New Documentary 'Necessary Evil: Villains of DC Comics' Announced

Behind every great hero, there are a whole lot of villains.” – Geoff Johns

Legendary Villain Christopher Lee Narrates

The Joker, Bane, Deathstroke, Darkseid and Lex Luthor -- the scariest and most menacing villains in DC Comics’ universe -- take center stage in a brand new full-length documentary from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment (WBHE) and DC Entertainment (DCE). The joint announcement was made today by WBHE and DCE.

Christopher Lee, who has played the villain more times than almost any other actor, will provide his unique voice as narrator. His roles in more than 200 films include star turns as Dracula, the Mummy and Frankenstein’s monster in Hammer horror classics, Count Dooku in Star Wars, and Saruman in The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit films.

In this new documentary film, the malevolent, sometimes charismatic figures from DC Comics’ hallowed rogues’ gallery will be explored in depth, featuring interviews with the famed creators, storytellers and those who have crafted the personalities and profiles of many of the most notorious villains in comic book history.

Production begins March 30, to coincide with WonderCon at the Anaheim Convention Center March 29-31.

Noted Geoff Johns, best-selling author and DCE’s Chief Creative Officer, “DC Comics is known for many things, but chief among them is the compelling, diverse and legendary society of super-villains who populate its universe. From the monstrous Solomon Grundy to the brutal Black Adam to the charismatic Sinestro, there is no single greater collection of villainy in all of fiction. These villains are hugely popular comic book characters in their own right and, quite honestly, many are often times more popular than some of our iconic super heroes.”

Jeff Baker, WBHE’s Executive Vice President and General Manager, Theatrical Catalog, added “The DC brand is enjoying a huge resurgence thanks to the entire leadership team at DC Entertainment which is driving opportunities not only for new theatrical properties, but for brand extensions as well. This new documentary will reinforce this evolving strategy and leverage DC assets across the entire studio landscape.”

Johns also reiterated that this year’s initiative will be a turning point for DCE. “It’s time we deconstruct these complex and sinister antagonists and celebrate the role they play as the engine and energy of some of the greatest storytelling in comics. 2013 is the Year of the Villain at DC Comics.”

On Saturday, March 30th, fans attending WonderCon are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite DC Comics’ villain for an opportunity to be featured in the documentary. Fans can join DCE at WonderCon Booth 801 with filming to take place Saturday from 10:30 am – Noon. To find out more about where and what time to meet in the WonderCon DC Entertainment booth, keep checking the DC Comics Facebook (Facebook.com/DCComics) and Twitter sites (@DCComics).

Participation in upcoming ‘cons’ (Comic-Con International: San Diego and New York Comic Con) is anticipated, with a full release scheduled for later in the year.

Injustice: The Joker Gets His Close-Up

Earlier this month, the Joker was confirmed as a playable character in Injustice: Gods Among Us, the upcoming DC Comics fighting game from the creators of Mortal Kombat. However, while the images we’ve seen of him have certainly brought a smile to our faces, we haven’t gotten a great in-game shot of his deliriously disturbing grin. Until now, that is…

As a special Halloween treat for fans, and to send Super-Villains Month off in grand style, we present to you an exclusive new screenshot of Injustice’s Joker!

Click on the image to see it full-size.

Of course the Joker’s smiling, but something tells us if anyone's grinning after going a round with him, it's likely to be a fatal one. So what do you think? Can the Joker bring the pain? Or is this new fighter just fit for clowning around?

Celebrate Halloween DC Style

If you’re a DC fan, it really is going to be a happy Halloween. From a new batch of comics that just happen to be perfect for a little midnight reading (by candlelight, if you really want to go all out) to some fun Halloween treats that you can find right here on DCComics.com, we’re celebrating Halloween DC style, and we invite all of you to celebrate with us.

As you know, Halloween just happens to be on a Wednesday this year, and while that might put a damper on late night parties, it’s great if you’re a comic book fan. Wednesday is new comic book day, and you’ll notice that our slate today is particularly spooky. Even better, those books run the gamut from family friendly to turn-on-all-the-lights-and-break-out-the-happy-music terrifying, making there truly something in stores today for everyone, whether you’re a super hero fan or not.

