5.2 Reasons to Love the Green Lantern Universe

The GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #1 lit up comic book shelves yesterday, and can you believe... Wait, you have read it already right? If not, stop reading this article, go buy it from the comic shop or download it onto your mobile device, and read it immediately. It's okay. We'll wait.

Back? Awesome. So, crazy, right?! The First Lantern! Black Hand! The Third Army! Holy Moley. We've been fans of writer Geoff Johns' Green Lantern epic since he kicked things off with the GREEN LANTERN: REBIRTH limited series, and since then, Johns has crafted a veritable space opera filled with amazing character development, epic action, and continuing twists and turns that leave us desperately wanting a ring to fly through our ceiling and recruit us into the Corps. (We don't know what the word "reality" means).

As such, this week, we're listing off the 5.2 Reasons to Love the Green Lantern Universe!

1. New Characters
The upcoming GREEN LANTERN #0 introduces readers to a brand new recruit: the mysterious Baz. Not much is known about him, but we're already pretty stoked to find out all we can. After all, this is part of a time-honored tradition with this title. Over the years, the Green Lantern comic has introduced quite a few new characters, and everyone has their favorite—Hal, Guy, John, Kyle, Kilowog, G'Nort for some of you out there, we're sure... probably. Needless to say, we can't wait to see Baz join the ranks of the Green Lantern greats.

2. Diversity
The Green Lantern Corps also boasts a very diverse cast of characters—from strong female heroes like Soranik Natu and Laira to one of comics' most prominent African-American characters, John Stewart, to whatever the heck Chaselon is—and with his Arab heritage, the newest Green Lantern adds to this mix. Of course, when making a point about diversity, it would be unthinkable to limit it merely to humans, and Green Lantern is proud to feature more Korugaran, Xudarian, Bellatrixian and Ungaran characters than any other comic book in history!

3. Epic Events
The introduction of the newest Green Lantern comes in conjunction with the latest chapter in the Lantern saga, "Rise of The Third Army," which in itself follows previous game-changing crossovers like the incredibly popular "Sinestro Corps War" and "War of the Green Lanterns." We still remember the chill we felt when Batman rose in "Blackest Night," and this moment in Sinestro Corps War is still one of our favorites ever for the character:

4. Seeing the Guardians Completely Lose It
We mentioned earlier the character growth present throughout all of Johns' GL run, but nothing stands out as both terrifyingly awesome and awesomely terrifying as the once-thought benevolent Guardians of the Universe ever so slowly going totally insane.

5. The Emotional Spectrum
If you’re new to the world of Green Lantern (welcome, by the way!), you may not realize that Lanterns in this world come in far more colors than just green. Johns introduced an entire emotional spectrum, each with its own Corps, color, and power. And like arguing whether you belong in Gryffindor or Ravenclaw (poor, poor Hufflepuff), fans have long since enjoyed discussing and theorizing about which Corps they'd belong in. Not to mention the replica lanterns, rings and shirts you can get to show off your Corps pride.

5.1 Ch'p and Dex-Starr Are Two Characters That Exist and It is Awesome

5.2 So. Many. Cosplay. Options.

War Aftermath: Picking Up The Pieces

Hal Jordan stripped of his ring? Green Lanterns abruptly resign their posts? Sinestro is a Green Lantern again??

The “War of the Green Lanterns” may have ended in GREEN LANTERN #67, but chaos, violence, and paranoia still pollute the fragile state of the Green Lantern Corps. And the mystery behind the renegade Sinestro gaining a Green Lantern ring is not helping. At all. If the Guardians can explain why their greatest enemy wears their badge once again, they certainly aren’t talking. And amidst all of this turmoil, a conspiracy forms that could destroy the Corps from within.

Written by Tony Bedard and featuring art by Miguel Sepulveda, Tyler Kirkham, Batt and Rain Beredo, WAR OF THE GREEN LANTERNS: AFTERMATH #1 flies into stores today.

BACKGROUND from the comic books:

Sinestro, a magenta-skinned humanoid, hails from the planet Korugar. As a rookie Green Lantern he was trained by Abin Sur. The two quickly became friends despite differing opinions on how to protect the universe. These comrades became family when Sinestro married Abin's sister, Arin Sur.

Sinestro has become known as the greatest Green Lantern for freeing Korugar from all forms of oppression and preserving order in his sector. The Guardians of the Universe consider Sinestro a role model for the entire Corps and one of the few beings they trust.

Abin's recent death at the hands of the creature Parallax has deeply saddened the stoic Sinestro. He is hesitant to accept Abin's successor Hal Jordan, resenting the fact he's been assigned by the Guardians to mentor him. Though Sinestro demands respect and is admired by the entire Corps, Hal seems unimpressed creating tension between the two.

