5.2 Reasons to Witness Superman: Unbound

On Tuesday, May 7, Superman: Unbound flies into stores, fully ready for upload into your brains via your eyeballs. Based on the SUPERMAN: BRAINIAC graphic novel by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank, the movie is the latest in the line of DC Universe Animated Original Movies, following the critically acclaimed Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 1 and Part 2, Justice League: Doom, Wonder Woman and more.

And we got to see it already. It’s one of the awesome perks of the job, along with the comics... and free ice cream on Mondays, rides on the Invisible Jet on Tuesdays, Batman-impersonation contests on Wednesdays, and now Injustice tournaments on Fridays, complete with a one-week bragging rights voucher (what now Jerry?!).

Okay, we feel pretty bad for teasing you like that—so we’re going to tease you even more (but in the good way) by sharing what we learned from our advanced viewing and giving you the 5.2 Reasons to Witness Superman: Unbound!

1. Matt Bomer as Superman

Along with looking exactly the part, White Collar star Matt Bomer actually auditioned for the role of the Man of Steel in Superman Returns back in the day, and while he ended up losing out to Brandon Routh, it’s quite excellent to see him take on the role here. His voice resonates the perfect level of authority and charm, reminiscent of George Newbern of Justice League and Justice League Unlimited.

2. John Noble as Brainiac

It’s pretty much a no-brainer. You hear that Fringe’s John Noble (a.k.a. freakin’ Denethor from Lord of the Rings) voices the Man of Steel’s super-smart, super-dangerous alien adversary and you immediately think, “Well, clearly, he’s going to be fantastic.” This is entirely accurate. He’s amazing.

3. Stana Katic, Molly Quinn... the Entire Voice Cast, Really

Stana Katic plays Lois Lane exactly as she should be—courageous, snarky, and not only opinionated but also not afraid to make sure you’re aware of it—and Molly Quinn brings an angry innocence to Kara that perfectly fits her stranger-in-a-strange land backstory. Supergirl in general is very, very awesome, which reminds us...

4. PG-13, Indeed!

From heads getting exploded by invading Brainiac drones to Supergirl and Superman wrecking shop in Brainiac’s ship, there is a lot of action to be found in this film. Even the staff of the Daily Planet gets in on it—tossing drones out the window. However, “sequences of violence and action” aren’t the only reason for the rating: the DVD case also teases “a rude gesture,” which received a HUGE round of applause when Superman: Unbound debuted this year at WonderCon and makes for one of the most memorable and greatest moments from the movie.

5. Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox

Get a first look at the next DC Universe Animated project heading to home video later this summer. The cast list alone causes the excitement-o-meter to head off the scale. All we’ll say is the movie features one of the cast members from The Princess Bride, which is enough to make it a must buy.

5.1 Jimmy Olsen Wearing his Signature Bowtie

5.2 “Welcome to Earth”

Whether spoken by Will Smith in Independence Day or the Man of Steel here, this line never gets old.

COMIC BOOK RESOURCES Catches Up With Bob Harras and Bobbie Chase

In case you missed it, last month COMIC BOOK RESOURCES launched a new regular monthly column where they talk all things DC Entertainment with Editor-in-Chief Bob Harras and Editorial Director Bobbie Chase.

Yesterday, COMIC BOOK RESOURCES ran their second installment of B+B. Here are some of the highlights:

“I think the readers should pay attention to all the Bat books in the next few months, because a lot of things are happening. To say the old cliché, you ain't seen nothing yet! I think what we have coming up is really going to entertain, amaze and shock readers,” Harras teased about the events in the “Batman” family of books following the conclusion of the crossover event, “Death of the Family.”

“Continuing in the pattern the Annuals have in the New 52, where they really spotlight major events [and] major story points in the regular books, they kick off something with their characters,” Chase said of some of the new Annuals hitting shelves this spring. “A lot of the regular writers or writers involved in the projects are working on them.”

