This Just Happened: Superman Watches The Destruction of Krypton

SPOILER ALERT: If you have not read ACTION COMICS #14 yet and do not wish to know what happens, stop reading this post now (major spoiler alerts ahead!).

A few weeks back, we teased that ACTION COMICS #14 would feature a game-changing back-up story. Well if you picked up the issue when it hit stores this past Wednesday, you now know exactly what we were talking about!

From the creative team of writer Sholly Fisch and artists Chris Sprouse and Karl Story, “Star Light, Star Bright…” changes the history of Superman forever. Fans finally found out why Superman was making regular trips to a particular planetarium located in New York City: to locate his home planet of Krypton. And helping him? Real-life world-renowned astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse Tyson.

In “Star Light, Star Bright…” Superman visits the American Museum of Natural History’s Hayden Planetarium to see Dr. Tyson. In a room full of his colleagues, Tyson focuses telescopes from all over the world on the Corvus constellation. One particular star in this constellation, LHS 2520, holds special meaning for Superman. This star is Krypton’s red sun, Rao.

The data from all of the telescopes are integrated and assembled by Superman to create images of Rao and Krypton. The images of Krypton’s tragic death have just reached the Earth, twenty-seven years after the event. Surrounded by astrophysicists, Superman witnesses the destruction of his home planet. In other words, Krypton was located on its final day of existence.

"This is a major milestone in the Superman mythos that gives our Super Hero a place in the universe,” DC Entertainment Co-Publisher Dan DiDio said in a press release earlier this week. "Having Neil deGrasse Tyson in the book was one thing, but by applying real world science to this story he has forever changed Superman’s place in history. Now fans will be able to look up at the night’s sky and say – ‘that’s where Superman was born’."

Below, take a look at a page from “Star Light, Star Bright …” as Krypton is located and the Man of Steel witnesses its destruction. And don’t forget to pick up your copy of ACTION COMICS #14, in stores now!

DC COMICS AND NEIL DEGRASSE TYSON PUT KRYPTON ON THE MAP WITH HISTORIC SUPERMAN STORY

World Renowned Astrophysicist Makes Guest Appearance In ACTION COMICS #14 And Helps Pinpoint Icon’s Home Planet In Our Known Universe

BURBANK, Calif. (November 5, 2012) – Fact and fiction merge in the newest issue of DC Comics’ ACTION COMICS #14, bringing real world implications to the iconic Superman story. In the explosive back-up story for ACTION COMICS #14 titled “Star Light, Star Bright”, world-renowned astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson helps Superman find his home planet of Krypton on its final day of existence. Today, Dr. Tyson announces an actual location for a Krypton-like system in our known universe. ACTION COMICS #14 hits stores on November 7.

"This is a major milestone in the Superman mythos that gives our Super Hero a place in the universe,” said DC Entertainment co-publisher, Dan DiDio. "Having Neil deGrasse Tyson in the book was one thing, but by applying real world science to this story he has forever changed Superman’s place in history. Now fans will be able to look up at the night’s sky and say – ‘that’s where Superman was born’."

The red dwarf star designated for having the ability to support a Krypton-like planet is located in the constellation Corvus 27.1 light years from Earth. The star, designated LHS 2520, possesses a red, highly turbulent surface, somewhat cooler and smaller than the Sun. To find it in the night’s sky, amateur astronomers and Superman fans can follow these coordinates:

J2000

Right Ascension: 12 hours 10 minutes 5.77 seconds

Declination:  -15 degrees 4 minutes 17.9 seconds

Proper Motion: 0.76 arcseconds per year, along 172.94 degrees from due north

Dr. Tyson has a well-documented history applying science to entertainment in order to make the subject accessible and exciting to the public. He is the Director of Hayden Planetarium at the AmericanMuseum of Natural History, which since its founding in 1935 has served as the premier conduit between the frontier of cosmic discovery and the public's appreciation of it.  Tyson also recently made headlines by getting film director, James Cameron, to alter the night’s sky as seen in The Titanic due to inaccuracies. The adjustment was made and can be seen in the re-release of Titanic 3-D.

Tyson noted, “As a native of Metropolis, I was delighted to help Superman, who has done so much for my city over all these years.  And it’s clear that if he weren’t a superhero he would have made quite an astrophysicist.”

