SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE, VOL. 2 Debuts at #1 on THE NEW YORK TIMES’ Hardcover Graphic Books Best Seller List

On Friday, THE NEW YORK TIMES published their Graphic Books Best Sellers Lists and debuting at #1 on the Hardcover list was SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE, VOL. 2.

The highly anticipated sequel to the #1 New York Times best-selling graphic novel SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE, this new original graphic novel reunites acclaimed writer J. Michael Straczynski (BEFORE WATCHMEN, BRAVE AND THE BOLD, BABYLON 5) and superstar artist Shane Davis (GREEN LANTERN, SUPERMAN/BATMAN).

In SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE, VOL. 2, a young Clark Kent, while slightly more settled in Metropolis from when we last left him, is still struggling to find his footing both as a reporter and as his superhero alter-ego, Superman. When a powerful new villain threatens Metropolis and drains him of all his powers, Superman will learn for the first time what it means to be vulnerable -- in other words, what it means to be truly human.

And click here to see THE NEW YORK TIMES’ list of Paperback Graphic Books Best Sellers, including Vertigo’s SWEET TOOTH, VOL. 5, by Jeff Lemire. Congratulations to all!

AQUAMAN, BATGIRL and SWEET TOOTH spotlighted in THE NEW YORK TIMES’ 2012 Graphic Novel Holiday Gift Guide

Last week, we told you about the various DCE titles making the best-of-the-year lists over at AMAZON.COM and BARNES AND NOBLE.

Today, we’re pleased to announce that THE NEW YORK TIMES has published their 2012 Holiday Gift Guide, and making the Graphic Novels list was AQUAMAN, VOL. 1: THE TRENCH and BATGIRL, VOL. 1: THE DARKEST REFLECTION.

“Two of the best series to emerge from DC Comics’ decision to reintroduce its heroes feature characters that embrace what came before and move forward,” wrote THE NEW YORK TIMES. “In AQUAMAN: THE TRENCH, the writer Geoff Johns is providing the building blocks to make the undersea hero an A-lister, and the artwork by Ivan Reis is magnificent. Over in BATGIRL: THE DARKEST REFLECTION, Gail Simone has returned Barbara Gordon to the cowl, after a miraculous end to her paralysis at the hands of the Joker — though the post-traumatic stress lingers.”

Also mentioned on the list was Jeff Lemire’s SWEET TOOTH, which THE NEW YORK TIMES described as “engrossing.” Click here to check out the full list and congratulations to all!

5.2 Reasons Jeff Lemire Rocks

There's a lot of things we love, like comic books and toys and ice cream and cookies and naptime. We share a lot of similar interests with children, apparently. But we also love our creators. No, we’re not referring to our literal creators. We’re not talking about the people who built us. Which isn’t to suggest that we're super intelligent robots slowly bidding our time before the inevitable robot uprising or anything like that...

*ahem*

No, we're talking about the writers and artists that help make our comics and characters great with their incredible talent, hard work and dedication, and all-around general awesomeness—which is what makes us super excited about Jeff Lemire taking over the writing reins on Green Arrow starting with issue #17.  We've been fans of Jeff for quite some time—and not only because he's a super nice dude that often has hilarious twitter conversations with fellow writers like Scott Snyder (follow them both at @JeffLemire and @SSnyder1835). Certainly those are two reasons, but they’re not the only ones. In fact, we're going to give you a full 5.2 Reasons Jeff Lemire Rocks!

1. Green Arrow

Sure, his run on the title hasn't started yet, but from his early comments alone, we're already confident he's going to knock this one out of the park (expected a bulls-eye joke there, didn'cha?). Lemire said that while he was never that into the character previously, he's gone back and read a lot about the character since then and cited Mike Grell's character-defining LONGBOW HUNTERS and Andy Diggle and Jock's GREEN ARROW: YEAR ONE as major influences for his approach. That alone is enough for him to get our ringing endorsement. Add in the phenomenal art of I, Vampire's Andrea Sorrentino and that is a guaranteed bulls-eye.

2. Animal Man

Easily the breakout series of DC COMICS—THE NEW 52, Jeff Lemire's Animal Man took readers down a dark and terrifying path, infusing the title with an indie comic feel and a generous dose of horror while still retaining its superhero sensibilities. It's fascinating to see the family dynamic unfold and the relationship play out between Buddy and Ellen—all while in the middle of battling monstrous creatures, dealing with their daughter bringing dead pets back to life, and holding conversations with a talking cat named Socks that is actually an avatar to a group of ancient beings that represent all animal life on Earth.

3. Justice League Dark

Pardon the pun, but Justice League Dark is downright magical. Lemire recently came onboard the series with issue #9, and already he's begun a tale filled with mysticism, mayhem and memorable characters (including Frankenstein, who Lemire worked on previously) that has kept readers as enthralled as an audience member at one of Zatanna's magic shows. But JLD isn't a one-man show. Artist Mikel Janin is the Teller to Lemire's Penn, and together they put on one heck of a magic trick. Sorry, we mean illusion.