Let’s take a look at what’s out today…

First, before you head to your local comic shop, login to the DC Digital Store and download the first installment of Batman: Li’l Gotham, a brand new, all-ages digital first series from the creative team of Dustin Nguyen and Derek Fridolfs. Yesterday, our brief article about Li’l Gotham received quite an enthusiastic response from Batman fans, and we’re excited to hear what they think of the first issue. If you missed yesterday’s post, you can read it here, or you can just go ahead and download the first installment of Batman: Li’l Gotham by clicking here.

Once you get to your shop, you’re going to want to keep an eye out for MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE: THE ORIGIN OF SKELETOR #1. This one-shot tells the complex and often frightening story of Skeletor’s origin, courtesy of writer Joshua Hale Fialkov (I, Vampire) and Frazer Irving (The Shade). It may take place in an entirely different world and universe than ours, but this horror-tinged tale cuts close to home.

Not quite dark enough for you? Then be sure to seek out Lot 13, the bloody good new horror miniseries by Steve Niles (30 Days of Night) and Glenn Fabry (Preacher).  And we do mean bloody. This comic follows one family as they make a disturbing discovery at an old abandoned apartment complex. You can check out a preview of the first issue here.

Over at Vertigo, prepare to be spooked by GHOSTS #1. This 80-page anthology comic features some of the biggest, best and most original writers and artists in comics joining together for the sole purpose of freaking us all out. Who’s responsible for our soon-to-be-sleepless Halloween night? How’s this list strike you? Jeff Lemire, Paul Pope, Gilbert Hernandez, Phil Jimenez, Cecil Castellucci, Geoff Johns (in his very first Vertigo project) and Joe Kubert. And that’s just start! You can check out a preview of this “spirited” new comic here.

There’s certainly no shortage of scary stuff, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing for the younger DC fans out there. In fact, there’s never been a better day to take your sons, daughters, nephews, nieces and little siblings to the comic shop—especially if your shop is participating in Diamond’s Halloween ComicFest. Why? Because they can get a free, full-size Batman/Scooby-Doo comic. (How’s that for an early treat?) Plus, many shops have cool Halloween events planned. You can find out more about Halloween ComicFest here, or just call your local shop.

Finally, we’d be lax if we didn’t point out that more than a few of our ongoing monthly comics promise some prime edge-of-your-seat reading as well. SWAMP THING ANNUAL #1 and JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK ANNUAL #1 offer super-sized stories and equally large-scale thrills. While at Vertigo, AMERICAN VAMPIRE #32 and THE NEW DEADWARDIANS #8 both present unique takes on the undead.

But not all of the fun is happening at the comic shop today. Here on DCComics.com, Halloween marks the last day of Super-Villains Month, and we’re wrapping things up in suitably sinister style. Surely you’ve noticed our updated homepage skin. That’s the work of the gifted Ryan Sook, and if you like what you see, you can get the full-size image at the DC Comics Facebook page.

We also just posted two remarkably villainous videos featuring the pumpkin-carving skills of Andy Bergholtz. Andy’s a sculptor who’s been making quite a splash around Halloween with his intricate and imaginative work with pumpkins. Be sure to check out our time-lapse videos of him carving an expressive Two-Face and a truly sinister Joker. All of a sudden, that vampire jack-o-lantern on our front porch is looking awfully sad…

Speaking of the Clown Prince of Crime, to celebrate the last day of Super-Villains Month, this morning we posted an exclusive new image of the Joker from the upcoming videogame Injustice: Gods Among Us. The image may have just gone up this morning, but that grin’s sure to haunt us well past Halloween…

Over on Twitter, we asked all of you to send us photos of your DC-inspired costumes and pumpkins, and you certainly responded. From "Commisioner Gourd-on" to lots of cute little super heroes, you're a fun and photogenic bunch. We put the photos together into a Facebook photo album to help get you in the Halloween spirit. Go on and check it out. And keep sending us your photos!

Finally, even if you live on the greatest street in the world, we’re pretty sure your bag of Halloween candy could never rival the treats you’ll take home if you’re the winner of the Big Score Sweepstakes. Today’s the last day to enter, so make sure you don’t miss out.

Whether you’re spending it trick-or-treating, partying with good friends and great witch’s brew or just staying in and watching Arrow, there’s much to enjoy from DC this Halloween. Stay safe, have fun and save us a jawbreaker!

2012's Super-Villains—The Votes are In!

Last week, we asked for your help in putting together the Ultimate Super-Villain Team. Many of our popular super-villains were in the running in nine distinctly different categories. The one thing they all had in common was a penchant for evil schemes and a willingness to lie, cheat and steal their way to the top.

