James Tynion IV Talks TALON

Launched in September as part of DC Comics’ historic “Zero Month,” TALON centers around Calvin Rose, the Talon who managed to escape his doomed fate. Co-written by Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV and featuring art by Guillem March, this all-new ongoing series spins directly out of this past spring’s “Night of the Owls” crossover event that spanned the Bat-family of titles.

Fans who have already read TALON #2 (which hit shelves yesterday) were left with one heck of an ending. And with a cliffhanger like that, the series is only just getting started. So what’s next for the former assassin in the middle of it all? For starters, a trip to New York City in the upcoming TALON #3!

“Issues 3 and 4 are part of a 2-part story -- and it's a big one!” Tynion IV teased to MTV GEEK about what’s on deck for the series. “#3 is going to take Calvin Rose to New York City, which is a place where he has a very strong personal history with. We're going to see that this is where Calvin first went when he escaped The Court Of Owls. And we're also going to see the return of Casey and Sarah Washington, the two people from #0 who he refused to kill; this is where they start coming back in a really big way. We're really going to be digging into what Calvin was up to when he first escaped from the Court, what his first real actions were -- and what he and Casey tried to build in the City before he left. We're also going to see some new antagonists for Calvin that we're going to hint at at the end of issue 2 … there's a lot of cool stuff happening in this issue! And it's going to have a huge impact on the direction of the series to come.”

For more sneak peeks at the New York-set TALON #3 and hints at future issues, check out some more interviews with Tynion IV that ran this morning in MTV GEEK, COMIC BOOK RESOURCES, NEWSARAMA, and COMIC VINE. And don’t forget to pick up TALON #3 when it flies into stores on January 2, 2013.

Scott Snyder Talks “Death of the Family” with THE WASHINGTON POST

BATMAN #14, by the New York Times bestselling creative team of writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo, hit shelves earlier this week.

The issue made some major revelations about Gotham City’s Clown Prince of Crime and his ruthless plans to annihilate The Dark Knight’s allies.

“Everything that has happened to these characters in the past year is ammunition for the Joker,” said Snyder to THE WASHINGTON POST. “He’s been away for a year, so he’s been watching them all year long, and everything that they care about is something that he can burn to the ground.”

AMAZON Releases Best Comics and Graphic Novels of 2012 List

This week, the editors at AMAZON.COM released their picks for Best Books of the Year. And making their list of top Comics and Graphic Novels was SWAMP THING, VOL. 1: RAISE THEM BONES and WONDER WOMAN, VOL. 1: BLOOD.

“SWAMP THING VOL. 1: RAISE THEM BONES is the first part of a story I've been dreaming about doing since I arrived at DC,” writer Scott Snyder told THE SOURCE upon the book’s release in August. “[Artist] Yanick Paquette has done the work of his life on this book, and I couldn't be prouder of him, or it. And Marco Rudy and Victor Ibanez, Val Staples and Nathan Fairbairn all brought the world of Swamp Thing to life in wonderfully nightmarish ways. So come to the swamp. The Green is waiting.”

And written by Brian Azzarello and illustrated by Cliff Chiang with art by Tony Akins and Dan Green, WONDER WOMAN, VOL. 1: BLOOD gives the iconic character a new origin (Zeus is her father) and extends her family to include various Greek Gods. Since it’s debut, this acclaimed series has brought darker aspects to Diana’s stories by blending superhero, mythological and horror genres to create a fresh take on the story of the Amazon warrior.

For this week’s installment of Preview Monday, we’re giving you exclusive first looks at SWAMP THING ANNUAL #1 and AMERICAN VAMPIRE #32!

