5.2 Questions with Matt Senreich

When we heard that the hilariously irreverent pop-culture-referencing, toy crazy Cartoon Network television series "Robot Chicken" was doing a DC Comics Special, there really was only one reaction to be had: "Buck yes!"

Known for its anthological sketches featuring various toys lampooning everything nerdy from TV shows and anime to video games and comic books, the Emmy Award-winning "Robot Chicken" was co-created by former Wizard Entertainment editorial director Matt Senreich and actor/nerd celebrity icon Seth Green (seriously, Google this man and tell us he doesn't live the most enviable nerd-tastic life ever).

The DC Comics Special—which focuses specifically on sketches featuring the heroes and villains of the DC Universe voiced by award-winning actors like Neil Patrick Harris and Alfred Molina—premieres on Sunday, September 9.

We had a quick chat with co-creator Senreich about the upcoming special in a bout of 5.2 Questions!

1. What about the DC Comics staple of heroes and the old Super Friends cartoon specifically inspired you guys to want to make this special?

I grew up a comic geek and worked in comics starting when I was 16 years old. Getting to play with Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, etc. was a dream to twist them on their side the way we do. So when Geoff Johns came to us with this idea, it was a no-brainer!

2. The cast for the special looks incredible—with NPH as Two-Face, Megan Fox as Lois Lane, Alfred Molina as Lex Luthor, Nerd God Nathan Fillion as GL, and more. Did you know beforehand that “These are the guys we want for these specific roles?” How did the casting all come about?

For some, we just knew who we wanted like Nathan as Green Lantern. Neil played Two-Face for us in a sketch during the regular season of Robot Chicken, so we knew we wanted to lure him back! Same with Megan Fox as Lois Lane. We had her play Lois Lane in a one-off sketch during a previous RC season. We love Breckin's Superman and Alex Bornstein's Wonder Woman. Alfred Molina was just a reach for the sky scenario and he said yes. We just thought his voice was exactly what we had written for that character!

3. Matt, can you give any hints to some of the voices you’ll be contributing? Snapper Carr, maybe?

I'm limited in my range with voice over, but I will say that I play a convincing Chillblaine. Oh, and a JSA member who has one line. I like to keep who I play on the down-low as it's usually not the best voice in the episode.

4. Can you tease some of your favorite sketches coming up in the special?

All the Lex Luthor stuff makes me really happy. Anything with the DC villains hanging out in the headquarters came together really well. It's hard to pick favorites, but Paul Reubens as the Riddler taunting Sinestro to cut his mustache may be my favorite if I had to choose today.

5. When you guys did the Star Wars Special, you had some sketches that didn’t make it into the first, but then were included in the second. Were there sketches that didn’t make it into the DC Comics Special that you’re saving for the possibility of a second?

Yes. Fingers crossed.

5.1 Have you ever dressed as a DC Comics character—be it for Halloween or a convention?

We are having a RCDC costume party for the premiere. So yes. Pictures may show up on Twitter eventually.

5.2 If you could have the power of any DC super hero, whose would you want?

Superman. Duh.

Superman Named the World's Most Kissable Super Hero According to Match.com Survey

DC Comics’ JUSTICE LEAGUE #12 Unveils World’s Newest Power Couple – Superman and Wonder Woman – Sparking Fun Survey Results And Compatibility Analysis

BURBANK, Calif. (August 27, 2012) – Wonder Woman is one lucky lady. Match.com, the world’s largest dating website, today reveals that according to its users Superman is the most kissable Super Hero in the world.

This revelation comes just as the summer’s biggest love affair between Superman and Wonder Woman heats up in the latest issue of DC Comics JUSTICE LEAGUE #12. This news is part of a wealth of material mined from a partnership between Match.com and DC Entertainment that includes results from a survey of more than 1,000 single male and female users of Match.com and a compatibility analysis, which weighs the characters’ chances for a long-term love affair. Superman and Wonder Woman’s first kiss and budding relationship is revealed in JUSTICE LEAGUE #12, available in stores on August 29.

The start of their relationship, like any other, is sealed with a kiss – a kiss that Match.com’s survey showed most single ladies would leap for with 76.2% choosing Superman as the most kissable Super Hero in the universe. As for the top place singles would want to experience a Super Hero kiss? It’s no contest: flying in the air was the clear winner (Males 42.4%, Females 42.9%), while teleporting through time zones ranked last (Males 3.4%, Females 6.3 %).

According to Match.com’s Chief Scientific Advisor and renowned biological anthropologist, Dr. Helen Fisher, the importance of the kiss between Superman and Wonder Woman is as meaningful as it is powerful, “A Super Hero kiss is exciting, but it can be thrilling for people without super powers too. A great first kiss can be exhilarating due to the way the brain responds through the dopamine system, so Superman and Wonder Woman’s first kiss could very well push them over the threshold toward falling in love.”

To find out if Superman and Wonder Woman are more Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson than Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries, Dr. Fisher measured their compatibility.  After reviewing the data and history of each character she surmised, “As a couple, they are a classic match of a high-testosterone male and the high-estrogen female, and they have many cultural and biological traits that will fuel their romance.”