Well, the votes are in, and while we can’t rule out ballot tampering or other shady business with this crew of candidates, we’re going to go on ahead and announce the winners. Ladies, gentlemen and super-villain lovers the world over, we now present to you 2012’s Ultimate Super-Villain Team…as chosen by you!

World Conqueror: Ra’s al Ghul

Maybe it’s because of his importance to Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight film trilogy, or maybe you all just have a thing for cool mustaches, but the Demon’s Head…ahem, headily rose to the top in the tough category of World Conqueror, beating out the likes of Black Adam, Vandal Savage, Gorilla Grodd and Black Manta. Perhaps it’s because years of life lead to years of experience, but something tells us he could wind up leading this team…or at least believing he does.

Evil Genius: Lex Luthor

Standing alongside Ra’s al Ghul is Lex Luthor, the clear winner in the Evil Genius category. Considering his popularity, there’s little shock to seeing Lex come out on top, though we wouldn’t be surprised if he manipulated his way to the win. Along with his intelligence (which is formidable), Lex also brings his sizeable bank account to the team, ensuring that any of their evil schemes will have the funding to find success. At least as long as Lex sees the team as a worthwhile investment…

Crime Boss: Penguin

Oswald Cobblepot received some not-so-friendly competition from Black Mask in this category, but pulled ahead for the win. Perhaps the thought of using the Iceberg Lounge as the team HQ resulted in a last minute show of support. Whatever the reason, the Penguin has the skills and the resources to oversee the group’s crime operations, even if it means they’ll also have to clean up after the occasional flightless Antarctic bird.

Mad Scientist: Scarecrow

Shaking off the likes of Mister Freeze and the Reverse-Flash, Dr. Jonathan Crane scared up the most votes in this category. While lacking the physical strength or super-human abilities of some of his fellow teammates, Scarecrow’s brilliant mind and warped sense of morality will help bring any seemingly impossible scheme the group concocts into the realm of the possible…and keep anyone unfortunate to cross their path running in terror.

Alien Overlord: Darkseid

When it comes to super-villains, there are more than a few who can be called “out of this world.” And yet, Darkseid clearly claimed the win in this category, destroying competitors such as Sinestro and Atrocitus (those power rings can construct plenty of things…but votes aren’t one of them). Let there be no disagreement, destroy is the right word to use here, since destruction is often all that’s left in his wake. Darkseid’s never been a team player and it’s unlikely he ever will be. So one has to suspect that if he’d ever consent to joining a team of super-villains, it’s part of a much bigger plan…one that would end not just with him taking control of the team, but pretty much all of existence.

Femme Fatale: Catwoman

Tempting as it is to say this team could really use a feminine touch, you really don’t want to touch Catwoman, unless you’re in the mood for one painful trip to the ER. While her ability to steal even the most tightly secure items is legendary, so is Selina Kyle’s relationship with a certain Dark Knight. Catwoman was the clear winner in this category (beating out a list of competitors that also including Talia al Ghul—Batman sure does like his Femme Fatales, doesn’t he?), but one has to wonder whether she’d work harder in support of the team or against it. As for her loyalty, well, it will almost certainly remain where it always has—to herself.

Monster: Doomsday

Perhaps it’s fear over what a Superman-killing super-villain would do if he lost. In what has to be seen as an upset in this election, Doomsday stole the win in this category, beating out a monstrous number of competitors that included Solomon Grundy, Clayface, The Demon, Bizarro and Killer Croc. While it’s highly unlikely that Doomsday would contribute much to the team’s strategy, the villain’s strength and destructive power is well documented, and it’s all-too-clear what Doomsday could become if he were to join this or any other super-villain team: their most dangerous weapon.

Mercenary: Deathstroke

Lethal, merciless and without equal, Deathstroke absolutely slayed the competition in the Mercenary category, which is fitting considering his occupation. Reputation and money are what seem to drive Slade Wilson, and being a part of a team of super-villains such as this one would bring both in spades. A team like this needs its muscle, and it’s hard to argue that Deathstroke wouldn’t bring that and more. Plus, anyone who’s read Team 7 knows that he can be a team player. For how long, though, remains to be seen.

