Tuesday Roundup: Wonder Woman, Nightwing, Batgirl, Red Hood and More

Okay, before we get into this week’s Roundup, we have just one question. Is this not the creepiest Batgirl cover you’ve ever seen, or what?

Yowza! Stuff of nightmares, that.

Well, at least it is for us. In fairness to poor Barbara, after everything her brother’s put her through, it would probably take a lot to give her nightmares. If she can even sleep at all. Batgirl’s latest challenge kicks off in this week’s BATGIRL #20, which launches us into a new storyline and introduces the Ventriloquist into DC COMICS – THE NEW 52. However, if that cover illustration is any indication, don’t expect your father’s Ventriloquist.

(Actually, if your father does have a Ventriloquist, it’s probably better to go through life without any expectations at all because your life is clearly a lot stranger than most.)

Also in shops tomorrow is VIBE #4 and RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS #20, which mark the second issues by new series writers Sterling Gates and James Tynion IV, respectively. Of course, it’s not too late to grab their first issues if you haven’t yet because these are two runs you don’t want to fall behind on. And speaking of getting caught up on comics, if you haven’t been reading Wonder Woman, you’re going to want to go back and grab the previous 20 issues right now (yes, we’re serious and not we haven’t forgotten how to count—there was a zero issue, remember?). The book is just that good, and seeing how it only gets better from here, now’s the time to jump onboard.

Look for previews of all of those titles below and more, including the second issue of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, new issues of Catwoman, Nightwing and Supergirl, a first look at the last issue of Sword of Sorcery, and more!

Tuesday Roundup: Batman, JLA, Suicide Squad and More

Now that you’ve enjoyed the free comics you’ve snagged this weekend, you’re probably excited for what’s next. Well, friends and fans, you’re in the right place. The Tuesday Roundup is all about what happens next in the pages of your favorite DC comic books.

So what’s happening this week? Ales Kot and Patrick Zircher take over Suicide Squad as the new series creative team, promising a run that’s equal parts horror, humor and nothing-to-lose action. Batman teams up with someone you’ll never believe in the title’s final present-day issue before next month kicks off the massive “Zero Year.” JLA returns with a third issue that suggests this team may be falling apart before it’s even begun. Batman teams up with Jason Todd (someone who’s had some experience with this whole “Robin dying” thing) and questions Carrie Kelley in this month’s Batman and Red Hood. Peter Tomasi and Fernando Pasarin wrap up their twenty-issue run on Green Lantern Corps with an unforgettable final issue.

All that, plus new issues of Constantine, Katana, Superboy, Threshold, Smallville Season 11 and more. Unlike this weekend’s comics, these ones may not be free, but we’ll make certain you get your money’s worth.

Tuesday Roundup: April 30th

Tomorrow’s the first day of a brand new month which means that it’s the perfect time to sample something a little new at the comic store. And as far as DC COMICS – THE NEW 52 goes, it doesn’t get any newer than The Movement.

THE MOVEMENT #1 isn’t just a new ongoing title, it’s an entirely new concept for The New 52. Set well within DC Comics continuity, this series takes a very modern approach to super heroics as a new team arises to protect the common members of society. It’s a look at what happens when a small group of concerned citizens decide they’ve had enough with the greed and corruption and begin fighting back. But what happens when they start getting a taste of power themselves? Will they become yet another testament to its ability to corrupt?

The Movement boasts a star-powered creative team of Gail Simone and Freddie Williams II, and is the first of two new boundary-pushing titles to join The New 52 this month. (Look for the second to hit stores a bit later.)

Of course, if you’re looking to spend some time with old friends as well as new this Wednesday, we have you covered as well with new issues of Detective Comics, Action Comics, Animal Man, Aquaman and Green Arrow. Plus, it appears someone’s returning to her classic look…

Tuesday Roundup: April 23rd

The title’s All-Star Western, not necessarily All-Star Old Western.

Yes, as many of you razor sharp eyed fans guessed the moment you saw the as-yet-incomplete front cover, Booster Gold shows up in the pages of ALL-STAR WESTERN #19 this week. And if you think he’s going to be kicking up tumbleweeds with Jonah Hex in the Old West, think again. In the comic’s newest storyline, the action shifts to the present, and considering that Hex barely fits in during the lawless, gun-slinging days of Old Gotham…well, it’s easy to imagine how well this little excursion is going to go for everyone’s favorite scar-sporting anti-hero.

Also this week, we’ve been talking a lot about the premiere of Teen Titans Go! on Cartoon Network tonight, and there’s little surprise why—it’s hands down one of the funniest blends of super heroics and situational comedy that we’ve seen. But if you prefer your Titans to be facing dark demonic threats with the fate of the world at stake, we have you covered there as well with this week’s TEEN TITANS #19. We’re guessing the Beast Boy of Teen Titans Go! may want to have a word with the Beast Boy of Teen Titans…

But that’s not all! Also this week, we witness Grant Morrison ramp up to his stunning final issue of Batman, Incorporated in BATMAN, INCORPORATED #10. The Flash and Swamp Thing find themselves at guest-starring odds in JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #19. And the Comedian’s story finishes up not with a bang, but with many of them in BEFORE WATCHMEN: COMEDIAN #6.

