Third Wave Spotlight: TEAM 7 #1

In September, Zero Month introduced you to four all-new ongoing series: THE PHANTOM STRANGER, SWORD OF SORCERY, TALON and TEAM 7. With these #0 issues, you got a taste of the new characters and stories that will be impacting the ever-growing DC Universe.

This month, each of these four series will launch their #1 issue. To celebrate these releases, we’ll be putting a spotlight on each of these new titles every day this week on THE SOURCE. First up is TEAM 7 #1. From writer Justin Jordan and artist Jesus Merino, TEAM 7 #1 hits stores on October 10. We asked Jordan and Merino to tell us a little bit about their creative processes and to tease what readers can expect from issue #1.

How did you use issue #0 to help you launch issue #1? How were your creative approaches to these two issues different?

JUSTIN JORDAN: Well, issue zero established the team, so I was able to dive right into their first mission with issue one, which was nice. I’m still trying to layer in as much character defining interaction as I can, but there’s a lot of pipe already laid. In terms of approach, the zero issue was basically a series of small vignettes, which is a pretty different beast than writing the entire team doing their whole thing for the issue.

JESUS MERINO: I see the first issue of any comic like a shaking the hand of the reader. It's love/hate at the first sight, so it's very important to me to establish the characters and the tone of the book. This way the reader knows what to expect in the rest of issues. As soon as I read the script from Justin, and in the pre-production, when I was looking for a voice to the book and doing all the designs, I found out that the characters fit perfectly in a western movie, so I moved in that direction. Issue #0 was easy: they were "The Magnificent Seven Samurais", the first half of the movie (any of them), when the characters were reunited. Issue #1 was more "Fort Apache", sort of.

What’s been the most fun aspect of writing/drawing and launching the new series so far?

JUSTIN JORDAN: Getting to play with the new toys. I mean, writing Grifter and Deathstroke and Dinah and Amanda is great fun, and it’d be great to get to write any one of those characters, but getting to write them all and bounce them off of each other? That’s great fun.

JESUS MERINO: To me it’s always the time before the first issue is released, when the page is blank and you have lots of things to say. As I said, I thought that the book could work visually in a western tone. Even in the designs, I called Grifter "a mix between the Lone Ranger, Billy the Kid and Han Solo". Then Slade was crystal clear that he had to be a Lee Van Cleef wannabe. Alex Fairchild was Donald Sutherland in "Kelly's Heroes"...and so on. I confess that I was having a good time (I always do) recreating the characters ...

Do you have a ritual (music you listen to or something you eat or do to get you prepped) before approaching the writing/drawing for the series? If so, what is it?

JUSTIN JORDAN: I shut off the Internet. No, really. I have way too short of an attention span to get the work done otherwise. So basically I just make sure it’s me and the computer and not much else and pound out my five or so pages for the day.

JESUS MERINO: Actually I have tons of rituals that I do before I begin a new book. The first and most important is that I have to clean and put in order my drawing board and by extension, my whole studio! Then I put some music on (preferably old style rock) ... and the party begins.

Below, take a first look at TEAM 7 #1 by taking an exclusive look at some of the issue’s interior art by Merino.

INTRODUCING DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 "0" MONTH

Timed to the one year anniversary of the launch of the historic DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 initiative, DC Comics will introduce 0 month.

In September 2012, DC Comics will release 0 issues—and we don’t mean we aren’t publishing any titles—but what we will be doing is numbering every DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 title #0.

#0s will be stand-alone stories. “Some issues will tell the origins of a character or a team, or in some case where an origin has already been told, they will fill in the blanks in terms of questions readers may have about the New 52 DC Universe,” said Bob Harras, DC Entertainment Editor-in-Chief. “Each of these issues promises to reveal something surprising.”

And debuting at #0 are four new comic book series:

TALON - Co-Writers: Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV. Artist: Guillem March.

Meet Calvin Rose, the only Talon to ever escape the grasp of the Court of Owls. This former assassin of the Court is trying to live a normal life ... but that’s impossible when he’s being hunted by his former masters!

SWORD OF SORCERY – Writer: Christy Marx. Artist: Aaron Lopresti.
Featuring the return of Amethyst, Amy Winston leads a strange life on the road with her mother and resents it. She’s about to learn it’s all been necessary when she discovers she’s the lost princess of Gemworld—and she’s being hunted by her murderous aunt. With a back-up story written by Tony Bedard with art by Jesus Saiz, set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, the monstrous warrior Beowulf is charged with finding and defeating the evil Grendel.

THE PHANTOM STRANGER - Writer: Dan DiDio. Artist: Brent Anderson.
Spinning out of his recent appearances in JUSTICE LEAGUE and DC’s Free Comic Book Day story, learn more about the true origin of The Phantom Stranger and his connection to the mysterious Pandora.

TEAM SEVEN - Writer: Justin Jordan. Artist: Jesus Merino.
Set in the early days of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, threads of the entire DC Universe collide. As Superman emerges, so does the world’s counter measures against him and his kind. Team 7 is comprised of Dinah Lance, Amanda Waller, Steve Trevor, John Lynch, Alex Fairchild, Cole Cash and Slade Wilson — and their story will change everything you know about DC COMICS-THE NEW 52.

The four new series will follow with issue #1s in October and other series will resume their numbering.