Wild-Card: The Joker

Hands down (and face off) the Joker smashed his competitors in this category. That’s not hyperbole—this category wasn’t even close. With 79% of the vote, even his fan-favorite companion Harley Quinn couldn’t make much of a dent (and speaking of Dents, Two-Face didn’t fare much better). It’s hardly surprising. About the only thing you can predict when it comes to the Joker is his popularity. Beyond that, it’s anyone’s guess. But if anyone expects to be able to control the Clown Prince of Crime, the joke’s definitely on them, which makes one wonder how long he’d last on a team like this.

There you have it. The best of the DC bad guys, as chosen by all of you. So are you satisfied with the list? How long do you think this team would last, and what would ultimately prove to be their undoing? Feel free to post your thoughts and comments below!

DC Week-In-Review: October 26th

Some weeks are good, some are bad, but this one was absolutely villainous. We’ve been letting our super-villains take the spotlight, and have no doubt, it’s starting to have an effect. And not just on all of us here at DCComics.com. Even our talent seems to be talking up that guy with green hair and choosing their favorite evildoers. It’s resulted in one wild week of wicked news. Everything around here has been totally eeeevil this week. Fun and awesome, but still evil. Don’t believe us?

Here’s what went down this week on the DC Comics website…

We started things off by adding four new villains to our quickly growing rogue’s gallery. (Or character section, if you want to get technical.) Check out our new pages for Atrocitus, Brainiac, Scarecrow and Gorilla Grodd.

After that, we offered you a chance to rob us of an awesome and sure-to-be-valuable Fables card signed by Bill Willingham. Wait a minute… Does the Adversary know about this?

That same day we opened the floor to the truly nefarious folks in DC Collectibles for a new edition of Ask DC Collectibles. This month’s topic was action figures. You know, like the massive new Titan Joker figure, the Jim Lee-inspired Parademon or the soon-to-be-released, too awesome for words Darkseid deluxe figure that will own you all next month!

We also mentioned Diamond Comic Distributors’ Halloween ComicFest, which offers you a chance to snag a new Batman comic book for free. Can’t miss out on a score like that.

Super-villainy is becoming both a competitive and diverse career field, so it’s only natural you’d want to find the right area of it for you. Our new Super-Villains Personality Test is designed to do just that. Thousands of DC fans (and super-villains in training) have already taken it. Have you?

Once you’ve discovered what type of super-villain you are, you’ll likely want to start your own criminal empire. Well, take it from those of us who have been in the business for a while, you don’t want to do it in Gotham. There’s a whole mess of reasons why that’s a bad idea, but we’ve whittled them down to just 5.2.

In quite an impressive bit of news, Action Comics and Batman, Incorporated writer Grant Morrison has been named a Member of the British Empire. It’s a great honor, but a brilliant writer and professed fan of Lex Luthor such as Mr. Morrison is well deserving of it.

We also made sure a few of our upcoming annuals got their turn in the spotlight. After all, we would hate to see such up-and-coming baddies like Faust and Andrew Bennett miss their moment to shine in JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK ANNUAL #1 or fail to point out that our favorite feline-inspired thief is mixing it up with Batgirl in BATGIRL ANNUAL #1.

And speaking of Justice League Dark, did you see which member of our nefarious ranks is back from the dead in this week’s JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #13? Be sure to click here if you want to find out.

Finally, we thought we’d close out such a perfectly malevolent month by assembling the Ultimate Super-Villain Team. After all, the good guys are always banding together and forming teams devoted to justice. Why shouldn’t we villains be able to join in the fun? We’ve chosen the candidates, but they need your vote if they have any hope of making the cut. (And no, we’re not talking about literal cuts here. Dollmaker isn’t in the running.)

Quite a lot of troublemaking for such a short span of days. And to think, we haven’t even gotten to the weekend yet. That’s when we super-villains (and people who like to pretend we’re super-villains) really go wild. See you again in seven!

Elect the Ultimate Super-Villain Team

All month long we’ve been celebrating Super-Villains on DCComics.com, and for good reason—DC has some of the best bad guys in the biz!

But who are the baddest of the bad? The most super of the super-villains? Who should be a part of the most terrifying team in the entire DC Universe? We’re about to find out. Over the next few days, we’re asking you to help us put together the Ultimate DC Comics Super-Villain Team. We’ve placed some of our most formidable foes into categories to ensure that the team is diverse and well-rounded, but beyond that it’s up to you. Vote for your favorite super-villains below between now and 5 p.m. PST on Monday, October 29th. Then on October, 30th, visit DCComics.com for 2012’s Ultimate Super-Villain Team.

