This Just Happened: The Oracle Awakens

SPOILER ALERT: If you have not read SUPERMAN #16 yet and do not wish to know what happens, stop reading this post now (major spoiler alerts ahead!)

From the creative team of writer Scott Lobdell and artist Kenneth Rocafort, SUPERMAN #16 serves as the next chapter of “H’el On Earth,” a crossover event taking place in SUPERMAN, SUPERBOY and SUPERGIRL that unites all of the Super Family for the first time in DC COMICS – THE NEW 52 and puts them into battle with the maniacal alien, H’el, who will stop at nothing to bring back Krypton from extinction … even at the expense of Earth!

In “H’el On Earth,” Superman has come face to face with his worst nightmare: a creature of unknown Kryptonian origin who is not only more powerful than the Man of Steel, but smarter than Supergirl and more lethal than Superboy. H’el claims to be a space explorer sent on a mission by Jor-el (a.k.a. Superman’s dad) to safeguard the accumulated science and culture of Krypton aboard his ship when the destruction of his home planet became imminent. As a result of his intense travels through space, H’el has been transformed and now remains a grotesque version of who he used to be. But when all hope seems lost, he discovers the existence of two lost children of Krypton living on Earth: Superman and Supergirl.

Upon his arrival on Earth, H’el reaches out to ask for Superman and Supergirl’s assistance in the resurrection of their home planet. During their disastrous first meeting, H’el produces a prisoner to prove his knowledge of Krypton and its controversial past — a clone like the ones that nearly destroyed the planet years ago: Superboy!

H’el attempts to kill Superboy in order to gain the trust of Superman and almost succeeds! As Superboy’s life hangs by a thread, the Man of Steel leaves Metropolis and H’el to take him to the Fortress of Solitude. There, he gives Superboy his personal Kryptonian battle armor to help him heal from his injuries.

As Superboy recovers, H’el banishes them from the Fortress of Solitude and takes Supergirl on a tour of the bottle city of Kandor in order to gain her trust and allegiance. Afterwards, he succeeds more than he could ever dream when Supergirl decides to become romantically involved with him! Just in case you missed the beginnings of their blossoming relationship, click here to find out what happened!

With H’el and Supergirl alone in his fortress plotting the resurrection of Krypton, Superman decides that the problem is too big for one hero to handle and calls in some friends: The Justice League! Upon the arrival of the League, Superman and Superboy lead an assault on the Fortress of Solitude.

After being thrown through alternate dimensions and witnessing the full array of power at H’el’s disposal, Superman and his allies finally gain entrance to the fortress … but it’s too late! H’el’s plan has been set into motion and a power unlike any other is unleashed upon the planet. It seems like the end for everyone on Earth – and a new beginning for Krypton!

Meanwhile in the far reaches of space, a powerful entity awakens: The Oracle. He serves one purpose and one purpose only: to bear witness to the end of a world. Could this really the end for Earth? And can Krypton really be brought back from extinction? Place your bets in the comments section!

Below, take a look at the final page of SUPERMAN #16 (in stores now) as The Oracle awakens and demonstrates his immense power. And click here for your first sneak peeks at next month's SUPERMAN #17!

Scott Lobdell Talks SUPERMAN #16 and "H'El on Earth"

Last month, readers were shocked as the “H’El on Earth” crossover delivered a huge twist: a budding relationship between the maniacal H’El and the homesick Supergirl (for more about that and for a re-cap of the crossover event thus far, click here).

If you picked up SUPERMAN #15 when it hit shelves yesterday, you already know who the Man of Steel will turn to for help to put a stop to H’El and his destructive plan: The Justice League. But when the World’s Greatest Superheroes go to the battlefield against Kara and her Kryptonian ally in this month’s issue #16, will Superman be able to stop his cousin before it’s too late for our planet?

“There's a fight coming up between Flash and Supergirl, and when it was originally being written, one of the initial thoughts was, well, Flash is a member of the Justice League, so Kara would have to think twice about going up against these powerful heroes,” writer Scott Lobdell teased to NEWSARAMA about the upcoming SUPERMAN #16. “But again, that's just not true with these characters. As far as I can tell, Kara has been on Earth for about three weeks and hasn't met the Justice League. And she sees them as a bunch of people in costumes with kind of limited superpowers. As far as she's concerned, a group of people trying to express authority over her when she's trying to get Krypton back on its feet, she would have no personal regard or even respect for the Justice League.”

