USA Today Runs FLASHPOINT Feature

USA Today ran a feature today on the making of FLASHPOINT, as part of their coverage of Free Comic Book Day.

Head on over to their website to read creator and editorial commentary and to get an insider's pass to the creation of the series. And while you're there, be sure to also click on the image slideshow to see a gallery of stunning art, including Andy Kubert's process piece of the first two-page spread of the series, character designs, and all three of the first issue's covers.

FLASHPOINT #1, in stores next week, is written by Geoff Johns and is illustrated by Andy Kubert and Sandra Hope and colored by Alex Sinclair.

Dick Grayson looks into the ‘Black Mirror’ in DETECTIVE COMICS #871

Somehow, tools, evidence and weapons relating to some of Batman’s deadliest foes are ending up in the wrong hands – and people are dying because of it.

Newly ensconced Batman Dick Grayson must piece together the pieces of the mystery, which point to a deadly new adversary. But will he be able to bring down his new enemy before more die?

Writer Scott Snyder, the co-creator of THE NEW YORK TIMES-bestselling AMERICAN VAMPIRE (which just got a very nice writeup in the ASSOCIATED PRESS, featuring an interview with the legendary Stephen King) joins forces with artist and LOSERS co-creator Jock to kick off “Black Mirror,” the creative team’s first arc on DETECTIVE COMICS – and it’s as on target as you can imagine. This issue puts the emphasis on the “detective” part of the book’s title, putting Grayson a few steps behind a new adversary while lives hang in the balance. For more hints, swing by USA TODAY, which featured a first look at the series along with some comments from Snyder.

But that’s not all. The issue also features Snyder and artist Francesco Francavilla’s COMMISSIONER GORDON co-feature, which brings a haunting ghost from Gordon’s past screaming into his present. Creepy, chilling and must-read stuff.

DETECTIVE COMICS #871 hits tomorrow.

A few links of not for Thursday: BATMAN AND ROBIN #16’s big reveal

bmrbbvr_dlx_dj-red2

If you’ve been following us on Twitter or Facebook, you’ve probably noticed that there’s been a huge outpouring of press in reaction to the shocking conclusion of BATMAN AND ROBIN #16. It all started early yesterday, as THE ASSOCIATED PRESS broke the news that (stop reading now if you haven’t picked up the issue) Bruce Wayne had been secretly funding Batman for years, and would expand his funding and launch BATMAN INCORPORATED in an interview with the man behind it all, writer Grant Morrison.

With that, we were off to the races. DC Comics Editor in Chief Bob Harras did a number of interviews, including chats with USA TODAY, THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, CNN’s MARQUEE BLOG, TIME TECHLAND, AOL COMICS ALLIANCE, THE L.A. TIMES' HERO COMPLEX, COMIC BOOK RESOURCES, NEWSARAMA and IO9.

And in case you missed it, WIRED’s Scott Thill had an epic, engaging and all-around interesting interview with Morrison, which is a must-read for fans of the man’s work. Also, the issue's been getting raves -- with glowing reviews at POP MATTERS and IGN to kick things off.

Have you picked up your copy of BATMAN AND ROBIN v2: BATMAN VS. ROBIN yet?

A few links of note: SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE, take three

Another day, another dose of major, mainstream press attention for writer J. Michael Straczynski and artist Shane Davis’ SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE original graphic novel. Have you snagged your copy? I suggest you get to it, post haste.

Why the rush? Well…

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS announced that the OGN has sold out of inventory, meaning people are really, really excited by this take on the Man of Steel. In addition to the AP, the last 24 hours saw in-print and online coverage at USA TODAY, a sterling review by Bryan Young at THE HUFFINGTON POST and another review at NPR’s MONKEY SEE blog.

So, yeah. Fairly quiet week here.

Stay tuned to The Source for more EARTH ONE news.

• The collection’s also gotten some props at AOL’s COMICS ALLIANCE and io9.

Been a busy week here at The Source, with all the fun surrounding THE FLASH, so here are some notable links you may have missed while hitting refresh:

• FIRST WAVE writer Brian Azzarello's been making the interview rounds, with pieces at USA TODAY, AOL's COMICS ALLIANCE, NEWSARAMA, COMIC BOOK RESOURCES and SCRIPPS HOWARD's wire service, some with artistic master Rags Morales joining in on the fun.