5.2 Reasons to Stay Away from Gotham (When Starting a Criminal Empire)

So you want to launch a criminal empire.

Maybe you really, really like money, but don't want to spend years toiling away at a job and earning it through "hard work" and "dedication." Maybe you really like the idea of being in charge and having minions to do your bidding—and the idea of monologues gets you as giddy as Cookie Monster locked in an Oreo factory. Maybe you seriously love the movie Scarface but totally missed the point of that film. Or maybe Super-Villains Month on DCComics.com has brought out a bit of your evil side—which we totally get (we recently saw a sign that said "No Loitering" and stood there for, like, 20 seconds!).

Whatever the reason, being bad just seems oh so good all of a sudden, and you’ve decided it's time you started your own villainous organization. Considering the amount of heroes that generally populate the DC Universe, we don't necessarily encourage this course of action, but to each their own. We won't judge. But we will offer this little piece of advice: DO NOT GO TO GOTHAM CITY. Seriously. Start your organization somewhere else.

Gotham may seem appealing—it’s already a breeding ground for crime and seems to have a revolving door policy on criminals—but don't be fooled. In fact, we’re here with 5.2 Reasons to Stay Away from Gotham (When Starting a Criminal Empire).

1. Batman

Honestly, this should be obvious. If you didn't know, there's a nocturnal enthusiast in Gotham that enjoys dressing like a bat, hopping around rooftops, and—most importantly to you—beating the ever-living tar out of criminals. This guy has a zero tolerance policy on crime and will use not only his fists to prove it but a whole array of gadgets and gizmos designed to disable even the toughest of foes—and believe us, there are some tough ones. He got his back broken and got better. He was jettisoned back in time as a quantum-leaping bomb and still figured a way out of it. Unless you have superpowers—and even then it probably wouldn't do you much good—he is not someone you want to tangle with.

2. Criminal Overpopulation

You never want to saturate the market. Stock goes down or whatever. We're not too sure how it works. We hide our money in squirrel nests—because if they can hide their acorns in our yard, we can hide our money in theirs. The point is that too many people competing for the same steal is bad for business, and Gotham gangs are incredibly territorial. It's not uncommon for wars to break out and one gang to eliminate another. In fact, there was an instance after an earthquake where that exact thing happened. But really the biggest gangs already belong to the biggest bads, and they would not hesitate to torture or kill anyone who tries to encroach on their territory—especially some upstart newcomer.

3. Costumed Villainy

Another trademark of the Gotham City criminals is their tendency toward the spectacle—namely dressing up in costumes and running amok throughout the city committing acts of themed villainy. The most powerful villains all have their own shtick, and if you really want to become someone in Gotham, you'll have to follow suit. However, all the really good ones are already taken: ice, birds, enigmas, Alice in Wonderland-based psychotic delusions. But hey, you could always be the next Balloon Master, committing crimes and leaving behind balloon animals as your calling card.

4. It's Full of Crazy People

Look, Gotham City is protected by a potentially unstable human being that dresses like a bat. So needless to say, its villainous population isn't exactly the sanest group of individuals. One guy commits crimes on holidays dressed in a costumed based on said holiday. (Google Calendar Man if you don't believe us.) But make no mistake: crazy as they may be, they are all incredibly dangerous. Going into Gotham, you're practically walking into a madhouse...

5. Arkham Asylum

...and then you get sent to an actual madhouse. Just about all of Gotham's worst villains get sent to Arkham eventually. And of course, they respond by eventually and often violently breaking out—leaving behind a path of death and chaos with a regularity that would make the sun rising every day seem like a freak occurrence. Arkham Asylum is not a place you want to be. Ever. Unless you enjoy living each day of your life in constant fear of a guy who thinks his ventriloquist dummy is real or a girl who not only spends every day talking to plants, but somehow gets them to do what she says. In which case, maybe you belong in there after all.

5.1 There's a 10-Year-Old That Can Beat You Up... And Will Gladly Do So

5.2 You Never, Ever, Ever Want to Run Into This Guy:

So as you can see, Gotham City might not be the best place to kickstart your criminal empire. Maybe you should try Metropolis... oh wait, they have Superman. Well, there’s Star Ci... Central or Keystone... no... You know what, maybe you just shouldn't start a criminal empire. We really don't think it's going to work out. Instead, keep visiting DCComics.com and live the bad life vicariously as Super-Villains Month continues!