Geoff Johns, DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer and writer on JUSTICE LEAGUE #12 added, “This is going to be an interesting ride for these two heroes. It raises all kinds of questions? Does this relationship go public? Is it secret? How would Lois Lane or Steve Trevor react? The Justice League? The villains? The world? And...Batman? They’re certainly compatible, but the environment they live in is about as stressful as it can get. We’ll see what wins out."

SUPERMAN ANNUAL #1 Spotlight

This month, DC Comics will release its next batch of Annuals. These special oversized issues will not only build off of the events in their respective series, but will also greatly impact the expanding DC Universe. Every day this week on THE SOURCE, we’ll be putting individual spotlights on each of these Annual issues by talking to various writers, artists, and editors to give you special sneak peeks at what’s to come! Next up is SUPERMAN ANNUAL #1.

"We've heard a lot about Helspont and his intergalactic conquests – I thought it was time to see him in action! Unfortunately for Superman, the Last Son of the House of Daemon has a bite that is much worse than his bite!” teased writer Scott Lobdell.

“There is an old life rule that says you shouldn't move in with your best friend.  You would think a guy as smart as Clark would know that hosting Jimmy would strain even his super human levels of endurance.”

“I love that the Annual touches base with other aliens living on Earth. We get to see Starfire, Martian Manhunter, Hawkman -- and the cameos don't stop there! I think it was only fitting that we should touch base with these characters considering how much Superman's actions in the coming months are going to effect the perception of all aliens currently visiting our planet. This is one of those Annuals that is a total game-changer!”

“I wasn't familiar with Pascal Alixe's work before we started the Annual, but I am sure the industry will be standing up to take notice once this book is out. He was tasked with creating the Daemonite homeworld, and he knocked it out of the park and right out of the galaxy!”

“In the Man of Steel’s first Annual we deal with an alien threat that has targeted the Last Son of Krypton, and we get the truth’s behind invaders that have been here for some time and are about to be eradicated by their own kind,” added series editor Eddie Berganza. “There’s also close encounter cameos by Starfire, Hawkman and Martian Manhunter. Why should they be loyal to their adopted planet is the question raised.”

“There’s some epic art by lead artist Pascal Alixe on this and Scott Lobdell with Fabian Nicieza have crafted a story that reminds us we are not alone on Earth – but we may be soon if the alien extinction continues!”

From the creative team of Scott Lobdell, Pascal Alixe and Fabian Nicieza, SUPERMAN ANNUAL #1 arrives in stores on August 29.

DIGITAL FIRST SPOTLIGHT: Smallville Season 11

Did you know that you no longer have to wait till Wednesday to read a brand new DC comic? From the early adventures of a still-developing Superman to epic-scale action set far in our future to vastly imaginative Batman tales spun by some of the best creators in comics, you can find the action you crave starring the characters you love Monday through Friday, and you don’t even need to leave your living room to do it. (Also, be sure to read to the end of the article to find out how you can win a free download of each day’s title!)

We wrap up our week of Digital First spotlights with a look at SMALLVILLE SEASON 11, a near-weekly title that takes off right where the popular CW show left off and focuses on Clark Kent’s early experiences as Superman. Even better, Clark’s adventures are penned by none other than Bryan Q. Miller, the former writer and executive story editor of the TV series. Smallville Season 11 recently wrapped up its first “episode,” and today launches into an exciting new one that will (for the first time in the show’s history) bring Superman face-to-face with a certain legendary Caped Crusader.

Here’s what Bryan had to say about the series and why it’s a must-read for fans of the show and fans of Superman:

“Smallville Season 11 – your one-stop shop for not only a weekly continuation of the long-running television series, but all the classic Superman goodness you can ask for, with a few twists thrown in for good measure. Clark Kent and Lois Lane, perpetually engaged? Check. Oliver Queen, openly operating as the Green Arrow, married to none other than Smallville’s own Chloe Sullivan? Check. Lex Luthor, resurrected from the dead with none of his memories, but with a major grudge against Superman? Double check. Oh yeah… and through some whack-a-doo fake science cooked up by yours truly, the consciousness of Lex’s half-sister is rolling around in that beautiful bald head of his. You know… like you do.

When we wrapped our 12-week premiere, ‘Guardian,’ our ensemble was adrift in a sea of drama.  Luthor managed to lace Superman with a radioactive isotope – his satellites can follow the boy in blue everywhere he goes. Which means Clark can’t go home to Lois, or back to the farm, without leading Lex straight back to his secret. Chloe and Oliver tracked a downed spacecraft only to learn that it wasn’t from space at all… It contained Chloe’s doppleganger from an alternate Earth. With her dying breath, Alternate Chloe relayed that Earth 2 had been destroyed, victim to something called ‘The Crisis.’

‘Detective’ picks up three weeks after our last chapter’s bittersweet conclusion. As Lois and Clark struggle to deal with their Luthor-imposed change in status quo, a storm is brewing in a rainy, industrial pit of a city – Gotham. That’s right. After ten years of waiting, Smallville finally gets a visit from Batman. The Batman. Not Bruce Wayne (and lots of talk about bats as we revel in not-so-subtle allusion). No… we get Batman, almost a decade into waging his war on crime. He’s got toys. He’s got skills. He’s got anger. And he’s got a partner – our female Nightwing, Barbara Gordon. Superman, Batman, Green Arrow, Nightwing, Lex Luthor, Lois Lane and a heap of villains. All for 99 cents a week!”