“Rotworld” continues in SWAMP THING ANNUAL #1, as the origins of Alec Holland and Anton Arcane's epic feud are explored. Years ago, when Holland was a young man and still a student botanist, he traveled to the Carpathian Mountains, at the request of Arcane, to study the residual radiation from Soviet testing. But something strange was also happening in this small and barren mountain town. How has it avoided conquest for hundreds of years from invading armies? And don't miss Holland's first meeting with Abby Arcane. From co-writers Scott Snyder and Scott Tuft and artist Becky Cloonan, SWAMP THING ANNUAL #1 arrives in stores this Wednesday. Earlier today, we showed you a sneak peek at the issue, but if that left you wanting more, click here to see a full exclusive preview!

It's the penultimate issue of “The Blacklist”! Pearl is held captive as Hattie reveals how she became allies with B.D. Bloch. Written by acclaimed author Scott Snyder and featuring explosive artwork by Rafael Albuquerque, AMERICAN VAMPIRE #32 lands in stores this week. Click here for an exclusive preview of the issue.

Annuals Spotlight: SWAMP THING ANNUAL #1

This Halloween, DC Comics will release its next batch of Annuals. These special oversized issues will not only build off of the events in their respective series, but will also greatly impact the expanding DC Universe. Leading up to their October 31 releases, we’ll be putting individual spotlights on each of these Annual issues by giving you special sneak peeks at what’s to come! You’ve already seen us tease JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK ANNUAL #1 and BATGIRL ANNUAL #1. Today, journey into “Rotworld” with SWAMP THING ANNUAL #1.

Examining the classic rivalry between Alec Holland and Anton Arcane, SWAMP THING ANNUAL #1 shows not only the duo’s first encounter, but also introduces Alec to the beautiful Abby. Planting the seeds of “Rotworld,” this must-have issue is co-written by Scott Snyder and Scott Tuft and features stunning art by Becky Cloonan.

“Several years before the gory encounter seen in SWAMP THING #0, Alec Holland and Anton Arcane met for the first time, in the twisted little town in the Carpathians that Anton calls home,” teased Associate Editor Chris Controy. “But it wasn’t just Anton that Alec met there — he also fell hard for the tragic love of his life, Abigail Arcane. So why don’t either of them remember that meeting? How did Alec survive Anton’s wrath? And who’s the mysterious benefactor that comes to Alec’s aid?”

“Scott Snyder and Becky Cloonan’s first collaboration on BATMAN #12 was a spectacular success, so reuniting them on a classic, spine-tingling monster story was irresistible,” Conroy continued. “Becky had a blast drawing a story that combined romance and horror (as she put it: ‘I live to draw tension building up to a kiss ... and people peeking through doors’), and Scott’s co-writer on the acclaimed SEVERED, Scott Tuft, brought a modern take to the ‘evil town in the mountains’ vibe of Arcane’s seat of power. Wrap it up in a framing sequence set in ‘Rotworld’ by Andrew Belanger and Karl Kerschl, which features a brief taste of events to come in SWAMP THING #14, and you’ve got an Annual we’re awfully proud of! And getting a double-sized serving of Swamp Thing on Halloween? TOO perfect. We’re happy to be that one house in your neighborhood that gives out the full-size Snickers bars, instead of the wimpy ones.”

Below, take a sneak peek at SWAMP THING ANNUAL #1 by checking out the first page of art seen in this special issue, which arrives in stores this Wednesday! And stay tuned to THE SOURCE for an exclusive preview of the issue later today.

Vertigo Announces THE WAKE, A new series by Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy

New York Times bestselling author, Scott Snyder (American Vampire, Batman, Swamp Thing) and artist Sean Murphy (Punk Rock Jesus, Joe The Barbarian), the incredible team behind the miniseries AMERICAN VAMPIRE: Survival of the Fittest, are reuniting for a new limited series in 2013: THE WAKE.

Beneath the surface, set amidst the claustrophobic yet beautiful and sweeping ocean-scapes, a discovery is made that will reveal a secret mythology. Full of suspense and horror, THE WAKE is an underwater sci-fi epic like none other.