“Star Light, Star Bright” is written by Sholly Fisch, a veteran in the educational media field and longtime comic book writer. Fisch and DC Comics editor Wil Moss collaborated with Dr. Tyson on the creation of this epic tale and its real world applications. The story is supported by the stellar art team of Chris Sprouse and Karl Story. “Star Light, Star Bright” appears at the end of ACTION COMICS #14, which features a lead story  penned by comic book industry superstar Grant Morrison with art by Rags Morales and Mark Propst.

5.2 Reasons it's a Great Time to be a Superman Fan

You ever hear of this Superman guy? Faster than a speeding bullet? Powerful enough to launch a locomotive into space by dropkicking it in its face? Able to leap tall buildings by just flying right over them—basically, pointing at gravity and laughing? Ha! Gravity.

Yeah, just about everyone’s heard of Superman, and if you haven’t then let us be the first to welcome you to Earth! It's a fun place—scary at times—filled with wondrous and magical things, like bite-sized pizza snacks and comic books and cartoons and a whole Internet full of dancing kittens. Trust us, you’re going to love those…even if you aren’t exactly sure why.

But in all seriousness, if you are a Superman fan or if you've been looking for a good time to metaphorically take a peek inside the Fortress of Awesomitude, now's the time. Mark your calendars, tack a note onto your Pinterest board (not literally, though, cause then you'd have a hole in your screen), and do a little dance in a bright red cape because there’s never been a better time to be a Superman fan. In fact, let’s count off the 5.2 Reasons it's a Great Time to be a Superman Fan!

1. Superman: Earth One

Yesterday saw the release of SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE Vol. 2, the second Superman installment in the graphic novel line that reinterprets and reintroduces classic characters for new readers. In the book's first volume, writer J. Michael Straczynski introduced a Man of Steel trying to find his place in the world and ultimately discovering one he never quite expected. It boiled down the essence of both Superman and Clark Kent and mixed it into a modern day context, exploring the emotional and personal struggle that comes with being an outsider. With Vol. 2, things get CRAZY—and we mean in that in the greatest way possible. A well-known Superman villain makes his debut, the Man of Steel makes a moral choice that had our jaws on the floor and there's a part with a childhood pet that brought a tear to our eye (it’s always the pets!). That’s to say nothing about the twist at the end involving a certain infamous villain that left us salivating for more…

2. Huge, Game-Changing Stories

We're talking so big they could collapse under their own weight and cause an explosion so huge it'll rip the very fabric of space and time and bend it to its will. Exaggeration? Maybe. But for a long time, these were two truths about Superman: he worked at the Daily Planet and he loved Lois Lane. Well friends, these times are a changing. Most recently in SUPERMAN #13, Clark Kent left the Daily Planet, and as of JUSTICE LEAGUE #12, Superman's now dating Wonder Woman. Say what you will about Lois Lane and whether or not she's the only one for the Man of Steel, the storytelling potential alone in this coupling is over 9,000. Which is what makes both these things so exciting—the stories set to be told look amazing!

3. H'El on Earth

Of course, Superman won't be flying solo in the days ahead. Since the launch of DC COMICS—THE NEW 52, the Superman family of titles have remained more or less separate, with both Superboy and Supergirl following their own individual storylines. But with the "H'El on Earth" crossover, the sons and daughters and half-clones of Krypton finally get together for some good old-fashioned fun—and by fun we mean dealing with a dangerous new Kryptonian threat and some very conflicting viewpoints on how to handle the situation. We're positive the latter will be handled with hugs. Lots of face-punching, heat-vision-enforced hugs.

4. Supergirl Kicks "S"

If you haven't been reading Supergirl, you need to go here now and start. Seriously. We've been fans of writer Mike Johnson ever since his Lil' League arc on Superman/Batman (with art by American Vampire's Rafael Albuquerque) and unsurprisingly, he has been doing an amazing job on the Girl of Steel's self-titled series, penning a young Kara Zor-El that feels like a real teenaged girl lost in a world she barely understands—like "Alice in Wonderland," if Alice had superpowers and beat up the Queen of Hearts for being a crazy person and threatening the lives of pretty much everyone. It's a phenomenally well-written series only further enhanced by the incredibly beautiful art by Mahmud Asrar.

In fact, when it comes to all the Superman family of titles...