Here are the DC Comics previews that hit the web this past week…

Tuesday Roundup: April 16th

It’s tough being the new kid on the block. That’s true whether it’s your first day at a new job, your first time pitching for the local baseball team, or your first time meeting your new neighbors—when you’re literally the new kid on the block. No one likes being the rookie, the freshman, the cub. You feel like you have much to prove, and it seems like everyone’s scrutinizing your every move.

So how must it feel to be Cisco Ramon? Young, inexperienced, trying to make sense of his life and newly acquired powers, and now a part of the newly formed Justice League of America, where he’s expected to be able to take down the Flash. No pressure, guys. Vibe’s comic has proven to be an intriguing companion title to Geoff Johns and David Finch’s Justice League of America in that it gives us the chance to see the team and the events unfolding around it from a different, very relatable point of view. Not many of us know what it’s like to possess top security clearance and head up a team of super-powered agents like Amanda Waller and Steve Trevor, but all of us know what it’s like to feel out of place and overwhelmed, while at the same time excited and wanting to do the best that we can.

Cisco’s story continues this week in JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA’S VIBE #3. However, Vibe isn’t the only JLA member feeling the pressure of their latest gig. In fact, judging by the full cover for this week’s CATWOMAN #19, Selina’s not handling the stress of being a hero well at all.

Of course, Catwoman and Vibe are hardly the only heroes having a rough week. Kyle Rayner continues to struggle with the “Wrath of the First Lantern,” the original Justice League seems to be coming apart at the seams and Diana must deal with more family drama (to put it mildly) and a relationship with Orion that’s getting more complex by the minute. Maybe everyone should take a break and book a nice getaway to Gemworld… Wha-WAIT, Eclipso?!!

Tough week to be a super hero. Great week to be a comics fan. Here are the DC Comics previews that hit the web this past week...

Tuesday Roundup: April 9th

It’s been a little while since Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained landed a pair of Oscars for Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor (for Christoph Waltz’s sublime performance as Dr. Schultz), and we still have another week until the movie hits Blu-Ray and DVD. And you know what we’ve realized?

We’ve really missed Django, Schultz and Broomhilda, and their mission of rescue and revenge. It’s been a while since the last time we spent some time with these characters. So fortunately for all of us, the third issue of Vertigo’s adaptation of the acclaimed film is out this week. In case you missed the first two chapters, you should know that the comic book is based on the first draft of Tarantino’s script, and as such, differs from the final film in some intriguing ways. It’s also adapted by Reginald Hudlin, who along with being a pretty darn amazing comic book writer, also served as a producer on the film. The result is a comic book adaptation that stays true to the property while also offering you something new. If you’re a fan of the film, of Quentin Tarantino, or of the film development process in general, you’re not going want to miss out on this one.

Of course, if you’re here for the super heroes, we have you well covered there as well. By now, you’ve likely seen the shocking gatefold cover of BATMAN AND RED ROBIN #19. Admit it, which of you thought you’d be seeing Carrie Kelley pop up in a DC comic book this year? We certainly didn’t, and you know what? We’ve missed her as well. We’ve also missed the Spectre, so it’s nice to know he’ll be turning up in the pages of Constantine. It’s also been a little while since we’ve seen the Unknown Soldier, so we’re looking forward to seeing how he ignites the powder keg that is Suicide Squad. And it’s been a REALLY long while since we’ve said hi to Majestic, and after seeing the full cover to TEAM 7 #7…well, the only thing we can really say is, “HELLLLO, Majestic!” Yes, it’s a week for getting caught up with some old friends in the pages of some fresh new comics.

Tuesday Roundup: April 2nd

Batman’s looking pretty darn sprightly for 900. Of course, we’re not talking years, but issues. If you didn’t already know, this week’s DETECTIVE COMICS #19 is actually the 900th issue of the series, and we’re celebrating with an 80-page issue filled with insightful stories written by series writer John Layman (along with a Bane-centered one scripted by Talon writer James Tynion IV) and set in all corners of Gotham. Of course, it wouldn’t be much of a comic book extravaganza without some…er, extravganzing artists. So, along with series artist Jason Fabok, how do Andy Clarke, Mikel Janin, Dustin Nguyen, Henrik Jonsson and Sandu Florea strike you?

Well, hopefully they don’t literally strike you. We’ll leave that sort of striking to Batman.

But it’s sure to be one wildly memorable ride for Batman fans, and a great starting point for anyone new to reading the world’s longest running comic book.