Head on over to COMIC BOOK RESOURCES to read the full interview, including the exclusive scoop on exciting new creative teams for BATWING, LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES, SUPERBOY, and SUPERGIRL, new Annuals coming out for BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT, CATWOMAN, EARTH 2, RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS, and more!

This Just Happened: Supergirl’s Unexpected Kiss

SPOILER ALERT: If you have not read SUPERGIRL #15 and do not wish to know what happens, stop reading this post now (major spoilers ahead!)

In “H’el On Earth,” Superman has come face to face with his worst nightmare: a creature of unknown Kryptonian origin who is not only more powerful than the Man of Steel, but smarter than Supergirl and more lethal than Superboy. Currently spanning across the pages of SUPERMAN, SUPERBOY and SUPERGIRL, this crossover event unites all of these super-beings for the first time in DC COMICS – THE NEW 52 and puts them into battle with the maniacal alien, H’el, who will stop at nothing to bring back Krypton from extinction ... even at the expense of Earth!

To all those he meets, H’el claims that he is a space explorer sent on a mission by Jor-el (also known as the father of Superman) to safeguard the accumulated science and culture of Krypton aboard his ship when the destruction of his home planet became imminent. As a result of his travels through space, H’el has been transformed and now remains a grotesque version of the man he used to be. But when all hope seemed lost, he discovered that two lost children of Krypton were living on Earth: Superman and Supergirl.

Upon his arrival on Earth, H’el reaches out to Superman and Supergirl to ask for their assistance in the resurrection of Krypton. Supergirl seems eager to help while Superman remains hesitant about H’el’s true intentions. In a confrontation of epic proportions, H’el produces a prisoner to prove his knowledge of Krypton and its controversial past – a clone just like the ones who nearly destroyed the planet years ago: Superboy!

To gain the trust of Superman, H’el offers to kill the clone. In a moment of fury, the Man of Steel lashes out against H’el in order to save the boy and H’el uses the opportunity to lure Supergirl away from Superman. And in SUPERGIRL #15, H’el banishes Superman and Superboy from the Fortress of Solitude while he takes Kara on a tour of Kandor to gain her trust and allegiance.

“Kal is the ‘Last Son of Krypton,’ but he never really knew it like Kara and H’el did,” writer Mike Johnson told COMIC BOOK RESOURCES. “The things H’el does that bother Kal don’t bother Kara in the same way, because she can understand and sympathize with H’el’s motivations. One of the many cool things about the crossover is that each title has its own unique role to play.”

The tour ends with H’el promising Supergirl that if his plan succeeds she can return to the Krypton she once knew. For the first time since coming to Earth, Kara has found someone that truly understands her hopes and dreams. And as H’el and Supergirl stand alone in the Fortress of Solitude, the thought of their return to Krypton unites them – not only as allies but as something much more.

In that moment, H’el and Supergirl kiss for the first time! Could this be the start of a Kryptonian romance? And more importantly, what will Superman do when he finds out about his cousin and his new enemy’s developing relationship!? Place your bets in the comments section!

Below, take a look at the final page of SUPERGIRL #15 as H’el and Supergirl share a kiss in the Fortress of Solitude. And don’t forget to pick up your copy of the issue, in stores now!

5.2 Reasons We’re Addicted to Our Super-Heroines

BATGIRL #14 hit comic shops this week, and reading that issue reminded us of exactly how strong Barbara Gordon is—both in the physical sense (we'd last about three seconds doing what she does, as that's probably how long it would take for us to fall over and curl into the fetal position) and in the sense of being just a fantastic, all-around-amazing example of a great, well-written female character.

In fact, we here at DC love our female characters. We love them in the totally respectable "we love to read them" way…and, uh…not in the weird "they're printed on our cuddle pillow" way. From the super-strong to the willfully powerful to even the psychotically malicious, we've got some of the most fun, creative and widely recognizable female characters in comics—heck, pop culture, even—and every week a number of them prove their awesomeness by taking center stage in some of the best titles currently on shelves.