5. Amazing Artists All Around

We mentioned Mahmud Asrar, but we also have RB Silva on Superboy, Shane Davis on Superman: Earth One, Tony S. Daniel coming to Action Comics and now Kenneth Rocafort on the core Superman title. It's art so gorgeous you'll want to stab your eyes out because you'll never see something so breathtaking again (though please, for Rao's sake, DO NOT stab your eyes out).

And the Super-fan fun doesn't stop here. It continues well into next year, with two projects that look to take us up, up and away into the stratosphere of excellence:

5.1 The Man of Steel

5.2 Scott Snyder. Jim Lee.

If that Jim Lee image has you dying to find out more, be sure to check out the video we shot with this creative dream team at New York Comic-Con. Now, we're going to head out because we're pretty sure traffic on our drive home won't be moving faster than a speeding bullet. But feel free to sound off about which of the super titles you're enjoying the most in comments below, and let us know which upcoming one you're most looking forward to.

5.2 Reasons Superman is a Threat

All this month on DCComics.com we're letting the more menacing and malevolent members of the DC Universe take over the site—from a villain-centric sweepstakes, to new character pages for some of the biggest and baddest, to a soon-to-be-unveiled sinister new skin, a villainous personality quiz and more.

Why? Well, it may be because it’s October and with Halloween on the horizon, it seemed like a good time to be a little bad. That could very well be the reason… and not because these guys are scary and menacing and may have taken our prized Dr. Fate Minimate (with removable helmet!) hostage to ensure our cooperation. Nope. Not that second part at all...

Anyhow, in the spirit of letting our super-villains have their say, we decided to visit one of our more popular and financially successful villains, Lex Luthor, to have a chat. And let us just say that we don't get why so many people don't trust this guy. He was super cordial and was even nice enough to make us this great tasting drink called a "Brain Softener" or something like that. We can't really remember for some reason...

But while talking, we realized what Lex says makes absolute sense. Superman is a menace! And since this revelation just happened to occur a day before our weekly column was due on the site (and since we can’t seem to remember what we were going to write about), we're instead going to give you 5.2 Reasons Superman is a Threat!

1. He's Incredibly Powerful

We pretty much almost all know the spiel at this point: speeding bullets, locomotives, tall buildings and all that. But there's more. Heat vision, freeze breath, nearly indestructible. And don't get us started on the whole x-ray vision thing. How many people must be suffering from some sort of radiation poisoning or something from him shooting x-rays around willy-nilly. But what if he loses it one day or decides he wants to take over? What's going to stop him? At any time he could go completely crazy-go-nuts. And if you think that he would never do that, well, he has before (like in this story and this one) and might again because...

2. Red Kryptonite

Green Kryptonite could very well kill the Man of Steel, sapping his powers and slowly poisoning him from the inside out. It's a handy thing to keep around—or so Lex assured us when showing off his Kryptonite collection. However, there are actually other forms of Kryptonite, including blue, black and red—the latter of which can cause strange and unpredictable results upon exposure. So, sure Superman may seem benevolent, but one accidental mosey by some Red-K and BAM! Giant Super-Monkey! He even once got turned into a dragon. A DRAGON!

3. He Hides Amongst Us

When Superman is not off saving cats from trees or punching bad guys into space, where does he go? We'll tell you where. He's masquerading as one of us. Sure Superman may look human, but never forget that he isn't. He's an alien with, as we mentioned, an insane amount of power. He could be standing right next to you and you wouldn't even know it. And what if he accidentally stepped on your foot? He'd shatter every bone in there. You think he'd stick around after that and blow his secret identity? Good luck getting that covered by your insurance. "How'd you break your leg?" "Superman stepped on me." Yeah, that'll work.

4. A FORTRESS of Solitude

It's not called "Superman's Place to Chillax" or "The Man of Steel's Man Cave." It's called the Fortress of Solitude. Why a Fortress? What is he hiding in there he doesn't want the rest of the world to see? He's hiding amongst us, pretending to be us, all while having a super secret Kryptonian fortress with untold weapons and dangers inside. For a hero who swears he's so open and trustworthy, he seems to keep a lot of secrets.

5. He Holds Back Humanity

Consistency breeds complacency. If we fall from a high-rise, don't worry, he'll catch us. If a machine goes on the fritz, he'll take care of it. If an inter-dimensional dictator shows up, we run and hide rather than fight back. How can we move forward when someone else continuously stands in our way? And how much is he really helping? He has access to technology decades ahead of anything we've seen and yet he keeps it all locked away. Think of how many advances in science and health could be made. Instead, he continues to catch us when we fall. Let's face it: he wants us to look up in the sky when he flies by. He enjoys being above us.

