The Best of 2011

There’s still glitter on the streets. Fridges are filled with half-empty bottles of champagne and gyms are extra crowded due to people working on their resolutions. And while we celebrate the beginning of a new year, there’s no better way to ring in 2012 than to reflect on the successes of 2011.

The DC offices were closed all of last week, but that doesn’t mean that press didn’t continue to roll in. Below, take a look at some of the year-end “best of” lists that ran.

CNN’s GEEK OUT highlighted ANIMAL MAN, BATWOMAN, THE FLASH, I, VAMPIRE and JOE THE BARBARIAN in an article about the “unprecedented creativity” in comic books in 2011.

THE ONION’s A.V. CLUB’s list of the best comic books of 2011 included DETECTIVE COMICS, BATMAN, BATWOMAN and ANIMAL MAN. The article also gave individual honors to WONDER WOMAN, O.M.A.C. and JIMMY OLSEN.

GAWKER’s IO9 featured SPACEMAN, ANIMAL MAN, SWAMP THING, BATMAN and FRANKENSTEIN, AGENT OF S.HA.D.E. on their list of the best science fiction and fantasy comic books of 2011.

COMPLEX MAGAZINE’s list of top 25 comic books of 2011 included FLASHPOINT, JUSTICE LEAGUE, NORTHLANDERS, SWAMP THING, WONDER WOMAN, BATWOMAN, ACTION COMICS, DETECTIVE COMICS, BATMAN and ANIMAL MAN.

BLOODY DISGUSTING’s list of top 10 comic books of 2011 included SWEET TOOTH, DETECTIVE COMICS, BATWOMAN and ANIMAL MAN.

AFTER ELLEN highlighted BATWOMAN in their 2011 review of books.

SCRIPPS HOWARD NEWS SERVICE named DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 the biggest comic book story of 2011.

POPDOSE included BATWOMAN, SCALPED and XOMBI on their list of favorite comics of 2011.

COMIC BOOK RESOURCES’ list of top 100 comics of 2011 included BATMAN INCORPORATED, HELLBLAZER, XOMBI, FRANKENSTEIN AGENT OF S.H.A.D.E., THE UNWRITTEN, SWEET TOOTH, THE SHADE, ALL-STAR WESTERN, JONAH HEX, AMERICAN VAMPIRE, FLASHPOINT: BATMAN KNIGHT OF VENGEANCE, O.M.A.C., FABLES, IZOMBIE, BATGIRL, BATMAN, AQUAMAN, ACTION COMICS, SWAMP THING, WONDER WOMAN, BATWOMAN, DETECTIVE COMICS, SCALPED and ANIMAL MAN.

IFANBOY declared DC Comics as their “Publisher of the Year.” Their list of best new books in 2011 included ANIMAL MAN, SPACEMAN, BATMAN and ACTION COMICS. Meanwhile, their list of the top 10 comic events of 2011 included DC: RETROACTIVE and the STAR TREK/LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES crossover, while FLASHPOINT and DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 took the top two spots. And their list of 2011’s best comic book writers included Jeff Lemire (ANIMAL MAN/FRANKENSTEIN, AGENT OF S.H.A.D.E./SWEET TOOTH), Brian Azzarello (WONDER WOMAN/100 BULLETS/SPACEMAN), and taking the #1 spot was Scott Snyder (BATMAN/SWAMP THING/DETECTIVE COMICS/AMERICAN VAMPIRE).

DC Comics All Access: Eddie Berganza

It's the End of the World!!!

Again.

In other words, Happy New Year 2012! This is the year that when December 21 hits, keeping any resolutions won't matter because it all goes apocalyptic!

So what's our mood here at DC? To paraphrase our pal Alfred E. Neuman from MAD, "What, us worried?"

Hardly. Doomsdays are what makes for great stories, and even a cool character here at DC! This just gives us fodder for story material.

So as we start our 5th issues, the end is penultimately near on JL's first arc with Mr. Apokolips himself: Darkseid! Catastrophe strikes in STORMWATCH, and Superman and Grifter will be picking up the pieces in their respective books.

And the coming months look no better for our heroes as the Court of Owls reaches out with their Talons, bringing an end of days to the Batman family. There's a bitter cold end for the Flash when Captain Cold hits Central City. What does it mean to the future when the Teen Titans and Legion Lost meet, or when O.M.A.C. comes to JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL? What happens when the first vampire rises? Will JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK and I, VAMPIRE fall? Is there any hope as the all-consuming Rot moves across ANIMAL MAN and SWAMP THING?

Yup, like I said, the end is only the beginning. This is going to be a great year for DC Comics! Enjoy the Cataclysm, everyone. We are happy to bring it to you!

-- Eddie Berganza, Executive Editor

Previews of Next Week’s DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 Releases

Next week, the DC offices will be closed for the holidays. However, that’s not stopping the final batch of fourth issues of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 from landing in comic book stores on Wednesday. Previews of the various issues have been running for the past few days across the Internet and we’ve compiled them all here on THE SOURCE for your convenience.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY continued previewing DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 on their homepage by premiering an exciting sequence from SUPERMAN #4.

USA TODAY interviewed BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT writer David Finch and ran an exclusive preview of issue #4. “She's a character who can never be caught but loves to be chased," Finch said of the White Rabbit. “It's such a great playful character, and she's a lot of fun to draw. It seems like she's connecting (with fans), which is great.”

And if that’s not enough of the Justice League family for you, MAXIM had a preview of AQUAMAN #4, THE LOS ANGELES TIMES’ HERO COMPLEX debuted pages from THE FLASH #4, GAWKER’s IO9 showed a sequence from THE FURY OF FIRESTORM: THE NUCLEAR MEN #4 and MTV GEEK had a first look at THE SAVAGE HAWKMAN #4.

Over on the darker side of things, REVOLVER MAGAZINE had a preview of JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #4 and FEARNET had a sneak peek at I, VAMPIRE #4.

PASTE MAGAZINE invited you to see nineteenth century Gotham City in ALL-STAR WESTERN #4, COMICVINE previewed VOODOO #4 and NEWSARAMA posted a first look at BLACKHAWKS #4.

THE SCIENCE OF THE FLASH – AUGMENTED COGNITION

Focusing specifically on the concept of augmented cognition that was introduced in issue #2 of the series, SPEEDFORCE.org decided to dig a little deeper into the science behind THE FLASH – with an exclusive interview featuring Dr. Peter A. Hancock, Provost’s Distinguished Research Professor at The University of Central Florida and member of the Augmented Cognition International Society.

“Humans have already evolved to use such abilities. You don’t need to react at ‘super-speed’ if you can anticipate,” said Hancock. “This is, in part, what the prefrontal cortex is for – ‘getting out ahead of time.’ Most of our memory is now being ported to the external technology (e.g., web sources etc). Soon, we will have a growth of equivalent ‘apps’ for certain forms of decision-making (they will come in as advisories, e.g., ‘what should I eat and where today?), the big issue will be attention. We still don’t know enough about attention and the current theories need to be revised. Part of the answer may be biochemical as much as neurocognitive solutions. Neuroscience promises much but progress is actually slow because this is a such a difficult problem. ‘Super-speed’ is also relative. Once everyone works at that rate it will just be the new ‘normal.’ ‘Pre-cognitive’ will simply mean knowing much more concerning the world about you. You can argue people show vast individual differences in this form of ‘awareness’ now.”