4. Sweet Tooth

Lemire's Vertigo series SWEET TOOTH is sadly nearing its end, with only one issue left to go. But that gives you plenty of time to catch up on this fantastic series both written and drawn by Lemire. It's a wonderful tale of friendship, innocence, survival and animal-people. It's like Richard Corben's "A Boy and His Dog," but with a violent drifter and a 9-year-old boy with antlers. So, you know, completely awesome.

5. Legends of the Dark Knight

The digital first Legends of the Dark Knight series consists of weekly installments of Batman-centric tales written by various creative teams. Things kicked off with a bang by teaming Lemire's artistic skills with the writing power of Damon Lindelof (TV’s Lost, "Star Trek Into Darkness") in a one-shot tale. As such, we don't want to give anything way except to say that it's totally worth checking out just to see Lemire's Dark Knight alone.

Preview Monday: GREEN ARROW #14 and SWEET TOOTH #39

For this week’s installment of Preview Monday, we’re giving you exclusive first looks at GREEN ARROW #14 and SWEET TOOTH #39.

It’s the second part of “Sky War” as “Hawkman: Wanted” continues in this week’s issue of GREEN ARROW! En route back home from China, Oliver Queen comes across a flock of alien birdmen. In true hero form, he takes matters into his own hands rather that simply sitting aside and watching as the Thangarian police hunting Hawkman continue to infiltrate the Seattle skies. And when things get personal for Ollie and the Warhawks kidnap Emma, he’ll need to turn to Hawkman for help. But will Hawkman’s trackers on the Warhawks make the duo’s mission successful, or will they just be led into a trap? GREEN ARROW #14, in stores on Wednesday, is written by Ann Nocenti and illustrated by Freddie Williams II and Rob Hunter. Click here for an exclusive preview of the issue.

In the penultimate issue of SWEET TOOTH, Gus and Jepperd’s long-winded journey finally comes to its harrowing conclusion. But when Abbot makes Gus his hostage to get Jepperd in their final face-off, who will live and who will die? And what does this threat mean for the future of the hybrid species? Written and illustrated by Jeff Lemire, SWEET TOOTH #39 paves the path for next month’s climactic series finale. Click here for an exclusive preview of the issue, which arrives in stores this week.

Announcing TRILLIUM, a new Vertigo series from writer/artist Jeff Lemire

Arriving in 2013, Vertigo will publish TRILLIUM, a limited series written and illustrated by the incomparable Jeff Lemire (Sweet Tooth, Animal Man, Justice League Dark, Essex County Trilogy, Ghosts).

We asked Lemire to share some thoughts about the new series and here’s what he said: “As Sweet Tooth moved towards its conclusion earlier this year, I started to look ahead to what my next creator-owned project for DC/Vertigo could be. I pitched a number of ideas to editor Mark Doyle that I wasn't totally happy with.  Finally he pushed me to leave my comfort zone, and get away from the genres and themes that I'd become known for.

Sci-Fi is something I've wanted to tackle for a while. I experimented a bit with it last year when I did the ULTRA THE MULTI-ALIEN short story for Vertigo's STRANGE ADVENTURES anthology and enjoyed that project so much that I was eager to do more. I've also always wanted to do a really powerful, human love story. There have been so few love stories done really well in comics. Preacher and Blankets come to mind as recent successes, but in my mind, it’s still a difficult and rather unexplored genre in the comics medium. It seemed like just the kind of challenge Mark was pushing me to undertake. So, I combined these two interests along with my ongoing fascination with in World War 1, and turn of the century exploration, and the results are TRILLIUM.”

It’s the year 3797 and botanist Nika Temsmith is researching a species of strange plant-based life forms on a remote science station near the outermost rim of colonized space.

It’s the year 1921, and war-scarred explorer William Pike leads an expedition into the dense jungles of
Peru in search of the fabled “Lost Temple of The Incas,” an elusive sanctuary said to have strange healing properties.

Two disparate souls separated by thousands of years and hundreds of millions of miles. Yet they will fall in love and, as a result, bring about the end of the universe. Even though reality is unraveling all around them, nothing can pull them apart. This isn’t just a love story, it’s the last love story ever told.

Lemire continued, “It will be my most ambitious creator-owned project and my most challenging. I think fans of my previous work will see traces of both SWEET TOOTH and THE UNDERWATER WELDER in its chemistry, but I really do want to push myself in new directions as well.

TRILLIUM is a mind-bending sci-fi thriller about the end of the universe. And, it's a story about the dawn of human exploration and its natural conclusion thousands of years away. But most of all it’s a love story. And I can't wait to share it with you.”
