Happy Wednesday, folks. Still sipping that cup of coffee? Hoping to get an extra 15 minutes of sleep? Today’s not the day.

BATMAN #13, from the superstar creative team of writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo hits today, and it kicks off “Death of the Family” – a story that’s bound to rest on your shelf next to other Batman classics like THE KILLING JOKE, THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS, JOKER and BATMAN: YEAR ONE. High expectations? Sort of. Wait until you read the issue.

Not only are Snyder and Capullo crafting the seminal Joker story for our time, but they’re doing it with every Bat-Family book chipping in. Joker vs. Damian? Check. Batgirl/Joker rematch? Check. Red Hood faces off against his “murderer”? Check. This is all hands on deck, and while saying “things will never be the same” sounds trite, it’s never been more true. This story has consequences with a capital “C,” and it kicks off today.

Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo Talk “Death Of The Family” With USA TODAY

Just in time for New York Comic Con, the Joker will make his explosive return to Gotham City next Wednesday when BATMAN #13 hits stores.

USA TODAY spoke with BATMAN series writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo about “Death of the Family,” the Joker-centric crossover that will be hitting the Bat titles beginning this month.

“He believes he often brings the worst news of Batman's own heart to him in the form of these terrible nightmares he has to fight,” Snyder told USA TODAY of the villain. “If that's his purpose, then he sees this family in a lot of ways as interlopers and people who make his idol, his Bat-king, weak.”

Head on over to USA TODAY to read their full coverage and to check out a slideshow of some classic Joker imagery over the years.

5.2 Reasons We're Excited for "Death of the Family"

Stop us if you've heard this one: a clown cuts off his face and disappears from the spotlight for a year before coming back and wrecking all sorts of murder and mayhem on the lives of the entire Bat-Family with a frightful gusto and panache that would make even Nicolas Cage say, "Hey dude, that's pretty crazy."

No? Well, boy, are we about to put a smile on your face.

The Joker makes his triumphant return in BATMAN #13 to remind us that you can't spell slaughter without laughter and to kick off the crossover event "Death of the Family," which not only sees the aforementioned return of the Clown Prince of Crime, but also his methodical and downright terrifying plans to take down the Dark Knight and his allies in the crazed criminal's latest attempt at a laugh.

This event already had us tingling with anticipation. The Joker's been MIA since the launch of DC COMICS – THE NEW 52—save for his gruesome face-lift at the end of DETECTIVE COMICS #1—and his return promises to bring with it chills and thrills the likes of which we comic fans haven't seen in a while. So, this week, we're breaking down the 5.2 Reasons We're Excited for "Death of the Family!"

1. Scott Snyder...

With his first major foray into the Batman world in "The Black Mirror," Snyder definitively proved to readers that he knew his way around a story. With the launch of DC Comics – The New 52, he showed us that he could navigate that sucker with his eyes closed after having been spun around three times while Bizarro reads out directions to him. Not only that, his previous crossover, "Night of the Owls," was easily one of the best Batman stories ever told—so much so that if we ever see an owl again, we're punching that freaky little thing right in its weird bird-face.

2. ...writing the Joker...

"Death of the Family" marks the first time Snyder gets to play in the Joker's funhouse, and after what he managed to do with the brand-new villains of the Court of Owls (see previous note about uppercutting birds), we can't even begin to imagine the amount of blinding brilliance and horrifying awesomeness he'll bring to the most popular comic book villain in pop culture history. Don't even bother spraying us with Joker Gas, we're grinning with glee already.

3. ...alongside his fellow writers...

Of course, Snyder won't be the only one getting to cause mayhem and mischief throughout Gotham City and the lives of its caped crusaders. "Death of the Family" spans a number of Bat-titles, allowing for each writer to delve into the Joker's particular brand of insanity. We all go a little mad sometimes, and now they get to let that madness out onto the comic page.

4. ...all putting the members of the Bat-Family to the test.

As Snyder himself mentioned, the Joker really hasn't gone after the members of the Bat-Family directly before. Although he crippled Barbara Gordon and beat Jason Todd to death, those were both a part of his attack on Commissioner Gordon and Batman (and probably just for funsies cause he's, you know, psychotic). With "Death of the Family," the Joker gets to unleash all his crazy on the likes of Nightwing, Red Robin, Batgirl and Jason Todd. So, good luck, guys. It was nice knowing you.

5. But that's all just set-up for the punchline.

Everything we just mentioned is really just the pre-game before the party. All we're going to say is that by the end of Batman #13, you'll get an idea of the Joker's ultimate gag.

