The Best of 2011

The end of the year means a lot of things: traffic around Times Square, midnight kisses and the clinking of champagne flutes across the globe and gyms full of people looking to stick to their resolutions. But in the publishing industry, one thing that the end of the year also signifies is the publication of various “best of the year” lists.

USA TODAY just published their story on the best things to happen in the comic book industry in 2011. Best writer? Scott Snyder. Best superhero artist? J.H. Williams. Best artist return? Jim Lee. Best worst Super hero? Aquaman. It's all there--and more, with multiple name checks for DC COMICS-THE NEW 52.

THE VILLAGE VOICE included ANIMAL MAN and SPACEMAN on their list of the best comic books and graphic novels of the year while NPR's MONKEY SEE BLOG's list featured DEMON KNIGHTS, ANIMAL MAN, DAYTRIPPER, AQUAMAN and WONDER WOMAN.

Over on THE TORONTO STAR’s list of the top 10 graphic novels of the year, you’ll find DC COMICS: THE NEW 52 OMNIBUS and the deluxe edition of JOE THE BARBARIAN.

Meanwhile, IGN dubbed the launch of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 the “best moment of the year.” AMERICAN VAMPIRE: SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST was also named the “best miniseries,” SECRET SIX #36 won the award for “best single issue” and Scott Snyder was again crowned the “best writer.”

And while you’re at IGN, be sure to check out their list of the Best Vertigo and Icon comics books of 2011. AMERICAN VAMPIRE came in at #1 with THE UNWRITTEN, SWEET TOOTH, SCALPED, IZOMBIE, FABLES, and NORTHLANDERS all making the Top 10 list.

Neil Gaiman and Hank Kanalz talk Amazon

AMAZON’s OMNIVORACIOUS BLOG posted an exclusive interview with writer Neil Gaiman, where amongst other things, he discusses the new digital availability of SANDMAN. So what’s his personal favorite volume of the iconic series? “Probably ‘A Game of You,’ because it's most people's least favourite volume, and I love it all the more for that,” Gaiman revealed.

Yesterday, we announced the new DC Entertainment storefront on Amazon.com. This news came following the announcement a few weeks back that 100 titles spanning all DC Entertainment publishing imprints – DC Comics, Vertigo & MAD – would be available digitally exclusively on the new Amazon Kindle Fire.

“The store is an aggregator of DC Comics digital and print titles,” Hank Kanalz, SVP of Digital, told PUBLISHERS WEEKLY. “It will have more in print than the 100 graphic novels, Amazon has the entire DC Comics backlist.”

“It exposes all our new material to 144 million Amazon customers," he continued to NEWSARAMA. "They've built a store for us. We're on their commercials. We're in their collateral material. It kind of blows the doors wide open."

For more coverage on DC Entertainment’s exclusive deal with Amazon, check out THE LOS ANGELES TIMES’ HERO COMPLEX and COMIC BOOK RESOURCES.

(Everybody’s Talkin’ About) DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, Thursday Afternoon (ET) Edition

Lots of big things this afternoon, folks!

ROLLING STONE featured their exclusive preview of next week’s JUSTICE LEAGUE #2 on their homepage. “So how do we get from that world to the world we all kind of know DC to be, which is a one of hope and where these characters are more champions than outcasts?" DC Entertainment Co-Publisher and JUSTICE LEAGUE artist Jim Lee told ROLLING STONE. "That's what JUSTICE LEAGUE is about. It's about showing when these characters come together to save humanity, and humanity accepts who they are. Then there's that transition from that kind of dark world to one that has a little bit more hope and a brighter future."

VARIETY published an article about the widening of the Batman franchise via the marketing campaign behind the BATMAN: ARKHAM CITY video game, calling out the game’s accompanying comic book series.

Entertainment website UGO has your first look at DC UNIVERSE PRESENTS #2 by Paul Jenkins and Bernard Chang.

And the day has finally come. IFANBOY broke their six-week consecutive selection of titles from DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 as their “Pick of the Week.” Some upstart named Scott Snyder claimed the title this week with his terrific Vertigo series, AMERICAN VAMPIRE: SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST. Seven weeks in a row of DC Entertainment titles? Not too shabby if I do say so myself.

And speaking of Vertigo, this afternoon MTV GEEK announced a new ongoing series for the imprint called DOMINIQUE LAVEAU: VOODOO CHILD, written by Selwyn Seyfu and illustrated by Denys Cowan.

(Everybody’s Talkin’ About) DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, Tuesday Morning (ET) Edition

(Ethan Van Sciver’s variant cover for GREEN LANTERN #3)

It's Tuesday morning. Do you know where your previews are? Here's a rundown of exclusive previews from the 13 new issues from DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 on sale tomorrow. Ready?

CNN’s GEEK OUT has your first look at GREEN LANTERN #2 by Geoff Johns, Doug Mahnke, Christian Alamy and Keith Champagne.

MAXIM has the exclusive preview of BATMAN AND ROBIN #2 by Peter J. Tomasi, Patrick Gleason and Mick Gray.

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER’s HEAT VISION previewed FRANKENSTEIN, AGENT OF S.H.A.D.E. #2.

THE LOS ANGELES TIMES’ HERO COMPLEX debuted pages from MISTER TERRIFIC #2 by Eric Wallace, Gianluca Gugliotta and Wayne Faucher.

IGN gave you your first glimpse at SUPERBOY #2 by Scott Lobdell, R.B. Silva and Rob Lean.

