DC Entertainment - SDCC Day One Recap

It doesn't matter if you're returning for your umpteenth visit or a first timer: The first day of the San Diego Comic-Con is sure to get you excited. Seeing so many talented and creative people - both the talent on hand and the people in attendance - in one place is truly a very cool experience.

DC Entertainment got SDCC off with a bang not unlike a certain speedster makes when breaking the sound barrier. On the Flashpoint panel yesterday morning there were art previews and revelations about how the end of FLASHPOINT bridges into DC Comics The New 52.

After that, appropriately, the attention turned to September's launch of DC Comics The New 52 as Dan DiDio and others took the stage to talk about what this whole new starting point for the DC Universe means and they revealed new artwork from the upcoming books.

After that the attention turned to September's launch of DC Comics The New 52 as Dan DiDio and others took the stage to talk about what this whole new starting point for the DC Universe means and they revealed new artwork from the upcoming books.

Batman also got his turn in the spotlight later that day as the entire Bat-related editorial team got together in Room 6DE to discuss what was happening in Gotham City and the characters that live there, with more exclusive new artwork being shown and other information shared with those in attendance. Also on the Batman front was a panel featuring Jim Lee on the upcoming Batman: Arkham City video game.

We shared background on current and future plans for the DC Direct line of consumer products, including a reveal of the new JUSTICE LEAGUE action figures - stop by the DC Entertainment booth to check them out.

As promised we've been handing out $100 Wayne Casino poker chips to those who ask particularly interesting questions at DC Comics panels.

Don't forget: If you want to be the first to hear about news breaking from the San Diego Comic-Con make sure you're following DC Comics on Facebook, where we're sharing exclusive artwork and more "You heard it here first" news. SUPERMAN FLYS SOLO, LOIS LANE RIDES HIGH WITH NEW LOVE IN DC COMICS—THE NEW 52

Today at 3:00 pm PST, DC Comics will host a Superman news panel in room Room 6DE, which will provide Comic-Con attendees with a sneak peek at what they can expect to see in September and beyond. To give fans on-site and around the world a chance to follow the news, DC Comics will be live tweeting the news from the @DC_NATION Twitter handle, as well as posting updates to the DC Comics Facebook page.

Clark Kent is a bachelor, Lois Lane is dating a hunky new co-worker and the sky's the limit for her career as the new boss of the Daily Planet's TV and New media department. The Daily Planet is under new ownership, as the paper has been purchased by a global media conglomerate. Looks like things in Metropolis just got a whole lot more interesting, as Superman news continues to turn heads at Comic-Con 2011.

"A lot of the buzz we've seen in the press and online has been Superman-focused," said Jim Lee, Co-Publisher at DC Entertainment. "We're really excited for fans to see this take on Lois in September. This character has always been a successful modern woman and her new role at the DAILY PLANET opens up dramatic new story possibilities."

Today's Comic-Con panel will cap off a busy week fit for the Daily Planet, which included news breaks on Clark Kent and his changed relationship status with Lois Lane, the cover reveal for “Action Comics” issue one, the release of Grant Morrison's acclaimed book, Supergods and the reveal of the new love interest who has Lois Lane's heart, Daily Planet co-worker Jonathan Carroll.

“We're bringing a fresh perspective, both physically and emotionally to Superman,” said Dan DiDio, Co-Publisher at DC Entertainment. “In addition to life as a bachelor, Clark Kent has to adjust to Perry White having a new boss and a new status quo at the DAILY PLANET.”

“August 31st is just the beginning” – Eddie Berganza: How FLASHPOINT #5 leads into DC Comics-The New 52

On August 31st, the fifth and final installment of Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert’s bestselling series, FLASHPOINT, hits stores. That day will also see the launch of DC Comics-The New 52, with the release of Geoff Johns and Jim Lee’s JUSTICE LEAGUE #1.

During today’s FLASHPOINT panel at San Diego Comic-Con, it was announced that in order to transition into this exciting and historic new era for the comic book industry, FLASHPOINT #5 will provide a bridge that will lead to DC Comics-The New 52.

“When FLASHPOINT started, we said ‘everything you know will change in a flash!’” said FLASHPOINT editor and DC Entertainment Executive Editor, Eddie Berganza. “Look through FLASHPOINT as well as the various mini-series and you start to get a hint at what that change means with DC Comics-The New 52! And with FLASHPOINT #5, you will clearly see how it all comes about … and we give you other things to ponder as the DC Comics-The New 52 start to come out. August 31st is just the beginning!”

“Each decade, these characters represent our own best idea of what we'd like to be.” – Grant Morrison

As part of their extensive coverage of San Diego Comic-Con this week, USA TODAY has posted an article about the evolution of super-heroes. Specifically, how the evolution of super-heroes at this year’s convention are reflections of the times and society we currently live in.

“Each decade, these characters represent our own best idea of what we'd like to be, our own big idea," contributed ACTION COMICS and Supergods writer Grant Morrison. When discussing Superman’s new image, Grant said, “There's a reason why he's dressed in the jeans and the T-shirt and he's Bruce Springsteen Superman. That was the look I wanted to get back, of a genuine working-class hero … You do become a little bit better by trying to imagine what it must be like to think like Superman.”

Check out USA TODAY for the full coverage.