5.2 THE JOKER CUT OFF HIS FACE! HOLY MONKEY BEANS!

Third Wave Spotlight: TALON #1

In September, Zero Month introduced you to four all-new ongoing series: THE PHANTOM STRANGER, SWORD OF SORCERY, TALON and TEAM 7. With these #0 issues, you got a taste of the new characters and stories that will be impacting the ever-growing DC Universe.

This month, each of these four series will launch their #1 issue. To celebrate these releases, we’ll be putting a spotlight on each of these new titles every day this week on THE SOURCE. Next up is TALON #1. From co-writers James Tynion IV and Scott Snyder and artist Guillem March, TALON #1 hits stores on October 24. We asked March, Snyder and Tynion to tell us a little bit about their creative processes and to tease what readers can expect from issue #1.

How did you use issue #0 to help you launch issue #1? How were your creative approaches to these two issues different?

GUILLEM MARCH: We were lucky that Zero Month was right before the issue #1 launch, so it made a lot of sense that the origin of the character was told at the beginning. I love that it’s a standalone issue, so readers can read the whole origin and hopefully they’ll be interested enough in the character to learn more about him. But even if they don’t, they get a good self-contained story.

SCOTT SNYDER: We felt that with #0, we could give you a real sense of Calvin's history and who he was before the inciting event of “Night of the Owls.” That battle with Batman really hurt the Court, and that’s what #1 is about - Calvin, for the first time in years, thinking it might be safe to stop running because of what he sees on the news about this battle in Gotham between the Batman and the Owls. So #0 gave us an opportunity to show you how harrowing it's been for Calvin these past years, on the run, hunted because he did the right thing. Issue #1 is where it all comes to a head. So excited for what James Tynion IV has planned for you!

JAMES TYNION IV: Launching with a zero was a really interesting proposition from the start, because we knew that the first two issues had to be places you could jump onboard the series, without doubling down on any of the same material. So the way I started thinking about it is that issue #0 introduces our leading man, Calvin Rose, and issue #1 introduces the story in the present day that will drive our series issue-to-issue. So when the next issue comes out, people who have read the zero issue will have a special understanding of Calvin and his history that helps frame the premise of the actual monthly series. It helps to read both, but if you missed the zero issue, you should be able to jump on board with issue #1 and be fine.

What’s been the most fun aspect of writing/drawing and launching the new series so far?

GUILLEM MARCH: I love drawing dark and solitary characters, more than groups of colorful superheroes, so I love working in the Bat family. I’m also really excited by the fact this is a new character, so I’m somehow establishing his world, instead of sticking to what a previous artist has done with him. That’s a responsibility I enjoy a lot.

SCOTT SNYDER: Watching my pal and former student James Tynion IV come up with these amazing ideas and scenes and really, this whole world of story for the series. I'm serving as a co-plotter, so I help with the story, but he's the real brains behind it, and seeing him evolve and now be so so good, it's a joy. I could learn a lot from him now!

JAMES TYNION IV: Honestly, every part of the process has been a dream. I’ve had the skeleton of this story in my head for months, but as we move forward and flesh it out issue-by-issue, new storytelling opportunities present themselves every day. It’s the fact that this story, which was so much fun to plan, is coming to life as I write it. Some elements that were nothing but footnotes in the outline series are quickly becoming my favorite parts of the series. We’re doing a lot of world building in TALON, and I think it’s a world readers are going to enjoy coming back to month after month.

Do you have a ritual (music you listen to or something you eat or do to get you prepped) before approaching the writing/drawing for the series? If so, what is it?

GUILLEM MARCH: Not really. I get a coffee on the way to the studio and I read a page of script in the morning while drinking it. I used to draw one page every day – pencils in the morning and inks in the afternoon. Maybe I’ll do a warm-up sketch and then I start working while listening to some Morricone or Hans Zimmer. This job is about routine, no glamour – sorry to spoil the fun!

SCOTT SNYDER: I listen to a lot of old country and rockabilly. Sometimes old hip-hop. Elvis is my favorite of all time, as anyone who knows me will tell you :)

JAMES TYNION IV: Not really! I mean, I might pace a while muttering to myself, write some notes about what I want to accomplish in a given day, and then watch last night’s episode of The Daily Show … But ultimately, when I need to get the work done the only thing to do is start working. I just try to dive in, page one, panel one … The details might change a dozen times over before anyone sees it, but the most important ritual is just sitting down and getting to work.

Since TALON is the first book to star a character created in DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, do you feel any added pressure during your creative process while writing/drawing?

