12 "Holy Smoke!" Moments in Comics from 2012, Part 2

Over the past few weeks, “Best of” lists dominated the Interwebs—ranging from music to television to, of course, comic books. We even made a blog post linking a few of them that featured some of the great DC titles from THE NEW 52, Vertigo, and more.

Yesterday, we posted the first half of our own list celebrating the awesomeness of DC Comics in 2012 with the 12 "Holy Smoke!" Moments in Comics from 2012—six moments that had us screaming in excitement and surprise and that pumped us full of unbridled fan-thusiasm. It’s like regular enthusiasm covered with a healthy dose of fantasticness!

Today, we finish up our list with the final six "Holy Smoke!" Moments in Comics from 2012!

Aquaman’s Gonna Need a Bigger Boat

For anyone who doesn’t like venturing into the ocean, this moment is probably one of your biggest fears. You’re swimming along—an act of which the sole purpose is to make sure you don’t die—when all of a sudden you look behind you and you see rows of giant white gleaming fangs. This is exactly the situation a young Arthur Curry found himself in while diving into the deep in AQUAMAN #0. Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, indeed.

Penguins Can't Fly
From the first image released of Alfred of BATMAN: EARTH ONE fans knew one thing for sure: this it not the Alfred we’re used to seeing. Needless to say, Alfred proved how much of a badass he was throughout the entirety of the Geoff Johns-penned OGN. But without a doubt, the ultimate "Holy smoke!" moment came during the book’s climax when Alfred blew the Penguin out the window with a shotgun. Jaw-dropping and insanely awesome.

Superman Goes Home
SUPERMAN #0 presented an interesting tale stunning illustrated by Kenneth Rocafort that explored the lives of Jor-El and Lara as the pair discovered not only that Lara was pregnant with the would-be Man of Steel, but that Krypton was doomed. However, the real twist came at the end, when we observed Superman on the planet during this time. How he got there and what it means is still yet to be seen, but he was wearing a costume similar to the one in the promo image for Andy Diggle and Tony Daniel's upcoming run on Action Comics.

Gods, Old and New
This was a bit of a tough one. With a single splash page, Brian Azzarello capped off his first year on Wonder Woman with a literal "BOOM," one that sent fans into a frenzy of delight and excitement. It seemed impossible for him to top it, but with the very next issue—WONDER WOMAN #0—he did it through sheer ingenuity. Not only did Azzarello present a wonderfully engaging flashback story beautifully illustrated by Cliff Chiang, but he also told it in a very clever way through Golden Age-style narration.

The One Who Knocks
We’ve been anxiously anticipating the Joker’s return to Gotham ever seen he disappeared at the end of DETECTIVE COMICS #1. Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo sent chills down our collective spines in BATMAN #13 and made sure to keep the Joker in the shadows until the climatic final scene. The issue ended with the Joker revealed in all his gory glory... while attacking Alfred at Wayne Manor. It was a moment that immediately set the stage and raised the stakes for this Batman epic.

Trinity War
The DC COMICS—THE NEW 52 FREE COMIC BOOK DAY special answered some questions and asked one really, really big one (with a really, really big gatefold illustration): what is the Trinity War?

Saw anything we missed? What were YOUR favorite DC Comics moments from 2012? Let us know in the comments below!

12 "Holy Smoke!" Moments in Comics from 2012, Part 1

Over the past few weeks, “Best of” lists dominated the Interwebs—ranging from music to television to, of course, comic books. We even made a blog post linking a few of them that featured some of the great DC titles from DC COMICS—THE NEW 52, Vertigo and more.

The reason for this is simple. Without question, 2012 was a great year for comic readers, filled with gripping storytelling, unexpected plot twists, and edge-of-your seat action and excitement. All that, plus a whole lot of moments that made our jaws drop and had us exclaiming "Holy smoke!" out loud. (Actually, it led to us saying something a lot less PG…but there may be kids reading. In which case, “Hey kids! Comics!”) Sometimes the exclamation is over surprise. Sometimes it’s because it gets us excited for what’s to come. Whatever it is, it’s almost certainly awesome.

So, with all of those jaw-dropping moments and “Best of” lists going around, we figured we’d combine the two in a special two-part, two-day feature listing 12 "Holy Smoke!" Moments in Comics from 2012!

Trickster Lends Grodd a Hand
Gorilla Grodd finally made his New 52 debut, and this sinister simian is just as brutal and violent as we remember. In FLASH #13, Trickster attempts to finagle his way into Grodd's good graces. Of course, Grodd has no good graces, so that encounter ended about as well as you would expect.

Batman Arrives in Smallville
Throughout its 10-season run, the CW television series Smallville contained many a nerdy moment for comic book fans with appearances of various characters from across the DC Universe—the JSA (Stargirl!) and the Legion of Super-Heroes, Green Arrow and Black Canary, and, of course, the Flash, Cyborg and Aquaman. However, one heavy hitter never showed his cowl-covered face—until the digital first Season 11 brought the Dark Knight to the world of Smallville.