• WIRED's GEEKDAD blog is taking votes for the first-ever GEEKDAD AWARDS. In the category of Best Comic, you can choose from a number of titles, including WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE CAPED CRUSADER?, WEDNESDAY COMICS and BLACKEST NIGHT.

It's Wednesday. We know that means new comics. More specifically, it means a new issue of WEDNESDAY COMICS. Check out the latest SUPERMAN strip installment over at USA TODAY before you head to the shop.

• Over at AIN'T IT COOL NEWS, "Ambush Bug" talks to BLACKEST NIGHT writer Geoff Johns about his plans for the summer event and beyond. A snippet:

BUG: I know BLACKEST NIGHT is just beginning, but do you have things planned out for what’s next?

GJ: I can’t say much, but I will be on GREEN LANTERN for a long time. I have no plans to leave the book. Next year, GREEN LANTERN is going to be my main focus for the entire year. I’m launching a FLASH monthly book soon and there’s going to be a KID FLASH monthly book by Sterling Gates. Those two books are going to work in unison and explore the Flash in very much the same way GREEN LANTERN and GREEN LANTERN CORPS are tied together right now. They’ll be their own separate books, but then they’ll come together. The idea, some of it comes from BLACKEST NIGHT and REBIRTH, but the idea is to explore what it means to be the Flash, what the Speed Force is, and all that and take it to a different level.

• And, speaking of Geoff, in case you missed it, IGN had a lengthy two-part interview with the writer to discuss the recently-unveiled cover to BLACKEST NIGHT #5, featuring Nekron.

• Over at NEWSARAMA, they've got a first look at THE RED CIRCLE: THE WEB.

• Also, the team at iFanboy continue to roll out content from San Diego. Worth a listen.

THE NEW YORK TIMES talks to Chip Kidd about his work and love of comics, including a snazzy slideshow of his DC work.

It's almost the weekend, so let's give you a few things to read to make the work day go by a tad faster, shall we?

THE NEW YORK TIMES has unveiled it's latest Graphic Novel Best Seller list, and GREEN LANTERN: RAGE OF THE RED LANTERNS is sitting pretty atop the chart. Other notables: FINAL CRISIS, THE KILLING JOKE, BATMAN R.I.P., JOKER and ALL STAR BATMAN AND ROBIN, THE BOY WONDER.

USA TODAY has the second chapter of WEDNESDAY COMICS' SUPERMAN strip. If you haven't read it yet, it's definitely worth the click.

Neil Gaiman was on NPR's "Talk of the Nation" to chat up WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE CAPED CRUSADER.

NEWSARAMA's got the latest 20 Questions with Dan DiDio, covering a plethora of topics, including BLACKEST NIGHT, WEDNESDAY COMICS and some surprises.

• The BLACKEST NIGHT goodness continues, with IGN unveiling preview pages from BLACKEST NIGHT: TALES OF THE CORPS #2, CBR reviewed the first issue of the series and MTV's SPLASH PAGE blog gives the book some love.

It's Wednesday. You know what that means, right?

WEDNESDAY COMICS #1 is on stands. Let the games begin, folks.

Haven't headed over to the comic shop yet? To whet your appetite, USA TODAY has the first installment of John Arcudi and artist Lee Bermejo's SUPERMAN -- both in today's print edition and online. USA TODAY will continue to serialize the strip weekly on their site.

Still on the fence? Well, first off -- shame on you. Who can resist a weekly series that features the talents of Neil Gaiman, Brian Azzarello, Mike Allred, Karl Kerschl, Joe Kubert, Walt Simonson, Dave Gibbons, Kyle Baker, Kurt Busiek, Amanda Connor...to name a few? But because we're all about doing our due diligence here, why not peruse THE NEW YORK DAILY NEWS' piece on the title and Dan DiDio's interview with THE CLEVELAND PLAIN-DEALER? Or THE TOLEDO FREE PRESS's feature on the weekly series?

More? Ok. Well, both PUBLISHERS WEEKLY COMICS WEEK and THE HONOLULU STAR-BULLETIN chatted up WEDNESDAY COMICS mastermind Mark Chiarello, who's the man responsible for gathering such an impressive lineup of A-list talent.

And if you're not at least a foot out the door by now, keep your eyes peeled at COMIC BOOK RESOURCES and AOL/ASYLUM's COMICS ALLIANCE blog, as both will have interviews with Chiarello up later today.

And,  in case you missed it this morning, our own Dan DiDio swung by the offices of  the FOX BUSINESS channel to talk up the series. Check  out the video here.

Well? Hop to it.
