books.

We met so many fantastic fans (many of whom got Wayne Casino Poker Chips and an assortment of our other fantastic giveaway items) and want to thank them all for their feedback, their comments, their questions and most of all their passion. You all are the reason we keep doing what we're doing and seeing so many assembled in one place is a great experience for all of us here.

The centerpiece of Sunday's panel lineup was the last of a series dedicated to "Designing the New DC Comics." This time the big reveal given to those in the room (and then to those who are friends of ours on Facebook) were looks at the new designs characters will be sporting after September. From BATGIRL to MISTER TERRIFIC to GRIFTER and more, the new outfits and overall looks of the characters was on display and the response was great.

After that the last in a series of panels focusing on DC Comics The New 52 was held and new villains for BATGIRL, FLASH, SUPERGIRL, and FIRESTORM were discussed

The focus then turned back to artwork with a panel featuring Jim Lee, Cully Hammer and Adam Hughes as they shared how they do their artistic work month after month.

And that's that! We'll continue to share in more detail some of the news that came out of Comic-Con but thanks to everyone for another great year. Look for us on Facebook and Twitter to keep up with DC Entertainment day in and day out.

DC Entertainment - SDCC Day Two Recap

Day Two of San Diego Comic-Con is officially in the books! The excitement at our booth was overflowing as people lined up for their chance to become part of the Justice League and attendees continue to collect Wayne Casino Poker Chips both at the booth and at panels where they ask great questions.

After that we held the second DC Comics The New 52 panel of SDCC, where the entire editorial team was assembled, giving people information on timelines, costume design and other topics related to September’s big event.

One of the highlights of the day, though, was our DC Comics Superman panel, where the creative team showed off exclusive new artwork reveals from Superman, Action Comics, Supergirl and Superboy. Also shown was brand new artwork from the upcoming Superman: Earth One graphic novel. Fans of our Facebook page also got an exclusive look at three videos featuring Grant Morrison talking about Superman and what makes the character special to him.

More exclusive artwork reveals were part of the DC Comics Justice League panel. New pages and panels were shown from not just the core team book but also the individual titles for the characters in the JL, including Green Arrow, Mister Terrific and others.

Once again the day ended with good stuff from Vertigo Comics, this time a panel devoted to American Vampire. Attendees were given previews of upcoming artwork and story arcs as well as an introduction to the mythology behind the series and the vampires featured in it.
