Previews of Wednesday’s DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 Releases

Here’s a round up of the exclusive previews from this week’s DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 releases, on sale tomorrow.

USA TODAY has a sneak peek at RED LANTERNS #6. "I really liked the idea of taking these monsters, who are normally portrayed as wild forces of destruction, and really getting under their skin, finding out what made them rage and where their rage might lead them (and) making them individual," series writer Peter Milligan said of the Red Lantern Corps.

COMIC BOOK RESOURCES posted the first five pages of ACTION COMICS #6, NEWSARAMA debuted a sequence from BATWING #6, COMICVINE has your first look at HAWK AND DOVE #6 and IFANBOY previewed STATIC SHOCK #6.

Meanwhile, MAXIM has a glance at SWAMP THING #6 and WIRED’s GEEKDAD gave you a taste of the new back-up story in MEN OF WAR #6. GAWKER’s KOTAKU has a sneak peek at JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL #6 and GAWKER’s IO9 showed you the first five pages of STORMWATCH #6. And over at IGN, take a first look at DETECTIVE COMICS #6.

Social media buff? Then check out the exclusive previews of GREEN ARROW #6 and O.M.A.C. #6 on DC Comics’ official Google+ and Facebook pages.

And in case you missed our blog post linking to it earlier today, THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER has your first look at ANIMAL MAN #6 and an interview with series writer Jeff Lemire about the issue, which depicts the independent film that Buddy Baker starred in.

To be continued …

Peter Milligan Heads to STORMWATCH

It was announced earlier today that Jeff Lemire will be writing JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK. So where is Peter Milligan going you ask? Well, Milligan will be staying on RED LANTERNS and Vertigo’s HELLBLAZER and will be writing STORMWATCH beginning with issue #9.

We asked Milligan about taking on the covert sci-fi superhero team STORMWATCH and here’s what he had to say:

“Stormwatch has the craziness, the paranoia and the occasional bursts of odd humor that really grab me. This is my kind of book. In other words, when I re-read Paul Cornell’s excellent first series with a view to taking over the writing duties I was really excited. And I’m excited too by what I have planned, from Stormwatch facing a ferocious character from the Red Lantern Corps, to hidden secrets being revealed about the origin of Stormwatch, and some shocking revelations about the mysterious Shadow Lords. It’s going to be a very intense ride.

It’s a bit of a wrench leaving JL Dark, of course, and not working with the increasingly outstanding Mikel Janin. But the fact that Jeff Lemire is taking over makes me very sanguine. I think Jeff is great. And I think he’ll be great for this book. It’ll be intriguing to see how he handles the great conman mage, John Constantine, whose twisted life I’m continuing to chronicle over in Vertigo’s Hellblazer.”

You can pick up Milligan’s first issue of STORMWATCH in May.

Previews of Wednesday’s DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 Releases

To help kick off 2012, here's a round up of exclusive previews from the first round of fifth issues from DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, on sale tomorrow.

ACTION COMICS # 5, written by Grant Morrison and illustrated by Andy Kubert and Jesse Delperdang, depict's Kal-El's escape from Krypton, and offers a new twist on this iconic sequence which we're seeing for the first time in DC COMICS-THE NEW 52. WIRED ran the exclusive preview of the issue on their homepage, with a preview that was shared between their GEEKDAD and UNDERWIRE blogs.

USA TODAY previewed ANIMAL MAN #5 and interviewed series writer Jeff Lemire. "They don't want her put into harm's way," Lemire said of Buddy and Ellen and their powerful daughter, Maxine. "It's really that tension of knowing that they may have to give her up and the greater good might be something that they have to consider rather than just being a family, and whether or not they're willing to do that is going to cause a lot of tension in their marriage and a lot of tension just thematically moving forward."

GAWKER’s KOTAKU debuted five pages from DETECTIVE COMICS #5 and GAWKER’s IO9 has your first look at BATWING #5. Meanwhile, UGO posted the first four pages of JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL #5 and COMICVINE has a sneak peek at GREEN ARROW #5. Over at IGN, check out a sequence from MEN OF WAR #5. DC Comics All Access: Bob Harras

And so 2011 draws to a close.

By any definition, it was an incredibly successful year for us here at DC Comics. It was a year of excitement for anyone who loves comics.

Now, not to sound corny -- but the most important thing to us is that all of you who love and read DC Comics responded in such an incredibly positive way to The New 52.

We appreciate it. It's why we do what we do.

But 2011 was just the beginning. Next year will bring even more changes, more action and more surprises. The evolution of the DC Universe will continue and accelerate as events ripple across titles, impacting characters in unexpected ways.

For instance, check out next month's STORMWATCH, in which a devastating explosion will echo in upcoming issues of both GRIFTER and SUPERMAN, as a major new (yet somehow familiar) threat will be introduced.

And keep an eye on BIRDS OF PREY in the coming months, where Black Canary's long-held secrets will start to unravel.

And what exactly is Kid Flash's story? TEEN TITANS will explore that mystery early next year.

All that and more is coming in 2012.

So, best wishes for a Happy New Year from all of us at DC.

See you next year!

-- Bob Harras, Editor-in-Chief