For more from Lobdell about SUPERMAN #16 and “H’El on Earth,” check out the full interviews that run today with the writer in MTV GEEK, COMIC VINE, and NEWSARAMA. And don’t forget to visit all three outlets for sneak peeks at Kenneth Rocafort’s interior art for SUPERMAN #16, which flies into stores on January 30th.

RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS and TEEN TITANS Join “Death of The Family”

This winter, The Joker is on the loose and is seeking revenge against the Bat-family in the acclaimed comic book event, “Death of the Family.”

Fans have already seen the beginning of this crossover’s impact on series such as BATMAN, BATGIRL, CATWOMAN, SUICIDE SQUAD, DETECTIVE COMICS, BATMAN AND ROBIN, and NIGHTWING. This week, RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS #15 will feel the consequences of the Clown Prince of Crime’s bloody return to Gotham City. And on January 2nd, TEEN TITANS #15 will become the first issue of the series to be an official tie-in to this horrifying crossover event.

“I think that the readers are going to be as surprised as the Joker is, to discover that his usual bag of psychological tricks that in the past that he has played on Jason no longer work they way he wants them to,” writer Lobdell teased to MTV GEEK about RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS #15. “And I think most of that has to do with Jason's relationship between Roy and Kori over the last 15 issues. The Jason that the Joker faces off against here isn't the same angry young man who was lashing out over issues related to Bruce and Joker. And part of that is because he's actually developed these strong relationships with the two outlaws who have been close friends and confidants since they've started hanging out together. Unfortunately what that means is that the Joker has to dig even deeper into his bag of psychological tricks -- and what he comes up with will shake Jason to his core!”

“The Teen Titans show up in Gotham to try to rescue Tim when they discover he's been kidnapped,” Lobdell continued to COMIC VINE about TEEN TITANS. “The Joker, who is generally not a character that plays well with metahumans, rather than try to deal with them himself while he has all the Bat-Family encounters going on, has set up a situation that is going to keep both the Teen Titans and the Outlaws very busy. They won't have the time or resources to track Tim and Jason. Joker's set up a scenario that's pretty ingenious.”

For more inside scoop from Lobdell, check out the full interviews with him that ran this morning in MTV GEEK, COMIC BOOK RESOURCES, NEWSARAMA and COMIC VINE. And don’t forget to visit all four outlets for a special preview of RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS #15 and for sneak peeks at the interior art from TEEN TITANS #15.

Tom Taylor needs to get to the land of the dead to rescue Lizzie Hexam, but the only way he can get there is through a story – literally. The nearest location for Tom and company is Australia’s Hanging Rock  – a place steeped in mystery and fiction from film, literature, and local legends. But has Tom chosen the right location? Will be able to, indeed, just walk into that story? And once there, will he be able to find the story Lizzie is trapped in? In stores this week, THE UNWRITTEN #42 comes to you from Mike Carey and Peter Gross. Click here for an exclusive preview of the issue.

the direction of Dr. Veritas, a beautiful woman who designed the instruments gauging Superman’s abilities. These machines are so powerful, in fact, that Superman feels exhausted and actually begins to perspire for the first time since he can remember. But does the fact that him and Dr. Vertias have known each other for a while mean that they can trust one another? After all, why is she collecting all this data on Superman in the first place?

SUPERMAN #13, in stores on October 24, comes to you from writer Scott Lobdell and artist Kenneth Rocafort. Check out the preview in the back of all of today’s DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 releases or simply click right here.

SUPERMAN ANNUAL #1 Spotlight

This month, DC Comics will release its next batch of Annuals. These special oversized issues will not only build off of the events in their respective series, but will also greatly impact the expanding DC Universe. Every day this week on THE SOURCE, we’ll be putting individual spotlights on each of these Annual issues by talking to various writers, artists, and editors to give you special sneak peeks at what’s to come! Next up is SUPERMAN ANNUAL #1.

"We've heard a lot about Helspont and his intergalactic conquests – I thought it was time to see him in action! Unfortunately for Superman, the Last Son of the House of Daemon has a bite that is much worse than his bite!” teased writer Scott Lobdell.

