Character Designs for T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS #1 Revealed

On Monday, we showed you an exclusive preview of T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS #1. Today, we’re giving you a sneak peek at some of artist Wes Craig’s character designs. How did Colleen, Menthor, NoMan, Lightning and Dynamo’s looks evolve for volume 2 of the critically acclaimed series?

“CAFU's original design for the characters were great, and I stuck to them pretty closely, making little tweaks that would suit my style better, but mostly sticking to what he'd laid out,” Craig exclusively told THE SOURCE.

“Their powers: Usually the artist display's a hero's super-powers as majestic and awe-inspiring. But with the Agents, their powers can potentially kill them so I wanted the feeling that their powers were a bit out of their control and that it made them feel a bit sick inside to use them.

Lightning: I love characters with super-speed.

NoMan: I wanted to give myself a challenge in how to draw his invisibility powers without just using a Photoshop fade-out effect, and I think I've found some fun solutions.

Colleen: Colleen's going to have a fancy new ‘season two’ haircut, but we hadn't thought of that yet when I was drawing these designs.

The Subterraneans: I had a kick drawing these guys since it was my first major contribution to the look of the series. I tried to stick to the basic idea of the original 60's design with these guys, but make them a bit scarier and more reptilian. Drawing their subterranean kingdom has also been a lot of fun.”

On November 16th, DC Comics will release issue #1 of a new six-issue T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS mini-series. Written by Nick Spencer, the mini-series will have Wes Craig as the main interior artist and include special guest artists in future issues (the same way the first volume of T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS was drawn by CAFU & Bit and featured guest artists like George Perez, Ryan Sook, Mike Grell, and Nick Dragotta). Providing the cover art for the entire mini-series will be FLASHPOINT artist Andy Kubert.

"It's the little book that could! Nothing seems to stop this thing,” Nick Spencer told us. “I'm very grateful to DC for allowing us to continue telling this story that everyone involved has become so passionate about. This is really what we've been building towards since the very first issue-- everything comes to a head here, and the twists and turns only get crazier as we delve deeper into it. To get to see this story through is enormously fulfilling from a creative perspective, and I'm excited and hopeful that with the collected edition on its way and the first arc already available digitally, we'll have an opportunity to introduce a legion of new readers to these fantastic characters and the rich history of T.H.U.N.D.E.R.”

“We were thrilled with the response the first volume of T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS got, so we wanted to do a new #1 so people who’ve been curious about the title would have a clean place to jump on board,” series editor Wil Moss said. “Nick Spencer has a crazy level of passion for this title, and he’s come up with a truly great story for this miniseries — underground warlords, deaths, rebirths, betrayals — trust me, you won’t want to miss it! And to have the incredibly versatile and talented Wes Craig on board as the main interior artist, with Andy freakin’ Kubert on board for covers? Not to mention the surprise guest artists who’ll be contributing to #2-5? You’ve no doubt already reworked your comics budget so you can pick up all 52 new books we’re launching in September — what’s one more?”

Just in time for new readers to catch up, T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS VOL. 1, a trade paperback capturing the first ten issues of volume one of the series will hit stores the same day as T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS #1. Keep checking back to THE SOURCE in the coming weeks and months as we reveal more about T.H.U.N.D.ER. AGENTS.
