(Everybody’s Talkin’ About) DC Comics-The New 52, Monday Afternoon (ET) Edition

If you picked up THE NEW YORK TIMES over the weekend, you may have seen the feature, “So Far, Sales for New DC Comics Are Super” on the front page of the Arts section. “It’s going to be a record-breaking sales month,” said Gerry Gladston, owner of three Midtown Comics stores in Manhattan. “People have been enjoying the stories, which is the important thing. It’s great to see new faces in the store.”

The piece was also picked up by THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER and NEW YORK MAGAZINE.

Week two of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 kicks off today with more high profile coverage. Ready?

SWAMP THING issue # 1 goes on sale today and the NEW YORK TIMES has a lengthy major profile on writer Scott Snyder in the Arts section. If you haven’t already seen it, there’s an amazing spread from SWAMP THING issue #1 by Yanick Paquette. There’s also an interesting tease about the upcoming BATMAN storyline, with Snyder telling the NYT that “Gotham is trying to show you that everything you draw your strength from is wrong.”

Meanwhile, the HUFFINGTON POST has an exclusive preview of BATWING issue #1 and an interview with Judd Winick about Batwing and the character’s tragic origin story. Winick explains to HUFF PO “the fact that he lost his parents to AIDS and never knew them is one piece of that puzzle.”

Come back for more updates throughout the day. There are a number of big stories that we expect to be breaking shortly. To be continued …

(Everybody’s Talkin’ About) DC Comics-The New 52, Wednesday Afternoon (ET) Edition

With the release of JUSTICE LEAGUE #1 by Geoff Johns and Jim Lee, DC Comics-The New 52 officially kicked off. Coverage has been widespread today. Looking for a comprehensive overview? Look no further.

THE NEW YORK TIMES ran a major feature story on the launch of DC Comics-The New 52 on the front of the Arts section and on their homepage. “We’re not looking for a way of going back to what we did before,” DC Editor-in-Chief Bob Harras told them. “We like to say here, ‘No trap doors.’ This is what we are going to do.”

TODAY.COM interviewed DC Entertainment Co-Publishers Jim Lee and Dan DiDio. (You might have seen the story on MSNBC, too.) “It’s all about getting comics into the hands of new readers,” Lee said. “We’re trying to introduce these characters to new audiences.”

Last night’s Midnight Madness event with JUSTICE LEAGUE creative team Geoff Johns and Jim Lee at Midtown Comics in New York City had an incredible turnout and was a huge success. MSNBC was on location taking photos of everything from fan costumes to BATMAN and SWAMP THING writer Scott Snyder mingling with fans to Geoff and Jim distributing pizza to those who waited in line for hours to get their hands on JUSTICE LEAGUE #1.

ABC NEWS interviewed Geoff and Jim, who discussed everything from new costumes to their collaborative process. “In the case of JUSTICE LEAGUE, we’re actually completely retelling and re-envisioning how they met and why they met and why they stayed together,” Geoff Johns explained. “The goal is to actually have more personality, more conflict, more tension. Everyone knows them as the super-friends, but we’re showing that they’re not actually friends – not yet.”

WIRED MAGAZINE posted a gallery of various JUSTICE LEAGUE character designs by Jim Lee. Take an exclusive look at Jim’s designs for Superman, The Flash and Aquaman and be sure to check out WIRED’s analysis of these characters’ fresh costumes and looks.

With so much excitement about the 52 titles being released, it’s hard to pick a favorite. “The best part is that for all of the different members of [the DC Comics team] that have read all of the books,” DC Entertainment Co-Publisher Dan DiDio told THE WASHINGTON POST, “I can’t find two people with the same Top-Five list. That’s what’s great for me.”

DiDio also caught up with THE VILLAGE VOICE. “We want to get back down to the core characters and rebuild the fiction around them,” he said of DC Comics-The New 52. “This isn't about rehashing stories, but providing things that new readers can relate to."

EBONY.COM looks at diversity in DC Comics-The New 52, including characters like Voodoo, Static Shock, Cyborg, Mister Terrific and Batwing. “When we go to conventions, we see people of all races and genders,” DiDio told them. “We want a real sense that these characters are participating in the same world that exists outside our window.”

DigiDay ran a piece about same-date digital publication. According to Hank Kanalz, SVP of Digital, “What we heard anecdotally is that people have been coming into comic book stores and buying more titles and asking about digital delivery.”

Io9 and MTV GEEK also shed some light on the heralding in of DC Comics-The New 52 with the release of JUSTICE LEAGUE #1. MTV GEEK also announced a special Twitter competition in which you can win each #1 issue being released as part of DC Comics-The New 52. For information on how to enter the contest, click here.

Much, much more to come as major interviews are being conducted as I load this blog post.

Congratulations are in order to Geoff, Jim, Scott Williams and everyone else behind JUSTICE LEAGUE #1. The issue hasn’t even been out for a full day yet and is already sold out. Here's a first look at the cover of the second printing.

A few links of note for Friday

It’s been a hectic and exciting week here at The Source and beyond, so we thought it’d be a good idea to take a minute to round up some of the more notable posts from the last few days:

• DCE Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns unveiled an exclusive look at a live-action screen test for Blue Beetle.

• Speaking of Blue Beetle, we announced exclusively that Jaime Reyes would be a playable character in the BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD video game, with an exclusive still to boot.

• And as you saw earlier today, we also had an exclusive look at Warner Premiere’s BATMAN: UNDER THE RED HOOD DVD.

• We also showed off a first look at the BLACKEST NIGHT HCs, BATMAN: THE RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE #3, Paul Cornell’s first issue on ACTION COMICS and the first part of the JLA/JSA crossover.

• Over on our sister blog GRAPHIC CONTENT, you can find all things Greendale, including a roundup of the impressive press coverage the book has garnered -- including a feature in THE NEW YORK TIMES.

THE BLEED, your spot for all things WildStorm, has been spotlighting Brian Wood and Rebekah Isaacs’ new DV8 series for most of the week as well.

And there you have it. Should be more than enough to get you through the work week’s final hours, eh?

It's Wednesday. We know that means new comics. More specifically, it means a new issue of WEDNESDAY COMICS. Check out the latest SUPERMAN strip installment over at USA TODAY before you head to the shop.

• Over at AIN'T IT COOL NEWS, "Ambush Bug" talks to BLACKEST NIGHT writer Geoff Johns about his plans for the summer event and beyond. A snippet:

BUG: I know BLACKEST NIGHT is just beginning, but do you have things planned out for what’s next?

GJ: I can’t say much, but I will be on GREEN LANTERN for a long time. I have no plans to leave the book. Next year, GREEN LANTERN is going to be my main focus for the entire year. I’m launching a FLASH monthly book soon and there’s going to be a KID FLASH monthly book by Sterling Gates. Those two books are going to work in unison and explore the Flash in very much the same way GREEN LANTERN and GREEN LANTERN CORPS are tied together right now. They’ll be their own separate books, but then they’ll come together. The idea, some of it comes from BLACKEST NIGHT and REBIRTH, but the idea is to explore what it means to be the Flash, what the Speed Force is, and all that and take it to a different level.

• And, speaking of Geoff, in case you missed it, IGN had a lengthy two-part interview with the writer to discuss the recently-unveiled cover to BLACKEST NIGHT #5, featuring Nekron.

• Over at NEWSARAMA, they've got a first look at THE RED CIRCLE: THE WEB.

• Also, the team at iFanboy continue to roll out content from San Diego. Worth a listen.

THE NEW YORK TIMES talks to Chip Kidd about his work and love of comics, including a snazzy slideshow of his DC work.