Andrew Bennett Breaks Bad

It’s fair to say that un-death hasn’t exactly been easy for Andrew Bennett. Over the past year, he’s been hunted, beheaded and resurrected as the vampire messiah, and that’s to say nothing about his extremely troubled relationship with the Queen of the Vampires. However, while readers of I, VAMPIRE may not expect an easy road for Andrew, we’re not sure anyone anticipated the ending of issue #12, which saw Andrew save the world by absorbing the dark magic at the root of vampirism, turning every other vampire on Earth back into a mortal. However, in a final shocking twist, we learned doing so had made Andrew both extremely powerful and very, very evil—effectively turning the hero of the series into the villain.

Death of the Trinity
In the months leading up to the launch of Earth 2, writer James Robinson discussed at length the Big Three of that world and how they differed from their main Earth counterparts. He also warned readers not to assume or expect anything based on what's come before. He wasn't kidding. In a bold move pretty much nobody saw coming, the first issue featured the last stand of the book's three stars—Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman—who gave their lives attempting to save the world from the hordes of Darkseid.

The Gray Son
The "Night of the Owls" event that ran through the Bat-books was the first crossover of DC COMICS—THE NEW 52, and it was filled with fantastic, fast-paced moments of action and brilliantly shocking reveals. Batman's connection to the Court and the revelation of his potential sibling left us completely stunned. But equally as shocking was the surprise revelation of Dick Grayson's family history and how the greatest tragedy of his life actually saved him from a gruesome fate.

Green Lantern's Dying Light
Comic readers are no strangers to death in comics, but seeing Hal Jordan and Sinestro (two longtime enemies now working together—which is awesomeness in-and-of itself) take on a horde of zombies and then sacrifice themselves while facing the Black Hand was just plain cool. Plus, it gave rise to the newest member of the Green Lantern Corps—Simon Baz!

Scott Lobdell Talks SUPERMAN #16 and "H'El on Earth"

Last month, readers were shocked as the “H’El on Earth” crossover delivered a huge twist: a budding relationship between the maniacal H’El and the homesick Supergirl (for more about that and for a re-cap of the crossover event thus far, click here).

If you picked up SUPERMAN #15 when it hit shelves yesterday, you already know who the Man of Steel will turn to for help to put a stop to H’El and his destructive plan: The Justice League. But when the World’s Greatest Superheroes go to the battlefield against Kara and her Kryptonian ally in this month’s issue #16, will Superman be able to stop his cousin before it’s too late for our planet?

“There's a fight coming up between Flash and Supergirl, and when it was originally being written, one of the initial thoughts was, well, Flash is a member of the Justice League, so Kara would have to think twice about going up against these powerful heroes,” writer Scott Lobdell teased to NEWSARAMA about the upcoming SUPERMAN #16. “But again, that's just not true with these characters. As far as I can tell, Kara has been on Earth for about three weeks and hasn't met the Justice League. And she sees them as a bunch of people in costumes with kind of limited superpowers. As far as she's concerned, a group of people trying to express authority over her when she's trying to get Krypton back on its feet, she would have no personal regard or even respect for the Justice League.”

For more from Lobdell about SUPERMAN #16 and “H’El on Earth,” check out the full interviews that run today with the writer in MTV GEEK, COMIC VINE, and NEWSARAMA. And don’t forget to visit all three outlets for sneak peeks at Kenneth Rocafort’s interior art for SUPERMAN #16, which flies into stores on January 30th.

DC Comics' 2012 Hall of Fame: Best (Super) Power Couple

2012 was a great year for DC and our fans. Whether it was in the pages of our comics, on the big or small screen or on the floor of our booth at Comic-Con, 2012 was a year of unforgettable moments. Some were thrilling, some were funny and others left us absolutely breathless. In a year full of moments that won’t be forgotten, these are some of the best. Introducing 2012’s DC Comics’ Hall of Fame!

Who doesn’t dream of being swept off their feet in a passionate embrace? Unfortunately, for most of us, that’s just an expression. We’ll never be swept off of our feet literally.

Of course, none of us are Superman and Wonder Woman.

While we certainly did our part to spread the word about our newest power couple and their super-smooch in JUSTICE LEAGUE #12, DC fans did plenty of talking about it on their own. Whether or not you’re in favor of this new coupling, it’s hard to deny the impact it had on DC COMICS – THE NEW 52 and on the two heroes. There’s a new spring in their step and a new importance to what they’re fighting for. We may have seen Superman and Wonder Woman fly in the past, but this is the first time we’ve seen them walking on air.

New "Man of Steel" Image Released

An intriguing new image has been released for “Man of Steel,” next summer’s eagerly anticipated Superman movie. Unlocked by fans in anticipation of tomorrow’s DVD and Blu-Ray release of “The Dark Knight Rises,” the image features Superman as portrayed by Henry Cavill in full costume, but with a surprising accessory… Handcuffs.