SUPERMAN #1 GOES BACK TO PRESS

SUPERMAN #1 has sold out again, and will be going back to press for its third printing. From the creative team of George Perez and Jesus Merino, this launch issue kicked off the modern adventures of the Man of Tomorrow in DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, debuting the character’s iconic and distinctive new look.

The third printing of SUPERMAN #1 will be available in comic book stores on May 2, 2012.

Nicola Scott joins SUPERMAN for three issues

Fan-favorite artist Nicola Scott will be joining the SUPERMAN creative team, providing art for issues 3, 5 and 6. Jesus Merino remains the series’ ongoing artist, illustrating issue 4 and returning for the issue 7 debut of new writers Dan Jurgens and Keith Giffen - which Jurgens will be drawing.

Scott is under exclusive contract with DC Entertainment, and those familiar with her career will know her previous work with DC Comics’ BIRDS OF PREY and SECRET SIX. Most recently, she was announced as the penciller who (with writer James Robinson) would be bringing JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA to DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, and nothing’s changed there; she is still going to be illustrating those Earth 2 adventures when the JSA is ready to make their debut.

In the meantime, check out some of Scott’s SUPERMAN work right here on THE SOURCE – where Scott gets the chance to draw the Man of Tomorrow in both his past and our present.

SUPERMAN #3 goes on sale November 23.

Dan Jurgens, Keith Giffen and Jesus Merino to write and draw SUPERMAN for DC COMICS-THE NEW 52

Keith Giffen, Dan Jurgens and Jesus Merino are joining forces to take on SUPERMAN for DC COMICS-THE NEW 52. Jurgens and Giffen will be writing the ongoing, modern-day adventures of the Man of Tomorrow, with Jurgens laying out the book and Merino doing the finishes.

“In my mind, Superman is still the first and best,” said Jurgens. “He is the premier character in comics. As a writer, the thing I like best about Superman is the incredibly wide parameter of stories that suit him. Whether it’s a cosmic enemy that threatens the entire planet or a next door neighbor who’s confronted with an incredible moral dilemma, Superman is at home with both and everything in between. As an artist, the thing I like is the sense of power and integrity Superman embodies. There’s something about drawing that majestic figure in flight with the cape and classic ‘S’ shield that will always be a kick. Working with Keith Giffen, one of the most creative guys in comics, who comes up with more ideas in five minutes than most guys do in a week, is the topper. I can’t wait to get started.”

“Are you kidding? It’s SUPERMAN! The sky is the limit!” said Giffen. “I don’t care what anyone says, Superman is DC’s flagship title and Dan and I are going to sweat blood to make sure that everyone out there knows why. The sense of wonder that defined the character for so long is, most definitely, coming back. Big time.”

No strangers to DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, Jurgens and Giffen join SUPERMAN fresh from a three-issue run on GREEN ARROW. Merino is currently the sole interior artist on SUPERMAN.

Look forward to their take on SUPERMAN, beginning with issue #7.

Introducing Lois Lane’s New Boyfriend, Jonathan Carroll

This week, everyone’s been talking about the new take on Clark Kent and Lois Lane’s relationship in DC Comics-The New 52 this fall. Today comes the first look at Lois’ new boyfriend, a co-worker at The Daily Planet named Jonathan Carroll.

[gallery link="file" order="DESC" columns="2"]

"Superman is one of the World's Greatest Super Heroes, but he can't have it all," DC Entertainment Co-Publisher Jim Lee told THE NEW YORK DAILY NEWS. "Many of us know what it's like to be the odd man out and we think readers will have a soft spot for Clark when they see his reaction to Lois' new boyfriend."

“In resetting Superman's story and origin, it gave us a chance to revisit the challenges of that relationship in a contemporary setting,” said DC Entertainment Co-Publisher Dan DiDio.

SUPERMAN #1, by George Perez and Jesus Merino, flies into stores on September 28th.

The New Man of Tomorrow

(The cover to ACTION COMICS #1 by Rags Morales)

He has been called the Man of Steel, the Last Son of Krypton and a strange visitor from a distant planet.

He is Superman, the Man of Tomorrow. As part of DC COMICS - THE NEW 52, this September will usher in a new Superman for the new century.

In the pages of ACTION COMICS, writer Grant Morrison and artist Rags Morales will present humanity's first encounters with Superman, before he became one of the World's Greatest Super Heroes. Set a few years in the past, it's a bold new take on a classic hero.

* This Superman is very much an alien, one struggling to adjust to his adopted home. In the series, he must come to terms with both the loss of his home world, as well as the loss of both of his adopted parents. He is more Kal-El from the planet Krypton than Clark Kent from Kansas. He's a loner trying to find his place in the world.

* The series' first storyline will explore the origins of Superman's costume, as it evolves from a look that includes jeans and work boots to a new look: a suit of battle armor that pays tribute to his Kryptonian past.

* His great powers have limits. When the series begins, Superman can leap tall buildings, but his ability to fly is in its infancy.

And in the SUPERMAN ongoing comic book series, by writer George Perez and artist Jesus Merino, will be set in present day continuity and will unleash a series of new challenges for Superman and his alter ego Clark Kent.

* Clark Kent is single and living on his own. He has never been married.

* Lois Lane is dating a colleague at the DAILY PLANET (and his name isn't Clark Kent) and she has a new position with the paper.

Timeless and modern, classic and contemporary, but younger, brasher and more brooding, this is Superman. The New Man of Tomorrow.

ACTION COMICS issue 1 goes on sale on September 7 and SUPERMAN issue 1 goes on sale September 28.
