Win an All-Star Western Card Signed by Moritat!

Last Wednesday, we offered Fables fans the chance to win a “Cubs in Toyland” card signed by current artists Mark Buckingham and Steve Leialoha. We got plenty of responses, and even if none of them came from Fabletown, the last thing we’d call our winning photo is mundane:

Queen of my own Toyland!

The photo and caption were submitted by @terracanta on Twitter, who now has a great piece of signed Fables art to compliment that crown. But even if you didn’t win, this tale still has a happy ending. Especially if you’re an All-Star Western fan!

This week marks the release of ALL-STAR WESTERN #0, which reveals how Jonah Hex received his trademark scar. So to celebrate this important chapter in the life of our favorite gunslinger, we’re giving away an All-Star Western card signed by series artist Moritat.

As usual, the card is 11” by 14” and is made of heavy card stock. It features Nighthawk and Cinnamon, leaping to action in a pose that will have you seeing some very sharp stars. If you’d like to get your hands on this ready-for-framing collector’s item, you’re going to need to do a couple things (and they’re slightly different than with previous giveaway, so pay close attention).

1) If you're not already doing so, be sure to follow @DCComics on Twitter and Instagram.

2) Pick up some of your favorite new DC comics on Wednesday and take a photograph of you reading them. (If you can’t make it to a comic shop on Wednesday, a photo of you reading any DC comic will do.)

3) Share your picture with us via Instagram and tag @DCComics and #DCComicscontest.

That’s all there is to it! At 5 pm PST on Monday, October 1, 2012, one winner will be chosen at random and direct messaged for his/her mailing address. The winner will be featured on Twitter and if possible, here on DCComics.com. DC Comics will tweet the winner’s photo and a fan shout out on or around Tuesday, October 2, 2012.

The Best of 2011

There’s still glitter on the streets. Fridges are filled with half-empty bottles of champagne and gyms are extra crowded due to people working on their resolutions. And while we celebrate the beginning of a new year, there’s no better way to ring in 2012 than to reflect on the successes of 2011.

The DC offices were closed all of last week, but that doesn’t mean that press didn’t continue to roll in. Below, take a look at some of the year-end “best of” lists that ran.

CNN’s GEEK OUT highlighted ANIMAL MAN, BATWOMAN, THE FLASH, I, VAMPIRE and JOE THE BARBARIAN in an article about the “unprecedented creativity” in comic books in 2011.

With AQUAMAN #1 hitting stores tomorrow, series writer Geoff Johns was interviewed by various outlets. "I think it's a great time to try Aquaman,” Johns told COMIC BOOK RESOURCES. “It's a great challenge to see if we can make the character captivating for people. I just really find him interesting. What makes him cool is the challenge of making him cool, because he is Aquaman!"

“I think that he's the ultimate underdog to me. I think that's a good thing,” Johns said of his series’ protagonist to NEWSARAMA. “He's underestimated by everybody, except Mera. Balancing the perception of what Aquaman is, and trying to break that perception, is what the book's all about."

In ALL-STAR WESTERN #1, Jonah Hex is enlisted to help the Gotham Police Department solve the mystery of a vicious serial killer. “So much for Gotham being a one-horse town. Look at that dazzling city in the late 1800’s meticulously researched and brought to life by Moritat. Hex fans, you can relax. We’re not going to abandon seventy issues of dedication and love for the ugly bounty hunter,” co-writer Justin Gray told us about the image above.

This weekend, attendees of the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo saw some teaser images from this project, as well as a number of the first issues coming in September. Over the course of the day, we’ll be showing and linking to some other teaser art we premiered in case you were not able to make it to the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo.

In the meantime, head over to iFANBOY for another sneak peek at ALL-STAR WESTERN #1, written by Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti with art and a cover by Moritat.

Jeff Lemire to Draw Jonah Hex

Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray have had a great roster of artists to work with on their Jonah Hex run, and issue #69 will continue that trend when Jeff Lemire takes on art duties for the western series.

Between writing and drawing Vertigo's SWEET TOOTH and working on scripts for SUPERBOY and FLASHPOINT: FRANKENSTEIN AND THE CREATURES OF THE UNKNOWN, Jeff's got a ton of great work coming down the pipeline. (Did I mention an appearance in next month's STRANGE ADVENTURES from Vertigo?)

JONAH HEX #69 hits comic shops in July.

A first look at Fiona Staples' interiors for JONAH HEX #66

My admiration for Fiona Staples may be more publicly documented than the personal lives of most reality stars, but that respect is certainly well-earned. I’ve been looking forward to previewing Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray’s JONAH HEX #66 since we announced Fiona would be handling the art duties for the issue earlier this year.