This mustachioed police officer hates leaving his sector for any length of time. Without his guidance, Sinestro feels chaos will result. He believes his iron-fisted rule is necessary to protect the galaxy despite what the Korugarians and the rest of sector 1417 believe.

OPENING THE VAULT – A LIVE-ACTION BLUE BEETLE?

PLUS! WHY DOES AQUALAD REFUSE TO SWIM? WHAT’S MARK STRONG AS SINESTRO REALLY LIKE? AND TELL US WHAT HERO YOU’D LIKE TO SEE LEAP INTO LIVE ACTION!

So as you know, while Jim Lee and Dan DiDio head up publishing and editorial, Diane Nelson and I work on everything outside of the comics in film, television and other media alongside Warner Bros. to try and bring DC’s rich and expansive universe of characters and stories to life. From 100 Bullets to Zatanna. Pretty awesome job. I feel incredibly lucky to be a part of it and to work with so many amazingly talented people.

When you’re moving behind the scenes on stuff like film and television there are always a lot of projects, scripts and cool things that are created. I always wanted to hear about and see the development of these projects, even if it was early or they weren’t a sure thing, and now that I have access to the top secret room we keep them in – I call it THE VAULT – I thought I’d share some glimpses at what Warner Bros. and DCE have in there with my fellow DC fanatics.

First up is one of my personal favorites: a live action screen test of Blue Beetle transforming and something we’re using in the hopes of bringing him to the small screen. There was so much excitement when I mentioned this on Twitter I thought I’d share a little more information…

I feel very fortunate to have been a part of Blue Beetle’s introduction way back in INFINITE CRISIS. I’ve said it before, but thanks to the BLUE BEETLE series launched by Keith Giffen and John Rogers with a great design by Cully Hamner, Jaime Reyes rocks. Great character, great story, great look. He’s already appeared in animation, had action figures and right now he’s on my computer in live-action glory. I have an early special effects test that has been floating around of what his armored scarab-suit could look like. This isn’t final. This isn’t greenlit. It’s only a test that was done. We still have a long way to go to see if we can get this off the ground and a lot of people to jump on board…but check out some stills:

Pretty cool, huh? We’ll be bringing this short clip to San Diego Comic-Con and playing it in as many DCU panels as possible so everyone gets a chance to see it.

At the same time, as previously announced, the YOUNG JUSTICE cartoon series is just around the corner featuring Robin, Kid Flash, Superboy, Miss Martian, Artemis and the all-new Aqualad who will be appearing very briefly in BRIGHTEST DAY #4, but really comes into his own in BRIGHTEST DAY #10 before hitting the small screen this fall.

young_justice_poster

When we first meet Aqualad in BRIGHTEST DAY he’s Jackson Hyde. An average student, with an on-and-off girlfriend, that’s pretty bored in New Mexico.

Since he was young, he’s been taught by his parents to fear water…they don’t want him near it because his true parents would be able to locate him. Not to mention certain changes happen to Jackson when he gets in the water.

Jackson has kept this secret hidden for years, lying to his girlfriend about being afraid of drowning, being unable to swim and being in the dark about the mysterious tattoos he’s had since birth. He’s done his best to avoid it. But soon something’s going to force him out into the open and dive into the water.

Obviously, this all ties into the larger Aquaman and Mera story within BRIGHTEST DAY, but Jackson’s adventures will also be seen in the YOUNG JUSTICE animated series this fall along with more DC characters than you could imagine.

I really believe in the story behind Jackson and, like Blue Beetle, I hope you give him a chance to grab your heart and imagination as he arrives on the scene in comics and cartoons.

brightest-day10

Finally, the big one.

Mark Strong.

Sinestro.

I just returned from New Orleans, where GREEN LANTERN is deep in production set for release in June 2011. GREEN LANTERN has an unreal crew and cast. Grant Major – the Production Designer on LORD OF THE RINGS. Martin Campbell – the director of CASINO ROYALE. And Mark Strong from SHERLOCK HOLMES and KICK-ASS as Sinestro. And while I was there, there was a test on Sinestro. How he looks. How he moves. An amazing test.

Unfortunately, that test is top secret.

I can say with confidence, however, if you like Sinestro you’re going to love Mark Strong as Sinestro. Powerful, regal, intimidating. Mark clearly has done his research and embraced every aspect of what makes Sinestro one of the greatest, most complex characters within the vast, epic universe of the Green Lantern Corps. I think you’ll be as psyched as I am when you finally see him.

sinestro

So that’s (some of) what we’ve got going on right now. Before I log off…what hero do you want to see in live action more than any other? Let us know and remember

ALL WILL BE WELL!

Geoff