Whether via comic books, toys or collectibles, it truly is a great time to be a fan of the DCU females. We’re certainly in that camp. You could even say we have a bit of a heroine addiction. It’s one addiction we’re very proud to have. So proud, in fact, that we’re listing off the 5.2 Reasons We’re Addicted to Our Super-Heroines!

1. Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman has been around since 1941 and she still looks great—especially with Cliff Chiang drawing her monthly in the pages of the critically acclaimed and brilliantly written Wonder Woman series by Brian Azzarello. Infusing Greek mythology with superheroics, Azzarello has crafted a Wonder Woman tale that encompasses everything that makes the character great and conveys it all through a tone vastly different from what's come before—one a little more mature and sophisticated while still balancing superhero adventure and fantasy. From her compassion and strength of character to her, you know, actual strength and general badassery, it's really no wonder we love Wonder Woman.

2. Bats and Cats and Birds (Oh My!)

When it comes to strong female characters, like with all things, Batman has it covered. From the feline fatale Catwoman to the aforementioned butt-kicking Batgirl to the all-female team the Birds of Prey (whose member Katana will soon be getting her own ongoing) to the Batwoman and even the Huntress (and by extension her BFF Power Girl), the female members of the Bat Family almost make us want to go to Gotham and commit a crime just so we can experience their awesomeness firsthand. We don't think we'd be able to handle the hospital bills, though.

3. Amaya, Princess of House Amethyst

Although a newer member of DC COMICS – THE NEW 52, Amaya of House Amethyst (appearing monthly in the pages of Sword of Sorcery) had us along for the ride from the get-go—simply by way of its cool creative team—but once the story’s action took us to Gemworld, things took a turn toward Awesome Town (about 28 miles outside of Crazy Town and a few stops away from Amazingville). Amaya’s hilarious sarcasm and "what am I even doing here" attitude brings a great level of fun and teenage cynicism to an already entertaining fantasy adventure.

4. Ame-Comi

We've been really big fans of the Ame-Comi line of statues for quite some time. From the extremely creative designs to the fun little details, they're a great addition to our shrine of nerdiness (also known as, you know, our office). But what's even more excellent is that their popularity spawned a new digital first series Ame-Comi Girls, which features characters inspired by the line. It's a really fun read scripted by the All-Star Western team of Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray, and each installment gets us excited about who is going to appear next and what twist to classic comic mythos and characters will occur.

5. Kickass Co-Stars

Whether we’re talking about the water-controlling warrior queen Mera from the pages of Aquaman, the alluring, if psychotic Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad, the face-punching powerhouse Cassie Sandsmark in Teen Titans, or Horsewoman, Exoristos and Shining Knight from Demon Knights, you don't have to headline a title to steal the show.

5.1 The Awesomeness that is Supergirl

5.2 The Upcoming Return of Stargirl

Nothing like awesome comics and stunning statues to feed our little Heroine addiction. So what are your reasons for loving DC’s heroines? Let us know in the comments!

5.2 Reasons it's a Great Time to be a Superman Fan

You ever hear of this Superman guy? Faster than a speeding bullet? Powerful enough to launch a locomotive into space by dropkicking it in its face? Able to leap tall buildings by just flying right over them—basically, pointing at gravity and laughing? Ha! Gravity.

Yeah, just about everyone’s heard of Superman, and if you haven’t then let us be the first to welcome you to Earth! It's a fun place—scary at times—filled with wondrous and magical things, like bite-sized pizza snacks and comic books and cartoons and a whole Internet full of dancing kittens. Trust us, you’re going to love those…even if you aren’t exactly sure why.

But in all seriousness, if you are a Superman fan or if you've been looking for a good time to metaphorically take a peek inside the Fortress of Awesomitude, now's the time. Mark your calendars, tack a note onto your Pinterest board (not literally, though, cause then you'd have a hole in your screen), and do a little dance in a bright red cape because there’s never been a better time to be a Superman fan. In fact, let’s count off the 5.2 Reasons it's a Great Time to be a Superman Fan!

