Tuesday Roundup: March 5th

People are still talking about the aftermath of last week’s BATMAN, INCORPORATED #8, and we can certainly understand why. But if you were expecting an emotional breather after that shocking turn of events, think again. Last month marked the conclusion of the crossover storyline, “Rotworld,” but that doesn’t mean the story’s over. In this week’s ANIMAL MAN #18 and SWAMP THING #18 (which also serves as Scott Snyder’s final issue as series writer), we discover the heartbreaking fallout from Anton Arcane’s attack on the living world. And if you’ve come to care about the characters of these two titles the way that we have, it’s an emotional gut-punch. In fact, we think the cover of Animal Man sums things up pretty perfectly.

Sometimes, subtlety just doesn’t cut it.

Of course, it’s not all sadness and tragedy this week. Doctor Fate comes to Earth 2, Jay Garrick guest stars in Smallville Season 11, “Wrath of the First Lantern” continues in Green Lantern and “H’El on Earth” concludes explosively in the pages of SUPERMAN #17. In short, no matter your mood, you’ll find a great DC comic this week to suit it. Though we suggest stocking up…for when your mood changes. First looks at all of this week’s comics are below!

Tuesday Roundup: February 26th

It’s shaping up to be one rough week for members of the Bat-family. After their absolutely brutal run-in with the Joker in “Death of the Family,” they now have to contend with, well, a death in the family. If you’ve read yesterday’s New York Post article, you know what we’re referring to. If you don’t, and you want to find out, the link to the article and this week’s preview of BATMAN, INCORPORATED #8 is right down below. We can only speculate what this is going to do to Bruce Wayne, but it’s a fair guess that Batman’s about to earn that “dark” in Dark Knight. Big time.

Actually, it’s a pretty dark week overall with new issues Justice League Dark and Batman: The Dark Knight, to say nothing about the DCU-gone-bad nightmare of Injustice: Gods Among Us, the bloody rage of Red Lanterns and the existentialism of Before Watchmen: Dr. Manhattan (which wraps up this week with issue #4). Fortunately, if you’re looking for something that’s exciting without making you also want to crank up the Morrissey as you cry silently in your pillow, we have you covered with new issues of The Flash, Aquaman, All-Star Western and Teen Titans.

Tuesday Roundup: February 12th

A quick look below will show you that this is a massive week for DC Comics, but you know who’s also having a historical week? Geoff Johns.

Last week we revealed the sad news that Johns will be ending his groundbreaking, ten-year run on Green Lantern. However, that’s yet to take place, and with the launch of Justice League of America and Justice League of America’s Vibe, this week represents a perfect storm of comic books written by Johns. And a perfect week for his fans! JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #1, JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA’S VIBE #1, JUSTICE LEAGUE #17 (there’s plenty of justice to go around!) and GREEN LANTERN #17 (which kicks off Johns’ final storyline, the epic “Wrath of the First Lantern”) all will hit the physical and digital comic racks this Wednesday.

Of course, as much as we may love the guy, man cannot live on Geoff Johns alone, and there are plenty of other highly anticipated comics arriving this week written by the likes of Grant Morrison (ACTION COMICS #17), Brian Azzarello (WONDER WOMAN #17), Bill Willingham (FABLES #126), Paul Levitz and Keith Giffen (LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #17), B. Tuesday Roundup: February 12th

To paraphrase Slade Wilson on last week’s episode of Arrow, we like swords.

Let’s face it, blades are cool. As a weapon, there’s something almost romantic about them. They’re at the very heart of swashbuckling. What’s a pirate without his cutlass? A knight without his longsword? A general without his saber? Therefore, it’s hardly surprising that we’re looking forward to this week’s KATANA #1. Tatsu’s been a cool, quiet character in Birds of Prey that recently began showing some of her depth and humanity in that comic’s most recent storyline. Now, as she headlines her own ongoing title, we’re about to be treated to far more. How’d she become such a cold, focused killer? Where’d she get such an amazing sword? And is that really the soul of her husband in that thing?