Following yesterday's NEW YORK POST newsbreak, AIN’T IT COOL NEWS caught up with WONDER WOMAN writer Brian Azzarello. “You read some of those stories, those are the most human stories that have ever been written,” Azzarello said of the Greek mythology inspiring his series. “They are as emotionally damaged as a lot of people are. And they’re just as damaging! They’re selfish, capricious, angry, loving, loyal, they betray…they’re like human emotions turned up to 11.”

THE TORONTO STAR chatted with local Canadian artists Jeff Lemire, Francis Manapul and Ken Lashley about their respective series and DC COMICS-THE NEW 52. “I think the books are different, which is something I was looking for,” Lemire said of the relaunch. “Animal Man is a very furious, very dark, emotional story, while Frankenstein is a really big, fun action-adventure, kind of over-the-top sort of thing.”

And while everyone's still talking about DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, there's another major announcement for DC Entertainment today. Timed to the start of the Frankfurt Book Festival in Germany, USA TODAY announced Vertigo's acquisition of pop culture phenomenon The Millennium Trilogy on the front page of their Life section this morning. Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy, which chronicles the stories of computer hacker Lisbeth Salander and investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist, will get the graphic novel treatment beginning with next year’s THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO. Each book in the trilogy will be divided into two volumes and will be published under DC Entertainment’s Vertigo imprint. Look for THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE in 2013 and THE GIRL WHO KICKED THE HORNETS’ NEST in 2014.

FLASHPOINT FRIDAY: BOOSTER GOLD #45 and FLASHPOINT: KNIGHT OF VENGEANCE #1 Sell Out

[gallery link="file" order="DESC" columns="2"]

A couple of days ago, we announced that FLASHPOINT #2 had followed in the steps of the series’ first issue and had officially sold out. Today, we can announce that just like its preceding FLASHPOINT tie-in issue, BOOSTER GOLD #45 has also sold out. Joining these ranks is FLASHPOINT: BATMAN – KNIGHT OF VENGEANCE, with issue #1 having sold out as well. And keep an eye out as the book’s creators Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso team up again for SPACEMAN, coming to Vertigo this fall.

Congratulations to Brian Azzarello, Dan Jurgens, Eduardo Risso, Norm Rapmund, Patricia Mulvihill, Carlos M. Mangual, Clem Robins, Hi-Fi Designs, Dave Johnson, Rex Ogle, and Eddie Berganza.

FLASHPOINT FRIDAY: “I’m A Changing Man”

flashpoint-logo_whiteFLASHPOINT: SECRET SEVEN #1 comes to us from a distinguished creative team indeed. Peter Milligan is the writer of many acclaimed titles, notably SHADE THE CHANGING MAN, the cult classic published by Vertigo in the ‘90s. From CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS to INFINITE CRISIS, artist George Perez is no stranger to major events. Joining them on the project are artist Scott Koblish, who has worked on various DC titles for decades, including SUPERMAN, FINAL CRISIS, JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA, and WONDER WOMAN, and Fernando Blanco, the artist of FALLEN ANGEL.

When it comes to a series written by Milligan starring Shade the Changing Man, the “leader” of the Secret Seven, one might expect a level of otherworldly weirdness. The first four pages certainly pave the way for a surreal journey to come….

This Just Happened: BRIGHTEST DAY #24

Today marks the last issue of BRIGHTEST DAY. If you haven’t picked up your copy yet, then clicking on the jump is the very last thing you want to do (major spoiler alert!)

bday-2461

John Constantine was first introduced to the DC Universe in Alan Moore’s SAGA OF THE SWAMP THING #37 (1985), in which the always suave and mysterious Brit’s first role was that of a supernatural advisor to Swamp Thing. Upon their introduction, John’s vast knowledge of Swamp Thing’s origins caused him to embark on a quest of self-discovery. It was on this journey that Swamp Thing first encountered many other characters in the DC Universe, including the Phantom Stranger, Deadman, and Etrigan the Demon.

John then took on the role of the protagonist with the launch of his own series, HELLBLAZER, which has run continuously since its initial release date in January of 1988. A chain-smoking occult detective, he has often struggled to balance the powers of Heaven and Hell on earth. While John has been known to take on the role of a hero, he is often cynical and not unwilling to compromise with darker forces for his own benefit.

Going forward, Vertigo will continue publishing HELLBLAZER as an ongoing comic book series. The series recently celebrated its 275th anniversary issue by its current creative team of acclaimed writer Peter Milligan and artists Giuseppe Camuncoli and Stefano Landini. Through the years, John Constantine’s stories have been written by a diverse and prolific cast of writers, including Jamie Delano, Brian Azzarello, Neil Gaiman, Ian Rankin, Mike Carey, Garth Ennis, Andy Diggle, Warren Ellis, and Grant Morrison. The series has also been illustrated by such artists as David Lloyd, Leonardo Manco, Steve Dillon, Rick Veitch, Marcelo Frusin, and John Ridgway.

John Constantine’s return to the DC Universe follows BRIGHTEST DAY #23’s shocking reveal of Swamp Thing. With the plant elemental on the loose, who better to help find him and restore his identity than he who helped him learn it in the first place? The story continues in BRIGHTEST DAY AFTERMATH: THE SEARCH FOR SWAMP THING #1, written by TOKYO DAYS, BANGKOK NIGHTS author (and former Vertigo editor) Jonathan Vankin and with art by Marco Castiello, in stores this June.

Head on over to Comic Book Resources and Newsarama for exclusive interviews with Co-Publisher Dan DiDio  about the series' final issue.

You may have been worried that the events of BRIGHTEST DAY were coming to an end with this ultimate issue of the series, but as John Constantine would say, that’s just “bollocks.”