GUILLEM MARCH: Oh, I hadn’t noticed that, but now that you’ve told me, maybe I will!

SCOTT SNYDER: There's always pressure. Writing Batman is like a ton of pressure on you all the time. The only way to do it is block it out and just dive into the story - pretend you're writing it for yourself and no one else is going to read it. Just assume if you love it, and have really invested in it, emotionally, intellectually, they'll love it too.

JAMES TYNION IV: Absolutely! Rather than reinterpreting and recreating a figure known and loved for decades, we have to hook the readers from the start and show them why Calvin Rose deserves a place in the pantheon of DC heroes. I remember a conversation that Scott and I would have over and over when we were in the early stages of the book, about looking forward with the character. It wasn’t about building him up so we can reach issue #12, because we have a big story that will take us right up through the first year. It was about building a character that could last well beyond what we have planned, and about building a series that still has big stories to tell when it gets to issue #26 and even issue #58. If we were going to create this new character, it had to be someone with the potential and the personality to stick around the DC Universe for years, otherwise it wouldn’t be worth creating him in the first place. If the readers dig the series and support it, I honestly believe that there are years and years of great stories for Calvin, and a real chance that he will be sticking around for quite some time.

Paperback Spotlight – SWAMP THING VOL. 1: RAISE THEM BONES

It’s hard to believe that we’re already almost one full year into DC COMICS-THE NEW 52. To celebrate this monumental anniversary, each day this week on THE SOURCE we’ll be spotlighting a different paperback collected edition being released this month. With the launch storylines of these critically acclaimed series collected for the first time in their entirety, it’s a great way for new readers to join the growing DC Universe. Today, we shed a spotlight on SWAMP THING VOL. 1: RAISE THEM BONES.

“I couldn't be more excited about this release. SWAMP THING VOL. 1: RAISE THEM BONES is the first part of a story I've been dreaming about doing since I arrived at DC,” writer Scott Snyder told THE SOURCE. “The old Wrightson/Wein run I used to read over and over as a kid for its great gothic monster mashups and creepy storytelling. And then the Moore/Bissette run showed me how wickedly smart, frightening and inspiring a comic book could be. What I'm getting at is that Swamp Thing has long been one of my very favorite characters. And for me, doing this story meant trying do what so many great creators had done before us on the character - making something that was very much our own, something new, while still honoring the great Swamp Thing stories of the past. So this is our attempt to do that - in it, we give you a human Alec Holland, a man haunted by the knowledge that all his life, he's had a mysterious connection to the Green - the earth's plant life. A man who knows he is likely destined to become the monster known as Swamp Thing, the warrior and protector of the Green. What he doesn't know, though, is that he isn't just destined to be a Swamp Thing. He's destined to be the greatest protector the green has ever known - a warrior king Swamp Thing - a legend come to life, the savior of the Green in its time of greatest need.  And it does need Alec Holland, and need him desperately. Because in the American desert, a different kind of monster is rising, a lord of death and pestilence, a horror of storm, building a bone kingdom to spread across the world. That's my pitch. I hope you'll take a look. Yanick Paquette has done the work of his life on this book, and I couldn't be prouder of him, or it. And Marco Rudy and Victor Ibanez, Val Staples and Nathan Fairbairn all brought the world of Swamp Thing to life in wonderfully nightmarish ways. So come to the swamp. The Green is waiting.”

“Swamp Thing has played a major role in my love of the medium itself,” added artist Yanick Paquette. “My first real art crush was Bernie Wrightson who I discovered looking in a French, black and white copy of SWAMP THING #4 (the one with the werewolf). I hunted down Bernie's work frantically and my early drawings have his stamps all over it. But it's the Moore, Bissette, Totleben, Yate and Veitch run on SWAMP THING that really deeply changed my vision of what American comics could be. Their works not only defined the character but, for me at least, became a fictional genre of its very own: poetic horror, terror and beauty told by daringly exploring the medium emotive possibilities.”

“When my turn came to contribute to SWAMP THING, it was that rich, intimate legacy that came to mind. It's not just drawing a character. That book is a genre of its own. And as I ventured in the swamp and built my corner, I’ve felt like openly acknowledging my forebears for who I’m so tributary.”

“I love this opening set of stories so much, both for its horror and its humanity,” concluded series editor Matt Idelson. “And while no one can replace Alec Holland as my favorite character of the piece (and rightly so), William is one terrifically twisted adversary!”

SWAMP THING VOL. 1: RAISE THEM BONES will be available in comic book stores on August 22 and in bookstores everywhere on August 28.