Look for “Man of Steel” to soar into theaters on June 14, 2013.

Superman Beyond Faces the Heat

Superman has always been a force for good in the world, saving the planet from the most lethal and destructive forces imaginable. That’s who he is, and even in the futuristic world of Superman Beyond, it hasn’t changed. But starting with tomorrow’s exciting SUPERMAN BEYOND #11, he’s going about it in an entirely new way.

After decades in the public eye as the world’s most famous super hero, the Man of Steel is taking on a new secret identity and a new career. Introducing Kal Kent, Metropolis’ newest firefighter.

“When DC asked me about doing Superman Beyond, the first arc quickly became a story about Superman finding his place in a world where most of his friends and family have died,” explains J.T. Krul, the writer of the popular digital first comic. “He felt out of place, alone and isolated. What he came to realize is that it wasn't Superman that was without a life – there would always be a need for the world's greatest super hero. Rather, it was Clark Kent who found himself on the outside of the bubble looking in to a world that he was no longer a part of.

“He needed a new identity and a new path. Say hello to Kal Kent.”

With a lifespan longer than that of a human, it’s hardly surprising that Kal-El would have to reinvent himself occasionally to maintain his secret identity. In the world of Superman Beyond, this eventually led to him leaving the Daily Planet and his life as a reporter behind to essentially become a full-time super hero for many years. However, he eventually realized that this left him without the human connection that his secret identity provided. So now, years after leaving his last “day job,” Kal-El's decided that it's time for him to go back to work.

While this new career path and new identity may seem like a dramatic change from that of “mild-mannered Clark Kent,” it makes a lot of sense when you break it down, says Krul.

“We quickly decided that he would leave the world of reporting behind, due in part to the changing dynamic of that career – he wasn't interested in writing stories encapsulated in a 140-character tweet.  So the question was asked… What career would our new man of Metropolis choose?

“The answer came quickly – firefighter. Think about it. Firefighters are the ultimate first responders, called in to any and every situation. But unlike, say, police officers, firefighters are not there to lay down the law or pass judgment, figuring out who was right or wrong. They are simply there to help – to save the day. Sound familiar?”

A game-changing storyline like this deserves an amazing cover, and Superman Beyond’s crack team of artists proved more than up to the task with Superman Beyond #11’s fiery first screen.

“When designing the cover for this issue, we wanted to introduce Superman's new career by paying homage to the classic images of the transformation between Clark Kent and Superman,” series penciler Howard Porter elaborates. “We witness our hero ripping open his suit to reveal the Superman symbol on his chest, but we see that Clark ‘Kal’ Kent has traded his blue suit and tie in for a somewhat traditional firefighter suit with a twist. The suit has been infused with various technological updates, most notably the holographic visor which can both protect and relay information. Also, even though the need for glasses in the future might be eliminated, we decided to keep a futuristic version of Kent's iconic eyewear. After all, Mr. Kent is an old fashioned guy with a fortress full of nostalgia and if he could, he would probably craft e-mails using a vintage typewriter.”

Series colorist Carrie Strachan concurs. “I was excited to get started when I was sent this cover; it's so dynamic! I love how it's a slight skewing of the classic ‘Clark rips open his shirt to reveal the Superman insignia on his costume’ pose. (Hey, do you think people were constantly finding discarded suits all over Metropolis or did Superman go back and get them?)

“Anyway, the challenge with this cover was to make sure that Clark didn't get lost in all that fire. So, I had to make the fire and the room a little more red than I normally would and Clark's suit a little more yellow. The light from the camera on Clark's helmet also helps pull the viewer's eye toward the white Superman symbol. (I love the little futuristic touch of the camera in Clark's helmet, by the way.)”

Of course, if you’re worried that Superman Beyond is going to turn into a futuristic spin on Chicago Fire, Krul says you can let those worries…well…go up in smoke. This is a Superman comic, after all.

“Kal Kent’s straight-forward ‘do good’ attitude is put to the test in this new story as actions from Superman's past come back to haunt him,” he teases. “Problems aren't always back-and-white. They are complex and messy, and so can be the solutions (if they even exist). Once many years ago, Superman tried to make a difference on another alien planet, but the fallout from his actions has left scars, and now those he affected – the Trillians – have come looking for a bit of their own justice.”

Some early Trillian designs by Porter

A new secret identity, firefighting action and vengeful aliens to boot. It’s pretty hard to imagine how any Superman fan could pass that up, but if anyone needs further convincing, Krul offers up one last tidbit about the storyline: “Oh yeah, and the Trillians brought Lobo with them for some added muscle.”

Take a gander at these pages from tomorrow’s new chapter, and then be sure to download Superman Beyond #11 tomorrow in the DC Digital Comics Store. It’s an exciting new twist in the life of the Man of Steel that only adds to what’s already been a banner year for our favorite Kryptonian. As Krul puts it, “Superman's in for one hell of a ride, and you won't believe what he encounters along the way.”