Written by Ann Nocenti and drawn by Alex Sanchez, Katana #1 hits stores this Wednesday, but you can get your first look at it below. Also dropping on Wednesday is BATMAN #17, which concludes Snyder and Capullo’s Joker tale, “Death of the Family.” If you’ve been reading the storyline so far, and especially if you’ve also been reading the tie-in stories in titles like Nightwing, Batgirl and Batman and Robin, you know that it’s all been leading to this. It’s time to learn just what the Joker’s cooked up for Batman and his companions. If you’ve been wondering what’s in those serving dishes, you’re about to find out.

Of course, those are but two of the full plethora of titles we have coming out this week. You can also look for BEFORE WATCMEN: COMEDIAN #5, BATGIRL #17, THRESHOLD #2, SUICIDE SQUAD #17 and more. Check out our previews below and we’ll see you in the shops!

Tuesday Roundup: February 5th

Figures that Rotworld would hit right before Valentine’s Day. It’s the one day of the year where your honey is pretty much guaranteed to be in the mood for some snuggling, and yet there’s a fairly good chance (if the pages of Animal Man and Swamp Thing are to be believed) that he or she may develop a case of the worst acne in history while beginning to overemphasize any s-sounds. Sssssound familiar?

Okay, we’re pretty sure that’s not going to happen, but I guess we won’t know for certain until we’ve read this week’s ANIMAL MAN #17 and SWAMP THING #17 and learn whether or not the Rot’s succeeded in snuffing out the last vestiges of humanity. And if you’ve read last month’s issues, you know things aren’t looking so good.

But you know what IS looking good? Green Arrow. That’s because issue #17 is the first to feature our new creative team of Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino, and if you’re a fan of gritty, street-level superheroics, then you should definitely consider giving the Emerald Archer a look this Wednesday. Or right now. After all, we have a great preview of GREEN ARROW #17 up today (and it even includes a cool interview with Lemire), we also have first looks at the aforementioned Animal Man and Swamp Thing, and other great books including EARTH 2 #9, DIAL H #9, DETECTIVE COMICS #17 and STORMWATCH #17.

Tuesday Roundup: January 29th

If you’re a DC Comics fan, weeks rarely get bigger than this one.

Okay, we realize we say that a lot around here. In fact, if you had a dime for each time we have, you’d probably have enough to snag that copy of ABSOLUTE BATMAN AND ROBIN we know that you’ve been eyeing. But in a week that includes the release of two extra-sized, can’t-miss new annuals, some of our most exciting new releases are literally bigger than our average comics. Trust us, you’re not going to want to miss BATMAN AND ROBIN ANNUAL #1 and the crucial GREEN LANTERN CORPS ANNUAL #1, which wraps up “Rise of the Third Army.” (And while we’re on the topic, can we just take a moment to lift our hats to the wonderful Peter J. Tomasi, who scripted both of them? Nice work, sir!) Of course, there’s much to enjoy outside our annuals as well, including the latest Before Watchmen outing, BEFORE WATCHMEN: DOLLAR BILL #1, and JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #16, which features the winning character from last week’s “DC Comics Challenge” on Syfy’s Face Off. There’s also “Throne of Atlantis” in AQUAMAN #16, “HE’l on Earth” in SUPERMAN #16, the debut of a new villain in THE FLASH #16, the print debut of INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US #1 and a brand new He-Man and the Masters of the Universe origin tale one-shot, written by Joshua Hale Fialkov and drawn by Ben Oliver!

Tuesday Roundup: January 22nd

DC comic book readers are one diverse crew. While they may all share a common passion for our books and for comics in general, beyond that tastes can vary wildly. However, no matter what shade of DC reader you may be, this week surely has something you can sink your teeth into. (Though hopefully not literally. That’s not the sort of “taste” we’re talking about here.)