Here’s what Fiona had to say about her experience drawing the issue:

I love Westerns and this was my first time getting to draw one, so I really enjoyed tackling the scarred faces, period clothing and harsh environment. This particular story had a bit of a horror aspect too, so it was right up my alley! Of course, the best part of all was drawing Jonah's famous messed-up face and contorting it into different expressions (mostly variations of "stoic" and "disgusted") as he reacts to the weirdness going on around him.

JONAH HEX #66 lands in comic stores this week. (If the creative team weren’t already enough, it also features cannibals!)[gallery link="file" order="DESC" columns="2"]

Stay tuned for another exciting Jonah Hex art announcement coming soon...

Palmiotti, Gray and Bernet, Part Two

jonh_65_dylux-3-copy

Earlier, we posted what Justin Gray had to say about Jordi Bernet, a regular artist on JONAH HEX since 2006 and a new personal favorite of mine. Today, we’re back with co-writer and fellow Bernet fan, Jimmy Palmiotti.

First, I have to ask, have you ever met Jimmy Palmiotti?

Jimmy has a problem. He's very shy. He doesn't talk a whole lot.

Yeah, right. Jimmy's full of ideas and enthusiasm and passion for comics. I asked him for a sentence or two about Bernet. Here's what he wrote back...

“Getting to work with your hero is something both exciting and surreal at the same time. I have been a comic art collector for as long as I can remember and one of my favorite European artists is Jordi Bernet... so much so that I tracked down his agent and on a regular basis bought commissions and published works off him. Little did I know that years later, with the help of another brilliant artist, Mark Chiarello, that Justin and I would be writing script after script for the man himself. Add to that a trip to Barcelona, Spain where I actually got to sit down with Jordi, and this whole experience seems like I won the lottery...month after month.

jonh_65_dylux-5-copy

“To call Jordi one of the best storytellers in the business is an understatement. Jordi learned his craft the hard way...working in comics his whole life and like another hero of mine, Joe Kubert, the experience is there for everyone to enjoy in each and every panel. Jordi's graceful brush line contains a magical confidence only a real artist can have...and this seemingly simplistic style is a deceiving thing on so many levels. Any artist will tell you that only a true artist can express emotion and strength in so few lines ...only a rue storyteller can create body language that tells a story...and only a true natural performer can pull together a story and a situation where no words are needed.

jonh_65_dylux-9-copy

“Yeah, we consider ourselves the luckiest writers in the business...with the support of D.C. Comics behind us we have had 5 years of amazing artists working with us...a who's who of the tops in the field and to add to this, we have had the pleasure of working with a true legend and for this we will be eternally grateful. As well, we look forward to the next five years, and with any luck, another 20 or 30 issues of Jonah with the legendary Jordi Bernet.”

jonh_65_dylux-10-copy

Ah, that Palmiotti. If only he had the gift of the gab.

Let's join him and Justin is tipping our hats to the artistry of Jordi Bernet...

Palmiotti, Gray and Bernet, Part One

One of the most interesting parts of this gig is that I get to talk with many of the writers and artists whose careers I follow. The very best part? When one of my favorite creators recommends someone's work that I haven't yet discovered.

Enter Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray. Their passion for Jordi Bernet is boundless. I have to confess that a few years ago, before their work together on JONAH HEX, I wasn't aware of Bernet's storied career. now, I eagerly track down his work for other publishers.

Listen, I could sing Bernet’s praises all day long, but I couldn’t do any better than his collaborators.

Here’s what Justin Gray has to say…

“A few words can't possibly encompass the skill and artistry that Jordi Bernet applies to his work and his art is something comic fans should pour over for years if they truly want to understand the medium of sequential storytelling. I can say with regard to our collaboration on Jonah Hex that there is a quality to our scripts that, although we've worked with many amazing and brilliantly talented artists, that quality embodies the Spaghetti Western in his issues. I say his issues because we always feel that when Jordi has a script he makes it his own. The words might serve as a map, but the art he creates gives it a life unexpected and it is always surprising in the best way possible.

jonh_65_dylux-1-copy

“Jordi makes me feel like we're channeling one of my favorite western directors in Sergio Corbucci. There is so much that happens in that process and unless you're as mad about westerns as I am, and have seen as many, you'll never notice the texture and flavor that make the tales he illustrates. His ability to blend humor with intense drama and an incredible eye for detail is rarely seen. There's a poetic symbolism to his work that seems simple and yet is so complex it often slides past your eyes and directly into your brain. I've heard people refer to his work as being too cartoony for Hex, but the reality is he creates a visual mythology that is consistent with the kinds of westerns that kept the genre alive when it was stagnant and void of invention. The kinds of westerns that have offered inspiration for the last five and a half years of our contribution to Jonah Hex.”

Come back later for Palmiotti’s take on Bernet as well as some more pages from JONAH HEX #65.