"I couldn't be more excited about The Wake!” said Snyder about this new comic book series. “This is a story Sean and I have actually been developing together for more than a year, a big, twisted, sprawling science fiction and horror epic, all of which begins with a single, terrifying discovery at the bottom of the ocean. It's one of the most ambitious stories I've ever done, and there's no one I'd rather be creating it with than Sean Murphy. Sean's a great friend and we had a blast together on AMERICAN VAMPIRE: Survival of the Fittest; luckily, he's also one of the industry's brightest new stars, someone with unrivaled abilities as a world-builder—every scene he draws is so fully realized, so richly imagined, it's hugely inspiring working with him, and I'm grateful to him for signing on to be my partner at the end of the world, here."

The adventure begins in 2013!

THIS JUST HAPPENED: A Harley in Joker's clothing

SPOILER ALERT: If you have not read BATMAN #13 yet and do not wish to know what happens, stop reading this post now (major spoiler alerts ahead!).

The Joker was taking it back to the beginning. Acme Chemicals. The catwalk. The Red Hood.

The stage was set for the first of what promised to be a cataclysmic series of battles between the Dark Knight and his arch-foe in BATMAN #13, writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo’s cinematic kick-off to the line-wide “Death of the Family” Batman crossover.

But seconds before Batman reaches the Red Hood, he’s knocked into an empty chemical vat and left to discover that it isn’t the Joker underneath his old duds, but his sometimes-sidekick Harley Quinn. But why?

Why else? To trick, delay and distract Batman while the Joker himself is off wreaking havoc elsewhere.

Where? Well, you should read the issue. Seriously. BATMAN #13 is as important as these things get, and it’s a thrilling kick-off to what’s sure to be the most talked-about Batman story in decades. Yup. Decades. If you haven’t read it yet, please make a beeline to your comic shop now. We’ll wait here.

And if you had any doubts that this Joker is a meaner, deadlier and more frightening version of the Clown Prince of Crime, they will be quickly dispelled by Harley’s chilling response to Batman:

“He’s not the same, Bats…He’s not my Mr. J. anymore.”

Jim Lee and Scott Snyder team up for 2013 Superman project

2013 is going to be an epic year for Superman – and we know two reasons why:

Scott Snyder and Jim Lee.

The superstar creative team will join forces for the first time to launch a new Superman title that promises to elevate the already high-flying hero to new heights and force him to face off against foes familiar and new, as only two of the top industry talents can.

Snyder, who’s bringing back the Joker in the pages of Batman’s “Death of the Family” crossover and DC Entertainment Co-Publisher Lee, who just completed a historic artistic run on JUSTICE LEAGUE with writer and DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns, are teaming up at the top of their games and promise to craft a tale that’ll engage Superman fans new and old, and add new, compelling chapters to the Superman – and Clark Kent – mythos. This is as can’t miss as these things get, people. But let’s hear it from the creators themselves.

Jim?

“As a huge fan of Scott's writing, I'm looking forward to drawing Superman as much as I am reading Scott’s story as it unfolds,” Lee said. “Scott's crafted a truly epic yet personal story which will demonstrate without a doubt why Superman remains the most iconic hero of the modern age. 2013 is gonna absolutely rock!”

Indeed it will! But the teasing isn’t over. Let’s pass the mic to Mr. Snyder, shall we?

"I've loved Superman since I was a kid, and to be working on him now, with the great Jim Lee, is simply too thrilling for words. It's a dream come true for me on every front,” Snyder said. “I don't want to give too much away, so I'll just say it's the Superman story I'd write if I only ever got one chance to write the character. It's an exploration of everything I love and am fascinated by about him. Like Court of Owls for Batman, it's a character piece for Clark - it's going to challenge him to his core. And it's definitely epic in scope, with huge action and drama - the biggest and most earth shaking action I've ever done. Can't wait to see what you all think of it. Couldn't be more grateful or excited to get the chance to make this one!"
