Preview Mondays: ACTION COMICS #9 and SWEET TOOTH #33

For this week’s installment of Preview Mondays, we’re giving you exclusive first looks at ACTION COMICS #9 and SWEET TOOTH #33.

With guest artist Gene Ha joining regular series writer Grant Morrison, ACTION COMICS #9 features a standalone tale of an alternate Superman on a parallel Earth. Returning to the comic book page with his debut in DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, this Superman of Earth 23 is now confronted with a rift between worlds, and faced with a monstrous Superman surrogate from another Earth gone horribly wrong.

The issue also features a back-up story by writer Sholly Fisch and artist Cully Hamner, which showcases this alternate Superman and his adventures on Earth 23.

Click here for an exclusive preview of the issue, highlighting the heroic origin of this alternate Man of Tomorrow – whose secret identity is Earth 23’s United States President, Calvin Ellis.

And SWEET TOOTH #33 features the continuing adventures of the big man and the boy, as they traverse the apocalyptic wasteland. Written and illustrated by Jeff Lemire, this issue features a special landscape presentation, providing a storybook view of the austere environments and the bleak tale of survival. But the issue’s visual orientation isn’t all that makes it special; SWEET TOOTH #33 marks the beginning of a new chapter in Sweet Tooth’s journey. And though he would never admit it, even Jeppard fears what’s still to come. Click here for an exclusive preview of the issue.

ARTISTS GENE HA AND CULLY HAMNER EXPLORE PARALLEL EARTHS IN ACTION COMICS #9

With ACTION COMICS #9, two acclaimed guest artists will explore an alternate Earth and the story of its Kryptonian protector. Multiple Eisner Award-winning artist Gene Ha will be a guest artist for the primary plot, penned by regular series writer Grant Morrison. And fresh from his recent work on THE SHADE miniseries, artist Cully Hamner will illustrate the issue’s back-up story, written by Sholly Fisch.

Parallel worlds come to the forefront of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 “Second Wave,” with titles such as EARTH 2 and WORLDS’ FINEST exploring the adventures of heroes on alternate Earths. ACTION COMICS #9 sets up the multiverse with a standalone story of a Superman from another Earth, who must fight a monster from yet another parallel world. But this isn’t just any monster; it’s a Superman surrogate known as Superdoom, twisted into an unstoppable agent of evil.

The back-up story will also feature an adventure of this alternate Superman, set on his parallel Earth.

Regular series artist Rags Morales will return for ACTION COMICS #10 in June. In the meantime, check out Ha’s inks for ACTION COMICS #9.

Exclusive Preview of the final issue of BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD

It’s the final issue of BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD and love is in the air in Gotham City.

When Bat-Mite develops a major crush on Batgirl, he turns to comic books for ways to pursue what his heart desires. But when his efforts make super-villains start popping up all over town, it’ll be up to Batman to swoop in to save the day.

"Happy Valentine's Day, DCU! To celebrate the day, Bat-Mite's bringing you an issue of BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD that's a veritable love letter to the DC Universe and the Bat-family,” series writer Sholly Fisch exclusively told THE SOURCE. “Of course, since Bat-Mite's developed a major crush on Batgirl, he's bringing along plenty of magical mischief and mayhem too.

"Sadly, it's also a goodbye present, since this will be the last issue of BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD. But it's been a great ride. I've loved every minute of writing the series, and this issue's sheer insanity (plus terrific art by Rick Burchett and Dan Davis) takes us out on a definite high note. It's the most fun you can have in a cowl and pointy ears -- at least, without having to worry about getting arrested."

Featuring a very special sign-off by Bat-Mite, BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD #16 is in stores today.

STEEL JOINS DC COMICS-THE NEW 52

One of the most prominent and popular African-American super heroes, STEEL will be making his debut into the world of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 on December 7.

Equal parts Superman and folk legend John Henry (to whom the name of his alter ego, John Henry Irons, is an homage), Steel will appear in ACTION COMICS #4 – written by critically acclaimed, bestselling author Grant Morrison and illustrated by Rags Morales.

When Terminauts threaten to lay waste to Metropolis in search of Superman, it falls to Steel to come to the aid of the beleaguered hero – and the Man of Steel will sure need the help of this steel-drivin’ man. But their team-up isn’t all we’ll get from Steel in this issue. ACTION COMICS #4 also features a special backup story written by Sholly Fisch and drawn by Brad Walker. The eight-page story continues the action of ACTION, showcasing a heavy metal battle between Steel and Metal-zero.

Debuting in ACTION COMICS #4, Steel will return for ACTION COMICS #7, where he will star in another backup by Fisch and Walker.

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT … ACTION COMICS

Some have said that three is the magic number. If that’s the case, November should be a fascinating month. Here at THE SOURCE, we’ll spotlighting key third issues from DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 with an ongoing series of posts titled “3 Things You Didn’t Know About DC COMICS-THE NEW 52.” Expect the unexpected–in threes.

1) BACKUPS ARE COMING

Starting with #4 (on sale 12/7), ACTION COMICS will now include eight-page backups written by Grant Morrison’s hand-picked choice, Sholly Fisch (writer of THE ALL NEW BATMAN THE BRAVE & THE BOLD). Each one will tie in directly with the 20-page lead story. What’s the backup of #4 about? Well, that brings us to our next “thing you need to know”…

2) STEEL IS MAKING HIS “NEW 52” DEBUT

The lead story in ACTION #4 by Grant Morrison and Rags Morales features the debut of the “New 52” Steel! Last we saw of John Henry Irons, in ACTION #2, he had quit his military job in protest over Lex Luthor torturing Superman under General Lane’s command. Now, as the Terminauts lay siege to Metropolis, it’s time for John Henry to put his money where his mouth is and go help Superman defend the city. The backup in #4 ties into the main story by depicting a critical fight between Steel and the brand new Metall-0!

3) BRAD WALKER AND CHRISCROSS TO DRAW BACKUPS

Brad Walker (HEROES FOR HIRE) is drawing the backup in #4. The backups of #5 -- spotlighting Ma & Pa Kent -- and #6 will be drawn by ChrisCross (SUPERMAN/BATMAN). The backup of #7 sees Brad Walker return to the art, and then #8 -- the conclusion of the first storyarc -- is one big issue-long epic by Grant Morrison and Rags Morales!

As a bonus, check out this first look at Steel’s armor by Brad Walker (based off a design by Rags Morales)! Much in the same way that Superman is wearing jeans and a T-shirt in this current arc, at this point Steel’s armor is in its “prototype” phase. Look for the final design somewhere down the line, but in the meantime, get ready for one heck of a throwdown!