Of course, that’s just the tip of the comic book iceberg this week. Swamp Thing enters an exciting new era with its new creative team of Charles Soule and Kano, Batwing will see changes a-plenty from this week forward as Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray take the writing reins, the intrigue grows as Green Arrow delves deeper in the conspiracy involving his father, and the Man of Steel gets a fresh start in our other long-running title, Action Comics.

Tuesday Roundup: March 26th

If you’re a Batman fan, many of you comic book conversations this past month have likely revolved around the death of Damian Wayne. While we’ve been given glimpses of how the bat family is dealing with the death of the current Robin (or not dealing with it), we haven’t yet heard anything further from the writer or title responsible for the shocking turn of events. Not until now, at least. This Wednesday sees the release of BATMAN, INCORPORATED #9, the first issue of Batman, Incorporated since Damian’s death. While Damian’s story may be finished, the story Morrison set out to tell with Batman, Inc. is not, and this week we’ll get the next chapter in this tragic tale of feuding parents. Even better, you don’t have to wait till Wednesday to get your first sense of where things are going. Along with offering up an exclusive preview of issue #9, Buzzfeed had a few questions for Mr. Morrison about Damian and the current storyline, and the writer had some very interesting answers for them—perhaps the most resounding of which is, no, Damian won’t be back. Not in any story that he tells, at least.

Of course, that’s just the start of what you’ll find in on the physical and virtual comic racks this week. You’ll definitely want to take a look at Time Warp, the latest mind-bending sci-fi anthology from Vertigo. This one features stories by the likes of Damon Lindelof, Jeff Lemire, Gail Simone, Peter Milligan, Matt Kindt and Ray Fawkes, many with a time-travel slant. You can also look for another “Requiem” tale in TEEN TITANS #18, “Wrath of the First Lantern” in RED LANTERNS #18, the Mad Hatter in BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT #18, the start of a kingdom-shattering new storyline in AQUAMAN #18, Vandal Savage in ALL-STAR WESTERN #18, and much, much more.

Tuesday Roundup: March 19th

This week, we say farewell to one old friend while saying hello to another. Since the launch of DC COMICS – THE NEW 52 in 2011, Grant Morrison has redefined the early days of the Man of Steel in the pages of Action Comics with a series of stories that have been both intelligent and action-heavy. This week’s ACTION COMICS #18 is his swan song on his title, and while it may be sad to see him go, he’s leaving us in grand form with an extra-sized issue that promises to challenge Superman in every way possible (and perhaps a few that weren’t…at least, not until Mr. Morrison dreamed them up).

But if the thought of saying goodbye makes you sad, don’t forget that this is also a week of new beginnings as John Constantine makes his DC Comics – The New 52 debut. CONSTANTINE #1 comes to us courtesy of Justice League Dark co-writers Ray Fawkes and Jeff Lemire, but don’t make the mistake of thinking this new series will just be a simple spin-off of their other one. It has a tone and focus that’s all its own, featuring an unfiltered, more manipulative magic user, and yes…plenty of cigarette smoke. You can learn a lot more about Constantine’s new series by checking out USA Today’s interview with Ray Fawkes below. Or, you know, picking up the first issue on Wednesday…

Of course, that’s just the beginning of the great stuff we have in store for you this week. The death of Damian Wayne continues to be felt, this week in the pages of Nightwing and Catwoman. “Wrath of the First Lantern” rolls on in Green Lantern: New Guardians, while Constantine also makes an appearance in the pages of Sword of Sorcery. And of course, let’s not forget our two Justice Leagues, which both get new installments with JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #2 and JUSTICE LEAGUE #18—in which Cyborg gets the spotlight for the very first time!

Tuesday Roundup: March 12th

Many fans have been taking the death of young Damian Wayne hard, and for good reason. Since his introduction, Damian struggled against his violent and dangerous tendencies to become a force for good in the war against crime in Gotham. Even more important, he had embraced his role within the Wayne family, building relationships not just with his father, but other extended members such as Alfred, Dick, Barbara and Tim. Sometimes those relationships were competitive and fueled by a (often dangerous in Damian’s case) youthful need to be the best to ever wear the red and yellow, but that just made Damian a more fascinating character.

Yes, we’re all mourning the loss of Damian Wayne. But if fans are taking it hard, how do you think our characters are going to fare?

This week, we start to find out as a series of “Requiem” issues hit the Bat books dealing with the repercussions of last month’s BATMAN, INCORPORATED #8. Look for gripping, emotional storylines in BATMAN #18, BATGIRL #18 and an all-silent BATMAN AND ROBIN #18. We’ve got previews of all three issues below, along with first looks at the new installments of Threshold, Demon Knights, Green Lantern Corps, Suicide Squad, the second issue of Katana and the final issue of Before Watchmen: Ozymandias! We’d say there’s nothing to take your mind off a death in the Bat family like a giant squid, but if you’ve read WATCHMEN you know that the squid’s responsible for…well…never mind.
