Take a look at BLACKEST NIGHT: TITANS #2

J.T. Krul and artist Ed Benes continue to turn up the BLACKEST NIGHT volume on the TITANS, and we've got a few pages for you to look over. We'll have a more formal (i.e. lettered and colored!) preview, but why make you wait until then? Especially when we have some pretty intense Titan-on-Titan violence? Black Lantern Hawk! Red Star! Pantha! Wildabeest! Plus, a very creepy family reunion. OK, I'll clam up. Check out the pages below for yourself.

BLACKEST NIGHT: TITANS #2 hits 9/30.

Get a first look inside BLACKEST NIGHT: TITANS #1

The BLACKEST NIGHT is upon us, and the dead are rising across the DCU. No one is unaffected, and some teams -- like the TITANS -- have seen more than their share of fatalities over the years. Later this month, writer J.T. Krul and artist Ed Benes will bring you the first issue of BLACKEST NIGHT: TITANS, which spotlights how the heroes deal with the sudden return of some of their most tragic members. But, to tide you over until then, we've got a look at some interiors from Benes. And, because we asked him nicely, BLACKEST NIGHT: TITANS editor Brian Cunningham was kind of enough to give us the skinny on the mini-series. Take it away, Brian:

“Working on these characters is something Ed Benes has wanted for a very long time, so we are more than happy to oblige him! And he has a wonderful script to draw from. J.T. Krul worked closely with Geoff Johns to stay true to the spirit of the ‘Blackest Night’ event, and what they came up with is a horror movie on paper. I really feel both ‘Blackest Night’ fans and Titans fans will be VERY happy with this mini-series.”

BLACKEST NIGHT: TITANS #1 hits 8/26.

Miller (Smallville), who’ll be kicking off the new BATGIRL series in no time, continues his jaunt through the Teen Titans world, as the team tries to rescue Wonder Girl from the new Fearsome Five, as the Calculator enacts his revenge on the team for not protecting his daughter. Plus, writer Sean McKeever and artist Yildiray Cinar continue to chronicle the solo adventures of everyone’s favorite one-eyed teen, Ravager, in the issue’s second feature. What more do you need? A look at WEDNESDAY COMICS' TEEN TITANS strip

Well, it's not actually Wednesday, but that's never stopped us from posting cool images from WEDNESDAY COMICS, has it? The new weekly series, slated to launch in July, is the brainchild of DC Art Director Mark Chiarello, who has collected an impressive array of creators for the book.

This time around, we have a look at writer Eddie Berganza and artist Sean Galloway's TEEN TITANS strip, which, as you can see, is really a delight. Enjoy.

Just a quick housekeeping reminder, and a few TEEN TITANS #71 pages

We'll be closing up shop a little early this afternoon. Every now and again we get this thing called a "Summer Friday." Just means we can jet a bit early and enjoy the weekend. I'm all for it.

Additionally, the DC offices will be closed on Monday, celebrating Memorial Day. Alas, this means no blogging will be happening. Try not to cry.

But, in our continued efforts to keep you entertained, here are a few pages from TEEN TITANS #71. In the aftermath of the "Deathtrap" crossover, the team picks up the pieces as Ravager returns -- but is she friend or foe?

TEEN TITANS #71 hits 5/27. Have a great weekend!

Take a look inside the RAVAGER co-feature

One of the best parts of working on The Source is getting a chance to see stuff in progress, or getting bits of info about the creative process. With that in mind, we talked TEEN TITANS Editor Brian Cunningham into giving us a look-see at what goes into creating the RAVAGER co-feature, which will kick off with TEEN TITANS #72(in stores on 6/24, natch), from writer Sean McKeever and artist Yildiray Cinar. Take it away, Brian:

ravager01_01rough1

"Yildiray’s such a strong storyteller that I wanted to share some of the various stages of his art.

First, he sends along rough page layouts for approval. The layout above is page 1 of the RAVAGER co-feature. Sometimes, either writer Sean McKeever, assistant editor Rex Ogle or myself will notice something amiss that affects the story and request a tweak. Yildiray is wonderful to work with, in that respect — he takes the storytelling very seriously.

This is the pencil art stage. Yildiray really thrives when it comes to adding shadows.

And then Júlio Ferreira worked his magic ink brush on the pages to great effect. Júlio really nails all the wonderful textures in Yildiray’s work.

You’ll notice in this layout for a flashback scene that Yildiray mistakenly gave Deathstroke a full goatee...

...but he gave Slade his shave in the pencil stage.

And Júlio meticulously inks it all in, adding subtle details and textures. I can’t tell you how much of a hoot it is to see pages come in from these guys every step of the way!"

An omen of things to come for the TEEN TITANS

Just what happens after "Deathtrap"? Well, lots. In #72 alone, Wonder Girl finds her leadership challenged, the team faces the Fearsome Five and well, you get this as a first page:

Hm. Ominous. Let's check in with TEEN TITANS editor Brian Cunningham for some more details. Take it away, Brian:

"Which fallen Teen Titan lies in that coffin?

You’ll get your first glimpse come June 17, when Teen Titans #72 hits stores. It’s part one of a three-part opus that will literally shatter this group in ways you won’t expect. I know that statement can tend to come off as overblown hype, but believe you me, it’s gut-check time for this bunch.

I’m willing to bet my prize 1976 DC calendar that Titans fans will be pretty stoked when they read Bryan Q. Miller and Joe Bennett’s brutal three-issue story for our teen heroes. It’s relentless in how much punishment is dished out. And I’m talking punishment on so many levels — between team members, between good guys and bad, and even between bad guys and bad.

Grueling choices must be made throughout, and all actions have dire consequences. Some, as you can plainly see, are much more horrible than others.

I mean, c’mon, I wouldn’t bet my ‘76 DC calendar on just anything!"

'Deathtrap' continues in TEEN TITANS #70

We've previewed the first two parts of the TITANS/VIGILANTE/TEEN TITANS crossover "Deathtrap," but why stop there? Kicking off right after the events of VIGILANTE #5, the issue finds our team getting roped into Jericho's insane plot to take out the other Titans team. But how do you defeat someone that can control your very actions? We don't have the answers for you here, but we do have some pretty Joe Bennett art and Sean McKeever words. Ain't that enough?

TEEN TITANS #70 is on sale 4/29.
