Announcing JSA LIBERTY FILES: THE WHISTLING SKULL

This December, DC Comics will publish JSA LIBERTY FILES: THE WHISTLING SKULL. From acclaimed writer B. Clay Moore (SUPERMAN CONFIDENTIAL, OUR FIGHTING FORCES) and artist Tony Harris (EX MACHINA, STARMAN), this new six-part miniseries is set in 1940s Europe. With the Nazi war machine on the move, crimes are still committed even in the smallest hamlets. From the world of the JSA LIBERTY FILES, witness the birth of a new hero for the ages!

“Tony and I have been working on THE WHISTLING SKULL for a while, now, and it's been an absolute labor of love,” Moore told THE SOURCE. “I think he's doing the absolute best work of his career here, and there's no one better to accentuate that than Dave McCaig on color. For readers looking for a new spin on the DC Universe, combined with brand new headlining characters, I think the book will be a treat, and it's just the first chapter in a much larger story. This initial offering introduces readers to the legacy of the Whistling Skull in a wartime, pulp-infused setting, and should provide something fresh for readers to sink their teeth into.”

“This is a long haul, sweet baby that's finally coming together,” continued Harris. “Clay and I have been developing THE WHISTLING SKULL for a few years now. Taking every precaution and the utmost care with every word and every line of ink to make sure we bring you something new, fresh and exciting. I could go on and on dropping catch phrases and bore you to death with ‘personal’ ‘important’ ‘kickass’ ‘bloobidy-blah-blab-blab.’ Not gonna happen here.

“What I will say is that a host of friends, contemporaries and scores of fans have shepherded this project carefully and steadily towards the waiting hands of countless devotees of mine and Clay’s creative efforts. It's something I will NEVER forget as we approach the release of JSA LIBERTY FILES: THE WHISTLING SKULL. And DC Comics' willingness to marry and ‘seat’ SKULL firmly in the JSA LIBERTY FILES universe that I was a part of creating in years past, in effect resurrecting that franchise and allowing us to breathe NEW life into it, is a testament to DC Comics’ dedication to producing exciting, new properties that have the potential to go on for many years to come. I feel like I did when James Robinson and I were preparing to release STARMAN into the world. I can barely sit still.”

Exclusive First Look at the Covers for THE SHADE #6

Issue #5 may still be two weeks away but with a series as good as THE SHADE, it’s never too early to start teasing what will be coming in the future.

Today on THE SOURCE, take an exclusive first look at THE SHADE #6 by checking out the issue’s standard cover by Tony Harris and its variant cover by Javier Pulido.

“Issue #6 is the middle of The Shade's visit to Barcelona, which finds him neck-deep in the midst of a conflict between Spain's vampire hero, La Sangre, and her archenemy, The Inquisitor,” series editor Wil Moss exclusively told THE SOURCE. “For the main cover, Tony Harris came up with an insanely eye-catching image of a hooded La Sangre. For the variant, Javier Pulido (who provides the gorgeous interior art of this three-part arc, #5-7) turned in a beauty of a design, showing La Sangre and The Inquisitor locked in a battle to the death. Will The Shade's presence be enough to turn the tide? Who exactly is La Sangre anyway? And why does she always call The Shade ... 'father'? There's only one way to find out!"

THE SHADE #6 arrives in stores on March 14th.

Exclusive Preview of THE SHADE #4

Fans of STARMAN are familiar with the concept of a “Times Past” issue. In THE SHADE #4, in stores on Wednesday, writer James Robinson revisits this format to reveal an untold chapter of The Shade’s history. The year is 1944. The Shade’s criminal career has just kicked off and he must save an industrialist who is being targeted for assassination. But when he seeks help, The Shade learns that people are not always who they appear to be. And that includes physically.

Making this issue extra special is the art team of Darwyn Cooke (NEW FRONTIER/CATWOMAN), J. Bone and Dave Stewart, who were enlisted by James to tell a story as only they could.

“It's a thrill to work with Darwyn and J. Bone on the first ‘Times Past’ single-issue story within the overall 12-issue Shade series,” James Robinson exclusively told THE SOURCE. “After the wonderful work done by Cully Hamner, it's exciting to see another interpretation of DC's Master of Shadows, with Darwyn and J. Bone bringing their own unique vision to one of the Shade's 1940s adventures. I'm also thrilled by the final piece of this visual puzzle, this being the color by Dave Stewart who's brought a subdued yet sublime palette to the tale. I hope everyone enjoys this adventure of saboteurs and mystery men where we learn a little more about the Shade's mysterious past.”

"We are beyond excited that Darwyn Cooke -- one of the top artists working in the industry today -- made time to pencil this issue,” said series editor Wil Moss. “He brought along his former SPIRIT collaborators J. Bone and Dave Stewart and the three of them created 22 pages of gorgeous, lush imagery, taking James Robinson's already excellent script to a whole other level."

THE SHADE #4 features an extraordinary cover by STARMAN alum Tony Harris and lands in stores tomorrow.