“There is an old life rule that says you shouldn't move in with your best friend.  You would think a guy as smart as Clark would know that hosting Jimmy would strain even his super human levels of endurance.”

“I love that the Annual touches base with other aliens living on Earth. We get to see Starfire, Martian Manhunter, Hawkman -- and the cameos don't stop there! I think it was only fitting that we should touch base with these characters considering how much Superman's actions in the coming months are going to effect the perception of all aliens currently visiting our planet. This is one of those Annuals that is a total game-changer!”

“I wasn't familiar with Pascal Alixe's work before we started the Annual, but I am sure the industry will be standing up to take notice once this book is out. He was tasked with creating the Daemonite homeworld, and he knocked it out of the park and right out of the galaxy!”

“In the Man of Steel’s first Annual we deal with an alien threat that has targeted the Last Son of Krypton, and we get the truth’s behind invaders that have been here for some time and are about to be eradicated by their own kind,” added series editor Eddie Berganza. “There’s also close encounter cameos by Starfire, Hawkman and Martian Manhunter. Why should they be loyal to their adopted planet is the question raised.”

“There’s some epic art by lead artist Pascal Alixe on this and Scott Lobdell with Fabian Nicieza have crafted a story that reminds us we are not alone on Earth – but we may be soon if the alien extinction continues!”

From the creative team of Scott Lobdell, Pascal Alixe and Fabian Nicieza, SUPERMAN ANNUAL #1 arrives in stores on August 29.

Paperback Spotlight – SUPERBOY VOL. 1: INCUBATION

It’s hard to believe that we’re already almost one full year into DC COMICS-THE NEW 52. To celebrate this monumental anniversary, each day this week on THE SOURCE we’ll be spotlighting a different paperback collected edition being released this month. With the launch storylines of these critically acclaimed series collected for the first time in their entirety, it’s a great way for new readers to join the growing DC Universe. Today, we shed a spotlight on SUPERBOY VOL. 1: INCUBATION.

"I would have been a lot more intimidated at the thought of reintroducing Superboy to a new audience if I wasn't working with the phenomenally talented artist R.B. Silva. From the Jimmy Olsen back-up feature to illustrating the all new adventures of Superboy?  It made perfect sense to anyone who saw how devoted he is to making sure his characters nearly leap off of every page!” writer Scott Lobdell told THE SOURCE.

“While the original intent was to preserve as much of Superboy's original origin as possible ... as changes were made to Superman (the Kents were not alive) and Teen Titans (this was to be the first gathering of teen superheroes with that name) it became clearer that Kon El just could have not existed as he was originally created. So it was left to me to try to preserve what was most important about his origin -- the core of the character -- so that new fans and old would come to love Superboy for the always exciting character that he is and always has been!”

“Since you are reading this exclusive SOURCE blog, it is only fair that I give you an exclusive story... but only if you promise not to blab it all over the Black Hole that is Tumblr! When I was naming Daniel Templar in Superboy, I accidentally typed a ‘Z’ instead of ‘D.’ When I read it after I turned it into my editor (hey, Chris!) I noticed the typo and I thought ‘Zaniel?! What an interesting name!’ and so I left it!”

“First, I want it on record that I was certain that was a totally intentional name, and that I don’t make a habit of letting major characters get christened by typos,” continued series editor Chris Conroy. “But ego aside: stuff like that is all part of the seat-of-your-pants joy of working with Scott Lobdell, who never, ever fails to surprise. I’m immensely proud of the wild, crazy story that Scott and RB cooked up for this first volume of SUPERBOY, and I’m psyched at all the twists and turns we’ve built into the character. He hasn’t even met Superman yet, and we’ve still got dozens of questions to answer for you! This book is the perfect primer for some of the absolutely bonkers Super-stories coming your way in year two of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, and I want everyone to enjoy the hard work of Scott, RB, inker Rob Lean, colorists Tanya & Richard Horie, letterer Carlos Mangual, cover artists Shane Davis and Eric Canete … They’re starting to play me off now, aren’t they?”

SUPERBOY VOL. 1: INCUBATION is available in bookstores everywhere now.
