Chris Burnham on the Variant Cover for ACTION COMICS #7

In ACTION COMICS #7, Superman’s powers will be tested to new extremes when he attempts to save Metropolis and its citizens.

Below, take an exclusive first look at BATMAN, INCORPORATED artist Chris Burnham’s variant cover for the issue. We caught up with Burnham to ask him a little bit about his creative process, his influences and how he adapted writer Grant Morrison’s story for this stunning piece of art.

“My initial instinct upon reading the issue was to do something with the bottled cities of Metropolis & Kandor,” Burnham exclusively told THE SOURCE. “I LOVE the bottled city of Kandor. A few years ago I was at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh with my then-3-year-old nephew, Noah. We stumbled upon this incredible sculpture exhibition by the late great Mike Kelley. The exhibit is simply called 'Kandor' and features dozens of astounding renditions of the bottled city. Google it. It's amazing. And well worth tracking down in person if you get the chance. It was my favorite part of the museum and it was Noah's too! I literally had to drag him out of there kicking and screaming after we'd spent almost an hour in there. Kandor love runs in the family!

ANYHOW. Rags had already done an excellent job with a literal approach to the bottled city idea, so I decided to go a little more conceptual. The pieces all fell into place for a good, old-fashioned split cover! Superman torn between two worlds! Kandor and Metropolis! Nature and nurture! Teflon and cotton!

The cover also gave me the chance to work with the incomparable Gene Ha's astoundingly complicated designs for Krypton and Kandor. It was a great challenge to be true to his vision without straight-up tracing what he'd already drawn. Did I pull it off? You decide!”

ACTION COMICS #7 goes on sale on March 7th. And don’t miss Burnham’s next collaboration with Grant Morrison on BATMAN, INCORPORATED #1, in stores May 23rd.

ARTISTS GENE HA AND CULLY HAMNER EXPLORE PARALLEL EARTHS IN ACTION COMICS #9

With ACTION COMICS #9, two acclaimed guest artists will explore an alternate Earth and the story of its Kryptonian protector. Multiple Eisner Award-winning artist Gene Ha will be a guest artist for the primary plot, penned by regular series writer Grant Morrison. And fresh from his recent work on THE SHADE miniseries, artist Cully Hamner will illustrate the issue’s back-up story, written by Sholly Fisch.

Parallel worlds come to the forefront of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 “Second Wave,” with titles such as EARTH 2 and WORLDS’ FINEST exploring the adventures of heroes on alternate Earths. ACTION COMICS #9 sets up the multiverse with a standalone story of a Superman from another Earth, who must fight a monster from yet another parallel world. But this isn’t just any monster; it’s a Superman surrogate known as Superdoom, twisted into an unstoppable agent of evil.

The back-up story will also feature an adventure of this alternate Superman, set on his parallel Earth.

Regular series artist Rags Morales will return for ACTION COMICS #10 in June. In the meantime, check out Ha’s inks for ACTION COMICS #9.

It's the End of the World!!!

Again.

In other words, Happy New Year 2012! This is the year that when December 21 hits, keeping any resolutions won't matter because it all goes apocalyptic!

So what's our mood here at DC? To paraphrase our pal Alfred E. Neuman from MAD, "What, us worried?"

Hardly. Doomsdays are what makes for great stories, and even a cool character here at DC! This just gives us fodder for story material.

So as we start our 5th issues, the end is penultimately near on JL's first arc with Mr. Apokolips himself: Darkseid! Catastrophe strikes in STORMWATCH, and Superman and Grifter will be picking up the pieces in their respective books.

And the coming months look no better for our heroes as the Court of Owls reaches out with their Talons, bringing an end of days to the Batman family. There's a bitter cold end for the Flash when Captain Cold hits Central City. What does it mean to the future when the Teen Titans and Legion Lost meet, or when O.M.A.C. comes to JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL? What happens when the first vampire rises? Will JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK and I, VAMPIRE fall? Is there any hope as the all-consuming Rot moves across ANIMAL MAN and SWAMP THING?

Yup, like I said, the end is only the beginning. This is going to be a great year for DC Comics! Enjoy the Cataclysm, everyone. We are happy to bring it to you!

DC Comics All Access: Bob Harras

And so 2011 draws to a close.

By any definition, it was an incredibly successful year for us here at DC Comics. It was a year of excitement for anyone who loves comics.

Now, not to sound corny -- but the most important thing to us is that all of you who love and read DC Comics responded in such an incredibly positive way to The New 52.

We appreciate it. It's why we do what we do.

But 2011 was just the beginning. Next year will bring even more changes, more action and more surprises. The evolution of the DC Universe will continue and accelerate as events ripple across titles, impacting characters in unexpected ways.

For instance, check out next month's STORMWATCH, in which a devastating explosion will echo in upcoming issues of both GRIFTER and SUPERMAN, as a major new (yet somehow familiar) threat will be introduced.

And keep an eye on BIRDS OF PREY in the coming months, where Black Canary's long-held secrets will start to unravel.

And what exactly is Kid Flash's story? TEEN TITANS will explore that mystery early next year.

All that and more is coming in 2012.

So, best wishes for a Happy New Year from all of us at DC.

See you next year!