1. Superman: Earth One

Yesterday saw the release of SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE Vol. 2, the second Superman installment in the graphic novel line that reinterprets and reintroduces classic characters for new readers. In the book's first volume, writer J. Michael Straczynski introduced a Man of Steel trying to find his place in the world and ultimately discovering one he never quite expected. It boiled down the essence of both Superman and Clark Kent and mixed it into a modern day context, exploring the emotional and personal struggle that comes with being an outsider. With Vol. 2, things get CRAZY—and we mean in that in the greatest way possible. A well-known Superman villain makes his debut, the Man of Steel makes a moral choice that had our jaws on the floor and there's a part with a childhood pet that brought a tear to our eye (it’s always the pets!). That’s to say nothing about the twist at the end involving a certain infamous villain that left us salivating for more…

2. Huge, Game-Changing Stories

We're talking so big they could collapse under their own weight and cause an explosion so huge it'll rip the very fabric of space and time and bend it to its will. Exaggeration? Maybe. But for a long time, these were two truths about Superman: he worked at the Daily Planet and he loved Lois Lane. Well friends, these times are a changing. Most recently in SUPERMAN #13, Clark Kent left the Daily Planet, and as of JUSTICE LEAGUE #12, Superman's now dating Wonder Woman. Say what you will about Lois Lane and whether or not she's the only one for the Man of Steel, the storytelling potential alone in this coupling is over 9,000. Which is what makes both these things so exciting—the stories set to be told look amazing!

3. H'El on Earth

Of course, Superman won't be flying solo in the days ahead. Since the launch of DC COMICS—THE NEW 52, the Superman family of titles have remained more or less separate, with both Superboy and Supergirl following their own individual storylines. But with the "H'El on Earth" crossover, the sons and daughters and half-clones of Krypton finally get together for some good old-fashioned fun—and by fun we mean dealing with a dangerous new Kryptonian threat and some very conflicting viewpoints on how to handle the situation. We're positive the latter will be handled with hugs. Lots of face-punching, heat-vision-enforced hugs.

4. Supergirl Kicks "S"

If you haven't been reading Supergirl, you need to go here now and start. Seriously. We've been fans of writer Mike Johnson ever since his Lil' League arc on Superman/Batman (with art by American Vampire's Rafael Albuquerque) and unsurprisingly, he has been doing an amazing job on the Girl of Steel's self-titled series, penning a young Kara Zor-El that feels like a real teenaged girl lost in a world she barely understands—like "Alice in Wonderland," if Alice had superpowers and beat up the Queen of Hearts for being a crazy person and threatening the lives of pretty much everyone. It's a phenomenally well-written series only further enhanced by the incredibly beautiful art by Mahmud Asrar.

In fact, when it comes to all the Superman family of titles...

5. Amazing Artists All Around

We mentioned Mahmud Asrar, but we also have RB Silva on Superboy, Shane Davis on Superman: Earth One, Tony S. Daniel coming to Action Comics and now Kenneth Rocafort on the core Superman title. It's art so gorgeous you'll want to stab your eyes out because you'll never see something so breathtaking again (though please, for Rao's sake, DO NOT stab your eyes out).

And the Super-fan fun doesn't stop here. It continues well into next year, with two projects that look to take us up, up and away into the stratosphere of excellence:

5.1 The Man of Steel

5.2 Scott Snyder. Jim Lee.

If that Jim Lee image has you dying to find out more, be sure to check out the video we shot with this creative dream team at New York Comic-Con. Now, we're going to head out because we're pretty sure traffic on our drive home won't be moving faster than a speeding bullet. But feel free to sound off about which of the super titles you're enjoying the most in comments below, and let us know which upcoming one you're most looking forward to.