If you’re dying for a new installment of “Death of the Family,” we’ve got you covered with Wednesday’s NIGHTWING #16. Or if you feel like you’ve been treading water since the ending of last month’s AQUAMAN #15, then be sure to grab JUSTICE LEAGUE #16, which continues the “Throne of Atlantis” storyline. Are you watching the Watchmen? Well, Before Watchmen continues this week with BEFORE WATCHMEN: MINUTEMEN #6, which just happens to be the final issue in Darwyn Cooke’s gripping look at the early days of costumed crime-fighting. And let’s not overlook the continuation of “Rise of the Third Army” in GREEN LANTERN #16 and GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS #16, a new Snow White centered storyline in FABLES #125, “H’el on Earth” in SUPERGIRL #16, New Gods in WONDER WOMAN #16 and the extra-sized awesomeness of SUPERBOY ANNUAL #1!

Tuesday Roundup: January 15th

When it comes to storytelling, you couldn’t ask for a bigger canvas than the far reaches of outer space. And when it comes to stories set beyond the stars, there may be no better medium than comic books. After all, comics can tell a fully visual story limited only by the creative team’s imagination. There’s nowhere they can’t take you. Which means, you can expect a lot from Threshold, the exciting new sci-fi series joining the ranks of DC COMICS – THE NEW 52 this week. Written by comics legend Keith Giffen and drawn by Tom Raney and Scott Kolins, THRESHOLD #1 tells two equally intriguing tales—a main story featuring disgraced Green Lantern Jediah Caul and a backup starring the greedy, great Larfleeze. Both stories promise plenty of two-fisted action and a colorful cast of roughneck characters. The first issue hits shops on Wednesday, but you can check out a preview and an interview with Giffen below.

Of course, if there’s one thing that can rival the scope of Threshold, it’s “Death of the Family,” which continues this week in the pages of BATMAN #16, BATGIRL #16 and BATMAN AND ROBIN #16. Enjoy these first-looks at all of them, along with io9’s look at DEMON KNIGHTS #16, which launches into an exciting new direction at the hands of new writer Robert Venditti. All this plus “He’l on Earth” in SUPERBOY #16, new writer Michael Alan Nelson on THE RAVAGERS #8, new miniseries INSURGENT #1 and much, much more.

Tuesday Roundup: January 8th

We’d never want to discourage people from visiting any of our fair cities, but if you were planning on paying a visit to Gotham this week, you may want to think about rescheduling. After all, the Joker’s been running rampant across town for the past few months in “Death of the Family,” and this week the Penguin gets involved in DETECTIVE COMICS #16. And things are looking even worse in the pages of SWAMP THING #16, where the Rot has completely overrun Gotham and really brought out the “dark” in the Dark Knight.

However, while we wouldn’t recommend visiting Gotham this week, reading about the horror taking place on the Gotham streets is not only recommended—it’s a total rush! You can start with Detective and Swamp Thing, but you shouldn’t overlook LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT #4, with its cool collection of creative teams (each with a distinct take on the Dark Knight). After that, feel free to shift your attention to Metropolis with ACTION COMICS #16 and ANIMAL MAN #16, Star City with GREEN ARROW #16, Tinasha with BATWING #16 or the outer reaches of space itself with the extra-sized GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS ANNUAL #1. After a week back at work and school, you could probably use another vacation. Well, if you’re a DC reader you can take an extended one this Wednesday—all from the comfort of your living room.

With group solicits hitting the web over the past few days, it’s understandable why fans have started looking ahead to March. But let’s not forget that there’s plenty of great action taking place in your favorite DC comics right now. This very week. And you can get a jump start on it today by checking out some of our new comic previews below.

“Death of the Family” continues in a big way this Wednesday, with new issues of Batman, Batgirl, Suicide Squad and a new Bat-title joining the storyline—Batman and Robin. Considering Joker’s history with Robin, it’s hardly surprising that his return would have huge ramifications for the boy currently keeping up that mantle, Bruce Wayne’s son, Damian. You can get a taste of what they may be in our preview of BATMAN AND ROBIN #15 as well as the Peter J. Tomasi interviews that accompany that preview on MTV Geek, IGN, Newsarama and Comic Vine. Of course, you don’t want to overlook this week’s new issues of Before Watchmen: Rorschach, Before Watchmen: Dr. Manhattan, Green Lantern Corps (which continues “Rise of the Third Army” and was also written by Tomasi), Superboy, Demon Knights and more!