5.1 Massive Amounts of Property Damage

5.2 He Isn't Alone

Totally a menace! We never thought so before either, but suddenly it just kind of makes sense after our meeting. You know, we don't even remember leaving or how we got back. Weird. And now we feel awfully tired. Wonder if it was something we dran—

ACTION COMICS #14 To Feature A Game-Changing Back-Up Story

Next month, Superman fans will witness an explosive and defining revelation in “Star Light, Star Bright…,” the back-up story in ACTION COMICS #14.

Regular ACTION COMICS back-up writer Sholly Fisch welcomes aboard the stellar art team of Chris Sprouse and Karl Story for a tale that finds the Man of Steel making a mysterious trip to an observatory. But why is he there? Why would someone so well versed in other planets need the help of an observatory? We asked the back-up story’s editor Wil Moss to give us a clue as to what Superman is up to. Take it away, Wil!

“The back-up in ACTION COMICS #14 is a really terrific little story, but we can’t tell you much about it yet,” Moss teased. “All we can say is that it’s IMPORTANT! Historic, even! Superman has been making these regular trips to an observatory. But why? What is he searching for? Find out this November … and wait’ll you see who’s helping him!”

Place your bets in the comments section below about what you think Superman is looking for, and don’t forget to pick up ACTION COMICS #14 when it flies into stores on November 7th.

Preview of SUPERMAN #13

If you’ve already picked up one of today’s DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 releases, you may have noticed a special treat in the back of your book(s): a preview of next week’s SUPERMAN #13. But if you haven’t made your way to the comic book store yet, don’t worry! You can check out the preview right here on THE SOURCE.

In SUPERMAN #13, the Man of Steel finds himself testing his strength on machines under
the direction of Dr. Veritas, a beautiful woman who designed the instruments gauging Superman’s abilities. These machines are so powerful, in fact, that Superman feels exhausted and actually begins to perspire for the first time since he can remember. But does the fact that him and Dr. Vertias have known each other for a while mean that they can trust one another? After all, why is she collecting all this data on Superman in the first place?

SUPERMAN #13, in stores on October 24, comes to you from writer Scott Lobdell and artist Kenneth Rocafort. Check out the preview in the back of all of today’s DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 releases or simply click right here.

Jim Lee and Scott Snyder team up for 2013 Superman project

2013 is going to be an epic year for Superman – and we know two reasons why:

Scott Snyder and Jim Lee.

The superstar creative team will join forces for the first time to launch a new Superman title that promises to elevate the already high-flying hero to new heights and force him to face off against foes familiar and new, as only two of the top industry talents can.

Snyder, who’s bringing back the Joker in the pages of Batman’s “Death of the Family” crossover and DC Entertainment Co-Publisher Lee, who just completed a historic artistic run on JUSTICE LEAGUE with writer and DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns, are teaming up at the top of their games and promise to craft a tale that’ll engage Superman fans new and old, and add new, compelling chapters to the Superman – and Clark Kent – mythos. This is as can’t miss as these things get, people. But let’s hear it from the creators themselves.

Jim?

“As a huge fan of Scott's writing, I'm looking forward to drawing Superman as much as I am reading Scott’s story as it unfolds,” Lee said. “Scott's crafted a truly epic yet personal story which will demonstrate without a doubt why Superman remains the most iconic hero of the modern age. 2013 is gonna absolutely rock!”

Indeed it will! But the teasing isn’t over. Let’s pass the mic to Mr. Snyder, shall we?

"I've loved Superman since I was a kid, and to be working on him now, with the great Jim Lee, is simply too thrilling for words. It's a dream come true for me on every front,” Snyder said. “I don't want to give too much away, so I'll just say it's the Superman story I'd write if I only ever got one chance to write the character. It's an exploration of everything I love and am fascinated by about him. Like Court of Owls for Batman, it's a character piece for Clark - it's going to challenge him to his core. And it's definitely epic in scope, with huge action and drama - the biggest and most earth shaking action I've ever done. Can't wait to see what you all think of it. Couldn't be more grateful or excited to get the chance to make this one!"
